My character (Pal10/FoR5) will soon have the opportunity to further enhance his Holy Avenger. What special abilities would you suggest? Preferably from the DMG as the DM is not very keen on allowing stuff he has not read up on, and chances are he will not have on most of the splat books.
Keen is unnecessary as the character has Improved Critical already.

Is your DM fine with the Magic Item Compendium? If your DM has it, you could easily ask for Metalline (while you have Cold Iron on your weapon, this allows you to bypass DR X/Silver or DR X/Adamantine) or Transmuting (even better, for the same price, but requires 1 turn to shift and lasts for 1 minute). Having Holy nets you Holy Surge, which allows for an extra 3d6 points of damage against an evil creature, usable 1+Charisma modifier times per day. Then there's Heavenly Burst (which also appears in the Book of Exalted Deeds, by the way), which is like the Flaming Burst or Icy Burst abilities but doesn't require having Holy (on a critical hit against evil creatures, 3d6 points of damage + Fort save DC 14 or blinded for 1 round). Collision is also very good (+5 damage). Oh, and Everbright so that your Holy Avenger cannot be rusted or destroyed through acid.

If going strictly with the DMG, Wounding is a general all-purpose form of damage against most creatures, and eventually deals quite a bit of damage. If you don't mind getting hurt a lot, you could also get Vicious for that extra punch on all attacks.

By the way: how much money do you have to expend on your Holy Avenger? Remember that the weapon counts as a +2 cold iron weapon in most cases and +5 holy cold iron longsword for Paladins, so you're looking at most at the cost of a +3/+4 weapon as a base or a +7/+8 equivalent. Note that the cost of the Holy Avenger already has a reduction (costs 30% of its base price, or else it'd cost 400,630 gp) and that every enchantment added to the Holy Avenger will cost an extra 2000 gp. That means Heavenly Burst, Holy Surge or Vicious will cost an extra 32,000 gp separately (9,600 gp with the 30% price reduction, but would only work in your hands), whereas Heavenly Burst + Holy Surge or your choice of Collision, Metalline, Transmuting or Wounding would cost 68,000 gp (20,400 gp with a 30% price reduction). Everbright can be added for 4000 gp (1,200 gp with 30% discount), though, making it the cheapest choice, and won't affect the cost of the others as it doesn't increase your base price.

Spell Storing (if you have a full caster in the group), Wounding, Ghost Touch, Bane (if you frequently find yourself fighting the same kind of enemy)?
