View Full Version : Help nerfing homebrew character progression to fit with other players

Alright.

So I'm making a character for a PbP that's somewhat comically anime based, using a fairly large amount of homebrew, and I've inadvertantly made a character that's quite strong already, but will get ridiculously strong fairly quickly.

Link to the PbP recruitment thread here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246129).

The game is level 2 gestalt, and he's a Magical Boy Soul Shooter Archetype (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218981)//Otaku (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12370781&postcount=10). The character sheet is here (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=411969).

Math-like stuff/Examples as to why he is quite strong right now, and will only get more so:
Essentially, right now as a full action he can attack with a longbow twice at +3/+3, dealing 2d8 damage with each attack, half of that damage being force damage.

He has fairly average cleric spell list casting, having knowledge of 3 1st level spells which he can spend a 'spell level' to cast, he has four and a spell costs it's level: the example is that a 3rd level Fireball costs 3 spell levels to cast. He will get level 9 spells at level 18, although his spell selection is extremely limited. He'll be using this to buff and heal, but some buffs of course will apply to himself and make him stronger.

His power quickly escalates, however. Next level, he gains access to the burst illumination Luminous Rain: Luminous Rain [Burst]
Mote Cost: 1
Evocation Action: 1 Swift Action
Range: Short Range (25 + 5/two evoker levels ft.)
Duration: Instantaneous
Target: One Creature
Saving Throw: Will negates

The target of your attack is bathed with a pearly radiance by a blast of conjured rain, sharply illuminating critical openings in their fighting style. Allies (including you) receive a bonus against your target until the start of your next turn. You may select any of the following bonuses when you use this ability, but a single creature can only be subjected to one of them at a time.

+3 to attack rolls against the target
+3 to AC against attacks made by the target
+3 to damage rolls against the target
+3 to disarm, grapple, bull rush, or trip attacks made against the target. Using that, as long as his target fails a DC15 Will Save each round, he can cast that as a swift action then Full Attack, using the +3 attack rolls boost to make his attacks at +6/+6. At this point, his Otaku Signature move, which adds the force damage to the bow attacks increases by an extra die, so his attacks deal 3d8 damage.

To recap, at level 3 he will be attacking with two attacks at +6/+6 if his targets fail a reasonable will save, with 3d8 damage per attack that hits. He also has access to Bless, and also has Cure Light Wounds for emergency healing and Blood Wind (SpC p33) because there are two other characters using natural attacks at the moment.

At level 6, I *can* choose the Military Otaku II power:

Martial Arts/Military Otaku II: Prerequisites: Martial Arts/Military Otaku I. For a number of rounds per encounter equal to 1/2 your class level, your BAB equals your HD, and you deal extra damage with melee or ranged attacks equal to 1/2 your Otaku level. These rounds need not be spent consecutively.

That gives me a fighter's base attack bonus for three rounds at level 6 (admittedly with a standard action activation, which would hurt), which means at level 6 I'd have 3 attacks at +12/+12/+7, including the Luminous Rain bonus if they fail their save, each dealing 4d8 damage per hit, which becomes 5d8 the next level, and so on.

And with all this, I haven't even taken into account feat choices, or the bonuses that my magical girl costume can provide, which are powerful to say the least.
So, basically, I want to keep all the features and feel of what I have right now, while nerfing the numbers. I was considering swapping out Otaku for Favoured Soul, but that both stuffs up my character concept and, I think, got a bit MAD (even with Zen Archer).

Another thing that I considered was nerfing the Otaku Signature Move ability so that it only upgrades every second even level, rather than every even level, or halving the number of damage die that it adds to other attacks.

Here are some of the other characters that people have made (but not necessarily the ones chosen for the game), as well as links to necessary homebrew classes:Sakurada Raku (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=411243), Ozodrin (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=153536)//Magical Girl (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218981) (a.k.a. Sailor Cthulu)

AJ2 (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=410246), Combat Robo Girl//Dynamo Robo Girl (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=12618157#post12618157)

Aulo Kova'a (http://www.myth-weavers.com/sheetview.php?sheetid=412044), Hot Blooded Hero (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=12047548&postcount=7)//Magical Girl (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=218981)

For those from the game thread, these are just the first three that I picked randomly, or stuck in my mind for some reason, it's not that I don't like you characters
Anyway: What are your thoughts? Is this character OP, especially considering the other characters for the game? Any other suggestions for reducing the power, especially the power progression (I'm starting to think that he might not be in a horrible place at this level, he just gets stronger a lot faster) I haven't really looked at where the other characters will go from here, I just noticed that this seems to be an abnormally strong progression.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you might be able to give me!

The way I read Signature move, is that when used with ranged attacks, it eats a swift action, and adds damage to only 1 attack. So I *think* you would rapidshot 2 arrows for 1d8 each, and with a swift action can add 2d8 to one shot.

This prevents you from using Luminous Rain in the same round, which also consumes a swift, unless you have something granting you multiple swifts. Or am I reading something wrong somewhere?

That... fixes all my problems. No, you're reading it right, so far as I can see.

Well, that's that sorted. End of thread. I don't know what to say, I'm quite embarrassed

Thanks for the help!
