Has anyone else noticed that the azurite wizard from this comic (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0366.html) mentions that he could become a baker? Is this possibly a reference to Vaarsuvius' mate?

...I really don't see how. The only commonality is that the word "baker" is somehow related to both.

...by the way, I secretly hoped, throughout the Kickstarter drive, that one of the Backer's PDFs would be about the drunken Azurite wizard. He is my favorite minor character, and I would have loved that. Not that any of you cared to know...

I'm thinking that that was a one-off gag, but if it wasn't, then it might be a reference to the Giant's mortal enemy, Keith Baker.

Considering they were in Cliffport, which I believe is a parody on the Eberron setting which Keith Baker created, that's not unlikely.

...hold the phone.

You're telling me Cliffport is a parody of EBERRON?

I never caught that the first (or the second, or third, or seventeenth...) time! I really don't know that much about Eberron, so I never would have noticed. If that's true, I that's totally brilliant. I love how deeply referential Rich can be from time to time.

V and Durkon's banter's a dead ringer for the most common criticisms of Eberron. (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0344.html) It's a very magitek/steampunk heavy setting, often contrasted with WotC's more popular high fantasy settings, like Greyhawk, Dragonlance, and Forgotten Realms.

It's probably an inside joke from one of the author's D&D campaigns where someone played a wizard who secretly wanted to be a baker all along. V's mate was this character realized - not a wizard at all, despite expectations that she would be.

Maybe it's foreshadowing of Inkyrius' eventual spiral into depression and alcoholism in his/her struggle to cope with the trauma of the dragon attack and his/her grief over the divorce. Maybe.

and his/her grief over the divorce. Maybe.
What grief? V's level of neglect for I bordered on abuse.

That's brilliant! And then Inky decides that the only way is to put baker behind and becomes a wizard too. And then becomes the new main wizard of the LG once Z bites the dust again. Then they have a big wizard fight which only ends when they both realise that they still love each other and make out.

What?

Oh sure, V was a terrible partner and I was more than justified in suing for divorce. But that doesn't mean that I didn't (and doesn't) have feelings for V regardless of his/her awfulness and wouldn't still be saddened that the relationship ended the way it did.

But I shouldn't really try to justify that, I was just groping for any tenuous reason I could find to make a flippant remark.

How about this?

I think he got over it! He even put a shifter, warforged for spring minis.

it will never happen, but i like it.
I would especially like to see V's reaction after learning that I got 15 wizard leves overnight just by picking V as personal nemesis

Slightly OT, but I just noticed this parallel:

Has anyone played the WoTC adventure "Something's Cooking"? It's based around a powerful wizard and her husband, a master baker. They try to make a calzone golem and it goes horribly wrong.

Does anyone know if this came before or after Kyrie was added to OOTS?

According to this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/oa/20010413a), Something's Cooking came out around 2001. The FAQ (http://www.giantitp.com/FAQ.html) states that Giant purposely avoids copying other peoples ideas, so its probably just an unlikely coincidence

My players still haven't forgiven me for pitting them against a "giant hotpocket" as they put it.

My players nearly killed me when I siced a candy bar golem on them at holloween:smallbiggrin:

Or the Warforged with a sack of explosives for christmass (In my defence, Robosanta is awesome)

Or the Doom Pug. That was funny. They all failed the Death urges saving throws:smallbiggrin:

Is this a reference to the viz's drunk bakers as well, or am I just reading into it what I want to read into it?

We've had not one but TWO threads on this theory, which seems based on the notion that all references to bakers are references to Inkyrius for some inexplicable reason, as if he (?) were the lone baker in the universe? :smalleek:

Yes, it was quite delightful. It was the only published adventure I ever used in my campaign!

I'm somewhat astonished that other people still remember it. What a blast from the past.

This:

Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar. Sometimes, characters that have a similar hairstyle just have a similar hairstyle. Not everything in the comic has a hidden meaning.
Not all bakers in the world are related. Unless there's an underground Baker's Guild that we're not aware of.

There is no Baker's Guild, citizen. I will go back to my fun.
