Hello Playgrounders, once again! I come to you all this time not only for aid, but to provide a creative exercise at the same time. I've seen a few other threads like this, and figured I would join in and give it a try as well.

Before I begin, I will state that this campaign is using the Pathonder system, though since this thread's purpose is roleplay and background development, I decided to post it here.

As my part of contributing to my group's campaign world, I've made a Collective of independent mercenary companies, each sponsored and managed by a shadowy organization. While most of these companies simply need a name and basic summary, one in particular ties to the history of a certain PC in the campaign, and needs further fleshing...

The Pheonix Division is a nomadic mercenary group in this Collective, made famous for being the only group comprised entirely of halflings. Showing remarkable tenacity despite assumed perceptions on their race, this band takes part in all number of missions, ranging from VIP escort to reconnaissance, to retrieval, to target and group dispatching. Despite the usual merc ways, the Pheonix Division prides itself on performing contracts that better civilians, striving to minimize any collateral damage.

The Division is currently comprised of 24 halflings, including their captain and 5 other lieutenants. Each has their own methods of contributing to the cause, and each has their own story to tell. That's where you come in :). I'll provide the details for the ones I have already as an example, while also providing the criteria I request...

-All members must be halflings.
-Class(including archetypes) and level are appreciated details, though specifics such as features chosen are not entirely necessary. Allowed materials include anything found in the Pathfinder SRD.
-I am looking for some diversity, but I don't think that should be an issue in this forum.

The Pheonix Division

1: Captain Talyn Featherhair (15th level Paladin)
The leader of this intrepid group of miniature mercenaries, Captain Featherhair runs his Division with a iron but gentle fist. Strong and lean, the breastplate-armored warrior of good fits his surname perfectly, a short mane of white hair feathering back to show off his face, often kept in a sort of half-scowl. Often taking part in missions himself, Talyn sees leading his Division as an opportunity to do some good in the world, and expects nothing but the best from his comrades.

x25x: Shaiya Yewblossom[/b] (1st level Dragoon(fighter))
(Note: this is the PC tied to the group)
A free spirit to the heart, the recruited warrior Shaiya was just as much "one of the guys" as anybody in the Division. Her mop of Auburn hair held up by a headband, the lance-wielded had trouble paying attention to authority, finding the thrill of battle and opportunity too good to pass up. Unfortunately, this wild behavior caused a situation, where a missed order led to the severe injury of one of her senior squadmates. Shamed by her failure, she stole out a short time later, abandoning her Division in search of a different opportunity.

That's what I got. In advance, thanks for your contributions :). Feel free to message me with any questions.

I've always liked having a Rogue lieutenant in my mercenary groups, and given the halfling make up of the group it seems all the more appropriate.

Lieutenant Glen Softsole grew up the rascal among his siblings, the third of eight, but when his parents died and he found himself the eldest unwed child, his older siblings having moved far away, he took his responsibility to the younger ones seriously. For a time he tried to work honest jobs, but when he found his skill for sleight of hand made it easier to make ends meet, he was drawn to that path. Even so, he had a noble heart and when Talyn approached him and pulled him from the gutter, promising a mercenary income that could provide for his family, Glen was only too happy to accept.

Nothing says "mercenary" quite like the knife-tossing, fortune-seeking halfling. And so, I present to you -

Lieutenant Pip Troublefinder, master thrower. Pip was born to a circus life. The sun of a tumbler and a juggler, Pip fell into his role early in life - he had the natural talents to make him a great performer. But Pip was unsatisfied with the circus life - he could wield a sword, he could hide and sneak, he could climb and balance and throw knives with shocking precision. In fact, he was a little better than most people at practically everything. But unlike the other circus folk, there was no one thing at which he was truly great. So he decided that if there was nothing in the circus he could excel at, he would just have to set out on his own and find it elsewhere.

That's how he met Talyn Featherhair and The Phoenix Division. It was in a tiny roadside tavern somewhere between the middle and the far side of nowhere, and it was pure luck he happened to be grifting strangers there when the company came through. It wasn't until a few soldiers caught their noticeably lighter purses that anyone managed to connect the unassuming performer to the plague of vanishing coin. Pip might have gotten his head beat in, had Talyn not suggested he repay the coin by acting as a company scout. And lucky he did, because Troublefinder would prove true to his name - wherever he would scout, he always found trouble.

But unlike the other circus folk, there was no one thing at which he was truly great.

The character concept sounded very familiar, and this line gave it away completely. Not to mention your username...

Judeau was a cool character, but I never understood why the heck he said that, or why Berserk fans use it so much when describing him. He was truly great with throwing knives (the long distance throw straight to the exposed neck of an armored enemy in the middle of the night can attest to that). Maybe his character was being modest? Maybe bad translation? I don't know.

7. Sgt Bergen.

Ranger 2/Fighter 2/Other full BaB 1/Cragtop Archer 5

+1 Dragonbow Longbow of Distance w flight arrows. +2 dex gloves.

Feats: Point blank shot, far shot, etc.

Bergen grew up in the wilds, and learned quickly that fighting things face to face was for chumps. Drafted into the unit, he's served grudgingly, and never even gotten close to the front lines. Unfortunately, his continued failure to die has earned him repeated promotions. He fears that, one day, he might end up an officer, and have to actually talk to underlings, and worse, care about them.

Someone more experienced than me could stat them, but how about Black Company? That, in my opinion, is the ideal merc group.

Here is a list of members off wikipedia:
Members of the Black Company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Company#Members_of_The_Black_Company)

About the only thing worth mentioning is although it says wizards, the spell casters in the company are super low powered compared to others in the setting. So maybe make them low level sorcerers who only have utility and illusion spells.

Black Company is probably one of the best where it comes to looking for inspirations and I recommend ripping off some of their characters (hell, I'm trying recenly to get into a game with character based on Goblin) and if not for characters per see, they do have functions you should consider - standard-bearer, medic, annalist, wizard (Goblin, One-Eye and Silent were all pretty good illusionists and knew few other tricks, they were masters of throwing the enemy into confusion) engineer.

Okay, lets make some of those functions:

3. Potricit McBagrilintosh, chief eingineer - the halfing responsible for all engineering job, the guy who keeps an eye on technical side of many plans. Is rather aged, you can see gray in his hair, but damn if he doesn't do his jobw well and damn twice if he doesn't love it. He is the one who made Phoniex Division dig tunel through a mountain and escape from city besieged by an army of Orcs. Likes to smoke pipe all the time, desperately looks for an appertnice he could pass his knowledge to. Class - I don't know, Alchemist?

17. Standard-bearer Buggy Bug McBagbug, from the far north. Barbarian from far tribe, enamored by Phoenix Division's discipline he joined them and quickly advances in the ranks to become standard-bearer. He rides to the battle with standard attached to his back, ready to protect it with his life. Extremely loyal combatant and formidable opponent but also reckless and naive, idolizing his group to the point of annoyance. Barbarian/Cavalier

Filling in some other roles that'd probably be helpful.

14) Lilda, bard. Decent charisma, good intelligence, average or less than average strength. possible feat, improved initiative.

Lilda is a bard only because she was practically born into it. Her parents raised her to be one, but her dreams were elsewhere. At home (and possibly in the division) she gets crap for being a bard, and being generally unhelpful at any particular task. She won't be at the forefront of any battle, or sneaking in to do espionage. Nevermind that she's giving a couple dozen fighters bonuses.

But, she can surprise most people with her skills. Need to know what something is worth? She can appraise it. Handle animals? No problem. Heal check? cool. Of course she speaks Auran. And Aquan. And Sylvan. Oh, and she knows about architecture and engineering and dungeons.

15) Thuros, cleric of Yondalla (protection). never prepares cure spells in the morning, but will lose a prepared for a cure in a heartbeat.

He was the only halfling of his clan willing to break from the more comfortable life of his clan, being a farmer, or carpenter, or the like. As he grew up, he realized that someone needed to protect them, and paying tribute to hold off invaders is not the way to live.

He turned to religion, and as Yondalla is protector of the Halflings, he protected his clan. He felt responsible for them, and fought off the invaders on one occasion. But he was not received well, for his clan knew that the invaders would just come back, angrier than ever. Looked down upon by his clan, he left to wander the world, until he came upon this group. After forming close friendships with a few of the members, he decided to stay, and protect his new clan.

8. Oryun, werewolf ex-paladin.

Oryun's grandpappy drove too far wandering into the woods and came back with a crazy look in his eye. He was exiled for lycanthropy, but left two kids & some wolfish genes.

Oryun has tried to control himself (and his desire at expiation led him to paladinhood) but he can't shake the wilderness inside. He's lawful neutral - just as the leaves fall & the rains come and just as the moon shines once a month, he knows his place in the world.

He just gets a bit crazy, that's all.

9. Theros, binder

The subtler vagaries of halfling esotericism & occult theory are simply overwhelming. Theros has lived & taught among various enclaves - now his expenses are running high & the persecution is stultifying.

He plays a primarily back-up role, although with magical threats his knowledge leads him to a position of leadership. No one expects the weird-looking character with the crazy religion to suddenly take charge. He's seen scary stuff, though, and realizes the consequences of not doing so.

10 and 11, The Riffley Brothers, or the twin bastards.

Raolf and Ryle Riffley, the twins. They were raised fatherless and poor. Each left home very quickly, and made a happy living hunting game and winning bar fights. Raolf is a seventh level ranger, who can track a man for a hundred miles. Ryle is a monk who's only ever killed two men. The pair is who the Pheonix Division turns to when a target needs to be found and brought back alive. They are also irish because of reasons.

6, Alton Merla, the sharpshooter.

He was born and raised among a group of bandits. When his sharp eye was discovered, he was tasked with silently dispatching those inbetween the clan and valuables. On a bonked mission involving some alchemists fire he ended up with shrapnel shot into his left eye. The gang left him for dead, and he joined the Pheonix division. The left eye is blind, and completely white, but he can shoot **** eyed just fine. 10th level rogue.

13. Annalist Drutnut Protacja - youn and fresh on replacing previous Annalist, rather inexperienced but brave, curious of the world and doing his job the best he can. Bard, possibly Loremaster.

19, 20 and 21 - Sisters Grugno, Hekletia, Demetrona and Wkurfrenia three terribly old women who have minor magic powers, specializing in specific kinds of spells. Hekletia is a standard wizard specialized in Illusions, she is using them to mess with people in their spare time. Dementrona is a witch and hr main function is to debuff whatever enemies gets from their wizards, she has perfect memory despite being terribly old even by halfing standards, she didn't seemd to forget anything, quite the opposite, her memory seems to getting sharper with age as she is willing to prove, telling thousands of stories from her life to those too slow or too stupid to run away. Wkurfrenia is a Summoner with ugliest Eindolon you can imagine, she specializes with tactical summoning - she doesn't just summon horde of monsters to get you, she summons horde of monsters to either hit you whre it hurts, in most tactically weak spot, or to provide serious distraction so others may hit you where it hurts, she is the youngest of them and most insubordinate - you let her be in one place for a day, she will get into several illegal bussinesses. Three sisters aren't great casters, they are quite good for their level, but nothing special. Thir main focus is to neutralize enemy wizards and pshychological warfare.

22. Perif Bogtrodder--An extremely arrant little hobbit. He spent most of his childhood being reprimanded for being either too focused on something of lesser importance, or lacking focus on the task at hand. A spry fighter with plenty of talent, he has a tendency to fixate on a single foe and pursue him across battle fields until he's disposed of, though he nearly as frequently finds himself flitting from enemy to enemy with abandon. Levels in rogue, fighter, and bard. Skill points in tumble and spot.

4: Lieutenant Pagash Snivilback: A cruel little bugger, Pagash has a little secret no one knows about: he's a Jerren, and a unrepentant one at that (BoVD generic evil halflings. Functionaly the same, but just evil.) Brought up in a cannible cult in the south, his entire family was slaughtered by the goblins that they where planning to consume the next day, and he was the only surviver. Well, thats because he shapeshifted into a goblin and fought alongside them. At first a ranger with a favored enemy against goblinoids, he's a druid of no little power. Joining this little band of plucky twits, being led along by one of the few beings he actualy likes (well, respects: this is not his first time being led along by a leader, and the last group he joined up with was actualy killed by him, but heck, they where idiots), has turned out to be quite the vacation. Ranger 6/Druid 5

15: "Littlefingers" : Is well known for being tiny, even for halflings. Small, plump, and rather cheery, she could pass for a well-paid barmaid if it where not for the assortment of scars on her face. All in all, she's the groups go-to-gal if a hard lock needs to be broken, making her the lock expert among a race known for lock-experts, magical or otherwise. While she is hardly weak in a fight, she's not exactly a fighter by heart, and none of those wounds came from a face-to-face duel. Does not use her real name, in case anyone who wishes to track her down finds the means too. Expert 4/Rouge 4

Oh my giddy aunt, do I have a few things to reply to! To start with, I want to reiterate how appreciative I am for your submissions. I will update the opening post with a more filled out list once I am through writing this reply. I'll go ahead and tackle these in order.

I've been found out!

Actually I forgot about Judeau. He's been dead for awhile now. But yes. This character is essentially Judeau. So forget it. I retract the submission.

Given how reference-happy my group gets, this submission will not need to be retracted at all. In fact, I don't think anyone will notice this one, to be perfectly honest...

7. Sgt Bergen.

Ranger 2/Fighter 2/Other full BaB 1/Cragtop Archer 5
-separation-
Theros, binder
Perhaps I should have clarified this in the opening post as well, but I was referring to the Pathfinder SRD, and (to my knowledge) both the Binder and the Cragtop Archer classes are only found in 3.5. I'll still accept these submissions, but forgive me as I adapt them to an available, but still thematically appropriate, class.

Is it spelled like this on purpose? The mystical bird bursting into flames is a phoenix. Just saying :).
How nice of you to point that out! Yes, that is intentional, and I shall explain. Our group is in the agreement that the Halfling language, while sharing the same script as Common, spells a number of words differently, much like how theater and theatre are the same. Hence, Pheonix.

4: Lieutenant Pagash Snivilback: A cruel little bugger, Pagash has a little secret no one knows about: he's a Jerren, and a unrepentant one at that (BoVD generic evil halflings. Functionaly the same, but just evil.)
While I like the idea of this character, and it would definitely bring some originality, I'll have to hold off on accepting it on account of one issue. Given that the Captain of this Division is, in fact, an evil-detecting Paladin, what reasoning would there be to keep this verifiably evil person in the group? If you can do that, I'll accept it :)

I think that about sums it up. I'll update the list with names, classes, and credit to the users who came up with them. For those of you who didn't give a specific level (or levels), I'll use my best judgment based on the makeup of the Division as a whole.

Pagash fights alongside him just as any other halfling in the group. He joined willingly, and honestly respects the guy. He has had plenty of attempts to knife him in the back, and every time he has had the chance to he fought off others who would try to. Why? Talyn is the most powerful person he knows, and he fights for the strongest side.

In a way, he's leaning hard over in the chaotic side of the spectram, and Talyn sees his weening off Evil to be a personal project of his. The only time he honestly commits evil acts now a days is againsts foes he is fighting, and the "other" halflings cannot tell when he is cruely tasting there foes organs and when he is taking bites out of his foes bodies in bear form.

As a summery, Talyn is aware of his devient past, and see's redeming a member of a race typicly seen as evil is a importent goal of his. And he is not exactly going off and stabbing random strangers for money. He only does that if he is paid to do it.

I will gladly accept that answer, and accept him into the spot :) Also, since number fifteen was already taken in a previous post, I took the liberty of sliding "Littlefingers" to 16. Shouldn't cause an issue, as these are by no means an order of ranking.

To fill in some of the last spots, how about a vague outline for some less inportant characters?

The beastmaster, the halfing who cares for the guilds riding dogs and ponies.

The lorekeeper, who knows the history of the divison better than anybody, and can tell a good story in the time it takes to drain two mugs.

The medic, who keeps the numbers of the division high. Probably a cleric.

Pokonic

Welp, lets fill in the twelve spot.

Daruang Gorthan is everything a halfling is not (supposed to be). He is broad, gruff, and has a beard as long as most of his kins torsos. The reason? He was born in a dwarven stronghold. Wears heavy armor, carries a warhammer in one hand and a axe in the other, he's that sort of "dwarf". Normaly, he rides his trained griffon mount, but otherwise he's the groups heavy weapons guy. You may laugh at him behind his back that he was the son of a thane who ran from his home and started to pretend to be a dwarf, but that will likely earn you a warhammer to the knee.
Fighter 5 / Warlord 4 (Or perhapes Fighter 4/Warlord 4/ Commoner 2)

12. Sam Thugdagger

Level 4 Barbarian

This class doesn't it halflings very well, so Sam is always rather frustrated. His strength is among the highest among the halflings, but he's still too small to be the war god he wants to be. Drinks a lot and has horrible manners. Uses a Greataxe and breastplate. Very good STR, good Con and DEX, weak WIS and INT. CHA is decent.

MrBanana,

Unfortunately for you, the 12 spot got taken by the post immediately prior to yours, so I'll have to give it to him. Secondly, while the 4 brief sentences used to describe his character would work, do you mind elaborating a little bit?

-EDIT-

Also, newBlazingAngel, we do have a cleric (though not specifically a "medic", persay..) and a lorekeeper (called Archivist) on the team, though I do think a beastmaster along with a quartermaster would be interesting :) food for thought.

Wow, I didn't think the idea of an NPC "bank" of sorts would catch on...a repository where users can flex their creative muscles and churn out character and NPC ideas for use, along with the ability to make requests...hmm...perhaps if pressed, one of us could start that up :)

Looks like the three spots are still open too....ah well, why not? I'll fill one!

18: Bombardier Lyrhana Emberboughs (Sorceress 6)

A (literally) fiery-tempered lass, Lyrhana was a sorceress descended from sorceresses, the burning flames of a fire elemental coursing through her veins. As such, her passion and impulsive nature would find herself in quite a bit of trouble throughout most normal society. Her abilities and knack for blowing things up were noticed one day by Captain Featherhair, enough to have him persuade her to join up in his company, her flames and spells only serving to befit the Pheonix Division's name.

24, The Loon.

Not much is known about him except for the fact that he just might be stark raving mad. The Loon is accepted because he's the life of the party. He can drain a dozen mugs, and that does nothing to slow him down. When he first joined, it was a very reluctant process. To test his meddle they put him as the front line on a defensive job, and against all odds, murdered everything that came his way.

Class: A drunken master?

That is also the perfect name, the NPC bank.

Hmmm.....

23. Allaurin Laveigh~Cavalier (emissary) of the order of the dragon 2: Allaurin Laveigh is the son of a noble human house. He was adopted at the age of two and grew with his sister Bethilde (who later took to a life of piracy and became the prodigial "black sheep"). From a young age he was fascinated with the role of knight and shining armor and took to the cavaliers college at the early age of fifteen. From there he spent several months with the dragons roost company but found it very dissatisfying due to several sessions of head-butting with another halfling, Beau Darby, a rogue who constantly disobeyed his orders. for months afterwards he tried freelance, which failed miserably, but eventually joined himself and his trusty mount scruffy up with a clan of halflings in the mercenary business and since then has found a sense of family he hadnt had since he left home.
