If you dont want to buy the plastic figurines or to use die to indicate the position of monsters and PCs you can always use the paper miniatures.

Some time ago i found this topic: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72946

Which sheets are you guys using?
Maybe we should make more sheets with OOTS art?

Our group had a bunch of pieces from a Lord of the Rings Risk game that worked really well for our purposes. If we needed something bigger, we'd usually just pick up whatever was laying around.

Things our group has used as miniatures:
Chess pieces
checkers
aforementioned lotr risk pieces
shot glasses (that was an interesting night)
soda cans
Mountains of pennies (army of kobolds)
one random 100 yen coin
film canisters
coffee mugs
lifesavers (we decided that whoever killed the respective monster got to eat its piece)
dice
random pieces from a monopoly game
pocket lint
scraps of paper
paper cranes
and, very, very rarely, actual miniatures.

It doesn't really matter what your game uses. Miniatures are fun, but with the power of imagination, you can turn a half-empty can of pepsi into a dragon. :3

True immagination can transform anythoing in a knight riding a dragon.
I also used pieces of paper, die, erasers ecc.
Still it much cooler to have your own personalized figurine.
Just like a forum avatar.

I was just sharing the idea of turning your avatars into tabletop figurines. I its not hard, I can make this for them if they will give permission to share it.

Here are some sources of cardboard miniatures:

And the first ones ever produced are still available, in pdf format, from Steve Jackson Games:

I print tokens on magnet paper. It's worked really well for my group so far.

Really simple way that our group does things: We each have a one-inch square of card paper, printed with our name and class. For example, mine says "Kayndar: Cleric." With a bit of sticky-tack and a penny stuck to the bottom, you have credible miniatures. (It also allows the DM to make easy monsters: 2x2 square, scribble a stick-figure with a meat-club, and hey presto! Instant giant!)

Ok.

I was searching for immages to turn into miniatures.
Does a file with a lot of OOts Art/avatars exist?

The Giant is actually making these for sale, as foldout minis. Not sure if it's just part of the Kickstarter project though.

I use old magic the gather cards for a number of different monsters, especially at low levels. Orcs, Trolls, Goblins, Skeletons.

Of course there are a few other things you can manage, depending on the art. Hot glue them to pennies, and bam, you got yourself some paper miniatures here are some pictures.

Now, aside from paper miniatures, another great affordable way to get miniatures, are to get those tubes of realistic plastic animals. You can also get Bigger ones that could easily be used as Dire version of animals. Here is a picture of some of those small animals.

Anyway, happy miniature making!

It's rather unfortunate that you missed out on A Monster For All Seasons, as that would be exactly what you need :smallfrown:

There was this one night when 4 of us felt like playing D&D, but our friend who owns everything wasn't there...and all we had was one set of dice. We shared the dice, assigned bone dice as PCs (each PC was a different number), and various types of food/food containers were monsters. Broken Lays were goblins at one point, a soda can was an adult dragon, etc. We drew a misshapen grid on the back of a grease-stained pizza box...I remember it was one of the best gaming sessions we've ever had, it was great fun.
