I'll be running the Battle of Brindol in an hour or two, and would like some good, bombastic war music to play during the background. Anyone have suggestions?

you could try the Skyrim theme, i think its called the dragon born returns. it does have singing but not particularly anything understandable.

(here ya go, link for 10 hours of music (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5J5XRl6RKk0&feature=related)) hope this helps, im not normally good with orchestra stuff liek this.

Skyrim won't work, all my players have it and will be distracted.

Everything (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqVIJFvUraw&feature=related) that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtgaQA8FTao) has (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPtM9-dnY6Y&feature=plcp) Battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_F-vB9RudQs&feature=plcp) with (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svRZz5t-6uU&feature=plcp) the (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIHUSTd1gJY&feature=plcp) Colossus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5YG1lHwZXw&feature=plcp) in (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FwetX5iVa6E&feature=plcp) its (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrFL2zPc2uk&feature=plcp) name (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akfztHv8a1Q&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLB3D7FC266505A51C).
More epic than bombastic though...

A few years back my friends and I would play the Oblivion soundtrack during our games. Of course if you've already shot down the Skyrim theme, I doubt you'll be interested it, but I figured I'd just throw it out there (since it has the best soundtrack of any ES game, imho).

I know what song you should play at the end of the battle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t_4BL1TXbw) , though. :smalltongue:

Here's a couple.

On the second link, McKennitt isn't instrumental only (here), but it works. (Much of her stuff works well in fantasy settings.) I wouldn't call it "bombastic," but I can totally envision a battle scene being shown to it though.

Requiem for a Dream is always good. I favor this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&feature=fvwp&v=j6Aa7dXkqWA) version.

Just about anything by Sabaton or Gravedigger will do. My favorite is Van Canto's cover of Primo Victoria (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FvoA0euYhc)

On a more "you're screwed" end, there's always Grahf's theme song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GN6z3jJ7ENw).

Do you have the Sucker Punch soundtrack? Or can you get it? It's pretty fantastic.

Also, if it looks like a party wipe is coming(shouldn't be likely, the brindol battle is actually pretty easy), play Mad World.

Seconding Two Steps From Hell and the Shadow of the Colossus OST.

Suikoden 5 has some cool big battle music. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0KYAQ44MV94)

If power metal is okay too, I suggest looking at Hammerfall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=146ITLW3Ytg) and Rhapsody of Fire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxdoLFXgb6U).

The Grimrock Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d689QT0nEY4)is a good one they probably haven't heard before good for set up, though not so much for during the battle.

I've always wanted a good excuse to play Dream Theater with a battle:

Erotomania (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Nd8vTOUnO0) (ignore the stupid name)
The Glass Prison (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSX86zPnUkY)

Some time somebody should get together an archive of the music that people have suggested in different threads on this forum. Maybe categorize it by what situations DMs should use them in.

I have a pretty strong interest in video game music, so that's the theme of this post. VGM.

Pokeremixstudio -- Primal Dialga Remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poiqPQpiTN0

Might be too electronic for what you're looking for, but it's so gooooooood. He has a bunch of other good Pokemon stuff too (Cynthia remixes, rival/gym leader battles, Regi battle, and much more). Not going to bother linking all of it, just too much <.<

Kid Icarus Uprising's final boss music is pretty good too, not going to link because spoilers. Referring to either the Medusa or the Hades one, both are pretty good.

Same with Golden Sun:

Walking Forward with Determination: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g3vKQYX0bu0
Mars Lighthouse: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ytoYlkxoAg (this might be a touch subdued, idk, but I don't know of a remix of it either... I ought to go fill that demand, haha)
Fusion Dragon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLAnTKPhP_M

A few examples.

Oh, and from a game near and dear to me, Chrono Trigger:

World Revolution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojQAmkL2NXc
Battle with Magus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbbLN_GRSNI
Actually, basically every battle theme in the game qualifies along with the main theme. Too many to link.
And also, Guardia Castle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TykpyrHAZpw It has that military sound to it.
Gaah, can't stop linking... Undersea Palace: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AfERAdq5GnI
One more. Black Dream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnjjNK7xXI0

(BTW, for the record, I am not any of the Youtube users in this post.)

Death Waltz (HD Piano Tutorial): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpDxad2DqhM Although it's not quite as effective when you aren't watching the video (you need at least 4-5 REALLY GOOD pianists to hit all those notes), so maybe not. (And actually, it looks like Touhou is responsible for it, so yeah.)

Lastly, check out some of the older Final Fantasy games. No specific examples, but hey.

And I know I was talking VGM, but anything Trans-siberian Orchestra also works. They didn't ONLY do that one Christmas song, you know ;)

...you know what? Screw it, Tvtropes.
