Your Kill-Team has been quite recently assembled at Watch Station Iobel, in the Acheros Salient, by the express command of Watch Commander Mordigael, leader of the Deathwatch in the Jericho Reach.

Your commander is yet another Librarian, Epistolary Axineton of the White Consuls. He is a grim individual, never offering praise, and often giving very harsh criticisms of his subordinates. However, you know him to be very respected for his knowledge.

He has gathered you in the Watch Station's Command Centre for your first briefing as a part of this experimental Kill-Team.

Cherubim flutter high above you, and various holo-displays show the Reach, as well as an individual planet in great detail. Interestingly, there are no serfs in the room, only a pair of servitors. Perhaps the Epistolary did not want anyone listening?

"Battle-Brothers; we have picked up on Astropathic communication from an Astropathic servant of a Navigator by the name of Penemue Grigoris.

She claims that something terrible is occurring on Vespasia. As you may know, Vespasia is a planet claimed by the Ruinous Powers, loyal citizens of the Imperium enslaved by mutants and servants of the Dark Gods.

However, she has informed us of the presence of the Traitor Legions, who attempt to be looking for something in the planet's ancient xenos ruins.

We have received very little in the way of communication, however. It appears to have stopped.

You will be given a carte-blanche to complete this mission as you see fit, and may assign your own objectives, due to its mysterious nature. You will receive little support from ourselves in the Deathwatch, or from the Crusade as a whole, due to the operation being so far behind enemy lines."

Primary Objective 1: Find out what the Traitors are looking for, and take it/destroy it for the Deathwatch.

Secondary Objective 1: Find Penemue Grigoris.

You may add more objectives as the mission progresses, or may do so right now: The briefing and planning process is likely to be very important.

The entire squad will be wearing Psychic Hoods as standard issue, and will receive 60 Requisition each.

Maximus looks at the holo-display carefully before framing an answer in a peculiar sing song voice. "How do you propose we make planetary insertion? By Imperial Naval ship or strike craft?"

Looking at the pictures of the planet his eyes narrow at the vast selection of unpleseant and dark heretics filling the rows of known dangers. "Have we the bio file for the navigator Brother Axineton?

The Iron Hand stands ramrod-straight, his psychic hood already bolted and connected in place around his helmet seal and gorget.

Yet his helm is off, showing a swarthy yet somewhat ashen face criss-crossed with scars, adorned with a neatly-trimmed black beard. A single service stud adorns his forehead, and augmetics shine at his neck and glow from within his eyes. Looking down, the bionic replacement grows more obvious: both hands, one arm, and one leg glint mechanically beneath power armor bolted into hardpoints attached to the replacement limbs. Despite the heavy biological augmentation, there are only small deviations from standard Deathwatch heraldry on his armor: the silvered right pauldron capped with a horned skull; the open book set behind the aquila of his breastplate; the triple-bolt insignia of his Clan Company upon one knee plate. Codicier markings adorn the fragments of a slightly-rusted tabard woven from thin iron wires.

"Who is this Navigator-mutant and why is it here? And how does it know? Suspicious. So we are to be hunkng traitors across filthy xenos ruins spread across a continent? Terrain permitting, I suggest we mechanize," he says without a hint of irony. "Bikes or a land speeder, to cover ground more quickly. Inserted by drop pod to maximize catching the foul traitors by surprise. And prevent them from opposing our landing. Or a Thuderhawk could insert us and any steeds, including possibly a Rhino."

Mechanics give a soft yet audible whir as he leans closer to the holo, inspecting terrain and environmental readouts.

Even before you factored in the armour Castiel was far from the most imposing individual in the room, standing almost half a foot shorter than the other marines. This was accentuated by the fact he was presently only wearing the mottled grey body suit without the heavier components of the armour. This wasn’t helped by the fact that Castiel was standing back from those crowding round the holographic display.

He had no idea of his relative standing in the group, his unorthodox combat experience didn’t translate directly to marine ranks, and he was pretty sure he had forgotten the etiquette required for such briefings, still his battle brothers were making suggestions and so would he.

“I share your apprehension that this could indeed be a trap, however even considering such I believe we must still proceed. On a more practical note with all due respect, I wonder if we need to deviate further from expected operating procedures in order to be successful in this mission.” He really wanted to use the term codex, but considering the company that would not be diplomatic, and he was pretty sure his point would be contentious enough. However, he had been assigned here for a reason. “You are suggesting tactics which are suited to a conventional warzone, or at least a planet which is soon to become one. The presence of an obviously imperial craft in the system is going to immediately hand our enemy the initiative, not to mention the great risks involved in taking one of the emperors vessels so far into enemy space.

“I would first seek to exhaust other options before attempting such. Few planets are entirely self sufficient; I would suggest trying to secure support from outside the Deathwatch, for example a Rogue trader. As difficult as it might be for some of you to believe, there is certainly, at least, one Rogue Trader who has been to Vespasia. A transport and a few marines would make no dent in the cargo capacity of such a vessel and any Rogue Trader with Vespasia on their route will know how to smuggle cargo past port authorities. Such an approach could mean that we have achieved landing, if not reached the ruins themselves before the enemy are aware of our presence. Not only would such retain the element of surprise but also sends a clear message that the Astartes can appear with no warning, where ever the Emperor wills it.”

"Iron Hands do not slink into an advantageous position, Brother. They advance, unrelenting, weathering the strongest beams and bullets the wretched foe can bring to bear, and then choke them on their own fear." Words spoken harshly but not necessarily unkindly. The unkindness follows quickly. "You sound like a Raven Guard, Son of Sanguinius: all guile and wit and shadow. And no core or conviction beneath it."

The Iron Hand closes his eyes, mulling even as the mechanical glow persists through his eyelids. "Rogue Traders are the worst of heretics in deed if not word: they profit greatly from their heresy and thus have every reason to preserve it. Any Rogue Trader welcome at Vespasia could be nothing other than a servant of the Ruinous Powers, even if he does not admit such to himself. And you seem to assume there is but one set of xenos ruins."

The massive, grizzled half-android loudly stomps over towards Castiel, towering over him. "However in absence of full fleet support or simply conducting Exterminatus...your cowardly idea has...an iota of merit."

Castiel didn't move as the Iron Hand advanced towards him, backing down at this point would do more harm than good, so he remained stationary till he could have reached out and touched the broad power armoured chest. His eyes met the other marines gaze as best he could approximate though the helmet, his gaze was confident and steady. For a moment he thought about defending his own honour, and that of his chapter, he wasn't sure if it was the expected thing to do. Still he would no doubt loose in a debate on honour, not to mention that personally being compared to the Raven Guard hardly seemed much of a slight.

"If they were considering the ultimate sanction we would not be here, and most likely would never have heard the name of Vespasia spoken in our lives. As for deployment of full fleet support, I think we all know that there is no shortage of worthy engagements for such. Were I confident we could make such a request, it would still not be my first resort as any forces we risk on this excursion weaken another front." He paused for a moment, more for effect than anything. "Besides who would you rather risk? the worst of heretics, the lives of those loyal men that serve in the Imperial Navy, or the precious resources of the chapters?"

"Hrmp," the Iron Hand grumbles, looking at Castiel's attire. As he turns back to the tactical map, Castiel is half-certain he sees a tiny crease of a smile on the larger marine's lips.

"So, you have communications with such an expendable heretic? If we are not going to roll across this world in Land Raiders, certainly your particular brand of instilling fear is worth further analysis."

The Black Consul looks at is brothers sensing the tension in the room. "Calm now brothers. We each have our own gifts. from the stoic son of Magnus to the bold Son of Sanguinus. We must all work together to solve this problem and crush the heretic and the Traitor."

Lookig back at the map and the location he void he nods at the RT idea. "An independant ships owuld be a fine plan. If they prove to be of a heretical nature they can always suffer the fate they deserve- once we are delivered to our location." The offer of blowing up a ship of heretics a sop to the Iron Hand's more implacable nature.

The choice of stoic and bold seemed slightly inappropriate, considering what their slight disagreement had been about. The Raven Guard insult had seemed far more honest as a comparison, still he would let the point slide he wasn’t going to increase strife in the team without good reason

“I don’t personally know a suitable candidate; however some of my former associates would be able to assist in finding such. The alliance between the Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch has always been close, and asking for advice on suitable rogue traders is hardly going to strain the relationship.”

“I am more than aware that all we all have different talents to offer, for our brother is correct it that we will almost certainly require some variety of ground transport to complete the mission. Which, without the wisdom of one of Manus’ own chapter just wouldn’t be feasible.” He thought he was mostly successful in keeping the irritation out of his voice, but it showed on the opening lines.

Axineton's face is one of disdain. It's always one of disdain. He lets Kill-Team Aether debate one another, before butting in.

"Castiel is correct, brothers."
When he says brothers, it is as if he means 'children'.

He continues,

"This is not a mission of conquest, unfortunately. It is primarily an intelligence gathering mission regarding the operations of the Traitor Legions in the area, with regards to Xenos lore or technology. Should it be required, it is also a sabotage mission.

Insertion is possible in several ways. We have several light destroyers that could slip in and drop you in without being noticed. Extraction, however, may prove more difficult.

Getting in with a Rogue Trader may prove difficult, but it isn't a technically bad plan. I know of no Rogue Traders with the right to trade with worshippers of the Enemy, but I do know of families with Warrants that allow them access to this region of space. One of them has... or had... Penemue Grigoris on board.

Anyway, don't expect any tanks being assigned to your mission. They tend to be loud and visible, unless anyone has access to some very convincing camouflaged paint."

This is the most any of you have ever heard Epistolary Axineton talk, and he looks damned impatient with the fact that he has to liaise with you.

Just behind the main gathering of Astartes looms a silent giant. Craggy of feature and wild of hair. Across his broad, power armored shoulders is a rich white pelt of a huge Fenris Wolf. Adding to his savage appearance is a collection of fangs, ork ears, twisted shrapnel and other totems. A staff made seemingly of stone and encrusted with copper runes.

Ulfric has been listening intently to the briefing. Idly he strokes his long brown beard. Occasionally he nods to himself, yellow eyes appraising his fellow brothers.

"So then Watch-Commander," he rumbles in his harshly accented voice, "Let me understand this. We have to investigate a barely known threat which is pursuing an unknown goal."
He raises his thumb and index finger.
"Our allies are tight lipped and seemingly in the dark as much as we are," his middle finger joins the others, "Armored support is a liability."
His final finger was added, "Not to mention we have to scrape up unreliable transport to even get there in the first place."

"It does seem rather impossible does it not?"

Ulfric tips his head back and roars with booming laughter.
"A good thing you have assembled such wisdom. Impossible is what we do. We shall find our legend."

"Then by all means," Rostam says slowly, blinking, one hand faintly rubbing the helm at his hip. "Keep in mind that the iron steeds available to us depend heavily on our mode of insertion. If we are to insert covertly in some Rogue Trader's heavy lifter, then standard bikes or assault bikes would be the best choices, terrain permitting. Land Speeders are...finicky, even more lightly armed than assault bikes, but faster and do not rely on reliable ground traction."

As the Epistolary speaks, Rostram does not flinch, only frowns. "I was not thinking of putting down in a Rhino, Epistolary. But bikes? Ho, Epistolary, which Warrant brought that Navigation-mutant to that hellscape? Perhaps they want it back...or perhaps it escaped when they turned to fell dealings." Rostram suggests with an air of exasperation, turning back towards the datascreen with a grunt and loud, aggressive keystrokes. "Toxins and thunder, do we have any topographical or environmental data on this accursed world of heretic overlords and weakling slaves?"

He steps back to the panel to ponder the data, accessing the terminal and querying the cogitator with the confident taps of one experienced in the technical mysteries.

Grunting as he realizes most of the cogitator data on this station deals with maps--not entirely useless, but not entirely helpful either, he turns back to the Black Consul. "Perhaps your heretic Trader friends might take us in a vessel with a proper Librarium to consult on our journey."

He shakes his head. "Regardless, someone should take the portents of the Tarot. And then we must act will all proper haste to cleanse these heretics before they seize whatever exactly they are looking for. Castiel decided to stay out of the discussion on vehicles he was already trying to work out whether the world had any suitable vehicles that they could attempt to expropriate. For all of Axinetons comments on how stealthy tanks were, Castiel wasn't that confident about his fellows either. He doubted he could convince the entire force to wear scout armour and power armour wasn't designed for stealth. If they had to travell a long distance by foot they would almost certainly be spotted at some point, better to find a cargo transport and use that, at least then they were less likely to be spotted.

"Would it be possible to have the name of the Rogue Trader who was connected to Penemue Grigoris? Castiel asked, looking up from his study of the maps although he had hesitated before asking, still it was a sensible question and since their superior clearly knew it would be a waste of valuable time to research it.

Still he agreed with the Iron Hands assessment, on requiring a Tarot reading so Castiel carefully withdrew a package from an interior pocket of the bodysuit. Slowly with a practised and almost ritual grace he unwound the silken cord and unwrapped the deep red fabric, engraved with wards of protection. Still holding the cards with one hand he carefully spread the fabric, smoothing away any creases. Then he turned his attention to the tarot, the card of the Inquisitor was at the top, but it no longer showed an image of Balinor instead the holo-card showed just a shadow. Still as curious as the image was it wasn't what he had removed the cards to find, he emptied his mind of distractions focusing just on the cards and the steady movement of shuffling them, then he refreshed the thought exercises that guarded his mind, finally he began to lay out the cards in the 'sword' spread.

Axineton nods, and answers Castiel's question succinctly.

"Penemue Grigoris appears to have hired a Rogue Trader herself, in fact. It was done in the utmost secrecy, so we do not know which individual it may be. We can, however, give a list of Warrants with the right to operate in the region."
He promptly hands Castiel a datapad, with several names. It is quite obvious that he doesn't want to elaborate on why Penemue Grigoris is behind enemy lines.

The Carsomyr Warrant
The Kaiser Warrant
The Lan Warrant
The Merovech Warrant

"These are the most likely Rogue Trader dynasties to have been hired by our Navigator contact, the Lan family excepted, as they are currently accounted for, and may, due to honour debts, be able to provide your insertion."

After this, Castiel consults the Tarot. The cards seem to want to be placed in certain positions. Once, Castiel knows that he must invert a card (or perhaps right it?) as he deals them into 'the Sword.'

The first card revealed is the Astropath, inverted. A sign of witchcraft, perhaps, an enemy psyker of power. The second card is the Hourglass, representing time, or something ancient...

And with them, a vision.

A large figure in gaudily coloured power armour. Profane imagery marks its surface. He wields a twisted staff, the weapon of a sorcerer. The name 'Atum Sum' rings in your ears, although you have heard no sound.
Next is the Guardsman, indicating possibly large numbers of enemy soldiers. It is accompanied by the Heirophant, inverted...

A profane priest, garbed in once-holy power armour, a Crozius Arcanum, gripped in his fist, the holy skull replaced with an eight pointed star.

'Word Bearers'.
The visions were not looking fortuitous. Next, unsurprisingly was the Navigator, inverted.

A vision of a blinded Navigator, his third eye brutally removed, greets you. Behind him stands another horribly mutated Navigator, lacking his two normal eyes, massive talons on his figures, appearing to cackle manically. The name 'Kokabiel Grigoris' haunts your mind as the vision loses focus, revealing the next card.
The next card is the Rogue Trader, and the vision comes back into focus...

A man kneels at the feet of the clawed Navigator, then the vision abruptly changes, showing the text of an Inquisitorial edict, the Excommunication of 'House Der'cel'.
Next was the High Lord, a card associated with rank and nobility, paired with the Khan, inverted. The Khan was often associated with noble savagery, but inverted...

The ruling classes of Vespasia were visible. They held whips in their hands, punishing the virtuous, demanding servitude from loyal servants of the Emperor. And, in this obviously abstracted vision, behind these mutant rulers were others with yet more whips, perhaps a higher order of mutant nobility.

'Witches and mutants' was the obvious reading.
And now, the Tech Priest was drawn. And the Xenos, a strange card, usually depicting a (small and weak) Ork, as they were well known by Imperial artists. However, when the final cards, the Librarium, and the Gambit were revealed, the visions became blurry and confused.

Ancient structures of marble. Lithe figures, apparently human, walking amongst them. No, they were too lithe, too... disgustingly elegant. With but a blink, millenia passed. The structures are now ruined, the figures gone, replaced with slinking shadows, searching the crumbled remains of a civilisation long gone.

They were looking for something, something powerful, and something dangerous.

'Ancient Knowledge' seemed to be the danger warned of as the vision ended...

But, it also came with a nagging feeling of 'opportunity', with the Gambit card shown righted, showing a boarding torpedo penetrating what appeared to be a giant Xeno lifeform.

So, Castiel had revealed six potential dangers. One 'Atum Sum', the Word Bears, Kokabiel Grigoris, House Der'cel, the Witch-Lords of Vespasia and the dangers of ancient mysteries...

...and as he did so, the others started to feel a gnawing pessimism regarding the mission. Something wasn't right, they were going in knowing too little...

Lore Checks for Zarathustra

Vespasia has not yet been attacked for the Crusade. However it has been said that the Ecclesiarchy has agents on the planet, attempting to incite rebellion amongst its slave-class. This may prove problematic, since they have not yet pledged their allegiance to the Imperium.

Taking the planet would require more intelligence, but would likely involve pressuring the numerically superior underclass to rebel, and supporting this rebellion by taking out key enemy installations, which are entrenched to a fair degree. With the planet being an Agri-World, any form of armoured vehicle would be of use in conventional warfare.

Being a planet ruled by mutants, it only stands to reason that its kings are the most powerful mutants there: Its psykers.

The Xenos ruins are ancient, pre-dating human settlement. Very little other information has been gathered.

You also know that Penemue Grigoris is a Navigator of House Grigoris, who have fallen in the eyes of those on high. An important member, Kokabiel Grigoris, betrayed the Imperium. Penemue is one of a few Navigators of the House still not accounted for, rumours saying that she went looking for her cousin, to bring him back to the Emperor's Light, or to destroy him.

Lore Checks for Castiel

Castiel is able, with the limited mapping available, to plan several routes, taking advantage of the local flora, to the ruins. However, he would need to have better information, or first-hand experience to do better.

He is also able to determine where the enemy would place their Augur Towers and similar, working out several locations that would be most conducive to a stealthy insertion near the ruins. On thinking on his visions however, he reasons that they may also have psykers attempting to find intruders, and that, Kill-Team Aether being powerful psykers, they may be able to be spotted by such.

He looked up at Axineton “I assume I can speak openly to my brothers about the threats we face, but that not a word of this is to be uttered to anyone outside this room?” He inquired, he was used to secrecy but was not certain how the Death watch

After hearing Axineton’s sensible precautions he turned to his other brothers and began to speak and as he started to talk of the future his voice seemed to shift, becoming darker with a threatening tone to it, the room seemed to darken and there was a feeling of dread that even the psychic shielding did not fully avert.

“We are opposed by one of the worst traitors, one of the Astartes turned to the dark arts of sorcery. I will not speak his name, for those have power and his deserves to be destroyed as utterly as he does. Still his armour will likely identify him from any other traitors we face, it is far more brightly coloured than that of the Word bearers who the cards portray are the majority of our treacherous kin on that world. Either way the world has powerful psykers and so I would suggest extreme a psychic blackout once we enter the system for as long as we can achieve. Any long range communication should be by vox, and even then limited as much as possible, and if we seek the emperors guidance again we will do it before we enter the system. While I have no doubt you all have mental defences up, you should pay particular care to them as we approach Vespasia.” He was trying to avoid sounding patronising, he assumed his fellow marines were capable of working out most of that themselves but it was better to say redundant comments occasionally.

“The world is ruled by a twisted ‘nobility’ of mutants, they are ordered in an twisted inversion of the imperial structure. The mutants seem to rule by force, were it needed to instigate a rebellion even on a local scale it should not be too difficult, the hate seems there. Provide them with inspiration and weapons and they will surely battle for their salvation. Even if it is not yet time for such action, we may require a distraction or to engage the enemy on multiple fronts for the mission to succeed.”
“Once again the wisdom of a suspicious mind is revealed, there is a Rouge Trader whose path may intersect with ours. I have seen the warrant of excommunication by Inquisitorial edict, which alone would provide enough before the rest of the vision.
I cannot say for sure that the leaders of the house are on the planet, however I saw a Navigator affiliated with that house, I believe given over to the ruinous powers. This is the shame of House Grigoris and I believe the true reason behind our informant’s presence on the world. I also saw Penemue Grigoris, and while the mission he seems to have set out on was debatable I believe he is still loyal. He has, or will suffer greatly in opposition to his twisted kin, but I saw no evidence of heresy or betrayal on his part, if this is a trap it has been extremely well constructed.

The cards whispered hints to the knowledge that lies in the ruins, but the meaning was unclear and I will not speculate. However it was certain that there is some great secret buried on Vespasia and like all such Xenos knowledge it is dangerous. Still I have seen the ruins we are looking for, even if there are multiple Xenos sites on the world we need not waste time investigating them all” With that he finished his portents and the sense of doom finally finished fading from the room.

"Grigoris, Grigoris...where do I know that name...?" Rostam muses, then his face contorts and a mechanical hand slams with rage onto a console hardened against the strength brought to bear by a furious Astartes.

"Of course! The most putrid of mutants, they are! That House long since turned to the arts most foul to improve their station in the Imperium. Hereticus Abominii! Excommunicate Diabolis! Kokabiel Grigoris, turned by the Warp into a monstrous traitor thirsty for the blood of men! And Penemue," he scoffs, scorn thick in his voice. "Saved from the purges by her own prescience, I wager, though her death warrant is signed perhaps by special edict she still stalks the stars to eradicate Kokabiel. Perhaps loyal enough, hateful enough to keep in the Emperor's service to destroy her wretched treasonous family, if a mutant can ever be held as anything but a rabid, festering tumor upon the weak flesh Man is bound to. That one, that Penemue, will have come looking for Kokabiel the Foul, to turn his black heart back to Him-on-Terra or execute him!

"If Penemue is on Vespasian, then Kokabiel either is or was there. Tracking with sorcerers and broken Warrants does not surprise me in the least. The Twist-World is veritably ruled by unbound psykers and fell sorcerers, the worst that heresy and mutation can offer. But that creates certain benefits to is. The Crusade has not penetrated there but the Ministorum has. And thus I know of an easy way for us to raise allies on Vespasian, my brothers, should we need them to die for their Emperor."

Staring back at the void maps of the of the region he looks back to their briefing officer. "Rather than a RT ship could you offer a strike cruiser outfitted with the drop pods and attack bikes? Speed, stealth and agility will allow us to move and hunt for our prey."

"A strike cruiser could provide insertion, yes. Extraction, however, would be much more difficult. The Rogue Trader, Diaz Lan, could furnish you with both. He owes us a debt, after all.

However, regarding stealth and speed, you may be correct. A Strike Cruiser, dropping two drop pods, one with yourselves, another with equipment such as bikes, would be possible, assuming that the Strike Cruiser does not attract attention en route, which is very likely considering that a heretic Navigator may be a terrible threat."

"It's a slower and more risky but I would be tempted to suggest travelling purely at night, or at least in low light levels. With the increased senses provided by power armour we should be able to do without headlights. This will make it far harder for any orbital surveillance system to detect or track us, as well as reducing the chances of us being sighted, and the sound of engines alone are less likely to raise the alarm.

I acknowledge that it's probably pushing training some of our brethren myself included haven't used recently. However considering it is an agriworld, the risk doesn't seem to great."

As to deployment, an assault bike carrying two with a heavy weapon, and standard bikes for the rest, for mobility. And the noise of bike engines is not so strange on an Agri-World. Properly inserted, the enemy will not even know we are there until their cities lie in ruin, their leadership bleeds their putrid blood into the carpets of their damned halls, and our ship jumps out of the system."

Axineton nods once at the descendant of Roboute Guilliman.

"That shall be no problem, Brother."
He looks somewhat relieved, glad that he can get this 'command' charade over with. He looks at the Kill-Team with a raised eyebrow, as if expecting a litany of inane questions, before opening up a console with an elaborate key, which should allow the Kill-Team to command the Watch-Station's servitors to fetch their requisitioned equipment.

He then leaves the chamber, grumbling wordlessly.

Castiel bowed his head as Maximus spoke. He carried but a single one of his weapons, his force sword, still sheathed was in his hands. It was an unusual design, in a style known as a Katzbalger, with s shaped guard. The only other weapon visible was the Sniper Rifle protruding from the camo cloak.

He was now entirely clad in his armour, he was wearing scout armour, if any asked it was because he believed the extra stealth capacities would be useful for the mission. In reality he was just accustomed to this armour, it had served him well for years. Whoever had originally fashioned the armour had been lost to history, it was very similar to the deathwatch design but there were differences: clever design elements that reduced the weight, it incorporated a rebreather, as well as better autosenses and on the interior of the armour were wards inlaid with silver. Not to mention it was designed to allow the incorporation of a psychic hood, which was unusual in itself. He knew it had been over 50 years since the armour was last worn, probably because few librarians wore scout armour, and the armour was clearly designed for a psyker, although he had heard rumours that it had been worn by an Inquisitor at some stage. The armour carried no symbol of the chapter, the large blood pendant that hung around his neck now hidden by the armours chest plate which born the symbol of the deathwatch, in a lighter grey, even the heraldry designed to complement the stealth pattern.

"Knowledge is power, and like any power it corrupts, worst of all knowledge is that of the warp, and the related knowledge of psychic arts. To be ignorant is a virtue, for the ignorant mind is free from the temptations the threat of heresies that knowledge brings.

Yet knowledge is still power, and that power cannot fall into the hands of our enemies. So for the Imperium to prosper this knowledge must be sought out. So we are caught between what is necessary and what is virtuous, yet we are his finest warriors. We learn what is forbidden, so we loose our ignorance, our innocence. We do so for him on earth, and for such we are blessed, but even as his chosen we walk a dangerous path. Knowledge is power, but never let it gain power over you.

I Castiel, swear the Apocryphan Oath."

Standing to the side of the group, was a Marine who had not spoken as of yet. Had almost seemed to barely move truly. Like his Brothers he was a massive mountain of flesh, made even larger by the armour he wore. Had he not been wearing his armour, long thick cords of scarred tissue would be noticeable along his arms....scars that match the two lines across his face. The armour he wears however covers these, an armour of ancient design beautifully maintained.

Until now, Pyriel has been silent. Such was his way, and the way of his world. He had listened to the various points and counterpoints, but felt that what had needed said was already covered by his Brothers...so he waited. Now, the time for waiting was over.

Stepping forward, he hefts his great hammer to his shoulder. "Our sword is forged in the fires of Knowledge, but our Will is what tempers it and makes it strong. Let us take up arms now, and gird ourselves in Righteousness. Where we are going knowledge is used not as not a sword, but a worm...slithering in to your soul to corrupt it from within. The world is infested....let us cleanse it, and cauterize this would with Holy Fire. I, Pyriel Ancalagon, swear the Apocryphan Oath."

It is blatantly obvious to the majority of the Kill-Team that Axineton intended for them to take the Rogue Trader route, and offered them some illusion of choice on the matter. He was known to be the sort that had little time for foolishness, so it's somewhat surprising that he bothered.

Regardless, in two Terran standard days' time, the Rogue Trader's vessel arrives.

You are invited aboard his ship, and are led by elegantly dressed servants to the Captain's personal quarters.

His quarters are lavish, to say the least. They are filled with trophies from various campaigns, alien skulls and other such treasures. The man himself is reclined in an oaken seat, drinking a steaming drink, being careful not to stain his waxed moustache.

"Good evening, Lords Astartes. I am led to believe that you require assistance; insertion into enemy territory?

He remains quiet, looking about the room for anything truly heretical and damning, knowing the Warrant of Trade allows for a large degree of latitude beyond that allowed of the typical Imperial citizen. And truly, he is curious about the xenos remains.

"As you well know,"
He says slowly, carefully measuring his tone so as not to show irritation,

"The Emperor himself did not command me to come here. I am honoured with a bond of mutual assistance to the Deathwatch of the Jericho Reach.

You need my help, which I am more than happy to provide."
He pauses,

"However, my assistance in the region surrounding the Hadex Anomaly means that I cannot be elsewhere, assisting the Crusade in other ways.

I would hope that ye, most esteemed Adeptus Astartes, would be able to convince me that my own efforts in this Front will be promoted."

Common Lore: War <Success>

His trophies of Tyranid heads, Tau helms and other such things come from all across the Jericho Reach, and perhaps beyond. He's a Rogue Trader, he could have bought them, but also could have taken them.

Common Lore: War <Two degrees of success>

The Lan Dynasty have been operating across all three Salients, fighting Xenos and trading with the locals. A reputation for strategical aptitude has attached itself to Diaz Lan.

Forbidden Lore: Xenos <Success>

The Xenos remains? Fantastic. He has slain, or purchased the remains of, many different monsters. Several Tyranid Warrior skulls are present. The Tau Crisis Suit helms are impressive. Several unknown aliens are present, too, implying that he has seen areas that you have never even read of.

Forbidden Lore: Xenos <One degree of Success>

He sure seems interested in Xenos technology. Still, they are trophies, right? He's not wearing anything xeno-related, that's for sure, the leather of his coat excepted (wearing dead xeno-beast skin is considered the best of taste on some planets, after all.).

Pyriel stood silently, getting the measure of this man. Many of his Brothers were wary of Rogur Traders, and saw them as nothing but pirates. Pyriel saw them as simply dangerous. Somewhat like the Librarium itself. In the wrong hands both could lead to disaster, calamity, and Heresy. But those strong enough to wield the power given to them are able to forge something different altogether.

Watching his Brother Astartes, it is clear who is used to dealing with Peers of the Imperium, and who is used to the Halls of their Chapter. This was not the time for posturing or threats. Just as steel takes time to temper properly, so goes diplomatic negotiations...Of which this most definitely was. Besides, they would travel no faster, nor slowly, for hearing him out.

Stepping forward so as to attempt to draw the teader's notice, in a deep flowing voice Pyriel begins, "Lord Trader, we understand the risk you are taking with this insertion, even if it is an Honor Debt. Many would say that your kind is as essential to the Imperium's continued domination, as we Astartes are. So I find it of almost expected importance that we hear out your request, although I would caution that it remain a request as opposed to a demand. I came here to here a request from yourselves. My mere presence is no small thing. The fact that I have even spent time to come here shows the great reverence I show my honour debts to your organisation. Honour debts which have been more than fulfilled by my presence."
It is obvious that he is stating that he has already gone out of his way to come here.

"But you want plain speech, so you shall have it.

The Great Enemy thinks me less loyal than I am, so I have been able to organise several trading enterprises on your target planet. I need your help with this."
If any of the Astartes make any move to interrupt, he ignores them quite rudely and continues.

"I pose as a slave trader and facilitator amongst other things. Yes, they get some civilian tools and equipment from me; mostly farming vehicles... but...

I take their untrained youths, children and the rest, to a Schola Progenium elsewhere in the Reach. Freedom, of a sort."
He pauses, then answers the inevitable question,

"How do I pay for this?

Well, I sell slaves too. Some are xenos and renegade filth, yes, the most dangerous I can find, I might add. Others are not slaves at all: Agents of the Ecclesiarchy, and those same youths that I had raised elsewhere, who wish to visit the fury of the Emperor upon their former mutant overlords. These sleeper cells will activate in the future, to bring Vespasia into the Emperor's guiding light."

He sighs, showing some regret over his actions,

"I would ask you to kill them."
He sets his drink on the table next to him before explaining further,

"The psycho-conditioning, and other tricks, we've used so far has prevented them from learning who dropped off the agents, but this is unlikely to continue.

I've already lost one of my best agents, the rest are reluctant to act, lest the rebellion be crushed before it can gain traction."

Okay so they had managed to irritate probably one of the most loyal Rouge traders in the expanse, and offend someone who was obviously a great ally of the deathwatch. Perhaps they should of seen if they could have requested some sort of mediator or ambassador, when it came to the point where he felt he was the diplomatic one things were hardly running smoothly. Still he seemed to have recovered from the affront quite well.

“I apologise on behalf of myself and my brothers, for the obvious insult we have offered you. Also for underestimating your character quite drastic I know initiative is a well known quality of a Rouge Trader, but such a glorious plan still shocks me.

While we could not allow it to interfere with our primary objective, for should the servants of the great enemy succeed the omens for the future of the world are grim indeed. We do not have the liberties entrusted to your kind and must follow our orders to the letter.”
He paused for as if for thought, but more to give some effect “Although as I recall correctly, the letter was ‘carte-blanche to complete this mission as you see fit, and may assign your own objectives.’ While I can’t speak for the whole team, although I would not be surprised to find their opinions match my own, however it is clear to me that such would be beneficial to the Imperium. He could feel the anger slipping though his mental calm, this really was not the situation to loose himself in, still despite that he needed to say something before this débâcle continued

“Really brother, a few days ago you were only too keen to hit the enemies leadership, I seem to remember it was your proposal for a secondary objective. Our mission is of vital importance, and we would wish to achieve it as soon. However that does not mean while we are deployed on world we cannot do this as well, such does not endanger the mission and” He stopped mid sentence, his vision was blurring slightly he could see a red eye in the center of their sergeants armour. He jerked his head away from his team, and took a few deep ragged inhalations. He wouldn't let the past overwhelm him, he wouldn't let the curse win, he still had some control, he looked the Rouge Trader in the eye, the rage probably still evident in his face but to the mans credit he did not back down.

“Regardless of whether it is you who provides the insertion or not, if you provide us with the details you know of the witches, I will endeavour to see them slain. Even if it means I must remain on Vespasia after by 'brethern' have departed. I would be proud to continue the work you have began, and I am horrified that there are some that think differently. I know that, being almighty Space Marines, your missions are important, but is it truly more important than a task placed upon the shoulders of a Peer of the Imperium, one whose Warrant was validated by the High Lords themselves?

Why should I deviate from my divine mission? Why should I deviate from my mission? It is not 'convenient' for me."

Castiel was pacing, not wanting to venture too far from the room, but also trying to calm down, repeating the mantras he had learnt since a child. He would not let down his father he would not disgrace the seed of his chapter by allowing the rage of the primarch to cloud his mind. Still as he heard Maximus words he knew he wasn’t going to stand around and wait as such a noble man was bullied by the Black Consul. Still he would follow Rostam’s advice, squabbling openly was not becoming of the deathwatch.

**Stand your ground, I will speak to him, I would hope that you do not judge the Deathwatch, based on the actions of my brother. I fear his own hatred of that which we must face blinds him to what is right. Regardless of whether you transport us or not you have my oath that I will do everything in my power to slay these witches.** His voice still tinged with the edge of rage reverberated though the mind of the Rouge Trader

Then he again focused on their leader, and let his own talent carry his thoughts to the marine towering over the trader. ** I am sorry brother but from where I stand I see a human with the conviction not to back down from a space marine in his service to the Imperium. As for yourself you object to this endeavour based on time and risk, you needlessly threaten a loyal citizen, and one who has proved an ally of the Deathwatch before.

He has shown his initiative, he has gone beyond duty in his service to the Imperium, at the moment I can see no evidence you could make the same claim. Now he asks for the Deathwatch’s assistance in liberating a world from the grasp of the great enemy. The request makes tactical sense and for him to not stand his ground either means that progress on this world is lost, and the needless deaths of those loyal to the Imperium, or alternatively it means that more of the Imperium’s resources must be diverted to this place, at a later date.

For all you speak of the Deathwatch’s ‘wide-reaching gaze’ his intelligence on Vespasia is already clearly superior to our own. It requires no adjustment of our orders, we were explicitly given full discretion in our deployment to Vespasia as long as the primary objective was achieved. You speak like a mere guard officer at the moment, willing to do no more for the Imperium than what is ordered, what is demanded. It seems that the successors of the ultramarines have inherited all of the pedantry but none of the tactical acumen.

Notice how you are the only one rebuking him, even brother Rostam has fallen silent. For what is he asking of us, would benefit the war effort in the whole salient, a rebellion on Vespasia even if it were not successful would divert enemy forces from the crusade and disrupt their supply line, were it successful it would be a great victory for the Imperium and all involved. So Brother ask yourself do you stand against the Great enemy or do you just merely meekly follow orders? Do you truly serve terra or do you just follow the orders of your superiors? Pray on the flaws in your own character before you make false accusations of another, and weaken the relation between the Deathwatch and their allies.**

Rostam makes a dangerous low-pitched rumble through his external vox, the MIU clamping into the dataslate's access port, its bolt spinning into place as he accesses the data. After but a few moments it uncouples and retracts, and Rostram all but hits Maximus with the slate in passing it to him.

Over the vox comes a very irritated voice: +++The enemy witches so troubling our Warrantholder are being commanded by a traitor of the Seventeenth Legion. Possibly a Dark Apostle. The traitor's stronghold is not far from the ruins we are to seize - a mere six hundred klicks across farmland.+++

The former Consul stiffens slightly at the affront of the words being transmitted to his psyche by his companion. He doesn't shift or move a muscle as he casts out into the warp, a trickle of power flooding through his body allowing him to send back the message.

**I am a son of Guilliman, we fought above Calth, the spirits of the suit bled and died there. I am of the Black Consuls- we above all have reason to hate the false prophets of the Word Bearers. Do not question my faith or my reasoning.

You speak of a man of good standing who delays the missions of the Deathwtach for personal gain. A man who trades with the worst heretics of the Reach for profit under the guise of gathering intelligence. You speak of destablising a planet that is so far from Imperial lines we must rely on trader vessels welcome in their ports.

You trust a man desperate to kill the witches that rule this planet. and who will benefit? No ships, no fleets stand ready to fill the void or launch an attack on the planet. Only this trader who has used trade with these heretics to be in a position of trust and funded his Empire with trade with the forces of the great enemy.

If we would encounter these witches then we would destroy them as the deserve. If we would seek them out at cost to our mission then that is everything that we do not stand for. You seek glory and honour and a name. We are of the Deathwatch. We swore the Apocryphan Oath. We are of the shadow were no deed is spoken of, where no glory can be gained and where our mission is prosecuted above all.

Speaking once more in a more formal tone. "Trader Diaz. I ask you a final time. Will you serve the Imperium in transporting us to the worlds of the Great Enemy.

If Yes then we shall retire below, if No then we shall leave your vessel and find other means."

"You did not answer my question, noble lord.

What makes your mission more important than mine? What makes your mission, of which I know absolutely nothing, more important than the war with the Tyranids?

Logistics may not be glorious, Lord Astartes, but without shells and fuel, Leman Russ Main Battle Tanks fall silent.

I need a reason to divert, provide me a worthwhile reason, and I shall. I shall not let the guns fall quiet elsewhere without very good reason. So far, you have provided me with not even a hint at one."
Diaz Lan looks unimpressed.

"If you were anyone else but the Deathwatch, you would have been escorted out by now, sir.

You have all but accused me of heresy, you have behaved in a threatening manner, and you have seen fit to order me around like a serf.

I am willing to ignore such trespasses, due to the honour in which I hold your organisation. We have worked together in the past for mutual benefit, as I'm sure Epistolary Axineton will attest to.

I work in a system in which I need to have some knowledge of what I am doing. I am not anyone's ferryman, not even for the most illustrious of Adeptus Astartes. I am a Warrantholder, I have other exceedingly important duties and responsibilities that I must see to. Right now, I don't see what is important enough for me to abandon the duties placed upon me by the Crusade.

So, I'm afraid it comes to this:

Provide me a reason to assist, my lord, or provide your own means of insertion. I ask little. You make demands without offering even a reason why."

+++I will accept no order from Brothers who bicker like dogs over a bone. Maximus, the mission is time sensitive. Do you think the enemy shall wait the weeks or months it takes to arrange alternate transport? Do you think alternate transport has as close ties to this system as this Captain? Can enter its orbit with impunity? Can facilitate covert insertion and extraction? Not to mention berating an egotistical and powerful man as if he were a Guardsman.

+++Castiel, do you think any proud Astartes would see your position when you slander his name and wound his pride? Do you believe you can sway your brother by berating him like a serf? You are both weak and emotional flesh. And nothing more. Neither of you can become iron. Meditate on that for it is not a shaming drawn of personal insult, it speaks truth to your flaws exposed by a simple talk with a Rogue Trader.+++

That said behind the vox, he addresses the Rogue Trader. "We hunt," Rostam says evenly. "We hunt traitor-witches seeking some sort of xenos ruins. We will deny them whatever unspeakable contents the tombs might contain. Now it appears that the weak traitors of Fifteen and Seventeen have allied to further corrupt and plunder this world. I calculate that human logic has a 97.219% probability of noting the connections between our goals, Warrantholder. Your enemies with Xenostech could be as great a danger to your rebellion as the same with psychic interrogators. Our interests are aligned. Even if your rebels survive the Word Bearers' minions, they shall not survive Thousand Sons sorcerers. Faldric had been keeping out of the unseemly bickering, smirking at the stiff arrogance of his comrades. It would have been unwise to take sides in the conflict, even unintentionally. However an opening had appeared now with the Rogue Trader once again moving the bartering along.

"Lord Warrant-holder," he began in an even tone, "With all due respect others are attending to the war against the Tyranids. Your largess would have been most generous to the Imperium but hardly unique. That xenos threat is a known quantity."

He swept a giant arm towards the prow of the ship, "Our mission however is directed at a more elusive rot. Little is known about it currently and if we do not intervene the results may be as disastrous for the Imperium as the Hive-fleet invasion. It is great enough to warrant the attention of the Deathwatch after all."

He rose up proudly to his full height, face serious and solemn, "I ask you, would you want to live with the burden of guilt knowing that you once had the opportunity to cut out this blight before it festers? If the Tyranid fleet is a great enemy then this foe is a knife in the back. Which would you rather stop?"

The Rogue Trader doesn't even look at the Space Wolf as he stares, with some fear at Rostam Zarathustra. He does roll his eyes and shoot down the Rune Priest's attempt at convincing him quite quickly, though.

"I don't deal in unknowns. You don't even seem to know if your foe is more dangerous than the Tyranids, why should I think such? If you do nothing, nothing may happen.

As the Iron Hand expands on their missions Maximus is too slow to react. Near stunned into silence by the sheer folly of his brother. The nature of their missions being sealed to the Deathwatch and the Deathwatch alone. The secrecy essential for the very function of the "chapter".

Shooting the Iron Hand a direct glanec he broadcasts a reply forcefully. ** Hold your tounge Brother. You may have just given the purpose of our task away to this man. A man you described thus....

+++Keep our own knowledge close, Brothers. The eel need not know our goals nor our plans to accomplish them. Loyal he may be in truth but the dealings, quite distasteful, could shadow his soul to the Archenemy. We must take knowledge and bind it close with this one. Never give it back.+++

** EVen you have been fooled by the soft serpent tongue of the Trader. A trader who was 1 of the 4 that unleashed this rogue navigator into the system and had dealings with this traitorous house.**

Maximus surveys the rest of the squad somewhat annoyed now as he continues to speak telepathically. **This "trader" speaks of being known to the Enemy, of trading with the Enemy and placing agents within them. And the speaks of a simple decapitation to allow a planetry take over? A take over for whom? Himself? We have no forces available - that is the very reason we are here. Aboard a vessel steeped in the corruption that has the stench of slavery and corruption like a thick miasma within. Diaz Lan retrieves something from beneath his shirt, a jewel of some sort, on an iron chain. He hands it to Rostam, explaining somewhat.

"Should you come into contact with the Eldar, this may prove a valuable bargaining chip, should you need it. You could offer to return it to them, or threaten to destroy it, whatever you think may work to achieve what you need.

Regardless; it's something called a Spirit Stone. It apparently belonged to one of their powerful witches before she died. 'Tis an heirloom of my family, a trophy taken from one of their dead centuries past, set in this iron chain to show the mastery of humanity over the Xenos."
He looks at Rostam, his eyes dead-set.

"Use it as you see fit, it may prove advantageous to your mission... should it not prove as useful as I think, I would appreciate its safe return. I would not want it to fall into alien hands, without immense gain for the Imperium."
He then returns to the topic at hand.

"So, my lords Astartes, are we in agreement? I will assist you with your goals; namely covert insertion and extraction, and you shall assist me with mine; namely the slaying of the Witches on Vespasia?"

Finally being sure that he had regained his clam, and with the sounds of battle no longer ringing in his ears Castiel, re-entered the room. He moved silently as he spoke to their sergeant though the warp, his voice was calmer than before.

**He has to choose between delaying a mission of the Deathwatch, which he knew nothing about and delaying an armoured assault that he likely knows how vital it is. He is permitted to trade with the enemy as long as he does not go against Imperial interests. He has used this trade to seed the world with those faithful to the Imperium, it may seem distasteful to you but not all serve the Imperium in the same way.

I do not care for glory and honour brother, if I did I would not have chosen the path I have. No I care that we have an opportunity to strike a terrible blow against the forces of the ruinous powers, and save millions from its influence.**

As he spoke his body walked to where he had left the diagnostor helmet, he slipped the helmet on simply not waiting to conduct the proper rites, just leaving the machine to wake up and interface with the armours communication systems as he spoke. Then after his psychic message ended he started a transmission to the other marines, trusting the helmet would hide his words from the RT not that he overly cared.

++Brother Axeitons list described the Lan Dynatsy of having the right to operate in this sector nothing more. The Lan Dynasty was specifically excluded from the list the Deathwatch believe could have been responsible for the insertion of the Navigator, as during the time frame he was present elsewhere. As for distance, once Khazant falls, Vespasia is the next closest system of any strategic significance. It is behind enemy lines but it is not so isolated that it would not be of great benefit to the Imperium were is reclaimed.

Still considering the worst case scenario, if he does plan to take over the planet itself, even if he rules the world as his own domain, it creates another enemy for our foes in the Salient, another possible battleground for them to engage and weakens them dramatically. Besides when the front expands to include Vespasia, which is a more dangerous foe a renegade Rouge Trader on a world weakened by recent rebellion, or a world dominated by the legions? Still more likely if he seeks control of the world he will do it as a vassal of the Imperium, and men have been risen to the post of Planetary Governor for far worse reasons. Neither is too much of a risk to place the mission at risk.

Also it is important to bear in mind our extraction from the world, which may be vital to completing the mission, even were we to get another route to Vespasia the Rouge Trader's vessel remains the simplest route off world. All other extraction possibilities are fraught with unnecessary risk. Even factoring in fulfilling his request, transport by him has the highest possibilities of our mission succeeding.++

I care not if he sells its citizens to slavery if it serves the Imperium. I care not for his ego or his greed so long as they serve the Imperium. Castiel is ultimately correct: the Captain's trade is foul but sanctioned by the High Lords of Terra.

***You are free to ignore our mission strictures to seek a more pure vector of insertion. I fear not this Warrant or any foul slime clinging to it. I do not like the collusion but our window of opportunity to prevent the Thousand Sons from securing the ruins is dangerously narrow.

This was not the way of the Astartes that he knew.

Casting out his mind to the entire team he sends his thoughts firmly, albeit with care,

Facing Trader Lan, Pyriel beings the slow, methodical process of removing his helm. He had had quite enough of all of this. "Trader Lan, you have invited us here as guests and equals. Offering to provide discrete insertion to a dangerous area, as well as the difficult extraction. In trade, we have been insulting, and threatening. That is regrettable. I believe the point of contention lay in the arrangement of the deal itself. Some of us were unaware of how those of your austere station work. Nothing is given freely. We of Nocturne understand that. You have even gifted us with a great artifact from your Dynasty's past, albeit one of xenos origin. This too is not lost on me. In recognition of all of this, and as an offer of diplomacy, I offer a small penance. Upon our completion of both missions, and our return...I invite you to take part in my people's tradition of honor branding. I have brought my personal brazier along to commemorate the battles and kills this mission will bring, upon our flesh. I perform the branding upon you myself. It is no small honor that I propose, as I am sure you are well aware of. Few mortals outside the Astartes, and of Nocturne, witness this. So he focused, carefully guarding his mind as he did, he was not stable enough to open his mind any more to the warp than he needed.

As he was focusing his mind the Salamander who had been silent all this time finally spoke, and Castiel had to admit he was surprised at the eloquence with which the Salamander spoke and the extent he was willing to go to make restitution.

"Those Ministorum agents - aboard or on the planet? You are prepared to depart, Captain?"

Castiel ignored the conversation about loading he was fine to let those who were better at such take responsibility for such. Instead he quietly indicated for the servant to lead him to his assigned room, and after storing the essential gear he was carrying on him, he simply sat on the floor, to go though the rites of his chapter. He knew on this mission he would almost certainly have to be seen using the chapel, it would likely reassure Maximus somewhat even if he doubted their relationship was going to be easy for the immediate future. Still at the moment he didn't want to think about what words might be considered a deviation too far from the imperial code, or revealed a secret of their chapter. He needed to calm his mind, and they gave him the opportunity too.

After hours of repeated mantra’s and ritualised movements, Castiel was able to view the days events with the same cold detachment that he envied in Rostam. He still believed his actions had been correct even if his responses had been tainted by the curse of memories. He had grown complacent in his battle against the curse, he could not afford that luxury much longer. Rostam’s words rang though his mind again, but this time they only brought the slight touch of shame. He did need to become iron, but probably not in the way his adopted brother would realise.

He used the inbuilt communication systems in the armour, and selected a standard communication frequency, a non essential one but one all imperial ships would monitor. He didn’t pretend to understand the technology, but he knew his armour was more than capable of transmitting that far using the ships systems to boost the signal, if it was out of the vox’s considerable range.

++This is Brother Castiel, of the Deathwatch, in my meeting with Lord Lan he extended an invitation to visit his library. I request guidance to the library.++ Then he waited, he knew little of the elder, his main ‘battles’ had been with the Great Devourer and the Tau. Yet they were clearly involved and his lack of knowledge could harm the mission. Not to mention he wasn’t sure any of his assigned brothers would look at the texts. He was almost certain that Maximus would not, not after his interactions with the Rouge Trader, and the Space Wolves were hardly known for their literacy. Rostam might, but still he wasn’t going to risk that, or risk the dissent a discussion of the course of action would leave in their team.

Besides he could only imagine the look on Interrogator Knight’s face if he said he was going to pass up such an opportunity.

Although most of the Ecclesiarchy hold no love for our kind, I am sure that they will be more than willing to divulge." Between his tone and his stance, he has left no doubt that he intends on that being the case.

"There are certain Rites and Meditations that I must perform, but please inform them that once I am finished, I will meet with them. It should be an enlightening experience for all of us." Walking towards the door, he turns to face the Trader, "If you could designate somewhere that would be safe and spacious enough for me to perform my physical meditations, I would be grateful."

Rostam simply exits and strides purposefully toward the primary loading bay, causing crew and Servitors and whatever else to scatter from his unyielding path.

Not content to allow the Rogue Trader's crew to load and touch--and possibly upset or sabotage--the squadron of Astartes Combat Bikes and the single Assault Bike, Rostam moves and secures each vehicle and it's accompanying parts and ammunition personally, locking the ancient weapons in place aboard the designated heavy lifter and propitiating their Machine Spirits with storage rites. The process of loading is relatively fast but the rituals take hours and this Rostam finishes only after Lan's ship has cast off and begun its trajectory out of the system.

That duty fulfilled, Rostam makes an initial sweep of the cargo hold before opening his squad vox. +++Vehicles secure, Brothers. Sitrep?+++

Castiel was pouring over maps, trying to collect all the inofrmation and plan a sensible course of approach. He was slightly startled as Rostam's voice flicked into his ears, he looked up and for a few moments was disorientated as the marine matched up unfamilar surroundings. While he had been reading though the tomes he had genuninely forgot where he was.

++ Castiel speaking, Epilson segment of the 19th level, preparing my mind for insertion.++ He flicked channel smoothly and continued talking straight to Rostam, he didn't want another fight with their supposed leader++Presently taking advantage of the RT's texts to reasearch the elder, I have yet to face them in battle and fortune favours the prepared mind.++

+++Brother Castiel, you are in the Rogue Trader's Librarium? I am en route.+++

Rostam heads in that direction.

The library is extensive. It is mostly filled with historical treatises, boring texts regarding inconsequential Saints that were martyred for largely pointless causes, having achieved little except a glorious death, being remembered by only a handful of scholars.

There is also a wealth of texts on commerce, as one would expect, and many ledgers regarding the Lan dynasty's own business. He seems to traffic arms to flashpoints for the Crusade. His dealings with the Deathwatch are coded, the word 'Deathwatch' having been replaced with various codes of which you have been made aware of previously.

He has been involved in various covert operations with the Deathwatch in the past, ferrying small strike teams onto Forge Worlds and similar. He has delivered xenos artefacts to the Watch Commander. He has even handed over live xenos specimens for research purposes.

Castiel finds various maps of Vespasia, although they do seem dated. They don't, for instance, have any recordings of man-made structures. He and Rostam manage to piece together various geographical maps of the area surrounding the xenos ruins, and, with some knowledge of how the traitors might operate, manage to reason where they think patrols or checkpoints might be found nearby.

Together, they are able, as far as they are aware, to plan an insertion route that is likely to avoid even close scrutiny. However, they find out little about the ruins themselves. There are a lot of cryptic clues regarding them, but they mean very little.

Rostam also finds a truly ancient text on an old dataslate, regarding classified operations against xenos sorcerers in the galactic west. It is largely shrouded in poetic language, but there are references to what might be Inquisitorial agents, using similar language to some apocryphal texts attributed to Roboute Guilliman.

They make mention of striking at witches from "behind mental ramparts provided by one's battle-brothers".

Rostam's knowledge of some controversial, often disputed sections of the Codex Astartes, leads him to think that, combined, a cadre of Librarians, making full use of their psychic powers can easily shut down a witch's sorcerous onslaught.

If all, bar one, of the Librarians focus on using their psychic hoods as a shield, the remaining Librarian can make use of his powers as a sword with which to purge the heretic; after all, it is known that the servants of the Enemy lack the purity of the loyalist Adeptus Astartes, and their psychic defences can often be surprisingly lacking.

This takes days of study, of course...

Anything you want to do during the journey, or shall I skip ahead?

+++Brothers. Castiel and I have uncovered information which shall prove damning for our opponents. Meet in the Librarium at once. We have a battle plan to formulate.+++

When the team arrives, Rostam begins: +++Our host may be a filthy profiteering xenophile slaver, but he is an ally to the Deathwatch. Personal feelings for his business dealings aside, we have discovered extensive if ancient maps of Vespasia and I have uncovered apocryphal tactics on engaging the sort of witch-covens we are likely to face. These tactics are at least tacitly supported by the Codex Astartes,+++ he adds.

+++With psychic hood and force blade and power in our very genes, we will break the minions of this world and their pitiful traitor overlords. Truly, the only information we still lack is details on the xenos ruins, however one or several among us trained in the telepathic arts might glean some speck of knowledge from the Eldar witch-soul.+++

At the call from his battle brothers Maximus dons his ancient battle helm, becoming once more a faceless bringer of death and joins the others in the Librarium.

Listening to the words he nods at the reference to the Trader from his Brother. At the final words he ponders the irsk of consorting with a powerful xnoe mind.

"If the xeno ruins of the decadent Eldar are the target of the Traitors then it would be wise to consult with soul of this petty warlock.

We must take care my Brothers. I have witnessed their power before and they are the equal of even one such as us in terms of power. Even if they lack any faith, purity or force of purpose.

If we are to do this we will do this in the secret of our prepared chambers. Where ritual and wards can seal us from prying eyes.

Essentially - who has the highest WP? Or the most teleapathy powers? THey are probably best suited to doingthe actual mind linkage.

"While I appreciate your paranoia, it is not from this vessel that I would most fear the eyes. Besides us gathering in one of our rooms, is more likely to gain attention from those on the vessel with the sight. Surely this vessel has an astropathic tower, and asking to use it privately would hardly gather suspision, ecspecially since our purpose is inside the same discipline.

The other reason for using the tower is while I am sure we are all proficent at inscribing pentagramic and hexagramic wards, we do not have the time or resources to do so on the scale that the wards on the tower will have been prepared. This is hardly a trivial undertaking, and the mind inside the stone is a greater threat than those on the vessel.

This may be a chance to practice the tactics Rostam uncovered before we reach Vespasia.

Castiel wins on the most telepathy powers, but on the other hand I think I'm the only person who didn't invest in +5 WP (I can see arguments for and against the three telepaths on the squad to be honest.)

+++Let us reconvene in either location. Any set of wards is superior to the lack of warding in this chamber. And I have not focused on the telepathic arts; however, I will ward your minds with projections of my psychic hood while you commune with the witch. Additionally, we have isolated a route to our target locations: the ruins and the lair of these witches so plaguing the insurrection.

+++Deep analysis of the Codex along with apocryphal tactica explain that the tactics required to down the witch-coven safely will require the majority of our Kill-Team to combine the fields of their hoods in a psychoactive aegis nullifying enemy magick while one of us scourges the sorcerers with the Emperor's Own fury. It shall be simple enough to rend them to pieces while my Brothers squash their pitiful talents like a beetle beneath an adamantium boot.+++ Rostam's tone of voice leaves little question that he believes he is best suited for the smiting role in the witch-hunt.

+++Are there more preparations to make, aside from interrogating the xeno witch-soul? If not, we shall adjourn to a warded area to do so. Build your reserves of contempt, brothers+++ he adds to Maximus and Castiel.

"I believe that is all, I will meet you in the astropathic tower, considering the danger of what we attempt I believe it would be prudent to have the tools of the apothecary present at the investigation. Maximus as it seems you will be speaking to the stone it may be wiser to forgo the helmet, using just the hood. While it should not be necessary, there are multiple passages in the codex about having contingencies even for situations you believe unlikely.” With that Castiel left the room.

*Moving things ahead**

For the first time Castiel was wearing his full suit of armour, even if most of the armour was hidden under the camoline cloak which was casting the runes scribed into the tower behind him over the armour, these symbols shimmering slightly whenever the marine moved.

"With the considerations that as Maximus will be unsuitable for command during this operation, I will oversee this interrogation. We will use the Aquila formation, with Maximus taking one head and myself the other. I will use my own telepathic abilities to watch his mind in the prayers before and after, and during the interrogation. Should I see any evidence that the eldar is influencing your mind brother Maximus, I will call for you to interrupt the rite and Rostam will take the soul stone and remove it from your proximity.

If you ignore the warnings you understand we will be forced to terminate the rite by force. Either way you should not attempt to leave the wards of the tower until we have ensured your mind is free of the aliens touch. Should you move to leave the tower before that, again you will be restrained. These precautions are not intended to be a slight on your abilities, we deal with an intelligence caprious and powerful, and the penalty of failure is too severe to take chances.

Rostam take the tail of the Aquila, Ulfric and Pryiel should take the two wings, the three of you will create the aegis. Be careful the eldar are known for their treachery, commence the aegis. Maximus, I will be scrutinising your thoughts from this point, continue your prayers but I wish to gain familiarity with your mind, so I can notice even the slightest change the farseer makes.”

Maximus bows his head in prayer long and hard as he stands in the centre of the choir chamber. The massive arched chamber strewn with powerful runes of warding surrounds him as he offers the first protective words of Gulliman's prayer.

Watching the soul stone in the heart of the chamber he draws upon the power of his squad mates and allows the rough and brutal touch of his brother.

Allowing his mind to leave his body he projects it towards the Soul Stone seeking to exert his massively powerful will upon the stone and dominate the xeno within.

"Attend Brothers. We begin".

Rostam unclips the spirit stone from his armor and attaches it to Maximus's armored wrist so that the stone is wholly held in his right hand. He takes his position at the ritual position known to the Iron Hands as the Aquila's Talons - also known as the Tail or Claws to other Chapters' Librariums.

Rostam serves as the foundation - that which anchors the spiritual Aquila to the world of flesh and physics where even the immaterial can be smote to ruin by the guns and blades of Man. And he serves as the scourge against uncontrolled Empyreal tides - the claws which simultaneously tear open the Warp for use by the Emperor's servants and bind the portals shut against free access by the evils residing there.

His psychic hood comes online with a faint steel-blue flicker around his helmet stabilizing into an aggressively cold, pulsating psychic glow, emanating spitefulness and contempt towards warply denizens, holding back the full extent of their powers and chastening anything that dares approach too closely. His right hand, sacrificed at the moment when he ceased being an Aspirant and truly became an Astartes, similarly glows with this cold, merciless light.

"Shield beyond sight, ne’er failing light. Shield beyond sight, ne’er failing light--" his voice intones rhythmically through his armor's throat speakers, voice richly deep and commanding with the slightest hints of condescension, brooking no resistance, in perfect control of his role as centerpoint and focus of the psychic aegis.

His glowing right hand rests comfortably on the hilt of his force weapon, ready to draw should problems with the ritual demand action.

Visions strike out at Maximus. No, strike isn't the right word. They loom, as if a creature appearing from mist, and disappearing again. He catches glimpses of things, hears things, but doesn't quite catch what. It is like being lost in fog.

Occasionally he sees shadowy figures. They move as if out of sync with time, sometimes backwards, and at odd speeds. Memories surface in his mind, memories not from his mind, but from his blood. He catches glimpses of what could only be the Emperor, but he vanishes in smoke and mirrors.

He sees Vespasia. It must be Vespasia, must it not? He sees the ruins, almost hidden by fog. Time passes quickly. He can tell, as the sun cycles through the sky at a rapid pace. He sees xenos, yes, Eldar, living in the ruins... no, a disgusting, yet elegant and beautiful settlement.

The Eldar disappear, leaving in an abrupt fashion. Some time later, humans move amongst them. Hairy barbarians, by the looks of things. They largely ignore the ruins after looting some expensive looking artwork.

The humans are later in chains, the chains are more heard rattling, and felt on the wrists rather than seen. Tentacled beasts can be seen and smelled in the mists. Unclean monsters.

Time passes. The monsters remain, yet you can hear them chattering in fear. There is something else in the darkness, and the mist, which seems to be clearing. The chains which Maximus can feel on his wrists seem to break, he can almost hear the metal burst. He can feel the weight of a bolter in his hand, can almost taste sickeningly sweet mutant blood on his lips.

The visions end, Maximus focusing on trying to communicate with the xeno spirit.

It feels like being in a conversation, where the other person has forgotten what they wish to say. No, it is like being in a conversation where he himself has forgotten what to say. Maximus feels like he has forgotten something, yet knows he hasn't. He knows exactly why he is here. The spirit mist clouds his mind, but his mind is clear, isn't it?

There are voices now, High Gothic by the sounds of things, yet in the most archaic dialect Maximus has ever heard. Interesting that actual language is being used in psychic communication...

Speak Language (High Gothic) at +30 too! (I know, this rarely gets done!)

Castiel is able to witness this with something of a lack of power, he knows that interfering will be difficult, but he has something of a clearer view (ironic, considering that he can't truly see what is going on), having a step back, and a greater detachment from the spirit stone.

Castiel will get bonuses to any Scrutiny checks and similar that come up, and should also make a Psyniscience check with a +50 bonus, due to the wise choice of Mind Scan.

He can also make the Speak Language check.

Maximus shakes his head slightly as the images assail him. Under his breath the ancient mantras that Guillaman laid down in the Codex Astartes. A jerk of his hands, servos whirring in the ancient power armour that dates back almost to those days snaps his eyes open for a second as he returns briefly to the here and now.

Glancing at the bowed heads of his comrades he finds strength. Even as he seeks to understand the archaic words of the xeno he attempts to bow it his will. "Speak words with me xeno. Give us the information we seek or we shall shatter your stone and allow your great devourer to consume you..."

As Castiel watched he muttered the words of one of his chapters rites, as his mind searched for any hint that the Xenos or any other entity was affecting the mind of the consul before him. He relaxed slightly with the spike of irritation that burst off Maximus, the feeling seeming to radiate though the marines psych. So far there didn't seem to be any holes in the contempt that remained a shield even after the power armour was rendered useless. Still he had no idea how long the conversation would last and he needed to stay vigilant.
