This is the 14th edition of the OotS quiz game.

Link to the 13th edition. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213552)

Quiz originally started by Hilbert, rules originally drafted by Forbiddenwar, and extended by various contributors.

Hello everyone!

I just had the idea of starting an oots quiz. There are hundreds -- alas, even thousands! -- of little interesting and/or funny details in the comics which you sometimes do not notice unless someone is poking your nose onto it. (: poke thog's what?)

The rules are plain simple. Someone asks a question that can be answered with (one or more) oots comic strips. (However, try to avoid boring counting questions...) Then people can try to answer it which should always include a link to the strip where you can see the answer. (Please do not write something like "Ah, that's A, you can see it somewhere between OOTS141 and OOTS200. Or maybe it was also a bit later, can't remember right now, but it's definately A.")
If still no one has a clue after after -say- 24 hours (maybe earlier) hints can be given. Whoever first gives the correct answer can ask the next question.

OK, 'nuff said, let's get it started! (: YAY!)

Oh, btw... it would be nice if people edited the link to the correct strip right next to the question once it has been answered. (Not the answer itself, just where you find it.)

Rules

1) The first player to answer a question correctly, asks the next one.

2) If that player doesn't have a question immediately in mind, then state "Open Question" ("OQ") and let someone else ask.

3) Questions have to have an answer that is demonstrated by at least one, and no more than three, canon online strip. (No bonus material either online or in the books)

4) No counting questions with more than 3 parts. For example: how many times has Roy said "the".

5) If the answer given is not the answer expected, but still technically answers the question, allow it. You can rephrase and ask your question again later.

6) there's a difference between rephrase - find a different, more precise way to word the question so it has a smaller number of possible answers - and just simply rewrite and rule out the last answer. Over and over again.

7) If an answer is given that in no way is correct, then players can call attention to the fact. At that point, there may be 2 questions occurring at the same time. The 1st question that was incorrectly answered is the valid question. The second question may be answered, but for no prize (aka asking the next question).

8) If your response is ninja'd, that is if someone beats you with the correct answer, please edit your post stating, "ninja'd, please answer above question".

9) After 24 hours without an answer, please provide a hint. After an additional 24 hours pass, please provide the answer and take pride that you have stumped us all.

10) Recognize that this is a game. It is supposed to be quick and fun. If a question seems to go beyond the rules, assume that the author is not familiar with the rules, and point them out. If the author affirms that the question is allowable within the rules, then continue with the game. If the question turns out to be not allowable, it becomes an open question. Groan and move on.

11) Questions along the lines of "when was the first time X happened/was mentioned" are not allowed because to prove that they never happened before, one would have to link to every strip before it, which is unreasonable and would break the no-more-than-three-strips rule.

Find me three rings in the same panel.

Do earrings count? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0648.html)

How about eyebrow rings? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0608.html) Because there are lots of options if they do.

If that is correct: Find me an example of a male character's hair (head, facial, or otherwise) changing color from one panel to the next.

Well, technically these (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0648.html)looks to be drawn more oval...

... But I don't think that is what you are looking for. Are we supposed to find it as a tone? (I mean, like three little background blue "ring"s written out?) Becuase those are the only definitions that I am aware of.

He could also be looking for boxing rings (or wrestling rings, or something...) or perhaps a 3-ring circus. Maybe even a parody of the Olympics symbol, if we've seen one. But I don't recall any of those things being in the comic, except for a singular wrestling ring for "Reanimated Gladiators" and the circus in Start of Darkness.

He uses that rapier again in the very next strip (and loses it again, if you count dropping it as he did in both strips as "losing it"). In fact, that's also what happens within the Tarquin fight - he is disarmed, and drops it - so unless that does actually count, it strikes me that the example with him fighting Tarquin shouldn't be counted either....

Show me visual evidence of a critical hit.

I'd make a case for Malack's Harm spell used on an unhurt Nale (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0811.html). Not only is the hit especially powerful (more so than, say, his fireball later on that hits but barely fazes Belkar), it shows an additional shade of black in the spell aura, which seems to be quite rare. Other instances of touch-spells from characters with black spell auras, even very powerful ones (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0659.html), show only a single shade of black when the spell hits. This could indeed be visual evidence of that 'extra d6', as it were. And, as with any good critical hit, the recipient show a measure of surprise when he actually survives it...

So, if you agree... Find three real-world product placements—parodies like Sanguine Ave and quirky misspellings like Teevo don’t count. (Apologies if something like this has been asked recently -- I've been away from the boards for a while!)

I invite people to try and answer your question, as it seems to be a good one, but no. In the example that I'm thinking of, something specific happens that only happens on a critical hit, and at no other time. You know for sure it's a crit without having to bring in any other evidence.

...although now that I think about it, my question requires some reasonably specific knowledge of DnD rules on the part of those trying to answer it. Is that beyond the purview of the quiz game?

Well, here's Diet Coke. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0031.html) So that's one.

Here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0562.html) are the 4th edition DnD books. So that's two. I won't count Redcloak's 3rd edition books, since "Real-world DnD books" can probably count as just one thing.

How about the Visa and Mastercard logos? (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0049.html) Do those count as products?

Do titles of posts count, or does it have to actually appear or be mentioned in panel?

I'd only count products that appear in panel, even when they're not discussed specifically (like the credit card logos). All those are good, though only one was one I was thinking of! Now, clue me in (again, coming back after a while) -- the rules are still that anything that answers the question satisfactorily is fine, even if it's not the specific instance that the asker has in mind? In any case, these are all legit. If anyone's looking for bonus points, there are at least two more... if not, carry on!

rgrekejin

Yup, those are pretty much the rules! I'll keep looking for things, but I'd like to repost my original question, so people don't have to scroll back up to find it:

Show me visual evidence of a critical hit. It is not in any way ambiguous that a crit has occurred, but it does require knowing a little something about how a certain magic item works, in-game.

I can see the corpse of Bandana paladin, and the guy with black hair.

I can't see the woman with the blue streak, or the guy with covered eyes. Presumably their corpses are off-panel.

It does indeed.

The one with covered eyes does appear--he's on the lower right. However, I don't see the one with black hair among the corpses; there's someone with similar hair, but different armor. (You can get a better look at her here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0449.html), second row down, third from the right.) Also, given that she and the one with the blue streak don't appear in any previous strips, I think that they were probably killed at a different time.

EDIT: The two don't appear alive at any previous point.
