as a dm, im planning a campaign with a plot involving a lot of undead, and one of my players wants to play a rogue, but is worried about losing one of the major advantages of rogues - sneak attack. So i wondered if there is a variant rogue class/rule or something that allows sneak attacks and undead?

Penetrating Strike gives away Trap Sense, and in return allows a Rogue to SA for half damage against immune creatures, but only while flanking. It is from Dungeonscape, though Expedition to Castle Ravenloft has a similar ACF.

If your Rogue wants to trade Trap Sense for something else, there are a bunch of spells in the Spell Compendium (Grave Strike, Vine Strike, etc) with a 1 round duration and swift action casting time (and thus swift action wanding, as per Rules COmpendium) that allow critical hits and sneak attack against a particular creature type. Have him buy a few of those at CL1, and put ranks into Use Magic Device.

You could always just make something up, like a feat or just allow sneak attacks on undeads in the first place if you really feel like its unfair to the player.

Greater Truedeath Crystal (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ps/20070209a) from MiC allows you to sneak attack undead as normal, for 10,000gp.
