Prologue - Vesselwinds

1st of Granite - 251

Freedom. That's what this expedition means. Freedom. Freedom from the thumb of nobles, from the whining of our monarch. Freedom to chart a new course for we seven dwarves and whoever shall come to follow us.

The expedition arrived at its destination today, the land known as Eraloslan, Vesselwinds. It is hot here. Muggy, warm jungle nestled into mountain. Here we will strike up a fortress. Here we begin our story.

But first, allow me to introduce myself.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/pic1.png

In addition to my duties as expedition leader, I am also a humble yet skilled carpenter. I hope to use those skills for the making of many bins, barrels, and beds for the fortress.

My companions are

Memnarch, a miner by trade but also skilled at engraving and masonry
Glaciel, also a miner, but as well proficient in the realms of masonry and gem cutting
Hawkeye, stalwart outdoorsdwarf whose skills in woodcutting and herbalism will prove useful in surviving the wilderness. She is also skilled in carpentry, though not as much as I, and is a novice in the ways of the axedwarf
Sleeprira. Stonecrafter, architect, and mechanic, his skills will prove to be the cornerstone of an early economy for our fortress.
Valaqil, a planter and a brewer, he will maintain our stores of food and drink for years to come, I am sure.
Phase, a cook and thresher, key for processing the foodstuffs Valaqil will be growing. He has also received basic training in the medicinal arts. Let us hope we shall never use them

May the gods bless us and see we encounter none of the dreaded Fun

1st of Slate - 251

Farms have been completed, as have some basic workshops for food processing and stockpiles for the food. The miners are already hard at work mining out areas for stoneworking, both masonry and stonecrafts.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/pic2.png

24th of Malachite – 251

The first wave of migrants to our fortress arrives. Two farmers and their child, as well as a glazer and his beekeeper wife. The beekeeper seems proficient in the art of the hunt, equipped with a crossbow and quiver. She sets off to hunt... I prepare an outdoor area to store refuse and conduct butchery.

1st of Galena – 251

The beekeeper, a truly deadly dwarf named Maid, shoots and kills an elephant. I hurry along ordering a butchery. Her kill will not go to waste. Tonight, we dine on elephant.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/pic3.png

15th of Galena – 251

THE DEAD WALK. HIDE WHILE YOU CAN.

The fortress is ordered sealed with walls. Any dwarves outside will be left behind.

20th of Galena – 251

The butchered skin of an elephant comes shivering to life. It proceeds to kill a cook. The cook comes to life and proceeds to head into the fortress. I send our miners against the menace... but the beast overpowers them. Maid plinks away with her crossbow, but its too little too late..

27th of Galena -251

The necromancer is spotted within our fortress. Maid is ordered to kill her.

28th of Galena – 251

Maid falls to the zombies. She killed seven of the bastards before she fell. I hear them coming. If anyone reads this, be warned. The dead walk. The dead walk. I fear we are lost I fear--

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/pic4.png

END OF JOURNAL

Notes: Well that was certainly a... Fun start. I knew our fort would die eventually, but I didn't expect Fun to hit so soon. I was totally unprepared for the zombie assault, didn't hole up the fort in time, and was slaughtered. Time to start anew, I guess...

Part One - Graspedoars 252

1st of Granite – 252

Our expedition has arrived. I am wary. Very wary. I have heard reports of a necromancer about, one that tore apart another expedition. Still, this land looks lush and fertile, with tall mountains for digging a fortress into. I shall call it Graspedoars, for oars are what we grasped coming down the river to here. But first, let me introduce myself.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p2.png

My hands, the hands of a grower, shall tend to the fields of this fertile land and, from here, we shall grow a new place for our people to live. My companions, six in number, stand beside me.

Memnarch, miner, mason, engraver
Volatar, miner, mason, gem cutter
xp194, carpenter and expedition leadership
Starsign, woodcutter, herbalist, novice axedwarf
Scuzzball, stonecrafter, mechanic, achitect
Phase, thresher, cook, novice medic

20th Felsite – 252

A wild boar got into the fortress today, startling workers coming in and out. I decided to let the boar be. In the meantime, the miners are hard at work digging through earth making way for farms, workshops, and stockpiles. Our fortress grows mightier by the day

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p1.png

23rd Felsite – 252

more wild boars have appeared. Their presence in the entranceway is becoming a nuisance. I ordered volatar to go and chase them off with his pickaxe.

1st Hematite – 252

First summer in Graspedoars has begun. It is warm here, humid and muggy. And yet, the coming of the summer seems glorious to me. I redouble my farming efforts, sowing pig tails into the ground.

23rd Malachite – 252

The first wave of migrants have arrived to Graspedoars. Among them are:

An engraver
A metalsmith
Two farmers
A beekeeper
A butcher
A milker
A wood burner

All of them are quickly set to hauling. There are many heavy objects that need to be moved around the fortress.

Meanwhile, the fortress itself is coming along nicely:

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p3.png
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p4.png

When the caravan arrives in Autumn, they'll be quite pleased!

18th Galena - 252

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p5.png

The undead have arrived at our fortress in the form of three animated elven corpses. Attempts are made to wall off the entrance, to great success. Two dwarves, a farmer and a milker, was caught outside when the wall went up. We could hear their screams as they torn apart...

22nd Galena - 252

One of our water buffalo was attacked outside of the fortress. But pansy elf zombies are no match for dwarven raised water buffalo. It gored apart two zombies, with one remaining.

16th Limestone - 252

The one remaining zombie is outside. We're without any real weapons, so I'm ordering the fort remain behind the wall. The miners have been ordered to dig down, search for caverns. The water buffalo that killed two zombies still lives, scars from its battles covering its body. She has been named Thikutalab, Booksquirts. Its an ironic name.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p6.png

27th Limestone 252 -252

Metals have been discovered. Tetrahedrite, garneirite, even native gold. No caverns, however. Our fortress has no source of fresh water. I can only hope our supply of alchohol can sustain us.

12th Timber - 252

The one zombie siege has been broken! In a stroke of ingenuity, our mechanic Scuzzball dwarves built cage traps behind the wall and then ordered its deconstruction. The zombie, lured in by an fleeing yak, ran straight into the cage trap, causing it to be captured. Our dwarves can roam free once again!

16th Timber - 252

An outpost liason has arrived at the fortress, along with a caravan full of goods. A trade outpost, built seperate from the fortress, is ordered to be filled with Scuzzball's crafts.

20th Timber - 252

The partial skeleton of a dead cat rises. One of the hammerdwarves accompanying the caravan smashes it back down.... just as more skeletons rise! The merchant guards fight valiantly, but it is clear a necromancer lurks nearby.

2nd Moonstone - 252

Disaster. The merchants and the guards have been slaughtered. The drawbridge has been raised up once again to shield from any undead, but it may be too late. Two more of our own remain outside of the fort, my good friend Starsign and a wood burner... they will fall swiftly, I fear. Still no sight of the necromancer responsible

22nd Moonstone – 252

The trumpeting of mighty elephants echoes through the fortress. It seems the zombies are attacking wildlife now, since they've run out of dwarves to feast on.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p7.png

25th Moonstone - 252

We hear an elephant gore zombies. The dwarves have taken to calling the elephant Luslemashem, Puzzledpulled. Another one is named Engiglecad, Flaxcleaned.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p8.png
http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p9.png

28th Moonstone – 252
An elephant falls to a zombie yak while another earns its named. Kirarkegeth, the Rightshold. We continue working in our shelter...

17th Opal – 252
I've ordered a tunnel dug under the river. I haven't seen the zombies swim yet, so I hope the other side of the river will be safe from them.

5th Obsidian – 252
The tunnel is complete and we have surfaced on the other side of the river. The zombies are not able to cross. Or, if they are, they are unwilling to. We should be free from any reanimated dead from this side.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w118/kpenguin222/y1p10.png

15th Obsidian - 252

More zombies arrive and besiege the fortress. Luckily, they arrive on the side of the river where everything is sealed up.

1st Granite - 253

The first year of Graspedoars has completed. We are still besieged by undead, but we are surviving. Barely. I leave this fortress in the hands of the next overseer. May you guide it to glory.

Notes: Well, that was Fun. And hey, this time we didn't even die! Not all of us, anyway. Yet. We should probably set up a minecart rail from one side of the river to the next alongside the tunnel, to quickly move supplies from one side to the other. We should also set up a plumbing system and get a well going. we can access river water now, but if something pops up on the other side of the river, we might need to lock that side up too.

Selected entries from the journal of overseer Maid
The Tenth of Granite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
The fortress is in a sorry state. We are trapped here, inside our walls. Walls of sand and dirt, no less. A far cry from the proper dwarven stronghold's walls of stone and metal. They are solid however, and in our circumstances, I do not have the luxury of insisting on proper walls. The damned undead still moan outside our raised drawbridge, and I do not trust the seeming safety from the tunnel across the river. But beyond the safety of persons, a far more menacing threat is upon us. For now we have enough food - two hens remain, still in their egg laying prime, as well as our farms; but our thirst will be our undoing. Even if we are forced to the horrifying extreme of drinking water, if we are forced to fully retreat inside of our walls, we will have no source of water to make our alcohol, or even drink in desperate times.
And so I have ordered preparations made for a single brave volunteer - formerly a farmer - to be equipped with a heavy mace and copper armor. Further I order the start of a new shaft dug to probe the depths for the caverns that I know must be down there. I cannot afford to be wrong, for if I fail, we will all die of thirst, and that must not happen. I must go now, and forge the orders in Kippy's name, the fort still trusts him, and I am only recently arrived, having snuck in the rear tunnel when no dwarf was looking. It is a shape that the last year weighs so heavily on such a noble dwarf.

The Twentieth of Granite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
The foundations for a quick and crude metal foundry have been places near the existing stockpiles. I pray that they are finished in time.

The Fifth of Slate, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Our metal industry is complete, I only wish I could afford to spare more than the single dwarf on it. She works tirelessly and without complaint, a true dwarven hero.
Outside, the land is dominated by the shrieking rage of elephants. I shudder to think what will happen once the foul necromancer raises their fallen corpses.

The Sixth of Felsite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Our fortress is secure, however, the sanity of our dwarves is at stake. Objecting to haven been risen as a zombie, Starsign has come back to haunt us. I have ordered a memorial slab erected in Starsign's honor.
In other news, our smith has forged enough metal to craft the arms and armor for our brave volunteer.
Outside the fort, the undead still rampage, but no sign of the necromancer can be seen. Corpses lay where they fell, rotting.

The Thirteenth of Felsite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
'Starsign' Rithetes has been put to rest

The Twelfth of Hematite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Today has been mixed. By all reports, the reservoir I ordered created is full of fresh and pure river water. The bad news is that filing the reservoir temporarily drained the stream enough for zombies to cross over to the 'safe' side. The fortress is safe, but the surface is now closed to us. Our only path now leads us down, and Jefford, our farmer turned military, is now ready, and armed to the teeth. In truth, I find his presence quite comforting. I must go now, the caverns await us.

The Twentieth of Hematite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
The caverns have been struck. I can already feel the blessed cavern air in my longs. I have ordered large areas cleared for trees to grow, with the caverns struck, we are safe here, in our fortress. I do not know what to do about the zombie horde outside, but I know everything will be all right. We are dwarves after all, and we belong deep in the earth.

Selected entries from the journal of overseer Maid
The Twelfth of Malachite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
The memorial hall for our brave and fallen dwarves has been erected. Mayhaps their spirits now give us peace.
Work on the massive underground caverns for the large mushrooms we can use for wood has begun, as well as a small project to rid us of the undead menace. Because both projects require the attentions of our minors, both are going slow, but both are only of little immediately priority. We are safe, for now, and want for nothing.

The Twenty-Seventh of Malachite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
A joyous miracle has just happened. Amongst the death and walking dead outside of our fortress, our brave volunteer militia command have given birth to a wonderful dwarven girl. I have ordered double alcohol rations in celebration.
In unrelated news, we finally have enough bunks for every dwarf still alive. It will be nice to sleep in a bed again.

The Twenty-First of Galena, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Those brave enough to take a look outside the fortress have reported roving packs of kobolds, stealing the dead merchant's goods from the trade deport. Such greedy beasts, yet they seem to be avoiding the undead. Perhaps their numbers are lessening.

The Seventeenth of Limestone, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Another joyous day. Another baby had been born in our fortress, this time a little boy. The undead continue to be seen less and less, perhaps we will be able to leave soon. But for now, we must remain indoors.

The Twenty-Seventh of Sandstone, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
I visited the excavation site today. It is far from finished, but already young tower caps spread from the ground. I wonder if we should ever step outside, we are safe here, and self-suffecient.

The First of Moonstone, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Winter has arrived, and my time here runs short. The dwarves are beginning to suspect that it is I, and not kippy, that is running things around here. I will need to take my leave soon.

The Second of Opal, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Calamity! I was woken out of a sound sleep by one of our scout as he ran past sounding the alarm. It turns out, the necromancer has returned, and the amount of undead has nearly tripled overnight. This is foul news indeed.

The Eleventh, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Scouts have reported the arrival of a second necromancer, in the company of two undead elves. I am beginning to think the surface is barred to us.

The Twenty-Fourth of Obsidian, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Three
Preparations for my departure have been made... it is none too soon, I am almost discovered.
More importantly, a means to slowly thin the numbers of the undead has been devised and slowly being implimented. I do not think I will be around to see it, however.

The First of Granite, in the dwarven year Two-Hundred and Fifty-Four
I have been discovered! I must flee!

Update One
So apparently they made me overseer of the fort after that Maid person absconded. Who am I? Call me RPharazon. We random dwarves have names, you know. You guys simply never ask.
Anyhoo, my first order of business was to revamp the fort. The layout was haphazard, resources were wasted, stockpiles were random, the farms made no sense, and the entrances were weak. I reworked the entire workshop system, assigned new stockpiles and cancelled projects to save resources. Wood is our main concern, since we don't have access to the outside world anymore. I made a new farm since the previous one was built on half-arid land.
The entrances were sealed up entirely, since I don't trust the stability of those bridge gates, even if the resident architect assures me of their strength. The zombies will not get through, by the beard of Armok.

Update Two
The resident ghosts have been put to rest, except for one who won't tell us his name. He seems to be tormenting one of the babies. No idea why.
Work on the fort progresses well, and our new farms have been set up and are running. Nobody seemed to be hauling much. I asked them why, and they said that the previous person told them not to. I got mad and kicked a few in the shins. That got them moving.

Update Three
Summer. A little baby girl named Valaqil mysteriously popped out of my head. I think that's how new dwarves are made. Maybe we're a fungus? I've got a new meat shield and portable club, in any case.

Update Four
Autumn. Another ghost that refuses to tell us his name has risen. Now we've got two annoying ghosts. It's getting old quick, and poor baby Frankelshtein is getting traumatized.

Update Five
There are sounds of a kerfuffle outside. My keen dwarven TELEPATHOMAGICK (actually just a cone I made from wood scraps) tells me that a couple of kobold ambushes appeared. They probably smashed some zombies but I bet that they turned into zombies themselves. Either way, we've got far too many zombies. At least kobold zombies are weak, though.
To top it off, another ghost that won't tell us his name has risen. Poor little Frankelshtein threw a bunch of tantrums since the ghosts keep bullying him. Why can't the ghosts attack the zombies, honestly.

Update Six
Winter. There's nothing really to say, but there's been a smoothing and engraving programme to pretty up the fortress. Frankelshtein keeps throwing tantrums. I have half a mind to throw the kid out the airlock. Exploratory mining has found a lot of cobaltite and whatnot, with a few veins of greyish metal-bearing ores of various sorts. Our exploratory shaft deeper into the world hasn't found magma yet, sadly.
My time as overseer is at an end, thank goodness. I didn't really do much except make the fortress more efficient and self-reliant. I'm leaving a map behind in the overseer's office, and I left notes around the fortress. Hopefully we'll have a working magma smelter next year after some exploratory mining. We have plenty of metal, but no wood at all. This will not do for a proud dwarven colony.

2012-06-05, 12:50 PM
A fresh spring dawns on the beautiful green hills. Light slowly spreads across the landscape flowers all along the rippling landscape open up, absorbing the glorious sunlight. Small animals skitter about in the undergrowth, searching for something to eat. Butterflies of every color flitter about, landing here and there

The sunlight continues its merry way across the grass glinting off the armor of a fallen soldier, before coming to a rest upon the grey, pockmarked skin of an undead elephant. The elephant lets out a roar, but it turns into a gurgle halfway through since the once glorious creature only has bits and pieces left of its throat. Its yellow eyes move to glare at the source of its pain: Those darn dwarves. All was well before they arrived. They are obviously at fault. The elephant yearns for the chance to trample just one of them, but at the moment they are out of reach.

***

Urist McVolatar stood by the small window in the rock, hands clasped behind his back. He held the stare of the zombified elephant for several minutes before the creature broke eye contact and lumbered away in search of some flower to smash. Volatar remained standing for a while, thinking. How did we get into this mess.

After a long while Volatar turned away and began his long walk through the fortress. Today was inspection day. So off he went, kicking a pebble down the hallway.

The underground food and tower cap farms both looked to be in good shape. Food and wood would not be a problem for a while.

Memnarch toiled away in one of the workshops, carving yet another rock door. She nodded to Volatar as he passed by.

A quick stop by the booze stockpile confirmed Volatar’s suspicions. BlackFox was still there, drinking away. Volatar shook his head and continued on, but stumbled over the sleeping form of Phase. Why he slept in the hallway no one knew. Phase was a strange dwarf. Maybe his kid had taken his bed again. Volatar didn’t care.

The screams of Valaqil echoed down the hallway. Obviously the ghost had not left yet. Fixing that problem would be a top priority.

Finally, many levels down, Volatar arrived at the bottom of the mine. They had not yet reached the magma. He would make sure they did.

Sounds good to me. I never liked flowers anyways.

I would train a few marksdwarves and build a platform one z-level above the zombielands. That way you can still have migrants.

Migrants dislike lava, you see.

Alternatively you can turn the safe side of the river into a siege line.

Hmm...Is the necromancer still kicking? If he's still around lava may be the best bet. Or you could build some cage traps and try to bait him with corpses.

There are several, and new ones keep passing through resurrecting more stuff as they go.

I'm no DF veteran...

But isn't "Flood Everything With Magma" one of the core rules of DF, second only to "Losing is fun!"?

First order of business. More space for Coffins. Because I expect more deaths in the future years.

But I like my tombs to be pretty, so I designate a pretty one.

I then decide to count the zombies. There are over 100.

RPharazon has given birth to a baby girl. She is named Rake, after her grandfather.

It’s like an undead highway out there.

And now there is a ghost haunting Volatar. I had better get this new burial ground working soon.

WARM STONE LOCATED.

Memnarch discovered yet another cavern while trying to break through to the magma.

And the magma sea has now been located.

http://i.imgur.com/EAkxh.png

An attempt to flood the magma sea with water from a nearby lake failed. The hole plugged itself.

After the second attempt succeeds, an ominous message appears.

I really hope no one notices that I am no longer solid.

RPharazon plops out yet another female dwarf baby. She has a beard already.

All is well in the for- FORGOTTEN BEAST.

Good thing it can’t reach the fort. I hope.

And my year ends without too much incident.

Dear Journal,
That fool of an overseer, Volatar, has been keeping us underground all year, like the overseer before him, and the overseer before him... The dead walk, our caverns echo with the cries of a monster, and worst of all, poltergeists roam out most industrious halls. My youth was spent combating undead, it seems the Dwarven ancestors on high have seen fit to deliver me to where I'm needed most, and that fool of an Overseer denies my requests for action, citing a personal history he claims is "Erratic" and "Unconventional." Bah! Because I sleep in the hall and eat only Plump Helmets, he thinks me odd? What is one voice among the many I hear? You understand me, Journal. You are my dearest friend.

The overseer is going down to check on the newly discovered Magma Sea. I think I shall give him a piece of my mind...

Love,
Phase

With Necromancers active in the area, I would recommend incinerating corpses, rather than entombing them. Nothing worse than a flood of undead emerging from your fortress.

Dear Journal,
That dear old man Volatar never returned from the magma sea the other night. The others searched for hours, but to no avail. We are left to assume that, in a fit of drunken reverie, he slipped and fell into the fires below. Surely the Dwarven holidays have claimed more lives than the dreaded elephants. I sweat that were I Overseer, I would be a consummate teetotaler, drinking no more than a gallon of alchohol at a given meal.

We will need new management. In the meantime, however, the fort requires an interim overseer. I was as humble as possible when I suggested myself, for I tire of threshing and also believe I can be a much better overseer than any of these pootha dwarves. My darling child shall sit in on the fort meeting and make further suggestions. I am certain they will come to the only sensible solution.

Love,
Phase

4th of Granite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Dear Journal,
After much deliberation, I have appointed myself overseer. As my first declaration, I am abolishing the integer-based system of date management. Numbers are confusing and make the heads of certain dwarves hurt with overthinking. From now on, we shall refer to the years of history by the accomplishments of the brilliant people within. This year shall be remembered as the year when the glorious Overseer Phase began the initiative to destroy all the horrid ghosts that plague our fair halls.

As my second proclamation, I am beginning the initiative to destroy the many vile poltergeists that roam the passages and corridors of our fine fortress. I have set our chief military dwarf, a good friend of mine named Jefford, on the task. He assures me that ghosts are incorporeal, and therefore immune to any of our modern weaponry. But I say to him nay! If one were simply to bombard the ectoform with a suitable quantity of projectiles, at least one must hit a vital spot! He has said he will see what he can do.

17th of Granite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Jefford has reported that the attempts to slay the ghosts have failed. I informed him readily that it was a matter of course that this was the case. One cannot simply slay a ghost with sword or bow. I immediately order my best stonemason, one “Memnarch” away from his duties in beginning step one of my cunning six part plan to rid us of all ailments and enemies and become the godking of dwarfkin. I tell him to begin crafting and carving slabs to memorialize our fallen dead. Perhaps then their souls can be put to rest.

19th of Granite, Year of the Slain Ghost
After a day’s worth of crafting, our undead enemies have been memorialized. Thus they are bound again to the material plane, and I had Jefford swiftly end their unruly existences. Well, one of their existences. There remain a good half-dozen yet to slay. But no matter! Memnarch is back to work on Project Killfrog, and soon we shall be free from our cavernous tomb.

25th of Granite, Year of the Slain Ghost
I have attempted, to no avail, to order the dwarves to make me a golden crown in honor of slaying yet another ghost last night. They instead continued to drink heavily and haul around rocks as though there were nothing wrong. Pitiful, I do say.

28th of Granite, Year of the Slain Ghost
And so another month passes. We have fewer ghosts, at the very least. Production continues on Project Killfrog, and I am debating whether Volatar, mad though he was, had a proper notion when he went down to view the magma sea alone. Only perhaps instead of staring into it distractedly, we can use the heat of the earth to power our machinery, heat our metals, and burn the scourge of undead from the surface...

I shall file this revelation away as Plan B, should Project Killfrog fail.

5th of Slate, Year of the Slain Ghost
I heard the shrieks of a Kobold above ground today as I was preparing the day’s meal. They ended quickly, no doubt suffering an attack from the undead. I would be happy to see the vermin fall, if only it weren’t likely to rise itself and join the zombie horde.

19th of Slate, Year of the Slain Ghost
Project Killfrog continues to develop as anticipated. I order extra safety precautions to soothe the fears of the populace. I swear on my mother’s beardgrave, I will not have more than one or two casualties on my hands after the project is complete.

6th of Felsite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Our Plump Helmet harvest recently was somewhat underwhelming. I shall be speaking with our planters about it most forcefully. Meanwhile, Project Killfrog has moved to a standstill as I have begun wondering how to seal the passage without Memnarch encountering his demise.

7th of Felsite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Production continues, now that I have had a day to sleep on it and determine that Memnarch is expendable.

18th of Felsite
The dead walk again, er, again. It was only a matter of time. What is fortuitous is that it coincides with the completion of step one of Project Killfrog. Steps four through six have been deemed unnecessary. Step two will be initiated by the end of the month. Memnarch has been informed of the step’s occurrence, and will be given the full details after he has been sealed into the wall.

19th of Felsite
After realizing that in order for Memnarch to be sealed into the wall, we must also seal in our only working pickaxe, production has begun on a drawbridge, for the safety of all mining-related appliances involved in Project Killfrog.

Pickaxes are very expensive to replace.

20th of Felsite, Year of the Slain Ghost
I would have contacted an outside contractor for aid in construction in our drawbridge, but of course that is impossible due to the constant shrilling of the undead poltergeists making it impossible to concentrate on making glue for stamps. Also the zombies. I have instead contacted my trusted advisor, Inyu, and together we shall collaborate on this construction.

23rd of Felsite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Construction has begun on the drawbridge, which I have declared part two of my six part Project Killfrog. I can only dream of the beautiful day when I shall awake to find not only the forgotten beast below, but the hideous undead above, all destroyed! It shall be a fine morn indeed! Hahahaha! Bwahahahahahaha!

In other news, we have run out of my medication.

1st of Hematite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Summer brings with it the completion of the drawbridge. I have realized that neither myself nor Inyu know how to actually operate a drawbridge. I shall spend some time cogitating on this fact and return to you then, journal.

8th of Hematite, Year of the Slain Ghost
With the aid of our master stoneworker, Scuzzball, I have learned how to operate drawbridges. We come ever closer to the execution of Project Killfrog. (Get it? Execution? I CRACK MYSELF UP.) I aim to have destroyed all enemies of the Dwarven people by the end of the month!

11th of Hematite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Due to an uproar from the civilian populace, I have elected to build the lever that activates the bridge in the statuary, so that they might observe the statues and pull the lever at the same time. I feel this will boost morale for some odd reason.

19th of Hematite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Our first test of the drawbridge has proven extremely successful! We would repeat the tests, but that seems boring. Project Killfrog now enters its most active sequence.

20th of Hematite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Memnarch has been aboveground far too long. If a single zombie makes it down here, think of the possible consequences. Regardless of Pickaxe cost, I shall not let my fortress fall this day!

I am ordering the drawbridge shut. Memnarch had his chance to live. Perhaps that Forgotten Beast, Rubal, can still save him yet.

The zombies descend the stairs rapidly, headed down the tunnel to the echoing cries of the beast below. With Memnarch dead, there is nothing to stop their descent. I can hear even now the cries of the beast as it slaughters the undead that flock to its waiting claws.

28th of Hematite, Year of the Slain Ghost
The cries of the beast below have finally died down. Between the slats of the drawbridge, I can see the zombies ascend. Memnarch has yet to return, and I have given up hope in that regard.

I can only pray to our ancestors that the beast himself cannot be raised from his eternal slumber...

I really need a drink...

1st of Malachite, Year of the Slain Ghost
After a naight off hevy dringkin, i have made up a brillant plan, is will explan tomorrow!

10th of Malachite, Year of the Slain Ghost
Well, a few days have passed, and the fort’s melancholy after the abject failure of Memnarch’s plan has lifted somewhat. I have begun my own project, known only as Operation Hades. I first need another pickaxe, that we may strike the earth once more. This will involve much micromanagement of smelting and smithing. I shall return when able.

24th of Malachite, Year of the Slain Ghost
When asked why everyone was refusing to do work these past few weeks, the fort responded “You said to stay in the statuary until further notice.”

These people, honestly.

5th of Galena, Year of the Slain Ghost
Work proceeds. So much was left undone for Malachite that I worry I may never complete Operation Hades. I worry in vain! I shall purge the surface of the undead scum!

25th of Galena, Year of the Slain Ghost
The fort submits to melancholy more often now, calling for things known as ‘breaks’ and ‘sleep.’ They can sleep when the undead are but ash!

4th of Limestone, Year of the Slain Ghost
Autumn has arrived, and production of the new pickaxe has finally begun. Soon we shall pierce the earth, and we shall begin Operation Hades. I have nothing but optimism for the future!!

5th of Limestone, Year of the Slain Ghost
We are out of alcohol. All is lost.

11th of Limestone, Year of the Slain Ghost
In an attempt to raise spirits in the absence of spirits, our esteemed colleague Scuzzball has arranged a party. I have ordered our woodworker to return to work, but everyone insists on partying, the layabouts.

28th of Limestone, Year of the Slain Ghost
At last, forged from pure copper, a new pick is born. I shall send our new Miner, legendary stoneworker Penguinizer, to strike the Earth and bring us closer to the completion of Operation Hades.

15th of Sandstone, Year of the Slain Ghost
Our lovely farmer, kpenguin, former overseer, has established that Operation Hades is untenable, as zombieflesh contains no fat, and therefore is fireproof, somehow.

Instead, we must work out our meager existence belowground. Hence the beginning of Operation El Dorado. If we can become a fortress with enough wealth and value, perhaps the osmosis of the gold smell will travel far enough north to the lands of the wild, and shall call forth beasts far stronger than the old one that was slain so rapidly. We shall become a beacon to the eldritch!

9th of Timber, Year of the Slain Ghost
Carving gems takes longer than anticipated, but we’re progressing at a fair clip. One dwarf by the name of Emlyn has been eyeing me strangely, of late. I certainly hope I do not have to pull a Memnarch on him...

1st of Moonstone, Year of the Slain Ghost
We are churning out jewelery and golden statues of myself so rapidly I can hardly take the time to admire them before they are carted away. Though we shall need to brace ourselves, winter is coming.

2nd of Opal, Year of the Slain Ghost
Winter marches on, and we have begun construction of Operation El Dorado’s “Room of Opulance, we has it.” Grammar, Inyu assure me, is one hundred percent rightness.

8th of Opal, Year of the Slain Ghost
I have come to realize that, despite my best efforts, I may not live forever. As such, I have requisitioned a hall of engravings, all about my many deeds as the Slayer of Ghostkin. Let the undead beware, for long after they are gone, I shall live on in memory!

1st of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
The New Year approaches rapidly. I fear I may not accomplish all my goals before next year (which shall be known as The Year of Perfect Accomplishment and Escape to the Surface). But I shall try my damndest.

7th of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
After months upon months of not a drop of alcohol, I have ordered kpenguin to brew us some wine from our plump caps. He promptly began hauling rocks instead. typical.

12th of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
Peering into the black well water, I have had a vision of a new beast that approaches from below! Perhaps it will destroy the undead with better results than the previous creature from the depths. It was a huge Sauropod composed of grime and filth. It had three long, hanging tails and it undulated rhythmically. The undead shall need beware of its poisonous sting! I have named it Soshosh Bothonarel Stagshil Vakun, after my father.

14th of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
Another vision of a monster from below! A gigantic hairy crab, it had a pair of branching antennae and a gaunt appearance. Its clear hair is long and straight. I saw it firing webs. Even as I see this vision, I hear the echoing calls of Shoshosh as it ascends the tunnels from Project Killfrog.

18th of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
Shoshosh has perished, as I expected. The mighty undead elephants cracked her in two, we could all hear it from the statuary, the rumblings were so cacophonous.

22nd of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
kpenguin has finally finished brewing alcohol. We shall have plenty of reserves for use to celebrate the end of winter.

28th of Obsidian, Year of the Slain Ghost
And so the year comes to an end. I feel as though the past twelve months have tempered me somewhat, Journal. After such hardships as we’ve overcome this season, I can’t help but think that I have lost some of my aggression towards the others. I look forward to another long year of affluence and monstrous beasts, that we may overcome the undead together under my brilliant guidance!

Excerpts from an untitled journal recovered from the tomb fortress of Graspedoars. Though the author is never named it is speculated that the journal belonged to the overseer at the time.

1st Granite:
Since the departure of the last overseer due to rumors of him murdering the previous overseer, Volatar, I have steeped in to take the role as we require firm leadership if we are to survive in this perilous region. It is unlikely that the investigation against the overseer, known as Phase, will go anywhere as the only witness to Volatar's demise is the accused and Volatar's ghost, which is currently hovering over a lake of magma.

25th Granite:
Some migrants arrived today, poor blighters. Despite being sealed in we could still hear the screams as the undead tore them apart.

11th Slate:
Credit where credit is due, some of those dorfs can sure run! The last few finally dropped from exhaustion and where devoured by the ravenous hoard. Bout time we got some peace and quiet around here.

25th Slate:
Apperently Scuzzball took my suggestion of making stone instruments a little more seriously then I'd expected. He has already churned out several and just stopped by the show off a masterful stone picalo he finished. As I have nothing better for him to do how he chooses to waste his time is no concern of mine.

18th Felsite:
And now an Evlish caravan has arrived. They died even faster the last wave of migrants. Yay more undead for us to deal with.

23rd Hematite:
One of the dead migrant's ghost suddenly appeared inside the fortress. At this point that's hardly surprising anymore and with a shrug the nearby dorfs went back to work. I shall have to appoint someone to memoralize them and see if that won't settle it down.

4th Malachite:
While pouring over maps made of the fortress I noticed that a large cavern had been discovered well bellow us. Further examination lead to confusion as I noticed that the shafts that lead down to eat had been walled off and a raised drawbridge sealed the gap. It wasn't long before I discovered why it had been sealed off, large numbers of undead stalked the cavern. I have decided that something must be done about this and have set in a motion a plane to deal with it.

25th Malachite:
More migrants arrived today, though I suppose calling them food would be just as accurate. Seriously, who keeps sending them out here? One would think that the fact that no news has come from this fort in years would be a decent indicator that somethings wrong. Oh well. With luck this batch won't be as fit as the last and will expire faster so we can have some peace and quiet.

26th Malachite:
The forgotten beast Dirlu has arrived. A great noseless horse twisted into humanoid form, it has a gaunt appereance. Its lilac hair is long and straight. It immediately set upon the nearest undead in the cavern but was overwhelmed by the hoard. In other news the shaft being dug by the river is proceeding nicely. This is phase 1 of the plan to flood the caverns. I'm expecting it to be finished a another 2 months or so.

12th Galene:
I was just informed the undead have risen. In other news water is wet. For whatever reason we are now under siege, because you know having to seal yourself inside of your fort isn't already a siege. To add to the annoyance we have several more ghost floating around. I shall have to revive this situation as apparently my last directive to take care of the problem was ignored.

14th Galene:
While continuing to mine out the shaft RP had another baby girl. This does not seem to be the best possible place to have a child, though while I'm at it I should probably talk to her about having all of her children follow her while mining.

15th Galene:
A large force of goblins arrived today hoping to assault our fort. Instead they got a hefty dose of undead elephants.

18th Galene:
There is a frankly astonishing amount of blood covering the ground where the goblins once stood. And bones, lots of those as well.

15th Sandstone:
Since the goblins perished things have proceed smoothly around here. I just received word that the shaft has been finished. Now all that's left is to install doors at the tunnel entrance and breach the river bottom.

28th Sandstone: A
few minor delays later and we are ready. Today we shall purged the caverns with water so that someday we may be able to reclaim for ourselves. Let loose the river!

29th Sandstone: Huh, really should have thought about the five children tailing RP before having her breach the river.

2nd Timber:
TheBritish has become a child while fleeing for his life from the onrushing river. Talk about rites of passage.

3rd Timber:
By some miracle Just as planned everyone made it out safely. The doors have been sealed and now all that's left is to wait for the water to begin its slow work of flooding the caverns.

16th Timber
Oh look, more goblins. I'm starting to wonder if the undead are advertising this place as a rich, juicy fortress ripe for the taking. If not then I have no clue why so many keep rushing to this death trap.

4th Moonstone: The ghost numbers are begging to look like an infestation. More slabs have been ordered so that they may be memorialized.

15th Moonstone:
Its been several months and the plan to flood the caverns is proceeding, though slowly. I failed to notice that the spot chosen for the water to pour out was on the highest point of the entire cavern. As a result its taking a very long time for the water to pool deep enough to begin covering the cavern. I suspect that if it does work it will take years.

16th Moonstone:
While pouring over the maps of the fortress again I discovered something I had previously missed, specifically that the shaft that had found the cavern went deeper. A lot deeper. In fact it was over 3x times as deep as the shaft to reach the cavern. There was magma down there. Even though it would be useless against the undead hoard it still may have some use for us. Though it will not be finished any time soon I immediately ordered a new shaft dug.

28th Opal:
In the past two weeks Penguinizer has turned out five masterful somethings. I'm not entirely sure what he actually made nor am I even sure what he was been doing since I took over as overseer. A working dorf is a productive dorf I suppose so I shall not linger on it.

11th Obsidian:
Two forgotten beasts in one year, aren't I special. Litheme, a towering quadruped of ice and has three long straight tails. It proceed to get lost in the caverns and be of no use to anyone.

16th Obsidian:
More goblins. Of course. Heaven forbid we stop swelling the ranks of the undead hoard.

28th Obsidian:
I now see why every overseer before me has only stayed for one year. Though nothing terrible has happened during my rule we are now plagued with an infestation of ghosts and the undead hoard does not diminish. I will take my leave in hopes that someone with a plan for combating the undead may take my place so that we may set foot outside once more.

1st Granite, 258, Early Spring
Whelp, I’ve been dead for a while now, so obviously that makes me a candidate to run the fort. I know nothing, or I think I know nothing, about leading these people, so just raises my candidacy for leader even higher. After floating around for a while, I remember some of what’s here so let’s get busy. Everyone seems to be doing a good job at the moment, so there should be time to figure out what I can do before they start asking me questions and getting all disturbed by my transparent appearance.

5th Granite
Besmarkelreth has created a masterpiece. After a bit of searching and thinking, I find that this is Penguinizer. I also find that he’s done this many times before. Blackfox also ran out of things to do; I told her to go on stone working duty. I found I can’t speak very well either as this meant “take a break” somehow.

16th Granite
A goblin snatcher appears; I worry for a couple moments before I remember that they always show up on the surface. The zombie ‘friends’ make quick work of him.

24th Granite
That forgotten beast Litheme seems to have died 3 days ago. It really was a useless thing.

2nd Slate, 258, Mid-Spring
I remembered that it’s not enough just to have carved memorials lying around, they need to be set up somewhere! I shall combine the dig for memorial areas with the idea that has been growing in my head to solve the zombie problem. I call it, Digging for clowns. Though, I don’t know why clowns could possibly rid us of the zombie problem.

10th Slate
The dwarves refuse to install the memorials in the location I have stated. Maybe I’m forgetting something about where they need to be place? I’ll have a need location dug for them soon.

7th Felsite, 258, Late-Spring
Finally! The dwarves listen to reason and start installing the memorials. The first ghost has been put to rest. Maybe I can get my own rest soon.

8th Felsite
It was too good to be true. Almost half the workforce has decided that now is the time for a break.

12th Felsite
Phase, despite being an enormous idiot who killed me, has graciously installed more memorials.

7th Hematite, 258, Early Summer
We have memorialized 8 ghosts so far. Hopefully moral will improve soon as a result.

9th Hematite
A Kobold thief has been tricked into coming to attack our fort and is quickly devoured. That necromancer is doing pretty well at spreading the word from his riverbed.

11th Hematite
I have discovered that someone had really loved statue making. And I mean REALLY. I have set most of these statues to be afixed in a mostly empty hall. I shall call it “The Statue Lover’s Hall”, if only to myself.

14th Hematite
The digging is going too slow. Damn that phase for kill that other miner and me off. I’, going to have a pair of pickaxes made, one of which can be his. It’s not like detailing floors is that useful anyway.

21st Hematite
RPharazon starting throwing a tantrum. I can’t remember enough to know if this is because of failing to make the pickaxes or just because of the ghosts that have disappeared...

22nd Hematite
Thankfully RP has calmed down before anything bad happened.

6th Malachite, 258, Mid-summer
I and my non-existent brain seem to have lost it. I discovered that over the past few days I have queued up memorials for most everything I thought of and enough slabs to cover the needs there. In addition, those statues still haven’t been completely installed yet. And here I had just been thinking that I’d nearly finished everything besides the search for clowns.

22nd Malachite
RPharazon has gone mad. How lovely. I shall probably follow soon enough. Also, I found that a worthless bowyer’s workshop was holding up all of the orders to install statues and other things. Damn that Phase for causing me to have this form and losing most of my mind!

18th Galena, 258, Late Summer
The dead walk, for the umpteenth time. Ho hum.

1st Limestone, 258, Early Autumn
Autumn has come, and with the cold comes death. I don’t expect the fort to last much longer.

9th Limestone
My fellow miner Volatar has finally gotten his well deserved rest.

11th Limestone
RPharazon has finally died of thirst. May she rest in piece and not rise to kill us.

9th Sandstone, 258, Mid-Autumn
After a good bit of panicking over RP’s body possibly rising from the grave, and then possibly spreading miasma around, I’m reasonably sure that her body has been entombed properly. But only reasonably sure.

10th Timber, 258, Late Autumn
I have remembered that there are trees somehow growing in this large open area to the upper north of our fort. Time to get more wood!

23rd Timber
Phase has struck prase. What the heck is prase? It looks like a.... flat rock. Maybe a gem of some kind?

14th Moonstone, 258, Early Winter
My memorial has finally been installed. I can feel myself fading from this realm already...

17th Opal, 258, Mid Winter
Just as I’m nearly gone, Eshtan Zulbandkon made himself known again that he wants to come with. I shall stick around long enough to make sure he gets his rest too.

15th Obsidian, 258, Late Winter
Eshtan has been put to rest. I will go soon as well, but first I feel that I’ve earned some amusement. I think I shall watch this pair of ambushes while I drift away....

16th Obsidian
As if the gods are pleased with my work, 4 more ambushes appear. The new invaders actually manage to destroy some of the zombies as well.

18th Obsidian
This is a wonderful send off. Two more ambushes for my enjoyment. A good number of them have bows and are picking away at some zombies from the far side of the river.

21st Obsidian
A group of six goblin bowmen seem to be doing very well. They have, however, found themselves at the bottom of the riverbed which, in my opinion, is not the best place to be.

22nd Obsidian
A thief was reported to have stolen an enormous iron corkscrew. When I floated over to the location, I found myself outside surrounded by zombies. Are the zombies learning to psychically take things? Or was it a leftover from when our fort was still new?

1st Granite, 259, Early Spring
And so... I rest..... I never........ did find........... those............. clowns....................

(Save is here (http://www.mediafire.com/?091j8ogez3vcmc4). As I was killed off by Phase, I figured that I may as well combine my "ghosthood" with my lack of knowledge about the game and have memory loss included)

I'm starting to suspect that the necromancer might be the good guy here. Just look at all those goblins and forgotten beasts he's killed! Really, you're the ones who decided to build a fort in his backyard.
