Indie Thread
VII

Welcome to the latest iteration of this refuge of all things lofi and DIY, if not punk rock. No enthusiasm allowed.

Let's establish some ground rules:
The Breeders are better than Pixies.
The Olivia Tremor Control is better than Neutral Milk Hotel.
Sebadoh is better than Dinosaur Jr.
Guided by Voices is better than Pavement.
Indie Rock ended in 2002 with Source Tags and Codes, anything after that is Fake Indie and should be mocked.

Although you kinda have to feel bad for the guy. All he wants to do is make some meaningful music, and all that's standing in the way of that is his apparent lack of talent.

I can sympathize, but still, damn. Reverend J.R. Preston of Tjolgtjar is similar. He makes a lot of BM and really cares about it and has some crappy releases, but at least a good chunk of his music is good.

So Sonata Arctica has been streaming their new album (http://media.nuclearblast.de/bands/Splash/SonataArctica_SGHN/index.html). Gotta say, I'm sad that it didn't impress me more. Only the Broken Hearts (Make You Beautiful) is pretty good, as are Cinderblox and the two Wildfire songs. Besides that though...meh.

Sonata Arctica has been rather mediocre for a while, (weighing in the fact that that particular aspect of metal doesn't appeal to me, so looking at it objectively is a tad bit difficult).

Yeah, they haven't exactly been great since Unia. Still, I was hoping for some change. They show an ability to write good songs, they just don't seem to be able to carry it through a full album.

/tryingtogiveManticoramoreexposureManticora are one of those bands that I'll pass through when looking through youtube for new music, and just not really register until someone specifically points them out to me. I like what I'm hearing, now that I'm bothering to pay attention.

Pharaoh have been on my list of things-to-listen-to-more-of for a while. I've been fond of Tim Aymar since hearing his work in Control Denied.

It would also be remiss of us not to mention that Iced (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpCFq-xsFG8) Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i758tgh7J48&feature=related) are still the biggest and meanest in the Power Metal playground.

Blind Guardian used (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0N117aqVkA0&feature=related) to be a bit more aggressive than they've been on their past few albums, but even with the recent pepperings of prog/symphonic/synth elements in the music, they still have a fair bit of bite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0WxRRLVbnc&feature=related).

On the more obscure front, Persuader (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_np0qN3s4s&feature=related) are solid, the album (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8N458q2CqQ&feature=related) that Pyramaze did with Matt Barlow was pretty cool, and Cellador (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NM0-AdwG9Y&feature=related) are decent.

Not really, I can get the same effect from bands like ElvenKing or Equilibrium.

So me and my friend decided to create a band after spending some time together at a band camp (in the words of my friend "you can sing, i can play lets go!"). So far its coming along really well. We have two finished original songs and ideas for more, mostly folky death metal, as well as some really sick covers; Phantom of the Opera (nightwish version) and The Trooper.

Nothing really serious, one or two afternoons a week, but i think we sound really good. We are looking at eventually getting some gigs once we have a few more songs, but there aren't too many all ages venues around my city and we are both too young to drink (technically :smalltongue:)

I was wondering if the Metal Thread had any words of wisdom about making metal.

Speaking of Persuader, the singer was in two other bands that have done great work. Savage Circus, which has the former drummer of Blind Guardian, and an American band called Dark Empire, which is a personal favorite of mine. Both are well worth checking out. If you like older Blind Guardian, then Savage Circus is especially good.

So I just got back from a concert. Five bands played, and oh man was it awesome. I think that it's been a long time since I liked every band to play at a show. Allow me to give a rundown of how it went.

Aversed: (http://www.myspace.com/aversed)
The first of three local bands that opened for this show. I missed the beginning of their set, and being the first ones they didn't get to play long. Still, they were good. They're a sort of melodic thrashy kind of metal, with harsh vocals. I'll admit, I have a bit of an affinity for this band because two friends of mine are in it, so I might be a bit biased towards them, but I do think that they're a legitimately solid band. Still, they were the weakest of the five that played tonight, so they've got some improving to do.

In Harm's Way: (http://www.myspace.com/inharmswayofficial)
This was the next local band. They were a very good power metal band, with fairly good stage presence. They were clearly more experienced than Aversed, which worked in their favor. The vocalist was both a good singer, and a very good guitarist. I liked them enough that I bought merchandise from them on the spot, even though I'd never heard them before. It was a pretty sweet deal; a t shirt, button, and CD all for $10.

Forevers Fallen Grace: (http://www.myspace.com/foreversfallengrace)
Not perhaps the most metal of names, but they more than made up for it with their music. The crowd absolutely loved them and was very hyped up for them. Like the two bands before them, they were local. Had I more money, I probably would have bought a shirt from them too. The singer is an utter maniac, in the best way possible. Also, he bears a strange resemblance to Tim Curry.

Voyager: (http://www.myspace.com/voyageraustralia)
Finally, a band that wasn't local. Coming all the way from Australia, Voyager put on an incredible show. I hadn't listened to them before, but they blew me away. Their songs were fantastic, and in the middle of their set we had a fun little medley that ranged from a metal version of the Ghostbuster's theme song, to the America (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWS-FoXbjVI) song. Check them out if you don't know them.

Rhapsody of Fire (http://www.myspace.com/rhapsodyoffireband)
These guys headlined, and put on a great show. A lot of good classic songs were played, along with some of their better new work. Surprisingly it was during their set that a real mosh pit got going. We had heavier bands before that, but I guess people were saving their energy for the headliners. Fabio is a fantastic frontman, and there a few cool moments when he actually came of the stage and was standing right in the middle of the crowd singing. I was never a really avid fan, but they made the show well worth my money.

On his 90th Birthday (27th of May 2012) [Christopher Lee] announced the release of his first Heavy Metal single "Let legend mark me as the King". The single is from his upcoming album "Charlemagne: The Omens of Death", signifying his move onto "full on" Heavy Metal. That makes him the oldest Heavy Metal performer in History.

As if we needed any more proof that Christopher Lee is ****ing metal.

Since one of my two jobs went on summer break, I had myself a little splurge on CDs. This is what I bought, and my thoughts on them:

Iced Earth - Dystopia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1gUrtDzvU4). Why did I wait so long to get this! It's amazing!

Tiamat - Judas Christ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nu5Y3sDWrI). Not my favorite album by them, and apparently it wasn't critically well-received, but I rather like it.

Tiamat - Amanethes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paHdXVlJyoo). Now THIS is more like it!

Voltaire - To The Bottom Of The Sea (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpDAIG5lBhk). Decidedly not metal, but still awesome.

Moonspell - Alpha Noir (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Far7J-cb8) SLASH Omega White (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZbcZ9SpPHo). Alpha Noir sounds a lot like their last album, Night Eternal, but without the benefit of a cohesive theme that Night Eternal had. While the songs are good, it feels more like a collection of songs than an album. Omega White sounds more like their Darkness & Hope album, and is in my opinion definitely the stronger of the two.

Sonata Arctica - Stones Grow Her Name (www.youtube.com/watch?v=8upZKez7dAo). For the record, I wanted to post Somewhere Close To You instead of I Have A Right, but there are currently no available videos of that. This is definitely no Reckoning Night, that's for sure. I'm still conflicted on it; I want to like it, and there are good songs on this (Somewhere Close, Cinderblox, and the Wildfire tracks stand out), but a lot of it is so...meh. But then, Unia was pretty "meh" on my first listen, and it's now one of my favorite albums, so we'll see.

What I am kicking myself for forgetting to order:
Arjen Anthony Lucassen - Lost In The New Real (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVJSvW80CyU). It's the same deliciously cheesy type of sci-fi story that we've come to expect from Ayreon, but with Mr. Lucassen taking lead vocals. Yes please.

Ihsahn - Eremita (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hOhbJ_lbMg), aka Black Metal Saxophone 2: The Saxophoning. All of my YES.

And speaking of Death, I just ordered The Sound of Perseverance. Definitely looking forward to that.

Judas Christ is a sadly underrated album. It's one of my favourites. Also, you like Amanethes? Really? The best I can say about it is "Meh, alright, but it's no Clouds".

I also like Omega White more. I thought I was the only one, heh. But Alpha Noir has a few nice tracks. Alpha Noir the song, Lickanthrope, They're pretty okay. But Night Eternal was better.

I'm still debating whether I should get Stones Grow Her Name. I can't really get myself to care about anything Sonata Arctica did after Winterheart's Guild.

Oho, my first show review, hope I don't mess it up.

Well, sadly, due to a mix up of the time, I didn't get to see the first act, which was Pathology, and only a couple songs by Warbringer, which was the second. So I can't really comment on Pathology, though I can say that what I heard from Warbringer was pretty much just meh. Did not impress.

Vital Remains was pretty awesome, though. Went into it having not heard much from them, though since I got back I've been looking up various songs I heard at the show. The vocals were what really got my attention though. The contrast between the guttural roars and high-pitched shrieks totally reminded me of Deicide.

Destruction, of course, was just straight up unadulterated thrash, it was ****ing awesome. Though the mosh pit was kinda pathetic. Something like 95% of those present in the concert never stepped foot in there (a fact which did not escape Schmier's attention :smalltongue:). I don't see how. The music was just...impossible not to get caught up in. And then towards the end, in the midst of their last song of the night, some derp crawled up on stage and slammed Schmier's microphone into his face, resulting in him pausing to lob the microphone across the stage before continuing the song to its end. :smallbiggrin:I actually was sort of considering going to see that show when it came to Michigan, since a friend of mine is a big fan of Warbringer and Destruction, and it seemed like it'd be a good time moshing. I ultimately decided against it, as I have a bunch of other concerts already lined up for the Summer (three in the span of a week later this month).

I find it really surprising that the audience at a Destruction show was unfamiliar with moshing. Thrashers are supposed to be all about that sort of thing, and you'd think that a circle pit would be kind of hard to screw up to begin with. The only one I've been in that really disappointed me was during the set of a punk band that was on the bill with Holy Grail last summer. The punks in the audience spent a lot of the time doing some derpy little dance around the perimeter of the circle, which I found annoying.

Nope. At least in terms of sludge metal, pitchfork's got some solid picks, and since I'm not a black metal fan I can't comment on their taste in that, I can certainly observe that they review plenty of it and aren't any harder on it than on any other genre.

Also, can I make a brief comparison? Why is it that when Hunter Hunt Hendrix says stupid, pretentious crap, Liturgy sucks, but Shining gets a free pass despite all of the drivel they spew? Are you really gonna tell me HHH is worse than Shining? :smalltongue:

I...didn't think it was that bad?

It didn't leave me with any significant impressions. I don't really care, there's nothing wrong with Baroness playing a different genre of music, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with a band that doesn't play particularly "metal" music. In any case, I'll still have First, Second, the Red Album, and the Blue Record. I'm not convinced that the album with be terrible, anyways. Both of their full-lengths have had weak moments, so it's not really fair to judge them on the quality of a single song. Why should their next album be any different?

Ah yes, Seventh Wonder. I'd recommend anything off Mercy Falls or Waiting in the Wings, or The Great Escape (the song). But if you want to have an optimistic picture of Kamelot's future, don't listen to Alley Cat. Dear god, Tommy's vocals are terrible on that one.

Concert reports from last week:

Tuesday - Volbeat/Hellyeah/Iced Earth: I went to see Iced Earth on Tuesday, as they'd been picked up as one of the supporting bands for Volbeat's tour. I got there part way into the local opening band's set and Iced Earth were the next band up after that. Their set was pretty similar to when I saw them back in March, with the biggest change being that they had to cut about 30 minutes from the set as they weren't headlining, which of course meant that some of my longer favorites like "Damien" and "Dante's Inferno" had to go. Still, they put on a fantastic show, and my only real complaint was that I wanted more.

I spent most of Hellyeah's set in the pit getting roughed up a bit, then took most of Volbeat's somewhat overlong set off, but went back to mosh for their last song, and the opening riffs of "Raining Blood" which they played for some unknown reason at the very end.

On the whole it was a pretty awesome show, but I'd have liked a bit more time for Iced Earth and a bit less for Volbeat.

Thursday - Valient Thorr/Holy Grail/The Kickass: This one was in a little bar in a town on the outskirts of Detroit. While Iced Earth were the band that I enjoyed seeing the most, this was probably the best show of the week overall.

The opening act were a nice high energy rock band with a sort of punky, Motorhead-esque vibe about them, which made for a good banging time.

The Kickass were next, playing a style of instrumental prog that ate up their entire set in the span of about four songs. I had a lot of fun listening to them. Their music was really cool and hearing the drummer address the audience in between songs was a nice added bonus. Between his slurred speech, the beer he was drinking, and the joint that I saw/smelled him smoking outside the bar before the show, I'm pretty sure that he was high and/or drunk the entire time, though he was actually playing really, really well. While I was away at the bathroom between sets, my brother had a conversation with their guitarist, who was apparently a pretty cool guy. We had meant to buy one of their CDs on our way out, but ultimately forgot to do so.

Holy Grail were the band I'd gone to see, and they didn't disappoint. As with the last time I saw them, their singer's mic wasn't at quite as high of volume as I'd have liked, but it was better this time, and I could hear him alright most of the time, and knew most of the words pretty well anyway. Their performance was tons of fun, and I was able to see it from right up close. Getting to see their guitarists shred away on their guitars from about a foot away was quite the experience. They also played a few songs from their upcoming album, which they said would be coming out some time in the fall, and suffice to say I'm excited about it.

After Holy Grail's set, I went back into the bar area, where I was sold quite a generous amount of Jack Daniel's for $7. In what may or may not have been a good decision, I pounded it away in the 20 minutes or so before I went back to see Valient Thorr. They had a lot of energy, with the added benefit of being fronted by a certifiable crazy person, and I had a nice drunken, rocking time to close out the night.

Friday - Dream Theater/Crimson Projekct: For the last show of the week, I saw Dream Theater and Crimson Projekct. Crimson Projekct is a band which contains members of King Crimson and was playing King Crimson songs, but which was not King Crimson for reasons that I don't fully understand, likely a lawsuit of some sort.

The Crimson set was bizarre, both in terms of the music and the fact that no one stood up to watch it (my brother and I were asked to sit back down when we tried). Still, it was enjoyable enough. The two drummers and two bassists were interesting to see and the proggy weirdness kept me entertained.

The crowd finally took to their feet when Dream Theater came on stage. They played a lot off of their new album which I hadn't bothered to get, as well as some older stuff that I wasn't quite as familiar with, but the sing along portion is only one small part of what you're there for when you go to see Dream Theater. I got some solid odd-time headbanging in, and was quite pleased with the various wankery. One thing that I did pick up in their set-list was that the lyrics for many of the songs they'd chosen seemed to be cheap shots at Mike Portnoy. It struck me as slightly unprofessional, but it's possible that I was simply reading too much into it and if that was what they needed to do to inject some extra energy into their performance I'm ultimately not particularly upset about it.

I just heard about the Death To All tour today.

They played within driving distance of me just yesterday.

I could just drop kick a newborn kitten I am so unhappy that I missed out on it. :|I'd considered going to that as well, but the closest show to me is all the way out in Chicago, which is a bit further than I can manage. I'm hoping that it won't be a one off thing, and that they'll end up doing more of these tours, sort of like how the Dio Disciples work.

Was that really never linked to before? Huh. Anywho, the sad thing is, I would totally enjoy it if not for Akerstache's joke vocals. Still, I'm amazed at how fast he belted that album out. I'm not sure when Opeth's album was leaked, but Heritage (Of Love) came out about 3 weeks prior to Heritage's official release.

[EDIT: Come to think of it, maybe the only track to make use of lyrics from the Opeth album is "The Devil's Orchard" which was the single that came out in July. So, bar that, he could've been going off of the track list that probably came out long before the album.]

I have. I didn't know quite what to make of it when I first heard it. The instrumentals were, for the most part, top-notch. Ascending to infinity?
The band was called Turilli's Rhapsody, 'cause Turilli thinks to "Ascending..." as the 11° disc of Rhapsody, the ideal successor of "From chaos to eternity", so it's always Rhapsody again and again.

And then Morbid Angel plays nothing but their recent dance hits.

So I went to see Iron Maiden last night and it was magical. The set list was packed with favorites of mine, and just like the last time I saw them, I was very pleasantly surprised by the awesomeness of the live rendition of a song that I hadn't considered to be particularly strong in its album version (in this case "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"). Maiden really do put on a spectacular show, and this one ranks up there with seeing Priest last Fall for the best concert I've ever seen. Alice Cooper was the supporting act, and what with all the theatrics and things that was also pretty fun. It's hard to compete with Maiden's stage show, but it's nice that it was at least made sporting.

Iron Maiden can't be fought.

And then Morbid Angel plays nothing but their recent dance hits.Judging by the set lists here (http://www.setlist.fm/setlists/morbid-angel-3d6fdb3.html) they've mostly been sticking to the old stuff. Even though it is technically the Illud Divinum Insanus tour, it seems to be more about damage control than actually selling the piece of crap record.

What a coincidence, I just saw them a couple hours ago myself. And yes. Very much yes.

I'm going to see them at the beginning of August. From this description, it sounds like it's going to be awesome. Not too much of an Alice Cooper fan, though. Maybe I'll arrive a bit late.

Holy Crap.

I was bored and needed new music to listen to, so I looked back through some of the recommendations you guys have given out recently. I ended up looking up the new Gojira album. I'd never heard of them before, but figured I'd try them out cuz their name was kinda cool.

They're freaking amazing. How have I never heard of them before? One of my new favorite bands. I already bought the new cd and The Way of all Flesh.

Panopticon - Kentucky

holy what

New Panopticon? Why didn't I know about this? This has made my day. Week. Hell, month.

So I went to see Iron Maiden last night and it was magical.

Maiden is one of the bands I'd give a significant body part for to see live. Here's to hoping they tour over here soon.

Neofolk? Do give some recommendations. I'm always on the lookout for more.

As for metal releases so far, off the top of my head:

Borknagar's Urd is my clear favourite so far. Delivered everything I wanted AND managed to surprise me as well. Awesome stuff.
Candlemass' Psalms For The Dead was a nice surprise.
Alcest's Les Voyages de L'ame was pretty excellent.
Oh, and Sabaton's Carolus Rex. Almost not a single boring song on the entire album.

grimbold

i had forgotten how wonderful Urd was!

Also
new most hotly anticipated release (Asides from Ensiferum, and Black Sabbath) the new Tsar Bomba, the bassist told me yesterday that it would be done by september

And isn't Wintersun also finally releasing a new album soon?

I'm also moderately curious for Steve Harris' British Lion.Yeah, that seemed like it could potentially end up being pretty good.

I'd say the albums I'm most looking forward to are the new ones from Holy Grail and Seven Kingdoms. I'd heard rumors a while back about Priest releasing a new album this year as well, though I haven't heard anything more recently.

Maiden is one of the bands I'd give a significant body part for to see live. Here's to hoping they tour over here soon.I imagine they'll make it over in a year or so when they've finished up the European and North American legs of their tour and start flying off to the rest of the world. Did they make it there on the Final Frontier tour?

Haha, no. They've only been over here once, and that was in 1995. Maybe they don't like Africa.

While I was watching when the new AMV Hell will be out (probably September), I remembered checking if "I hate doing laundry!", "My car is a piece of ****!", and "I'm using a GPS!" are from the same guys.

Which they are. And turns out that Psychostick really is very entertaining.
Reminds me a lot of Knorkator, with just a different type of metal and in English. But the over the top rage about mundane things is the same.
I really wonder if any of them know Knorkator, since the similarities are so striking. But you can't have too many bands with albums like "Space Zombies vs Zombie Dinosaurs in 3D". :smallamused:
