As I was perusing the Epic Level Handbook, I read in the Epic Druid section that a druid may have a maximum number of animal companions equal to twice his level. I was wondering how this would effect the abilities of animal companions. Would they all be at the same level as a single companion would, or would they have only a fraction of their abilities?

Epic Level Handbook is 3.0, where animal companions worked completely differently.

This has caused a handful of problems with our group too... It usually feels easier to take the Packlord (Pack Master?) Prestige class for multiple animal companions...

Epic Druid was updated to 3.5 (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/classProgressions.htm#epicDruid) (official link (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35)), you no longer get multiple animal companions.

You can take Wild Cohort (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031118a) to get another companion.

If you just want a crowd of animal friends, Handle Animal (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/handleAnimal.htm) or Awaken (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm) can accomplish that but they won't necessarily be useful for accompanying you on adventures.
