View Full Version : [3.5] How to cast a spell through something

Hello everyone!
I was wondering if there's a way to cast spells through a barrier without dealing damage to the barrier itself, especially a vehicle. Basically a "transwall spell".
I am aware of the existence of the Transdimensional Spell feat (CA), but that works only when the "barrier" is the Ethereal Plane or the Plane of Shadow.
So, do you know how to make spells "jump" physical barriers?

There's a metamagic feat in Cityscape (I think) which allows spells to originate from somewhere other than yourself. The image has it making a lightning bolt shoot out from the floor. You could use it to make the spell come from outside the vehicle rather than pass through it.

The feat is Deceptive Spell, unfortunately though:

You cannot use this feat to gain a bonus to hit, to circumvent cover, to flank, or in any other way to gain a numeric or mechanical advantage on any attack rolls.

Ah damn, scratch that then.

Aside from designing a little window into the side/front of your vehicle and sticking your finger through it to zap your spells off, I'm not aware of anything that fits the bill specifically.

I'm not sure, but I'm fairly certain there's a Shadowcaster Feat or ability that lets you do something of the sort (as long as there's some shadows around), but you'd have to check the Tome of Magic for the salient details and I'm pretty sure it's only for Shadowcasters.

This is actually a good idea! The vehicle I'm going to use is a beholder globe (from Dragon Magazine #331), and making a hole in the frontal glass to shoot enemies (a la Nicolas Cage, see spoiler) shouldn't be difficult :smallcool:
Thank you very much!

While it's not spells, you could probably convert Burrowing Power (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/psionicFeats.htm#burrowingPower) to a metamagic feat. Looks like it would be a +1 spell level adjustment.

As an extention to this, since there's a check involved with every boosted spell / power you try to cast, you could first cast Burrowed Project Image, to the other side of the barrier, and then have the image cast any further spells, negating the need for additional checks. Not sure if this would fit with your concept however.

What's Project Image?

It would be a +2 adjustment. Metapsionic powers have a PP cost 2 less than what their equivalent metamagic feats because of the requirement of expending your psionic focus.

No, Project Image wouldn't be as kickass as making a hole in my beholder globe. Therefore, I'll go for the simpliest (and coolest, so far) solution :smallcool:

Casting spells through plants (and treating them as the origin)? Oh yeah.

That could work. There's some wood material that counts as living, right?

Livewood, ECS, page 127. It costs x1.5 as much to make any wooden item out of Livewood as opposed to regular wood, though.

Unfortunately, Channel plant works only 2/day, which isn't very practical.
