So, the shoes allowed me to outrun death, but they had, like, individual toes.

I'm guessing you meant to post this in the general webcomics forum? I think they even have a big thread for XKCD discussion.

You could probably just edit the title so that a passing mod might merge this thread into the xkcd thread or just move this to the general forum. That strip was pretty cute though.

He's comparing it to what Haley said to V and Celia about the Boots of Speed.

It makes me sad that so many people didn't pick up on this :(

Only because the OP made zero effort in establishing that connection.

I kinda thought that the thread title and the quote would be enough.

I got it immediately.

That makes two comics the Giant has beaten to the punchline by several years (the other being Xykon doing the whole "for me it was Tuesday" schtick well before Black Mage in 8-bit Theater, although that one obviously predates both comics).

Boots of speed are a real D&D item - you can look them up in the SRD.

What puzzles me about this thread is the second post.

Not with the amount of sleep I haven't been getting lately, heh. :smallsigh:

Nope. I didn't get it either. While the "Haley's boots" connection did pop into my head after a few moments of thought, I have learned that assumptions on the internet are a definite "bad idea." Taking a post at face value may not be a "good idea," it usually is a "better idea" than attempting to infer anything...

To anyone who didn't get it, that actually made more sense. Since it seemed like the OP was a non-sequitur post about XKCD, it was in response to the initial misunderstanding. I think. At least, I can’t come up with any other interpretation.

Actually, if a mod thinks a thread should be in a different subforum, we'll move it regardless of what's in the title. If you want to get our attention, you should report the first post with a short message explaining.

Okay, that's two posts from martianmister that I don't understand.

Also why a martian mister has a female avatar.

The second strip martianmister linked also has to do with supposed apparel of speed which is aesthetically displeasing. Also, a lot of people seem to completely miss the subtle genius of martianmister's posts...

It's got to do with a piece of clothing that increases people's speed, so I'd say it's a bit more relevant then the first post.

There are definitely two kinds of players out there. Most of my players will use an item or not based entirely on its stats, no matter how dumb I say it looks. On the other hand, there are those who care enough about their character's person to consider the implications of appearance.

"Sure that dwarven chain mail doesn't impede me any more than my leather jerkin, but my guy has a leather look, can I wear it underneath?"

Some people who are definite "Minmaxes" still care about ugly armor:

Edit: For the record, I thought I was in the RolePlaying forum.

Second one is already explained. First one, well, you need to get message in that strip....

Also why a martian mister has a female avatar.

Because I am not a martian or a mister. :smallamused:

I think you'll find that "neither" and "nor" are very good words to use in this particular situation, madam. <shifts pince-nez to a more comfortable position and leans back smugly>
