High Arcana

An archmage gains the opportunity to select a special ability from among those described below by permanently eliminating one existing spell slot (she cannot eliminate a spell slot of higher level than the highest-level spell she can cast). Each special ability has a minimum required spell slot level, as specified in its description.

I've red and re-red the description, and I see nothing preventing the Archmage to sacrifice spell slots from an other list than its primary arcane class.

Would an Assassin/ Wizard / Archmage be able to sacrifice spells from the Assassin list ?
Does something prevent a Mystic Theurge to sacrifice Divince Spell slots ?

I'm fairly convinced it is not deseign to allow such a thing, but I see nothing preventing it, technically.

Did I miss anything ?

Thanks for your answers.

Do note that most (if not all) of those abilities force you to give up slots you do not have with anything but the most potent spell lists (that go up to 5th level or higher spells).

An Ultimate Magus or Mystic Theurge Archmage could always fatten up his favourite side by dumping the other side's slots.

The question is still open for Cleric list, especially in the case of a Mistic Theurge.

Forget the assassin, I ment bard :)

The earlier entry to Archmage is 14th. With some sort of Theurgy is 17th.
I don't think that forfait a 5th level cleric spell instead of a wiz one is a problem, by this level.

This said, no, there is nothing preventing it RAW.

Any spell slot of the requisite level works by RAW.

There's not really any good balance concern to prevent it, though I'm sure many DMs will find Divine Spell Slots unacceptable for powering High Arcana.

Not really sure why; the distinctions between Arcane and Divine spells is almost nothing anyway.

There aren't any substantial restrictions. I don't think it matters much balance wise although I could see for fluffish reasons restricting where the spell slot could from.

The only contexts where it does have some balance impact is for single advancement wizards who sacrifice spell slots that are restricted in what they can do. So for example a specialist wizard can eliminate a spell slot from their specialist school. Similarly, if you have levels in Nightmare Spinner, you can sacrifice the bonus spell slots from that. This makes Nightmare Spinner/Archmage a nicer option, especially for generalist wizards.

A Specialist caster can even give up there Specialized slot which makes Archmage all the more appealing for Specialist Ultimate Magus which I believe can qualify at 17th level (w/o Practiced spellcaster and at 14 w/Practiced Spellcaster twice)

For the 17th level route I recommend 3 levels of Master Specialist at least, you won't get dual 9s but you'll get 9th level on your Wizard side :smalltongue:
