Colm stands in front of a billboard in the town of Dusk, a medium-sized city. There are three notable papers which he could take for a job.

The first is looking for an adventurer to go down a dungeon and locate an item for him. The payment is 400 gold pieces, plus whatever else is found down there. There are directions to where you should go before going there, which you can understand.

The second is looking for a rogue, or at least that's what you infer, for a special job. There are also directions, but more than that isn't there.

The third is looking for an envoy to take a package to a town several days away. The payment is 600 gold pieces in total, 200 here and the rest when the package arrives. There are, like the other ones, directions.

Looking at the billboard, Colm took a peek at the three papers that caught his interest. The first one was the most direct, telling him to go into a dungeon to retrieve a certain item for the requester. The second one just told him that they were looking for someone like him for a special job, but beyond that, nothing else was there. The third one was a delivery job, taking a package to a town that was a long distance away. After looking at the jobs for a while, he decided to take the one involving the dungeon. Before meeting with the person who put this job up, though, he decided to take a quick look around the town.

Walking around the town, you see that this town is pretty much built for adventurers. There's a tavern near the billboard, there's a smithy which sells weapons and armors next to it, across the street there's a general goods store, and next to it is a church with a sign that says they have healers. A bit further in, there's an arcane school set on a rather large grounds, obviously for anything arcane. From buying scrolls to learning a cantrip, they seem to have it. The richer part of the city is sealed off with its own walls, separating it from the poorer people, and there's a guard at the gate there, who didn't let you pass. As you keep walking, you notice a few more buildings among the many many houses, which didn't seem to have anything of interest.

After looking around the place for a while, he noticed it was pretty much a prime location for anyone adventuring to stop at when supplies were needed. Done with looking around for now, he returned to the billboard once again, looking at the job involving the dungeon again. After taking another look at the directions, he followed them to the word, going where the directions took him.

You found yourself led to a small building. When you knock on the door, it opens up and there's nobody behind it. You hear a cough below you look down, and see a two foot tall gnome standing there. You mention the flyer and he beckons you in. "I recently uncovered..." He passes you into his home, which you have to duck to stop from hitting the roof, and begins to lead you down a stairwell as he speaks. "... an item that I'm looking in some old tomes. It's in a dungeon not far from here, so I need someone else to go get it for me."

Upon going down a few floors, you see that he has a whole underground laboratory. The roof is far above your head now so you're able to stand at your full height. There are various alchemic items everywhere you see. Unfinished constructs line the walls and a single one goes up to your group. "This is Guard, a construct which will show you the way there. If you have any questions, ask him." The gnome walks away, leaving you with the metallic and wooden creature.

Colm looked around the house as he listened to the gnome explain to him what he was to do, all while trying to avoid hitting his head on the ceiling. Upon hearing that he was to look for an object in the dungeon, he was curious about what it was. He also didn't know what said object would be, so before the gnome could go away, he asked, "So, this item... What does it look like, and do the tomes say anything about what it does?"

The professor turned around and looked you in the eye. "It looks like a crystal. Blue, shiny, crystal-like, the works. As to what it does, I'm paying you to go and bring it back for me, not to use it, so it shouldn't be a problem if you don't know what it does. Oh, and he'll be coming with you. You are not to touch it. He is."

Colm nodded at the gnome's response, understanding where he's coming from. Turning around to the construct, he looked it over quick. Not really having anything to ask right now, he spoke to the construct, "Well... Lead the way, then."

Linguz

The construct nodded and began to lead you deeper through the caverns you were currently in. It took you to a small tunnel until you came out in a larger room. The drop to the floor was five feet, an easy drop for you and the construct. Before it dropped, it pulled out a torch from the wall.

In the room you're currently in, you see an unlit brazier at each corner. The torch behind you, held by Guard, lights up most of the room, but the opposite corners are in shadows. In the shadows, you can see a door. Two doors, in fact, one across the room from the other.

Right after his first reckless swing, the rat stops moving. You proceed to bash it again, killing it completely. You were about to bash it a third time, but Guard stopped you. "It's dead."

Looking around the room, you see two braziers and a door. The door is chewed through at the bottom, which is most likely how the rat go in.

After Guard stopped him, Colm calmed down. *Sheesh... That thing was annoying... But I feel better now...* he thought, his frustration being relieved. So far, no traps had been set off due to their fighting, making him feel slightly secure. But he had to stay on his toes, especially since there are monsters that can roam about. Seeing that the rat got through the bottom of the door, he assumed the rat got through without incident. So he moved to the door and opened it up, looking inside the new room.

After finding nothing, Colm looked at the 4 doors again. "Hmm... Another decision to make..." he muttered to himself, trying to decide which door to take. He assumed the door to his right (assuming he returned to his original position) would take him back to the entrance, so he looked at the door on the same wall that he entered the room from. He figures that door might lead to a dead end, but it could also lead somewhere else. Curiosity got the better of him, as he walked to the door on the same wall and opened it, peeking inside.

Looking around the room, you see that it also has four braziers at each corner. All unlit. On one wall, part of the wall is broken off. Ten feet above the ground is an opening in the wall. After the fighting had been done, he looked around the room again. Noticing the bare tables and the wall that was partially broken off, he shook his head. *I was right, dead end...* he thought to himself. He then looked at the brazier nearest to him and pondered, *Hmm... Maybe we should light some of these along the way, just to be safe... But will they even light?* He decided to inspect the brazier, to see if they can be lit or not.

---

Seeing that the brazier can, in fact, be lit up, he pulls his flint and steel out, lighting the brazier next to him. He then moves out to the earlier room and looks around again. He then notices another brazier in the corner of the room. So he approached that one and lit it up as well. After that, he pocketed his flint and steel, approaching the door that has not been gnawed at by those rats. Cautiously, he opened the door and peeked inside.

They each hold a longsword on the side of the door and a steel shield in the other. They are crouching slightly and have their shields raised.

Looking into the next room, you see a small creature that resembles a dog, but its body is formed from iron plattes and bars. It stands about two feet high ah should, with its mouth lined with serrated blades of steel. This seems like the final line of defense, seeing as the crystal is illuminating parts of the room behind it. In fact, the entire room is clearly lit, between the crystal and the torch. You see stone statues lining the sides of the chamber, each holding a downward pointing sword in their hands.

You do remember seeing a sign on a few of the tents. The bandits are fairly infamous around here. They are the Turtle Shell Bandits, strange name but you weren't the one who chose it. You can't recall the leader, but you do remember what they do. They go between towns, moving often. Usually not staying very long too. They tend to leave the towns and cities alone for the most part, and the towns and cities do the same to them. Their forces rival those of some cities, so it helps the cities out.

"[Boy] Maybe. They might just demand her back or something... and the mayor would have to surrender her... we're not very big on defense and currently, we don't have all that many adventurers here, as you probably saw in the inn..." He then pulled his backpack off of his back and opened it quietly, pulling out his bedroll. Letting it roll open, he fixed it up and opened it for Kate. After getting it ready along with setting her longspear and backpack next to where she would be sleeping, he gently put the girl in the bedroll, feeling that would be more comfortable for her than the grass would be. After doing that, he picked up his backpack and pulled out his waterskin. Opening it up, he took a quick gulp of water, although that quick gulp was the last there was in the container. Looking over, he saw the river that he had seen when they arrived.

He would make sure to get fill up his waterskin first thing in the morning, so for now, he put it in the backpack. Closing the backpack, he carried it over with him and sat it down by the tree that he originally rested Kate on. Sitting down with his back against the tree, Colm gazed at the night sky, looking at all the stars up there. Letting out a sigh, he whispered to himself, "How long has it been since I slept under the stars..." He then closed his eyes, remembering why he had originally become an adventurer in the first place. He wanted to help his family get out of debt, so he set out for a life of adventuring to try and obtain the money needed to get his family out of debt. Opening his eyes again, he stared once more at the starry sky. *I'll come back to you all when I have enough money... I promised you guys that before I left, and I plan to keep that promise...* he thought to himself, before he began to let out a yawn. It was time for him to sleep now, and so he closed his eyes, drifting off to sleep to get ready for the rest of their journey in the morning.

As you're sleeping... you begin to hear something. It brings you out of sleep enough to recognize it. Voices... voices and movement. "[1] There's two people here. Both sleeping." A moment of silence, then the voice continued. "[1] Two backpacks, no campfire. One's sleeping against the tree." You hear some more movement, the clinking of metal on metal, and someone patting something else. "[1] Hey, you have to check this girl out. She's one of those cats." Another voice. "[2] Quiet... going to...Take... girl." He's obviously better at being quiet. By this time, you've opened your eyes partially (enough to let you see out) and see that the full moon is shining down upon you and giving you semi-clear sight of them. Two, one larger than the other but not by much. Your hand had moved to your dagger at this point as well. Both of their weapons are undrawn as well.

Pulling both bandits together and sitting them with their backs against each other, he began to tie them both up. After tying them up, he dragged them 20 feet away before returning to the tree he was sleeping against. Sitting his backpack and spiked chain closer to him, he rested against the tree as he looked up to the sky once more. Although he was thankful that Kate saved him, he was wondering why she spat at the bandit. After all, these guys may have a bounty on their heads somewhere. However, sleep called to him once more as he began to fall asleep again.

When they neared the forest, he looked around, moved elsewhere nearby, repeated this a time or two, and then ducked and looked around for something on the ground. Once you enter, you see that the floor is literally full of dirt and rocks. The walls are uneven and there are a few columns of stone that support the roof. There's two chairs and a table to your immediate right and you can see one bedroll against the wall further in. To your right you see a bunch of wooden planks blocking a pass (the black lines on the map). Past that, you see another room with a more... modern floor. Further in there's a desk (with a chair unshown on the map) with several knickknacks on it and two differently styled chests. There's also another bedroll, but it was unseeable from the point of entrance. There are a few unlit torches in holds along the walls every here and there as well. The battleaxe is nicely made. Really nicely made. If you had to put a price on it, you'd put it at 160 gold pieces.

The club is really nicely made as well. That much you can see. You'd estimate it at 90 gold pieces of worth.

Kate nods and you're off, after marking where the cave was on your map (which you have and weighs nothing and is magical so it pops in and out of existence at your wish). You return to the road and keep heading towards the estate. It soon comes into vision, along with everything else about it. The smell is detected first by Kate, who begins to move faster and only explains when you ask. The sound hits you before then, though, and it sounds like it's about to begin. Magic is obviously being used to enhance the sound of the speaker and you hear a young girl's voice. "[N] Greetings, everyone! Welcome to the annual Eclairian competition! First up is James the noble [...], Dardiana the claw-meister [...], Gregory the trader [...], Stonefoot the priest [...], Morai the sailor [...], and Vangila the scout [...]. The last two contestants, this year, will be selected by a random arrow from our ranger here."

By the time she finished her speech, you had approached the estate and were much closer. Close enough to see the girl and the people she had called up. There was an elf, two humans, a raptoran (http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs18/f/2007/218/8/1/Garuda_by_BeBelial.jpg), a halfling, a shifter, and a dwarf. You see the elf knock an arrow and let it go high into the air. Moments later, it lands far from the stage, right in front of you. Seems you and Kate are the final contestants.

After you drop off your items there, she takes you down to the arena, racing grounds, and the other locations. She explains that breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be on them and once they're done at the contests, they can do whatever for the rest of the day inside the mansion grounds. You're also told that the first contest, the archery contest, is in an hour and that you should get ready and get a bow (and maybe practice a bit) before. When questioned about not owning a bow, she explains that they'll be supplied with longbows if they want one.

(PS: Some areas aren't shown on the maps. Places like libraries, fishing holes, and that stuff are also around here. Also, the blocks with names are the characters, but they're for when the contests are being done and whatnot, not right now.)

When they were done with the tour and everything, Colm began to walk back to where he was resting, motioning for Kate to follow. Once they arrived at his room, Colm pulled out his Battleaxe. Looking at it once more, he asked, "Kate, you still have the club I gave you, correct?"

When you get to the archery fields, you don't see Kate anywhere. You take up one of the estate's longbows and begin practicing. The few also there are James with an even larger bow than a longbow, Dardiana with a longbow, Stonefoot with a shortbow, and Vangila (the raptoran) with a shortbow. The time passes, more people come, the crowd begins to increase, and Kate finally arrives. Nidal comes to and she calls every contestant closer. "[N] You each get five shots, with standard arrows and your choice of bow. If you don't have one, you'll use a courtesy longbow. The range starts at 50 feet, and we do two different ranges. 50 and 150. Points are awarded for any arrow that hits the target, more the closer it is to the center. Points are added together and if there's a tie, we push it out to 250. And just repeat that process until neither gets any points or one wins. The top three will be awarded with the platinum coins, the last place would normally lose some but none of you have any. Good luck, and may the best archer win."

You both go fishing and after a few tips and times that Kate shows you how to fish, you try your own luck and catch a fish on your first try. Seems you're a natural at this. Time passes and soon, you find that you have to go to the course.

Nidal appears, yet again, and explains, "[N] First, Eirael will show you what the course is. That will be his full run. After that, you will go one at a time. Now, pay attention to Eirael."

It starts with a 100 foot dash, followed by a log (tumble or jump) and a fall (untrained tumble). After that, it's a short 30 foot run to a wall, which you have to climb (climb). Then about 35 feet of running and a turn, followed by another run, about 40 feet, and a jump across a chasm (jump). 25 feet ahead, you have to balance. The first and last parts are easier, but they take a longer time to get to. It's an uncluttered balance followed by a rocky balance. Both balances are about 15 feet long (1 balance check). Then a 40ish foot run, a 60 foot run, a small 5 foot jump down, and then a race for the finish line.

After falling once in the jump and once in the balance, Eirael was able to make it back to the starting line in 54 seconds (9 rounds). (Yea, time is kinda wacked out.)
