I'm going to be running an E6 game shortly, starting at 1st and have been considering a few NPCs that I might throw in if the players start to struggle (they're fairly new to the game and I'm running a prepublished adventure). So I don't outshine the PC's, I'm not looking at any uber-builds or anything and am obviously limited to 6th level, so one character I thought I might try is a UMD-Warlock; he's versatile, but limited by the gear he carries and won't outshine anyone in combat (also, being a sneaky warlock-type, I can have him turn up mysteriously at appropriate junctures and disappear just as easily!). However, I'm struggling to find resources to bump up his UMD skill.

So my question is this; what races, class features, feats or anything else will help bump up UMD?

So far, all I've got is the Skill Focus and Magical Aptitude feats!

there's a feat line which can get you that first-level truenamer utterance, universal aptitude, at 6th. feat's aren't scarce in e6, yes?

magic savant (CM) is bard 2, +4. if you could get 10 ranks, it would allow take 10, too, but can't -- you pretty much get that from warlock 4 anyway.

Tool, Masterwork (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/equipment/goodsAndServices.htm#toolMasterwork)
This well-made item is the perfect tool for the job. It grants a +2 circumstance bonus on a related skill check (if any). Bonuses provided by multiple masterwork items used toward the same skill check do not stack.

Give him an Item Familiar (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/itemFamiliars.htm) and he can add an unnamed bonus to a skill up to his number of ranks, so it's potentially a +9 to a given skill. He'd need to invest 27 skill points into it at levels 4-6, which means he'd need 9 skill points per level just to get the most out of that.

Make a custom item (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/creatingMagicItems.htm) which grants a Competence bonus to that skill, you can have up to +30 (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/magicItems/basics.htm) from a nonepic caster.

Give him Shape Soulmeld: Mage's Spectacles (when I opened the book to check the name, I opened to the exact page. Weird.), which will give him a +4 insight bonus, or +6 if he has a point of essentia to invest (perhaps by being an azurin, who get a bonus feat anyway).

Have a high charisma. Dip Marshal for 1 level and take motivate charisma aura. You now add double cha modifier to checks. So w/ cha 18, you have a +8. Take Nymph's Kiss at level 1 if the character is good aligned. That's another +2, along with bonus skill points and a save bonus.

So... 9 ranks, +4 charisma (x2), and NK for +2 puts you up to +19, that's enough to never fail on a wand.
