Salutations and welcome one and all to the 178th iteration of a remarkable and immortal thread!
Banter, frolic or otherwise engage in loquaciousness, it is expected of us and so we must.

The greatest action scene in history (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7yBnl_krN_U)

The Previous Random Banter, can be found here:
Elemental's Excitingly Excellent Random Banter: No.CLXXVII (177) (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13163770)

Typed below are the rules of these hallowed halls:
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Well, I did need it badly. Since vacation has started, I've been staying up later and later, causing myself to wake up at ridiculously late hours. So I decided to reset my internal clock by staying up for an entire night, and then going to sleep at a normal time the following evening. That's what happened yesterday, though it seems the sleep deprivation got me to sleep a bit more than I intended to.

Reposting this (because I kind of missed the new thread):

I assume you tower-hop your way to the enemy base? Or do you just rush over a bunch of villagers and pop them at the enemy walls/in the center of town?

That depended on how far my villager could get without being attacked.

While I admit that I am as fond of fortification as the next person. Constructing towers up to the enemy base seems to be far too annoying to be allowed.

Well, it requires a monstrous economy and the "aegis" cheat, so it's not a problem you'd encounter in a multiplayer game unless you actually were playing with cheats, in which case I'd call it fair game.

Anyway, back to business...

12 hours? jeaaaaloouuus! I love sleeping.

In some RTSs this is mitigated by the mechanics of the game. In SC2, for example, towering is only really a viable strategy for the protoss, because Zerg need creep that spawns from their buildings to make their towers and the terran's AG tower (bunker) needs marines, whereas Protoss just need to sneak in a probe, construct a pylon and then bring up the cannons.

I wouldn't know. I don't play very much Starcraft II, so I'm much more familiar with Starcraft I.
But, they were probably nerfed when they made the new game because stacking huge amounts of defenses was too viable a strategy as Protoss in original.

Fun fact: I was reading somewhere, I can't remember where so I can't validate its reliability, but supposedly, the Arabic number system was banned in financial matter in some places in Europe at one point in history because they believed it was too easy to surreptitiously alter.
So, all the business ledgers had to be in Roman Numerals.

Also, people use Roman Numerals for things because they're classy and look more formal.
I mean... 1998? Not formal at all.
MCMXCVIII on the other hand... Now, that's an important looking number.

...I can't see Latin anymore without hearing Eddie Izzard call the language silly in my head. >.<

Well... It is silly a bit.
The quote in my avatarsignature (I really need to proofread these things) literally translates, according to the person who translated it into Latin for me, as:

Hmn. Traditional would be a translation for that, I believe, but I prefer the more archaic translations for Latin, they have less variability in their interpretations and its easier to retranslate. But you had the plural for Roman people when you could just do Romae (of Rome the city, but also used for the civilization).

If you want the full story:
Tylerb7 started a thread where people could request things translated into Latin, so that he could his five years studying Latin to good use.
And, as it is one of my favourite pieces of wisdom, I requested that, "A friend is someone who dances with you in the light of the sun and walks alongside you in the darkness", be translated into Latin.

Longish story short: He decided against a literal translation, and now I have a cool Latin quotation in my signature.

Five years and he didn't know that second declension (read:amicus) singular genetive and plural nominative look the same? Because either he pluralized friend (It is painfully hard to translate from English admittedly, I'm very lucky I know most of those words) or he doesn't know a small portion of Latin as well as a guy who practically failed his Latin I class.:smallamused:
TL;DR:Freshman feels confident in his Latin abilities! +3 to self respect!

Ok, my first bout of completionist is not over. Having found that thread, I have his post!:smalltongue:

amici est tecum in luce saltare atque in umbris ambulare (second 'in' being optional)
"Of a friend it is characteristic with you in the light to dance and in the shows to walk" = "A friend dances with you in the light and walks with you in the shadows"
I can see his thought process now and yeah, it's a good translation. He merely reworded the translation. Very nice, but I disapprove of using it so the subject changes.:smallamused: Though I still cant catch where the characteristic comes from. Ah well, maybe that's next year. :smallcool: (His original has the "of a friend" which is the literal of "amici", so my whining about the genitive is dealt with.) Five years and he didn't know that second declension (read:amicus) singular genetive and plural nominative look the same? Because either he pluralized friend (It is painfully hard to translate from English admittedly, I'm very lucky I know most of those words) or he doesn't know a small portion of Latin as well as a guy who practically failed his Latin I class.:smallamused:
TL;DR:Freshman feels confident in his Latin abilities! +3 to self respect!

Friend or friends, the quotation has the same effect.
And as I know almost nothing about Latin, I'm just going to smile and nod and agree with the difficult to translate part.

ARE YOU HAPPY NOW LATIN TEACHER? I SHOWED UP A SEMINARIAN IN LATIN.:smalltongue:

Hey, Latin studies don't start up for me until next year. I use a mixture of what I know from Latin prayers (Pater is father, nomen is name, regina is queen, etc.) and translator programs to write out my stuff in Latin. Talk to me after I take a year of college Latin, and then we'll see who shows up who. :smallamused:

Well gosh, I'm sorry bearded one. I didn't know you had little experience in Latin. :smalltongue: But nice improv then, if all you know is church latin. It was pretty nice. I still struggle with ANY English to Latin translating, so ignore any freshman admirative tones. Completely involuntary.

I'm actually just proud I didn't drag my Latin text out to find out vocab. I try to use my grasp of Spanish to backtrace words if I don't know the exact Latin word. Spanish to Latin is mostly just ending changes, and of course some repetitive consonants and long vowel signs.

Spanish is indeed good for Latin, as are many other European languages. I generally mix together my knowledge of English, Spanish, and Polish to guess at Latin words that I don't know. It works pretty well.

For example, es dificil comprender łacine jeżeli you don't speak una lengua który ma przypadkow just como łacina i polski mają.

Not much, if only the most important parts weren't in polish one could get the idea without having to have studied Slavic languages.

Teddy, I'm not sure it's viable in AoE, but early building of some kind of defensive structure at a natural outlet to an enemy base is a viable cheese strategy in other RTSes, as far as I'm aware. >.>

Well, without the "aegis" cheat, putting up defensive structures just outside of their base is going to be a hassle, because even with multiple villagers, castles take a long time to build, and the defensive towers require walls to protect them from direct attacks, or any force of 10-ish melee soldiers is going to tear it down. The cannon towers do have the power to kill everything that stabs at them, but by then, your opponent is going to have trebuchets that pound them into dust from way out of cannon range.

Also, most AoE maps have more than one natural outlet to the players' bases, making it harder to completely build them in.

In Age of Mythology, I spam o canada, wrath of the gods and mount olympus. It's amazing how crushing and total the victory is

It requires some unicode hassle to make it look good, but if anyone's willing to go through that, I support this idea. :smallamused:

For as long as one person falls for it, you'll probably make a net gain...

Also, I once saw a banner like these that displayed the actual "viewed this banner" number (or some completely random number that looked plausible due to it's randomness) together with the message that I'd won. I almost felt like klicking the banner just to reward their honesty.

The aegis cheat was rather excellent, I'd ensure that I had the requisite resources (if not, cheats were at hand) and then built castles (or the civilisation's equivalent of castles) as a wall around my areas of control. No enemy survived the hail of arrows - enough to blot out the sun, and so they always fought in the shade.

Why is it that every year that the incoming Freshman class is suppose to be horrible? My freshman year it seemed there was a pattern. We, the class of 2013 were OK, the class of 2012 was alright, the class of 2011 was amazing, and the class of 2010 was just horrible. At the end of Freshman year everyone just started raving about how the upcoming class wasn't very good and upperclassman just said it was trend. People graduating in odd numbered years like the other grades who graduate in odd years, and those who graduate in even numbered years like those in other even numbered years. I didn't really question it then, but it made sense, I guess. End of Sophomore year the Freshman class aid the upcoming freshman were bad, and our class seemed to think they were fine. End of this year, all the classes are saying the incoming Freshman are atrocious. I really hope they're wrong.

What I've read of the books thus far is excellent; the series is A Song of Fire and Ice and not Game of Thrones as suggested by the tv series. It's well written and the world (low fantasy, but there is the impinging threat of the supernatural) is unique and well developed.

Are you able to read a few pages at Walmart to get an idea of what the novels are like?

I highly recommend if you like gritty realism and political intrigue in your novels. The tv series, while I haven't really gotten into it, is good as well; it's a HBO series so there's no question that it won't be good.

You know how when you post in a thread, the circle icon on the left changes to a tick? I use that tick to keep track of which threads I'm following, and I'd bet a lot of other people do as well. I just acquired Chrono Trigger (the DS version). I have deliberately not spoiled it for myself, but there were some things that were impossible to not spoil (mostly the multiple-endings thing, and that its based on when you beat Lavos, and that there's a New Game Plus).

So, right now I'm up to Magus. Haven't fought him yet. At what point should I go for Lavos for a good ending and a good start on the New Game Plus? And at what point should I go for Lavos in the New Game Plus, once I get to it?

First, I'll note the multiple endings are nooot actually all THAT extensive. They were also in the original SNES version. The only real amazing optional ending is if you beat Lavos as soon as physically possible and beat him. For that one, I'd highly recomend you beat the entire game first before doing it. So go for Lavos only after you have completely everything. Hell, unless you're really skilled at RPGs, that's the only time you will be ABLE to beat him.

Also, as a side note, Chrono Trigger DS has some after end game stuff unique to it. Enjoy :smallamused:

Very minor Chrono Trigger spoiler (keeping it as discreet as possible):Towards the end of the game, you'll get a bunch of optional sidequests listed off at you by the old man at the End of Time. The best ending comes after completing all those sidequests. That's assuming you want the "ideal" ending and to have the best equipment when you fight the final battle and start the New Game Plus.

Mind you, that's for the SNES version. I would guess it's mostly the same for the DS version.

I just had an interesting dream. I was helping conduct diplomatic talks between two parties. The representatives were Tony Stark on the other side, and either Doctor Horrible or the Tenth Doctor on ours. I think it changed, as dreams do.

I for one am curious as to what was discussed...

Take away most of the game-specific terms/actions and this is applies frighteningly well to World of Tanks. Some boxes can even be checked off permanently. Thankfully, you learn to ignore it pretty quickly.

Also, put large images in spoiler boxes. They get a bit unwieldy when unspoilered, especially if you have a small screen (like me).

Fortunately, I'm not very good, so I just don't play ranked games and rarely PvP.
But still, I've experienced some of those, and it is terrible.

In a recent game, I was playing as Renekton and no one would help top lane. So frustrating.
In a less recent game, I was Ashe, and Yi and I both called top before the game started. So, our Shyvana, went top and refused to leave. Just stood there dancing. Turns out she wanted top to solo.
She could have called it in advance! So, I flatly told Yi to stay where he was and I walked all the way across the map so we didn't lose too much in the bottom lane.
I can't even remember very much of that game, but that Shyvana's attitude...

Apologies for venting.

I've been level 30 since the end of Season 1 Ranked and I've still never tried it. For one, I'm simply not good enough to do Ranked and not get yelled at by the other 9 players. For two, I end up playing whoever I feel like at the time as opposed to picking to suit the team and my item builds are often dumb (Aspd Anivia, ho!)

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much. Just play to have fun and all that jazz.

Thankfully, Chalice of Harmony has an upgrade now so that's not a problem.

Admittedly, I only really play Anivia to troll the pubbies with when I play with friends. Though, taking Wall first has actually netted me a few kills before because they can't get away from the turret.

Honestly, Aspd works on everything, but I think that might be because I really love Ionic Spark as an item because LIGHTNING, LIGHTNING EVERYWHERE.

Like, one of my last games. I went Aspd Blitzcrank. In the end I had Ninja Tabi, Ionic Spark, Manamune (fully charged for once which never happens), Maw of Malmortius, Tiamat and Frozen Mallet. It was so much fun. Entire game consisted of run up to the enemy, pop Overdrive, beat the living crap outta them until they tried to run away (which I countered by using Power Fist to knock em up) and then if they still managed to live through that, I'd just grab em with Rocket Fist and wail on them some more. It was hilarious and one of my funnest games recently.

Of course, it did kinda help that I pretty much never used mana so when I did actually get low on HP, I got something like a 1k power shield from my passive + the magic shield from Malmortius.

I think it helps that I really love playing as Blitz though. He so fun.

@Amiel: Only one what?

And yes, I noticed that. I still prefer to get my other items first before upgrading it. Otherwise it throws my build out of whack inside my head.
I myself rarely get Ionic Spark, despite playing a few champions who benefit from attack speed. That's probably an oversight on my part.

I've never actually played as Blitzcrank... I've seen other people play him and versing him is rather annoying. But he doesn't seem to fit into my playstyle.
But, you never know... I do after all play an unusual mix of champions.
Galio, Renekton, Warwick, Ashe, LeBlanc, Morgana, Karma, Garen, others that I play less frequently...
It confuses my friends to no end because they assumed I only play ranged champions, but a lot of my favourites are melee.

@ Amiel: Pretty much, yes.

@ Elemental: Blitz is very annoying to fight against, especially Blitz Bot. He seems to have 100% Rocket Punch hit rate even when you're in the bushes. But I still loves him.

You have good taste in champions though. I have all of those (admittedly I have nearly every single champion but that's beside the point) but out of those LeBlanc and Renekton are my favourites. Renekton because I'm super patriotic crocodileman with my Outback skin and he's such a massive bully and really scary early game (especially when paired with a decent Nasus like my friend) and he's just so awesome. LeBlanc was my main AP carry for a very long time because she's really strong but gets reduced to bad when everyone starts using Banshee's Veils. That said though, I have all her skins for some reason... probably because they're fabulous looking.

I'm currently obsessing over Kog'maw right now though because his butterfly skin is sooooo cute and his joke where he plays the trumpet with his mouth thing is hilarious and spammable.

Anyway, what she said was that she was "euphoric", which I've waited long enough for someone to say ever since it became obvious that Loreen was winning in the ESC votings. I would be much more disappointed that the commentators didn't make a joke on it hadn't my disappointment quota already been filled when I realised that they couldn't do math.

See, this is excessive tabbing. Why do that when you can have excessive WINDOWS. =3

For example, I'd have all those GitP tabs as one window (I pretty much DO, seeing as I'm currently following that game and cheering against the party...*coughs*), one with youtube tabs open to about 5 songs I like and various LPs, one with about 8 tabs of information on various things I'm intending to watch (mostly anime), another one with about 3 times that number of things I'm about to read (whether manga or fanfiction), and were it not for the fact that I don't need any info for D3, probably another one with wiki pages for that.

If I've recently been in class, add a window for wikipedia with about 30 tabs. After I finish one of the aforementioned anime/manga, TV Tropes with about 30 tabs. And of course one for facebook, maybe 3 tabs, one for each GitP group and one to browse in.

See, that's MUCH easier to navigate around! =D

The idea is that the Lich villian of the campaign, somehow or another (the party doesn't yet know how, though I do) seperated his phylactery into pieces. So our heroes are hunting for the pieces.

Uwaaaah! I don't understand things like this at all. You mention that "this thing" is annoying, but when a solution comes for "this thing" you're like "naw, I can live with it". It's probably just me, but that REALLY grates on me.

Well, not in a "I am annoyed at you" way, you're still a cool cactus and all that, but the basic idea of "I don't think a thing, but when I learn about how to fix it I don't do it" is something that just baffles me.

I'm so laid-back, I'm almost horizontal :P
Yeah, like Teddy says, the expenditure required to 'fix' the problem probably isn't worth it, and it really doesn't annoy (overly), I'm just been prickly

Ugh, with that system, I'd have to alternate between the tabs bar and the windows bar whenever switching around among my tabs. I think I prefer just sticking to the tabs bar and using my scroll button to quickly navigate among them. Especially at those days when I have my windows bar filled up as well.

This is true, but with this system, I don't have to worry as much about making sure I rearrange tabs to keep everything organized, as each page will be generally surrounded by similar things.

Oh, right. Probably needs explanation.

When I see or read something creepy during the day, I tend to think about it as I'm trying to fall asleep. It's very difficult to intentionally think about something else without coming back to "I'm not thinking about X". However, random banter is by its nature something that naturally connects to just about anything, so I can think about how I would talk about it in RB, and from there I can transition to just about anything that happened in RB.

...........

ok.

This is gonna take a bit of writing.

First. Melee is not better then Brawl. By a long shot. They fixed problems in Brawl.

Second. Sunshine is...not better then Galaxy, at all. That...no. I LIKE Sunshine, and I can't say that.

Third. The Zelda games are not even remotely comparable to Wind Waker, they are on different systems. Wind Waker must be compared to Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. You win out on TP, I do like Wind Waker a little better then it. But not on Skyward Sword.

Fourth, and more egregious. F Zero Grand Prix for the Gamecube is terrible.

Now, yes, this is all a personal opinion thing. Games are like that. But there are points in every single one of these that are not opinion based.

Melee had glitches. Glitches used in the metagame, but still glitches.

Sunshine....was a side step in the wrong direction for every step forward it took. Taking out the long jump kind of crippled the platforming, even if Fludd changed it up.

Wind Waker, though great, had the Triforce hunting. That was no.

F Zero Grand Prix continues to be terrible.

AsteriskAmp
2012-06-05, 08:13 PM
Gamecube WAS the best though. Melee was sweeter than BrawlMelee was dull, you needed people to have fun, even then, it lacked online.
And when you did have people around, Fox, Final Destination no items was almost a standard.

Brawl now, I can play that with my younger siblings without them going away in boredom after two matches of uniformity. I can play with my parents the storyline without them feeling its a mindless fight game. And in the worst case, the trophy shooter keeps grandma occupied. I can play it with friends really far away, or nearby without the need for them to come over.

Sunshine is better than Galaxy
No, Sunshine is pretty good and awesome, BUT
No real flying
No Roaslina
No epic fight on a sun at the end
The story wasn't really good, the gameplay was great though, but galaxy also has fantastic gameplay.

Also, no multiplayer. 2P mode isn't AWESOME, but it does get use, specially with younger gamers or when you want them to play but don't want to simply watch them die horribly. Or when you are with someone who isn't a gamer but don't want to have him/her sit next to you without doing anything or feel left out.

Wind Waker has much more fun travel than the DS Zeldas
In Twilight Princess travelling isn't a pain. Skyward Sword has better fights but craptastic transport. The DS games have portability and multiplayer.

Also, it had F Zero. That game STILL looks good.:smallcool:
It looks great and plays like Windows Vista at its initial release. You will crash often without reason and it will ignore input and when you are about to win [or save a word document] the AI will cheat and make you crash or pass you [and decide that word is now Realtime priority and your system crashes].

F-Zero only use is being F-Zero last released game. I prefer playing WiiWare F-Zero than GX

The VS. works nicely though.

On Nintendo: I'm not sure finally accessing good games made for other systems is necessarily a huge plus. And who wants a new Luigi's Mansion? =P

I agree with most of the other stuff, though. And I really liked Sunshine. Other than I feel it had some pacing issues warly on that make me...uninterested in trying it again. =P

Failed my driving test AGAIN. Because I took more than 3 minutes to parallel park. Instant failure. So dumb.
On the bright side, as consolation I stopped at an outlet mall and got THE CUTEST Coach bag for only $35.

That sucks. *hugs*...my driving test, they didn't even make me parallel park. =\

@Mauve: Don't worry. You're still a better driver than I am.

Nintendo has more console exclusive since Nintendo itself makes games. Add on top games for other systems and there is a console with obvious greater access to games on the market.

What's subtle? I am confused. Explain yourself!

... Never mind :smalltongue: it's not important and kinda dumb.

This is true, however, I think by now, anyone who was really interested in playing those games would have acquired a console that could play them.

Note that I meant from now on, the playing field is back to where it was with the N64, where the obvious best alternative is again the one who apart from having access to the 3rd parties has 1st party titles, excellent ones at that. And the best control scheme, and the best launch lineup, and the best mission statement.

Not only that, but some of us never bought such consoles because had a PC and deemed we really needn't anything apart from it and a wii.

If you're implying video games as a way of getting girls, false. I'm already dating Perenelle, as it happens.

If you're implying something else, then I have no clue what it could be :smalltongue:

I have just rediscovered Odell Down Under. That old edutainment game where you're a fish and you swim around and eat other fish. I loved that game when I was a kid. A major factor in inspiring my love for the ocean, which persists to this day (though not quite as strongly as before).

I was referencing an old joke a certain mod (who's exact name escapes me at the moment) made in a previous RB thread - actually i think it was one of yours. Someone was asking if visiting san antonio was worth a six hour drive, he said the smooth thing to do would be to say yes, and then to offer to drive there and show her the sights. So yes, I was implying you were meeting a girl through a video game, because i didn't know you were dating Perenelle.

In retrospect, it was hardly relevant and kinda stupid to make that reference that nobody would get anyway :smallconfused:

They didn't even add parallel parking to the test until some years after I took mine. Been driving for more than 20 years now and I think I've actually had to parallel park more than half-a-dozen times, and I don't recall *ever* doing a three point turn (because it's usually easier to turn round in the entrance of a side street).

You should tell someone you love them today, because life is short. But shout it at them in German, because life is also terrifying and confusing.

It wouldn't work... I know too many people with enough of an understanding of German for them to translate what I'm yelling.
And besides, there's no one I want to tell that I love them.

In other news: Բոլորն այստեղ զարմանալի!

Because being yelled at in Armenian is probably an experience no one here is familiar with.

German is the only language for which you wouldn't flinch if your commander in the trench shouted "I love you!".

I mean, could anyone of you tell the difference between "Ich liebe dich!" and "Achtung, Schpitfeuer!". :smallwink:

Is that what Armenian lettering looks like? Because that's cool looking, like something LOTR-ish.

If Google Translate is to be believed, that is the script used by the Armenians.
Unless of course, I somehow got it confused with Azerbaijani, which I was also considering using...

And yes, it does look cool.

Best German is indeed clearly the best language; and it has one of the most excellent words of all: schadenfreude.
