O.k., playground, inspired by the recent thread about playing a swarm, this made we wonder about another present intelligent being that is hard to become: an intelligent item. Is their any RAW way for a PC to play an inanimate, intelligent magic item? I simply had a character concept where a ring uses a class ability to form a body for itself, and nobody suspects the body is simply a fake.

The DM should just create a cursed shiny intelligent object that will possess his owner.

Even a regular intelligent item can do it.

Completely different gaming system, but I played a character who was a floating head with an illusionary body.
Then there's a Warforged Druid variant I heard of, who instead of getting animal forms, shapechanged into furniture. (someone once refered to it as the Weresofa)

are you perhaps referring to gazebo jones? (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=9823824&postcount=132) ?

or are you talking about the cityshape (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a) wild shape ACF thing from cityscape? it lets you turn into animated objects too. not as good as the vanilla elemental, but it all comes down to the optimisation vs. lulz question. do you want to be optimised? or do you want to be optimus?

Check DR #354, there is whole section to ``inanimates''.

Haunt Shift into a Spellweaver's disk (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mm2_gallery/88268_620_116.jpg). The disk is indestructible, and you can make it explode (while magically not destroying it) for 4d10 untyped damage.

Fiend of possession/various possession rules from FC1/2?

Fiends can possess objects.

Whats DR? I'm looking through dragon mag 354, and I don't see anything relevant.
