Whatever your reason for being in Port Peril, you each spent the previous night drinking at the Formidably Maid, a notorious drinking establishment in Port Peril. For James and Spud, you saw the bottom of too many bottles. For Cyrran and Zander, the skirts and eye of a pretty woman stole your heart; then her friends beat you senseless. For Ezekial, it was the cries of a damsel in distress; too late you learned that no one who needs help in Port Peril cries for it. For Samedi, it was the food and the wine; both taken a little too liberally.

You wake up the following morning in complete darkness. You all remember the night before — the ringing laughter of a wild night, the heady joy of excess, the scents of rich stewed meat and perfume lingering in your nostrils. But the joyful memories are quickly stirred away by painful reality — a pounding headache, the sickly taste of cheap wine in your mouths, the hard floor soaked in the smell of brine, a rhythmic creaking noise, and the feeling of the room swaying, as if you were still drunk. Before you can do much more than sit up, however, several pairs of heavy footsteps enter the dark room, and the harsh light of a lantern painfully spears into your eyes.

By the faint light of the lantern, seven men surrounding you. Six of them are armed with saps. The seventh holds the lantern in one hand and a savage whip in the other. An expression that might be mistaken for pain but which is clearly an attempt at a smile bruises his face as he cracks the whip in his hand and screams, “Still abed with the sun over the yardarm? On your feet, ye filthy swabs! Get up on deck and report for duty before Cap’n Harrigan flays your flesh into sausage skins and has Fishguts fry ye up for breakfast!"

Well, that's one way to find a new crew... Cyrran thinks as he blinks into morning.

"Breakfast, you say? A fine idea. Kippers and coffee, if ya don't mind, old boy" Cyrran leans up on his elbows, waiting for movement by his captors. His fingers lightly feel his torso for injuries or equipment...

Zander Bannock

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/3672/zanderbannock2.jpg

Zander’s head was pounding, but he soon realized it wasn’t because of the alcohol. Someone had clubbed him at the side of his head. The blood from the wound had mostly soaked into his bandana, but some of it had continued down his cheek and mixed with the residue of lipstick. Zander smiled for himself in the darkness – it was probably the only cheerful memory he had from the night before, and he thanked the gods for how sweet it was. But then he remembered how the lady had lured him into that trap. ”Clever wench,” he muttered for himself and clenched his fists.

It was then he realized some shuffling around him in the room, and the distinct smells and sounds – not to mention movements – of a sea vessel. Zander was so accustomed to being on a boat that he rarely gave it a second thought, but he was a little startled to realize there were others in the room.

But the freebooter hardly had time to react more to his environment as the sound of heavy boots came closer. The door into the room opened and light seeped through. Seven men entered and surrounded those inside. Six were armed with blackjacks. ”Great,” Zander exhaled under his breath as they entered. He had no trouble figuring out who had clubbed him the night before, but this was not a place to start a fight. Instead he nodded slightly to the others who had been in the room, acknowledging their common situation, as the sailors entered, but before they had taken up their positions.

The seventh man, the one holding the lantern, started screaming at the unlucky “conscripts” as soon as he entered. The man was probably one of the ship’s mates, but could also simply be one of lower rank wanting to prove himself. Fishguts was no doubt the ship’s flogger, and the captain was a certain Harrigan. None of them seemed like nice fellows, and Zander surely had had more pleasant ways of being hired. But it still was some sort of acknowledgement to his skill. Nevertheless, an opportunity for work or not, he did not like this. Zander, being a man who certainly knew how to hold a grudge, wouldn’t let this pass. But he would keep it quiet. The somewhat lucky go happy swashbuckler only had so much fondness for people.

Standing up, he retrieved his tricorne from his belt, where it had been since the night before. The young man had a proud posture, clad in dashing oranges and reds coupled with leather. A whirling tattoo is at his right cheek. He reeked slightly of sweat, blood and alcohol at this moment, but so did everyone else in the room.

”Alright, you’re the boss. Can’t argue with these guys,” he pointed at the thugs with the saps, ”at least not without my sword,” he said with a smirk and placed his hat firmly on his head. ”You know, usually I’m hired, not stolen, for duty, so I must ask: Did you at least have the decency to steal my belongings, too?”

"Whas going on here now?" James says as he groggily gets to his feet, pain welling up behind his eyes as he adjusts to the light, and to his headache. "Who're you again? What's this about Fishgut sausages? And where's my hat?" he follows, grasping his short black hair for his favorite hat.

Spud, half-orc wizard

Spud growls in harsh but unintelligible Orcish and draws himself up to his full 6'6" frame, his tusks gleaming angrily in the lamplight. A blur of memories and sensations strike him all at once.

My head feels like the time Gerrund and I rigged up the whirling boom trap at home and the gnome set it going before I got out of the way!

He was told at the city's gates to seek out the Formidably Maid if he wanted to find a ship to hire on with as a siege engineer. Did they send him there knowing this would happen?

Surely he was singled out for pressing because of his features, because of his race.

Spud slowly opens his eyes and looks around. Everyone else is human! His anger dulls somewhat at that realization... until he spots James. I think I recognize that one of from the tavern. Yes- yes I do. The pretty boy. Thinks he's so much better than me. An inside man?

Without thinking further, he leaps at his perceived offender. "You! You did this!"

Groggily lifting his head up at the rough housing, Ezekial finishes sitting up. By the Healing Goddess, he thinks as he turns and starts to stand on his feet, his putting his hands up when he gets a chance to indicate surrender. Hearing the scuffling from two of the others, Ezekial looks at his belongings, checking to see what he has left. Ambushed when I went to help the woman. Don't know if she escaped or was part of this, but we'll find out soon enough.

As he takes stock of his situation, Ezekial runs through his brain of the problem as he tries to make it clear he will obey the commands of the gang leader. This is slavery, but until I know if we can escape, I might as well make the most of it.

Seeing the Healer's Kit nearby, Ezekial grabs it and puts it under his arm as he looks around for the rest of his gear.

We're only going to live as long as we are useful and not a moment after. But a few of these people look like their in the same situation as I am. Might be worthwhile to get some allies.

Noting the after taste in his mouth, Ezekial tries to think of what it is. Probably a knockout drug. Again, smart move on the slaver's part. They probably done this many times before.

Once on the deck, Ezekial shields his eyes, letting them get use to the sun's glare before looking around.

James sits slightly terrified for a minute, his head whirling about avoiding Spud's attack. Hatless, hungover, and hopelessly hammered, James gets to his feet a moment later. "Outside, outside would be a good place to be. Maybe there, ugh, I can get more answers and less madmen attacking me." Stepping outside, James takes a large gulp of salty air, while shielding his eyes from the sun. His eyes still blocked, he speaks out to no one in particular. "So, can anyone tell me what exactly I'm doing on this boat?"

Jolted from his rage by the lash of the whip, Spud stands abruptly- and somewhat shamefacedly, after allowing his "lower" instincts to take over. Still growling, he takes a more defensive position until, seeing neither more of his co-captives rising to defend themselves nor further lashes incoming, he falls into line. Making a bitter note of the lantern holder's features, the half-orc climbs out into the morning sunlight, where he stands squinting and covering his eyes with both arms.

The 7 pirates herd you up a creaky flight of stairs that lead into another hold. With what little light the lantern gives off from behind you and a little bit of light from the stairwell in front of you, you can hardly tell what is in this hold but from what you see, there is very little. From outside the ring of light, you do hear animal grunts and snorts. The men continue to push and goad you up the next flight of stairs where the light of the sun temporarily blinds you and sets the pounding in your heads to beat harder.

I need Perception AND Intelligence checks from everyone.

Ezekial:
The oily nutmeg taste is a clear sign of oil of taggit poisoning. You remember indulging in some spiced rum last night and you figure the spices hid the initial taste of the taggit oil. I do not need a Perception check from you.

Spud:
The man is not bothered by your snare and glare as you walk past him; in fact he appears rather bored by your attempt. From what you can see, the ship is a solid ship and a decent size. You're not sure, but it is at least two masts. Once on deck, you can see you are many miles out of port. Port Peril and land are just a haze in the distance.

Spud:
As you are being "escorted" to deck, you get the aftertaste of oily nutmeg on your tongue.

Zander, Ezekial, and Samedi:
As you are being "escorted" to deck, you begin to remember seeing the face of the man with the whip last night.

Cyrran and James:
As you are being "escorted" to deck, you get the aftertaste of oily nutmeg on your tongue. You also begin to remember seeing the face of the man with the whip last night.

Once on deck, you realize you are on a sizeable ship in the middle of the ocean, far from any land. Port Peril and the mainland of the Shackles are just an ochre haze many miles astern. Figures cluster around the ship’s mainmast, looking up at the higher deck on the stern, where two figures stand. One of them is a broad, muscular Garundi man with a shaven head, a long beard bound with gold rings, and an eye patch - clearly the captain. The other is a younger, balding man with a long black ponytail, wearing a long coat and carrying a well-used cat-o’-nine-tails.

You quickly realize you are not the only new "recruits" onboard. There are four others as well, easily discerned by their relative cleanliness and apparent unease over their new vocations. A dozen or so other pirates, clearly members of the crew, stand about on the deck or in the rigging.

“Glad you could join us at last! Welcome to the Wormwood! My thanks for ‘volunteering’ to join my crew. I’m Barnabas Harrigan. That’s Captain Barnabas Harrigan to you, not that you’ll ever need to address me. I have only one rule—don’t speak to me. I like talk, but I don’t like your talk. Follow that rule and we’ll all get along fine.

“Oh, and one more thing. Even with you new recruits, we’re still short-handed, and I aim to keep what crew I have. There’ll be a keelhaulin’ for anyone caught killin’ anyone. Mr. Plugg! If you’d be so kind as to make pirates out of these landlubbers, it’ll save me having to put them in the sweatbox for a year and a day before I make pies out of ’em.”

At the end of his speech, the captain walks away, leaving behind the man with the cat-o’-nine-tails. You presume that this is Mister Plugg, the Wormwood’s first mate. He looks down at you and other impressed captives and smiles unpleasantly.

Spud:
Even after his speech, you do not recognize the Captain, but you do recognize the Wormwood. The ship is known to ply the Inner Sea and Arcadian Ocean, plaguing Chelish merchant ships.

Zander:
The Wormwood is a three-masted sailing ship, 100 feet long and 30 feet wide. Minimum crew is 20.

Me against the world, part deux, he says to himself.

Easy Sense Motive:
Spud seems chagrined about his actions in the hold, but doesn't know how to do anything about it.

Spud glances skeptically up the mast. I wouldn't say I'm a bad climber, but I wouldn't say I'm a particularly good one, either. I'm sure that if I just explain my skillset there'll be an opportunity for further learning from all this.

Tentatively approaching the first mate without making eye contact, he mumbles quietly in very rusty, somewhat formal common. "I'm not much of a climber, sir, Mister Plugg, however I am good at the breaking things and also good at the fixing things. I know much about the working of... how do you say, the Engine of Sieging, Sieging Engine?" In Orc, he rattles off the names of a dozen or so instruments of war that he's moderately familiar with, including ballistae, catapults, and cannons. "And also the study of terrains, geographic lands, okay yes? I can also identify the valuability, valuation? valuing of objects and treasures with easiness; I have eyed many different things during my childhood growing."

As he trips over words and phrases in the common tongue, Spud seems somewhat resigned to scrubbing the decks with Cyrran- at least I'll be able to collect spell components without anyone noticing- but as he finishes numerating his list of skills, he glances hopefully all the way up from his feet to Mr Plugg's chin, warily avoiding glancing at the vicious whip in his hand on the way.

OCC: Sorry Mangles, I'm not going to need those rolls after all. With Samedi taking a fall on the first round and the high rolls of the others throughout the test, Samedi will not be able to catch up.

At times, the climbing is close. James and Zander quickly climb past Cyrran who seems to continuously foul himself up in the lines. James takes a quick lead but Zander overpasses him near the end of the climb and reaches the crows nest first. Even Ezekial passes Cyrran after a short fall back to the deck.

Zander Bannock

With the exception of Samedi who fell at the start, Zander had been falling behind. But he had steeled himself and darted upwards at the same tempo as James while they passed Cyrran. Zander was impressed by James' climbing - it was perhaps even swifter than his own, and Zander was raised on a boat. But Zander rarely backed down from a challenge, and his determination proved the better and he passed James at the end and climbed into the nest.

Once up, Zander moved to the side while he took a quick breath, allowing James to climb up as well. The freebooter had a quick look at the deck, hoping to catch some details, before turning to James, holding fast to a rope.A Perception roll check out the various crew positions. Even if most are still looking at us, some details about the deck and crew should hopefully be perceived. [roll0]

"Swift moves, mate," he said, patting his fellow conscript on the shoulder with his free hand. "What'dya reckon?" Zander indicated the deck - or rather the whole situation - with a slight tilt of his head.

Zander informed James of whatever he learned from his look and listened to a few quick comments, but soon indicated they should move down in order to not raise suspicion.Feel free, of course, to elaborate on the quick conversation, Kira - or even someone else if your characters climbs the top(?) (even though you probably won't reach the top in time to get the main points). I'm simply "moving on" on this post to reply to the whole GM post

Once they were down and Zander had gotten his comment from Mr. Plugg, Zander replied in a positive manner, obviously pleased by the accomplishment. "Aye, aye, Mr. Plugg. You got yourself a swift number two, as well," he pointed at James, showing that competition and teamwork could go hand in hand in his book. Then he stepped back, awaiting instructions.

OOC
Although I suspect rigging will be rigging, and a spotter most likely either would be one of the old crew or picked by an appropriate other test, would you rule that if Zander is posted in the nest that his freebooter's bane would reach the deck instead of simply a 30-feet radius? Or some variant? At some point I'm pretty sure it will come up.

"I reckon quite a bit, not least of which that I've got some pretty good competition. As for everything else, we can talk later, once we've got a moment's time. " Before climbing down, James also takes a moment to survey the scene from the top of the mast.

Zander:
From the crows nest you are able to get a good look at the deck. The ship has both a fore and aft castle. The forecastle is empty at the moment. The aftcastle (or poop deck) has the wheel of the ship. The wheel is decorated with some metallic inlay but you can't be sure from this distance. Above the poop deck, hanging from the mizzenmast is an iron cage. Inside the cage is the body of a man. Perched on top of the cage is a parrot.

Once the five of you return to the deck, Mister Plugg looks at Zander, "You be my new rigger. You will report to me for your duties, understand? You," he points to Ezekial, "are our new cook's mate. You will report to Fishguts in the galley. The rest of ya will report to Master Scourge for your daily duties." He looks back at Zander, "For your first task, ya need to be repairing some of the rigging."

Zander:

Master Scourge smirks at you. "Thar's rope that needs to be coiled and moved. Put yer back's into it," he laughs maniacally.
Everyone needs to make a Strength OR Profession (Sailor) check vs. DC10. Will also need to make a Constitution check vs. DC10

Ezekial:
Making your way down to the galley which you find to be a cramped and chaotic kitchen. Two wooden worktables, several wooden cupboards, and two small stoves against the port wall, as well as virtually every cooking utensil imaginable and a frightening array of meat cleavers. A score of chickens and three goats wander freely throughout the chamber. The stoves are perpetually lit, and large cauldrons bubble away atop them all times. A huge array of spices mingle with barrels of rainwater, two tuns of rum, cupboards full of ship’s biscuit and salted beef, barrels of sauerkraut, and a small supply of fresh vegetables picked up in Port Peril.
Fishguts sits in the middle of the mess. He is a large man weighing well over 200 pounds on a 5 foot frame. His apron is covered in blood and fish oil. Short bushy tufts of black hair poke out from under his hat. When he sees you approach, he lips part revealing rotted teeth as he attempts to smile. The smell of rum on his breath and person is almost overpowering. "Ambrose Kroop at your service. You must be the new cook's mate."

Unsurprised but disappointed in having some of his other proficiencies overlooked by a less-than-erudite taskmaster, Spud is otherwise fine with the opportunity for mindless activity to allow him to focus on his rich internal life and to comb the refuse-strewn decks for possible spell components. It can't possibly be as dangerous as falling from up in the rigging, though I'm probably more adept than anyone here at repairing things, and while it's no experience like playing with toys of siege warfare, it'll do in the meantime.

The half-orc glances surreptitiously around the group as they make their way to Master Scourge, his eye just narrowly avoiding catching that of James', who seems to be referring to him- as if he weren't there- in an offhand, sarcastic manner- though one, he is grateful, that seems to be without genuine malice or resentment. This, of course, makes him feel even more sheepish about his behavior in the hold.

After blinking his way through the occasionally arduous task of listening to the taskmaster's orders in Common but thinking in Orc, he follows instructions silently and with no wasted energy- no longer seeing red, as it were, regarding his press-ganging and turning inwardly in the meantime for mental fortitude. The time for action will come, but the time for reflection and paying attention is always now.

On deck
It is a long, hot, and arduous day in the sun, moving and coiling the rope that helps keep the ship moving. Everyone works under the scrutiny of Master Scourge who is never fearful of unfurling his whip and cracking it in the air to remind everyone that rest is for the sick and dead. By the end of the day, you have all worked up a good sweat and muscles that you didn't know you had ache. James and Spud are so tired from their work that they feel the effects of fatigue creeping into their muscles and they long for little more than the cold comfort of sleep. Meanwhile, Samedi, who faced many troubles and trials with the back-breaking work and was more concerned with the fate of Mort, suffers the wrath of Master Scourge's tongue for not pulling his own weight.

In the rigging
Zander spends his day fixing the lower rigging and making sure the sails catch the wind properly. He finds himself under the watchful eye of Mister Plugg who seems concerned with Zander's difficultly moving about the rigging but also seems pleased with the end result that Zander provides.

In the galley
"Long?" Kroop says. "Aye, long enough. It’s poison, this ship, but don’t let anyone hear you say it aloud. The hull listens, see, and the cap’n hears it all. Poison the Wormwood is, though, rotten to the core. You’ll not meet a more nasty, sour piece of work than Cap’n Harrigan in all your days at sea, and his crew’s the same, ’specially the first mate, Mr. Plugg. Vicious little sod, he is. He’d take his own mother’s liver to the butcher to make pies with, he would. But they leave me alone, mostly. They know I can’t ’arm ’em."

Not smart, especially in this situation, but we can make the most of it."

There is far too much clutter to do an exhaustive search in the time you have. However, a quick look around nets you the discovery of a very nicely crafted dagger that is currently being used as a butcher's knife.

And, unless the Captain personally oversees it, then there should be some one else to go through. A quartermaster, for example? In any case, it's just two items, nothing dangerous, and would be quite beneficial. Especailly in regards to me being your assistant."

Taking a look at the pots on the stove, Ezekial looks over at Kroop. "But regardless, that should be for another time. What will my duties be? I figure it will be to help prepare food as well a gather resources in addition to cleaning."

At the end of the work day, everyone gathers on deck for the evening meal. Prior to serving of the food is "Bloody Hour," the time when disciplinary actions are done for everyone to see.
Master Plugg calls out, "Bring Jakes Magpie up from the bilges." A couple of minutes pass as some of the crew members go down into the ship to the bilges and bring up Jakes Magpie. He is brought before Master Plugg who says, "For the crime of stealing from the quartermaster's store, you are sentenced to be keelhauled, Mr. Magpie. May the gods have mercy upon your soul, for we surely do not." Magpie is then bound by hand and feet and cast over the bow of the ship where the handlers of his ropes pull him to the stern. In all, it is less than 2 minutes before they are hauling him back on board, but what they pull back up is not a man anymore. His body is cut to shreds and ribbons from the keelhauling.
At that time, Ezekial and "Fishguts" Kroop come up on deck with dinner and the rum rations for the evening.

Master Scourge assigns the rest of you to swab the decks; backbreaking work mopping the decks and scrubbing them with sandstone blocks called holystones, requiring a DC 10 Strength or Constitution check. Failing either check results in the you being fatigued at the end of the shift.

Once introductions are made and requests are mentioned, Ezekial nods and heads into the galley, where he sees Master Kroop. "Morning Master Kroop. I hope you are happy with the cleaning," Ezekial asks as he moves to start helping Master Kroop with today's meal.

"For a second there, it looked like a scuffle would have been the best thing that could have happened to us. Let's put in a decent day, so that we can have some good times tonight, at least." Sheathing the knife at his side, James gets to work, hoping to figure out where his hat and heirlooms had run off to at the end of the day.

The day passes quickly in the galley. Master Kroop follows the conversation as best he can, imbibing as much alcohol during the afternoon as a couple of crew members would after rations are passed out. When you mention the knife, it seems as though his eyes clear, at least momentarily, and he nods his head "Yeah, yeah. Life onboard can be dangerous, specially for new crew. Most of the time, it is just the two of you, no one else normally enters the galley. There are two exceptions. The quartermaster (Cut-Throat Grok) is in the store during the day. Once dinner is called, she locks the store up and normally does not return till the following morning. The other is "Caulky" Tarroon, the captain's cabin-girl. She arrives in the morning and evening to sample the captain's dinner and then deliver it to him.

"A cookbook! HA!" Kroop laughs. "Wach ya be thinking boy? That the crew be wanting some fine dining tonight? These scallywags take wach ya be given' them and their happy for it. A cookbook!" He mumbles to himself as he wanders across the galley only to stop at one of the tables that you have not cleared yet and exclaims, "Well I'll be pickled in brine! I do have a cookbook here!" He pulls a cookbook out from under a pile of cutlery. "Here boy. Might as well be using it since I have it."

1. No, no extra bonuses for having cleaned the night before.
Throughout the night of cleaning, you find 2 pounds of soap, 4 empty waterskins, and a barrel of wine.
A6 is the primary hold. It is relatively empty at this time as the ship hasn't plundered anyone yet. A7 is Cut-Throat and Kroop's cabin.
As for cooking, you get a +2 circumstance bonus for the galley acting as masterwork tool set and a +1 circumstance bonus from the cookbook. [ref (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/basics-ability-scores/glossary#TOC-Bonus-Circumstance-)]

With each wave that finds the shore
Her soul rises in the evening
For to open twilights door
Her eyes are the stars in heaven
Watching o'er us all the while
And her heart it is in Andoran
Deep within the Emerald Isle

"We are forty against hundreds
In someone else's bloody war
We know not why were fighting
Or what we're dying for
They will storm us in the morning
When the sunlight turns to sky
Death is waiting for its dance now
Fate has sentenced us to die

'"Andoran I am coming home
I can see your rolling fields of green
And fences made of stone
I am reaching out won't you take my hand
I'm coming home Andoran"

As Spud works vigorously, pumped by his spell-found strength, he mulls over the interactions he's had aboard the Wormwood thus far.

"It's not what you know but who you know that helps you get by. Friends help each other out, enemies cause trouble." flashes through his head again and again, and he looks up from his work to glance over at the flame-haired woman every time they rise unbidden to his mind.

His first interaction, tackling a fellow captive, jumps out at him again, and he cringes. Thankfully there don't appear to be hard feelings, though I really must find some way to make amends beyond apology. I'll have to keep watching James for something I can do to assist him. Not quite friend-not quite enemy.

The second interaction, the whip, the cruel orders, the implications of the keelhauled man's punishment. Spud grunts softly to himself as his face hardens and his fist clenches over his rags. The less about that, the better. In the enemy camp, for sure. That begat a grudge that wouldn't be leaving any time soon.

The most recent interaction, beset by Fipps and his gang- more enemies for sure. He couldn't quite make a reason for the aggression, but the interaction reminded him of his stepmother's bitter treatment, for no reason he could gather other than the fact that he was a constant, underfoot reminder of his father's previous lovers. On the plus side, it made him feel closer to the others captured at the same time as he.

Then the matter of this tattoo'd woman with red hair, slipping him his spellbook. Curious. Why had she done that? To put him in her debt? To secure more of a position of strength for herself? It no doubt put her at personal risk, and he couldn't envision a pirate being anything other than self-motivated. But then, others had been press-ganged as well, hadn't they?

ybn:
Sense Motive with regards to why she gave retrieved his spellbook for him. If I can take 20/10 by taking my time and mulling over all the reasons, I do so. Otherwise, feel free to make a hidden roll.

Perhaps that would be a good next step, then, instead of busying himself with the architecture of the ship- it really is quite a boring ship with no big onboard weaponry, anyway- He could try to find a moment with her. A friend, an ally, someone to look out for him. And if she has a connection to the cache where our former belongings are stored, perhaps that will be my "in" as an apology to James, as well.

"Friends help each other out, enemies cause trouble." Indeed.

ybn:
Sense Motive with regard to if she seems to be approachable or if she'd prefer to keep their budding acquaintance more under wraps. Another hidden roll, I assume. He keeps an eye on her all day to look for the best time- if there isn't an obvious "best" time (best meaning either "subtle" or "obvious opportunity to help," ie a tool that she's using breaks) he eventually goes for it anyway.

As he begins his approach- immediately diverting course if he senses that she'd prefer he didn't- he keeps an eye out for two things specifically: if there is any way he can aid her via his spelled strength, or if there is any way he can aid her via a spell to mend something. If this needs a perception roll as well, feel free to roll that for me. There are no modifiers on either roll, unless circumstantial.

It'd been a long time since anyone had gone out of their way to help him- probably since one of his half-brothers took the rap for an experiment gone awry, knowing that they'd be punished far less than he would for the same "crime." Yes, he acknowledged, she intrigued him- all the more so for his inability to intuit her motive.

He had been hoping a tool would break in her hand and give him a solid reason to approach her, and had, for the past hour or so, had fantasies of a "tool" like Fipps (he grins as he puns skillfully in Orc) approaching her and making threatening motions whereupon he would come to the rescue, ham-fists and tusks a'blazin'...

Unfortunately, nothing of the sort was to happen. He'd have to create his own opening.

Tentatively at first, and then more confidently, Spud made his way up next to her, scrubbing his way until, to outside observance, it could have been coincidence when he arrived at her side- which he did silently with a shy but tusky smile.

The woman smiles and says, "I'm Sandara, and it was my pleasure. Shall we meet below deck after the evening meal?"

Ezekial
Moving the barrel of wine over to the Quartermaster's Store, Grok pulls out a key ring from her belt and unlocks both locks on the door (it is a split door, the top and bottom open separately), throwing it open a little too forcefully. ((Perception check)) The two of you move the barrel inside which is cramped and crowded with numerous boxes, barrels, and chests.

"Actually, I was wondering if I can make a request. I came aboard with a book and a satchel with a bunch of vials in it. I was wondering if I can get that back so that I can help Master Kroop with cooking. I might even be able to help with maybe making something different on occasion as well."
Grok thinks a moment to herself and then turns to a large wooden locker. Once again, she pulls out the keys and unlocks the locker. Rummaging around inside, she pulls out your book and satchel. "I don't see why not. After all, if its for the good of the crew... These are yours, right?"

Bowing his head when Grok hands him his formulae book and alchemist kit, Ezekial smiles. "Thank you, Lady Grok. If I find any more alcohol in the galley, I'll let you or Master Kroop know first. We don't want the good stuff to be taken by the crew and get too drunk on it while on duty."

Once he finishes with the cleaning, Ezekial consults with his formulae book for a few minutes and looks over some extracts that can help in the next few days. Deciding on a few, Ezekial quickly mixes them, putting the book in a cupboard that he can reach, then heads to bed with his satchel and newly mixed extracts.

She is quite surprised when the spell takes hold of her. Turning her head to you, she smiles and winks before returning to her duties. The remainder of the day slips by uneventfully and before long Ezekial is serving dinner and Cut-Throat Grok is serving the rum rations for the evening. As the shadows get longer and the crew gets intoxicated with their rum, you are able to slip off unnoticed and head down below decks to meet with Sandara. You find yourself in the hold alone but not waiting long before you see her coming down the stairs. She guides herself down with her right hand, her left holding her tavern pipe, smoke coiling from the bowl. She takes sight of you and smiles bringing the pipe to her lips for a puff.

More sense motives on the interaction and, if possible, the first interaction as Spud continues to reflect during the day. Wish I could do some of this with intelligence, given that he's trying to logically deconstruct her motivations rather than intuit them!

Spud seems relieved, greeting Sandara eagerly and teasing her immediately upon arrival, complete with a subtle reference to his earlier spellcasting. "It is being good to see you again, Sandara, though something has changed since I last was seeing you." He pretends to think it over. "Have you changed your hair? No, perhaps it is that you are seeming to have shrunk a little!"

He makes small talk for a time, making references to people aboard the ship to gauge her feelings [Fipps' gang, Mister Plugg, Master Scourge, and those pressed into service with him, in particular].

You talk for some time and learn that Fipps' gang are flunkies for Master Scourge. Fipps does whatever Scourge tells him to do and the rest do whatever Fipps tells them. You also learn that Sandara despises Master Scourge. In fact, he made a pass at her a couple of days prior and she slapped him for it, earning herself his ire. With this information you assume she is out to make friends among the crew just as you and the others are. As for Mister Plugg, you get the idea that she gives him a wide berth and is happy to keep it at that.

Spud slips back into the bunkroom after meeting with Sandara and pauses to collect his thoughts and concentrate on his spells for the following day. As the others slip in, he endeavors to engage them in conversation, sharing information gleaned from his conversation.

Those who engage Spud [not sure if we want to turn this into a group thing and retcon it or if individuals are coming back to the bunks at different times or what]
"I have met with a crewwoman who returned my spellbook to me. Thinking that some others are also having a desire for the return of their belongings, I probed to discover how she accomplished such a thing, and," Spud laughs despite himself, his tusks briefly gleaming, "it turns out that our quartermaster, as well as many aboard, are being of the quite superstitious sort and was told that this," he waves his spellbook about from its position atop his lap, "is being a holy book of the highest, the highest," he looks confused a moment as he gropes for a word, "the god-cursed, god-protected sort.

"Sandara," he describes her, "is having the feeling of not desiring to push her luck, but I am having the feeling that if we are clever, we are being able to use these superstitions to our eventual benefit."

Spud utters a word and makes a gesture, and a faintly glowing, ghost-like form appears in the room, then exits through the passageway and disappears.
Dancing Lights (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/spells/dancingLights.html)

"For now, though, we should being talking about perhaps some of our goals and how we can help each other out. I for one, am not desiring of slaving every day and being fearful of being beset by Fipps and his savages one night where I am not paying of the proper attentions, nor do I wish to have at being dragged behind the ship after being accused of some shipboard miscue or another."

Spud glances around expectantly, inwardly bemused at how many words he strung together all at once, and hoping that his meaning carried through.

Returning to the hold where the crew slips, Spud finds that two of his compatriots have already retired for the evening. James and Samedi are already in their bunks and asleep following a grueling day for them on deck. Samedi's pet monkey however eyes you as you climb into your hammock. Walking carefully into the hold, Ezekial gets to hammock when he notices the half-orc. "Hey Spud," Ezekial says quietly as he gets near. "How did your day go?"

Hearing about the Half-Orc's day and night, Ezekial crossed his arms and listens. Once the Half Orc was finished and he casts a spell, Ezekial smirks, then shakes his head. "Understandable. Superstitions can run rampant in circumstances like these. However, I would advise against going to far. You might not be the only wizard here and I will want to maximize our chances of getting our gear back."

"As for us slaving away here, we need to wait a bit more," Ezekial says, looking at the various crew nearby and within earshot. "As much we want to get free, we need to have a plan. And honestly, I can use these chances to learn more about sailing and what not," Ezekial says with a shrug. "I think I can get the Quartermaster, Lady Grok, to release some more gear to us. I already found some items that we can use to trade and possibly help us with our gear issue."

Looking at Spud, Ezekial shrugs and smirks. "At least that's my view. What do you think?"

The half-orc glances at his hands, then down the hall after the apparition he created, then finally at the others, still sleeping. "I don't suppose we should be waking them up to talk 'plan.' Our timeline is not being urgent right now."

Returning his gaze to Ezekial, he snuffles and narrows his eyes semi-suspiciously, taking a hard step in toward the alchemist.

"You wouldn't be advising your own cautions because you are liking this situation, no? Looking for promotions at Grok's right hand?"

He sighs and shakes his head.

"No, no, of course not. Please be forgiving my suspicions. This place, these people. I am not knowing who to trust here."
Spud pauses, briefly.

"What are your wishes, though?

"Here's what I'm thinking: I have been organizing and cleaning the galley yesterday and today. Tomorrow I'll ask if Lady Grok will stay afterwards. If you and the group want to help me clean, it'll be a good time to see if you can get your gear from her." Shrugging, Ezekial looks at Spud.

A sit there and take it kind of guy, with no fire in his belly. Unfortunate. At least Sandara cares about freedom, even if she's afraid. "Friends to help" must need be found elsewhere, but at least the man is no enemy, nor the backstabbing sort. If I can pull enough crewman together to flee or mutiny, I would imagine he'd go along with that as well, but I can't expect him to lead or convince others...

Glumly, Spud quickly realizes that with his difficulties with the common tongue were going to make this a longer process that he wished, that a leader must be found whose gratitude he must gain, else he'd be swabbing decks for the next several years before dying of lashes, keelhauling, or a dagger in the dark. All while the alchemist sucks up to the superstitious Grok and 'learns' over a cookpot.

Regardless, it is time to retire for the evening.

Spud shrugs, covering a genuine sigh with a larger, genuine yawn.

"As long as the vile Plugg isn't working us too hard, I am not being horrifically opposed to viewing your galley, as much as I am... skepticking? ...ah, wondering with difficulties- just how you are expecting this quartermaster to give us our belongings when mere days ago we were being drugged and forcibly separated from this gear...."

Without expecting a response, the half-orc turns on his side in the hammock and closes his eyes, plotting permutations of plans as he drifts to sleep.

Disappointed that his conversation with the alchemist hadn't gone as encouragingly as he would have hoped, and with the others fast asleep or not yet in their bunk, he was regretting the words and magic he now felt he wasted when he could have- should have, perhaps- kept his own counsel and had some precious extra minutes of rest.

Seeing Spud roll over, Ezekial shrugs. "It's not much of a plan," Ezekial thinks as climbs into the hammock. But until we can find a way to safely get off, we might as well make the most of it. "Also, I looked last night as I came in, but was not seeing the mate with the "gift" you were mentioning about? Was it being someone I am knowledged of?"
Since this is more than a bit of talking, Spud does this over multiple passes, taking a longer path to deliver messages if she isn't at a place he would ordinarily pass often by design.

ybn (but others can and perhaps should read this):
What kind of messages are we running? Are they verbal or on paper? Are they orders? Are they personal? Do they contain any information Spud can absorb? How many, to whom, and to where are the ones assigned to Spud?

After the shift:

Spud, aching and grimacing from the exhausting day, finds his way to Ezekial and apologizes. "I am being far too tired at this time to take on another task. Perhaps I can be assisting you in the future- I am curious to be getting to more familiar with this Wormwood." He pulls in closer and, in a lower voice, continues. "Do be letting me know what you find though."

Sarone, ybn:
If ybn mechanically allows this to circumvent exhaustion, Spud could be convinced that he could rest on the periphery and thus remain involved in this scene; if not, well, he won't be convinced but I'll have something else to post tonight anyway.

ybn (but others can and perhaps should read this):
What kind of messages are we running? Are they verbal or on paper? Are they orders? Are they personal? Do they contain any information Spud can absorb? How many, to whom, and to where are the ones assigned to Spud?

Over the course of running your messages, your conversation with Sandara amounts to:

Yes, I have seen the new cook.
Grok is very straight forward and not well versed in lieing. If he has made in-roads with her then he has been more lucky than she has.
If you are asking me to join you, then I will.

The messages you are running are verbal orders and information pertaining to the operation of the ship like changes in course, changes in duties, verification of previous orders being followed through on. The system is very haphazard in nature. You get the message from an officer and pass it on to the necessary person. If that person has a message, you deliver that. If not, you simply move about till someone grabs you and has a message to be delivered. Its difficult to count the number of messages you end up delivering as there are occasions where you carry multiple messages. As for the content, there is little pertinent information to hold on to.

I didn't see a DC10 Acrobatics and Constitution check so Spud may not be exhausted at the end of the shift.

Shrugging when Spud mentioned being tired, Ezekial starts taking the pots back down into the galley. "Offers open to whoever is willing to help," slightly dissappointed, but not by too much. They're working hard up there. I should look at what I can create for them for breakfast or even a snack tomorrow.

With the dinner done, Ezekial start cleaning and, hopefull, last bit of organizing.

Perform Sing [roll0]

Hour #1 Perception [roll1] Profession Cook [roll2]
Hour #2 Perception [roll3] Profession Cook [roll4]
Hour #3 Perception [roll5] Profession Cook [roll6]
Hour #4 Perception [roll7] Profession Cook [roll8]
Hour #5 Perception [roll9] Profession Cook [roll10]

You merrily sing to yourself as you straighten the galley up some more. The first hour you find 6 bottles of Chelish brandy. The second hour, 3 bottles of magnificent rum, the third hour you uncover a prosthetic leg made of wood and edged with a silver band. The 4th hour, you find 12 sp which had fallen behind a cupboard. You find nothing new the 5th hour. During the course of your cleaning, you do come across a trio of harpoons, a spear, and a grapple, all hanging on the wall in relatively plain sight. Presumably, these are used to catch fish for meals.

Rolls were here. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=13743969&postcount=130)

As Spud moves below deck, he keeps an eye out for anyone he might chat with who is also headed to sleep early.

More alcohol, Ezekial thinks as he looks at the various bottles. Can't say I'm surprised. Wonder what year it is?

After checking the date, Ezekial sets various drinks on the counter, then goes back over where he had put everything and compiles a mental list. Let's see what I have here...

very nicely crafted dagger used as a butcher's knife
pair of handaxes used as cleavers
11 knives (4 in use by the group)
short sword that was used to skewer a rack of meat
vial of holy water
good lock (w/ x keys)
2 pounds of soap
4 empty waterskins
a barrel of wine (in the quartermaster's storage)
6 bottles of Chelish brandy
3 bottles of magnificent rum
prosthetic leg made of wood and edged with a silver band
12 sp

Cookbook that provides +1 Circumstance Bonus to cooking
Master Work Galley (+2 to Profession (cook))

Setting aside three of the Bottles of Chelish Brandy and two bottles of the magnificient rum, Ezekial hands the rest over to Grok. "I'm certain I can make something with the Chelish Brandy," Ezekial says, checking the dates, "and I'm fairly certain the Captain and other officers would like to have something good."

Figuring how much a standard prosthetic leg would cost, Ezekial takes a closer look at it.

Do I get any bonuses from the roll for Profession: Doctor?

As he considers which gear to take with him, Ezekial realizes he doesn't have any where to store it just yet. "Lady Grok, how would I get access to a storage locker or an equivelent? I do not want any of the less honorable crew to steal the goods and try to ransom them off."

"And speaking of gear, when would it possible to get some more of my gear from you?"

Smiling at the alcohol found, Grok goes over to one of the larger lockers and opens it. "With this rum and the brandy, I would need more room anyway." Searching through it, she pulls out a back pack, a crossbow and leather armor tied to it so it won't get loose. "Does this look like yours?"

Smiling and nodding, Ezekial starts sending a mental prayer to Sarenra and Pharasma. Praise be to you, Dawnflower and the Healer. This is a good turn of luck. Taking the gear in hand, Ezekial judges its weight. "Thank you for you assistance, Lady Grok. And I'm happy we are able to help each other."

Taking the ladened back pack, Ezekial grabs the unused lock as Grok heads out. "As for a place to store it, there's a area with unused lockers. You may want to check that out. Just grab one. I'm heading to bed if there' nothing else."

Waving at Grok as she head to her bunk, Ezekial heads to the bunk area, being reasonably quiet as he made his way to the area with the storage lockers. Going to the closest unused one, Ezekial opens the lock, replaces it with the good one, and sets about putting his gear inside, arranging it for more room later on. After a few minutes, Ezekial takes the empty bag and head back to the galley.

Making his way there, he hears the light puttering on the deck above him. Well, so much for that luck. Hope the rain finishes up before morning, Ezekial thoughts as he puts a pound of soap, the vial of holy water, a waterskin, the cookbook, a bottle of Brandy and a bottle of the magnificent rum inti the bag. Better grab that nice dagger as well. I'm sure one of the guys can use it.

Taking a moment to clean it, Ezekial takes his filled bag and heads back to the front one last time. Now that that's taken care of, I won't have to worry about being too defenseless.

Happy with the way things were going, Ezekial barely gotten into his hammock and closed his eyes before a rumble was felt. "So much for a casual blow over," he said as turned over...

"GET UP YOU DOGS," Mr. Scourge says with a yell, stomping his way through the bay. "CAN YOU NOT HEAR THE STORM BREWING!"

Kicking one of the crew, he turns and makes his way back up. "ANY ONE THAT IS DOWN HERE WHEN I GET BACK WILL ANSWER TO THE CAPTAIN FOR SURE!"

Making his way up, following the rest of the crew, Ezekial's face turned to awe and fear: though the rain subsided, it was nothing compared to the strange colored thunderheads moving in. By the Godess, what is that, Ezekial thought as stumbled forward.

As though the gods went mad, a massive gust of wind shook Wormwood, howling mad as the ship plummeted down the backside of a wave and going into another. Ezekial barely grabbed hold of the railing when the water hit the ship, sending crew on the rigging scrambling to catch themselves on whatever could be grabbed, with those unfortunate going down into the deep.

"Get to the rigging, Cookie," Mr. Plugg says, trying to hold on to a piece of rope. "If we are to survive this, we'll need your landlubbered rear up there helping them."

Noddign, Ezekial takes a step forward when a bolt of red lightning arched through the clouds, hitting the main mast at top with a crash. With the screams of crew still clinging, the beams fall to the sides of the ship, bringing the sail down. And revealing the seen from the pits of the Oceanic Abyss itself...

The ocean started churning, heading in a circular motion. From the bow to the stern, the cries went out. "WHIRL POOL," yelled Captain Harrigan, himself trying to steer the ship, "CUT THE SAIL AND RIGGING, IT IS DRAGGING US IN!"

As the words left, it quickly was replaced by the sound that chilled the bone, as though a some elder crone was laughing at the situation, a cackle that was quickly assisted by multiple lightning strikes, each one hitting a crew member, adding their electrified death screams to obscene laughter, or sending wood and shrapnel into the crew.

Barely making two steps, he felt himself get flung into the air, hitting the deck. Looking behind him, Ezekial's eyes went wide as he sees Mr. Plugg's eyes go dim, the former first mate's head and back impaled by a score of wooden shard from the railing.

Looking out in fear as the ship's bow went low again, Ezekial sees it is for naught, the epicenter growing bigger as the ship strains in vain to escape.

I... I need to get my gear, Ezekial thought, thought not sure it would help him. I'm going to need my healer's kit and save those possible. Turning, Ezekial runs back down below decks.

*****

As Ezekial goes below decks, the whirlpool and storm rages. Winds and waves buffet the ship, washing over it and sweeping those unable to grab hold of anything into the see. Crimson lightning, thrown like javelins with unerring accuracy, striking down crew members, destroying the rigging, and riddling the exposed hull with lightning.

As though the insane god grew tired with toying the strickened ship, a flash from on high causes the what few crew to remain to look up, as a howling wind once more fills the air.
