View Full Version : Help Judging the Power of d20 Modern Spells

Hey Again:

As some of you have noticed from my earlier thread about full attacking, I am doing a class overhaul of 3.5. One of the major items in this overhaul is a level cap of 10. My group was getting ready to re-write a bunch of spells to make spellcasters more balanced, when a friend came up with an idea:

Why not just use d20 Modern magic instead?

The spells in d20 modern (found Here (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd) under "Spells") seem much less powerful. Even the Arcana spells don't seem too bad if you get rid of the summons.

Is this a good idea?

Let's see...


Still has Sleep, to win low level fights

Still has Glitterdust and Web, to win low/mid level fights.

Still has Knock and Spider Climb and Invisibility and Levitate, to obsolete rogues.

Still has Displacement, to be better than AC.

Still has Greater Magic Weapon, to make spellcasters have to spend less wealth.

Still has Hold Person, to Coup De Grace humanoids.

Still has Slow, to be a save or suck.

Still has Animate Dead, to make minions.

Still has Dimension Door, to screw over grapplers.

Still has Stoneskin, to rock melee.

Still has Cloudkill, to autowin vs low HD enemies.

Still has Passwall, to obsolete rogues.

Still has Telekinesis, to deal tons of damage with huge weapons.

Still has Wall of Force, to be a barrier that only Magic can stop.

Still has Wall of Iron and Wall of Stone, to break industries.

Still has Zone of Truth and Discern Lies, to short circuit plots.




If you want balanced spells, consider looking at Legend's versions...

If you want balanced spells, consider looking at Legend's versions...

Most of these are simple fixes, though. Only a few (zone of truth, knock) need to be completely eliminated. Thanks for the input!
