Sorry if this is old hat, I remember this being something of a thing a while back but I haven't been on the forums for quite some time and didn't think to save any of the information. But hey! That should just mean this should be an easy inquiry then, right?

So yes, my brother (general newbie to D&D) is very fond of throwing hypothetical characters at me to see how easy I can put them together mechanically for the hypothetical time I actually get a game going for him, his favorite is some sort of barbarian that turns into a bear.

While I know it's not really a difficult thing to do, I do only know of two ways off hand; Bear Warriors and Werebears. I was wondering if anyone had better suggestions on pursuing this sort of thing.

I have access to Pathfinder as well as D&D, Pathfinder is actually what I'm usually more fond of using so if someone has something with the bear thing in that it would be a plus.

You could make a Druidic Avenger, from Unearthed Arcana. They get Rage and Wildshape, so that might work.

Honestly, though, Bear Warrior seems like a perfect fit.

A bearbearian thread without Bearington Bearman would be unbearable! (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140757)

You could also play a Shifter and go into Weretouched Master from the Eberron Campaign Setting. You could also take levels in the Primeval PrC from Frostburn and choose a bear form. A very inefficient method could be Barbarian/Wizard/Rage Mage/Master Transmogrifist.

As far as Pathfinder options go, the only one worth a look is the Bear Shaman (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/druid/archetypes/paizo---druid-archetypes/bear-shaman) Druid.

There is bearly anything else.

Well, in PF you could make a Synthesist Summoner and fluff the bio-suit you're wearing as being a bear. (You're supposed to fluff the eidolon's appearance to be something)

Seriously Bear Warrior from CWar is what you are looking for.

Yes, but you're not "really" a bear. Just something that looks kind of bear-like.
"The eidolon’s physical appearance is up to the summoner, but it always appears as some sort of fantastical creature. This control is not fine enough to make the eidolon appear like a specific creature."

Well, there's a branch of guardinals in Book of Exalted Deeds that look like scholarly grizzly bears. Have your eidolon suit resemble one of them. Whatever.

EDIT: Yeah, Ursinal.
