IC Thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=248356)

A Fire Emblem Game with a twist.

Not only has the magic system been totally revamped (and probably broken as all hell), the goals here are a bit different than your standard game. In addition to your standard "Kill everything" and "Place Lord Here" maps, there's going to be a couple of maps where your goals are more suitable for a Zombie Apocalypse: Scavenge. Survive. Burn ALL the things.

If you were directed here from the link in my signature, the rules can be found Here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=264100). Create your character, post him/her here, and once approved, s/he will be added to the waiting list. Please don't let mechanics stop you from making an interesting character concept. We can probably work something out if you speak up.

The players are free to exploit any aspect of the game. Just note that once you do, I am free to do so as well. :belkar:

Not really sure if I need a backstory. I guess it'll be along the lines of, "Adel wanted to be a JRPG hero, so he went to grind out some rats for EXP, but suddenly - ZOMBIES!".

Description

AGE: 16

Short and slender, with black hair and blue eyes. Colver also has a prominent nose and usually a grumpy look on his face.

Personality
Affinity: WATER
Colver is usually a very serious young man. He throws himself into any task he undertakes with vigor and an intensity that is sometimes off-putting. He has a dark sense of humor, and is usually quiet. However, he is quick to help those in need and never begrudges anyone a favor.

Background
Colver was raised as an orphan in a monastery near his home village. His parents were notorious bandits that terrorized the valley where he lived until they were cut down by a troop of soldiers. He showed a natural aptitude for magic since a young age and was tutored in it by the older monks. When the rumors of a monster assault came to the monastery, Colver leapt at the chance to prove he was unlike his parents.

Repost from Interest Thread

EDIT: Are we going to start making a plan right now? If so, I would like to start on R20. Unless I'm not in the game yet.

Duke is a no-nonsense professional, he takes pride in his work, and measures others by the work they do. A very gruff sort, Duke can come off as abrasive. He doesn't mean any harm by it though, and judges himself just as harshly as he does others- if not more.

Background:

Duke was a simple blacksmith before the zombie uprising. He worked tirelessly every day crafting tools, farming implements, nails and horseshoes. As rumors started coming in of strange monsters, Duke took up a new trade, forging weapons and armor.
Now he stands in defense of his homeland, in equipment he forged himself. If you can't live by your work, you'll have to die by it.

I'm doing the first five characters on the list: Shannon, Adel, Corvis, Colver, and Alberich. (Zelt's guy doesn't even have a name, so I'm pushing him back until he's done)

However, Penguinator's power is out and Illven's away for a bit, so I'm waiting for them to come back, but until then, you can come up with a plan.

Shannon used to be a nice girl, full of love for her goddess and community. Then everything changed when the zombies attacked. Although Shannon managed to survive the initial assault fate has decided to team all up with a bunch of mental cases, the stress of leading this group has caused Shannon to snap at things she would normally let go.

Welcome back! Any plans? (I've cribbed got a sprite for Alberich from Penguinator's game. It'll go up when his move is declared).

Sairyu
2012-07-04, 11:50 AM
Shannon P19 -> N24
Alberich P18 -> O12
Adel P20 -> L19 [visit]
Corvis R18 -> S18
Colver R19 -> S19

----------

Corvis and Colver will try to slow down anything attacking the walls and will Vulnerary up if they're in danger of death. For now, they'll just build up support. I want them next to the wall so they eat a javelin next round instead of the wall taking the hit.

Everyone else starts visiting houses. There are a lot of them, so we might as well get started now and at least try to reach goal #2.

I'm not sure what to do with the shops yet, since we don't have any cash and I have no clue what they're selling (probably just iron X and basic items). I expect we'll get some cash from the houses or as monster drops, which we can then convert into Vulneraries/equipment as needed.

On another note, what's the HP/def of the crumbling walls, how does the evac (of houses - do we need to do the shops too?) work, and can we open the north/south (no really just the north) gate from the inside without a key?

Elricaltovilla

Proposed plan:

1.Colver starts R20, move to S19. Wait.
EDIT:
2. Corvis start R19, move to S18. Wind Buff Colver (+5 SPD).
3. Shannon start P19, move to L19. Visit.
4. Adel start P18, move to M16. Wait.
5. Alberich start P20, move to L24. Wait.

So the basic plan is to have both the mages (who I know for sure hit through walls) move to guard the broken wall and attack the enemy before they can break through it (this will be next turn). Meanwhile we have our other three characters moving towards the houses to visit them and hopefully rescue some villagers and stuff. Alberich will be moving along the south wall because I don't remember if bows are able to shoot through walls or not, but if they do it gives us another free attack. The problem of course is that it also spreads us kind of thin.

EDIT: Ok, I made a slight change. Having Corvis buff Colver means that Colver can make 2 attacks against Skeleton 2 next round and Corvis can double attack Skeleton 1 next round. It only costs 1 DUR, and the buff is significant.

Plan Goals:
Alberich visits bottom row of houses, defends southern wall.
Shannon visits middle 2 rows of houses, provides emergency healing for Alberich and Adel
Corvis protects broken wall, buffs Colver
Colver protects broken wall, heals Corvis

Makes sense? Too much detail?

"BAHAHAHAHA!! I love this part! If only you zombies screamed more when I killed you!"

Personality: "Glaive" is a bit of a maniac, and the zombie apocalypse has given him an excuse to violently end existences without repercussion, which to his mind is the ideal world. Due to his lust for violence, his relationships with less insane people are often short lived, normal people often find him a little abrasive.

History: Once the prince to a kingdom, he has since fallen out of such noble ways. He used to be a rather normal person, but everyone changes when the world does, he even dropped his old name, and usually calls himself something equally violent as he.

(Zelt's guy doesn't even have a name, so I'm pushing him back until he's done)

I guess I'll go ahead and throw my support behind Sairyu's plan. It hits all the same points mine does, so it doesn't matter much. And only the Javelin Skeleton is going to be able to hit the wall first turn anyway. So it'd be better to wait until turn 2 for Corvis to buff Colver.

But I want to know how to escape, and where are the horses?

Plan:

1. Colver: Wait.
2. Corvis: Buff Colver.
3. Shannon: N24 -> L23. Visit
4. Adel: L19 -> H20. Wait.
5. Alberich: O12 -> L11. Visit.

I think Corvis should Buff Colver to build up support points and allow Colver to double either of the closest skeletons. Then next turn, Corvis can attack whichever one is left (provided they are within range) and if he takes damage, Colver can heal him.

Everyone else should focus on Visiting houses. If one of the Villagers moves close enough, then talk to them (especially the bard).

EDIT: Oh and in case you missed it, Colver is WATER affinity.

Most Civilians are going to head for the North exit by default, but some (like Civilian 3) are going to think of their fellow man and try to help you evacuate the rest of the village. You'll only get loot/prizes from houses that the group has personally evacuated, but you get your bonuses for the Optional missions no matter what.

Also, you seem to be forgetting that Shannon and Alberich can Canto.

You're right, I did forget Canto. Because I'm silly. I'll edit the plan accordingly.

Plan:

1. Colver: Wait.
2. Corvis: Buff Colver.
3. Shannon: N24 -> L23. Visit. (Canto) L23 -> I24.

Those walls have a ludicrous amount of HP/def. Let's just pull everyone off of it and evac asap. That said:

Shannon to L23 [visit] and canto to I24
Alberich to L11 [visit] and canto to J12
Colver to Q17 [visit]
Corvis to S13
Adel to H20

Reasoning:

The Javelin skeleton with 11ATT did 2 damage to it (the wall), meaning it has 9def. In comparisson, the Iron Lance skeleton has 3STR, so it'll do 1 (3+7-1) damage and the highest ATT enemies (5STR+Lance // 4STR+Axe) have 12ATT and will do 3 damage.

At 50HP per section (unless all the crumbling walls share the same HP total, and even then...), we have (at least) 5+ rounds to do whatever we feel like. Personally I like getting rewards. A lot.

Even if they get through, we'll be far enough that if we haven't gotten away yet, we can just do a fighting retreat between buildings (so we can't get swarmed to death) until Shannon escapes.

Illven
2012-07-06, 10:25 AM
I agree with Sairyu's plan, we can fight if we want to after we get the civilans out.

John Cribati
2012-07-06, 10:49 AM
Both plans have Shannon, Alberich and Adel doing the same thing, so they'll go into effect once I get home, unless the players say otherwise. Colver's player wants him at the wall, so unless he changes his mind, he'll stay there. The jury's out on Corvis, though.

I wouldn't worry about getting xp here, either. You'll be getting swarms of weak (25 stat point) enemies for the first few maps. After map 3 or 4, theyll be built with the party's average stat point total. They'll get gradually stronger after that, but none of the mooks will ever have more than 10 stat points over the player with the highest stat total.

ZeltArruin

It would have been fun to see "Glaive" evacuate people, though I'd imagine he would shunt his orders in favor of violence. Oh well, them's the breaks for being lazy.

I suppose I can do it, although it should be people with more CON than that(for rescuing purposes). I think we need to keep the two mounted characters as mobile as possible, since they have the easiest time getting to the houses.

Congrats on visiting the Inn. The Toshi Brigade was going to show up Next map, but you unlocked them early. Usually, the Hidden Objective (If there is any) will be better... hidden.

After each Map in which you choose to deploy The Toshi Brigade (chosen at start of the map), each member gains five Stat points, assigned and allotted by player consensus. They'll die permanently if they fall (PCs will only die permanently if they Turn into Zombies), but in exchange for not leveling them up, you can add a member to the Brigade, at the current level. You can also Trade Stat points to get them new Tomes- 1 for an E Tome, 5 for an A Tome. I'm not sure how they get them... let's just say they make the tomes from scavenged pieces of paper they find, and imbue them with magic in some ritual or other.
And yes, you can trade with them for Tomes if you want.

Colver Q17 -> N17.
Corvis S13 -> R9.
Adel H20 -> G19. VISIT.
Alberich J12 -> G15. VISIT.

Just a continuation of the plan from last turn. I think we've got a good chance at visiting every single house right now. My only concern is that the Toshi Brigade might decide to be stupid. They are AI controlled after all. :smallwink:

EDIT: Toshi Brigade Monk 3 is now officially named Bob. Because I can. (Unless I can't)

On a more serious note, next map the Toshi Brigade will each gain 5 stat points yes?

Appearance:A dark haired girl with green eyes and an easy smile. May is a bit on the short side and has a lithe, slender build.

Personality:Friendly and easygoing, May has a powerful sense of curiosity that leads her to always be full of questions. Given her complete lack of combat ability, some might consider her to be a bit reckless, but growing up in a family with five brothers has led her to be rather fearless, and quite tough to boot.

Background:May grew up in a large town, the second youngest of six and the only girl. Growing up roughhousing with her brothers made her tough, and she always found herself entertaining the family with her acrobatics. With a small talent for magic, though not enough to actually cast any real spells, May found that her dance began to invigorate those around her, and practiced the talent to the level it is at today.

Just posting my sheet, I'll keep an eye on things for when I join. :smalltongue:

Lets get some bolting tomes. I love those suckers and don't even care that we can't use them yet.

Maybe +stats for 2 maps then start adding guys? Depends on the maps/general availibility of tomes though. For now, they're strong enough to keep the wall safe, so our scenario will continue to proceed nicely.

Honestly, we could probably just use them to farm tomes. An A-rank tome is worth 6 000 gold so... sells for 3 000; 3 000 x 4 = 12 000, meaning we won't be hurting for money anytime soon. I don't think we even need to boost their stats yet, since they were supposed to come in next map anyways (and seem to be stated for that). At any rate I'm not enamoured with NPCs that'll steal our EXP.

Personally, I'd say to get some E and D-rank tomes for the next map (so our casters are a step up on the competition) and then add +3 stats to each one (hp/def/res to mitigate random deaths?). Then we can go into whichever farming/power-up strategy we like.

Otherwise... unless something horrible pops up all of a sudden, we'll be ending Map #1 within 6 turns*. If the NPCs keep buffing the wall (I didn't even know that was a thing), it'll never die. Without buffs, it'll still take 5+ more turns to break it down, meaning that we ride off into the sunset as soon as it crumbles.

*assuming the door opens freely from the inside and that only Shannon needs to reach reach the red 'run-away' boxes to complete the main objective. Things would go faster if the NPC bard would boost us, but hey, whatever.

I say we spend the first map using all their points to boost defensive stats (HP, DEF, RES), then the next map get some A rank tomes to sell (provided we have a shop there we can sell them to). We don't have too much to worry about right now. The enemies are only 25 point build, and if everything goes to plan, none of us will even have to waste a single weapon DUR.

Alright then. I'll update tomorrow afternoon.

Also, I'm going out of the country in 5 days. I'll have intermittent internet access, and on days that I do have access, I'll be on practically all day anyway. Furthermore, I have all the files I need to make maps on a portable drive. So I should be able to get in at least one update per week if things go well. Jamaica has some issues with power outages, though, so call on whichever deity you choose.

I'm good with the plan. I notice that the mysteriously cloaked guy has no stats, so I'm guessing that's nothing good. Still, we should be fine for another 2 or 3 rounds (unless it has, like, a Bolting tome). Ideally those NPCs on the wall should be retreating, but... whatever.

Backstory
One day, Drax died while protecting a caravan from a zombie attack. The next day, he got up and began shuffling around as if he owned the place. Something was wrong, however - as he shuffled, more and more memories came back to him! Drax isn't really sure how or why this happened, only that he is a zombie and yet still possesses his mind. Personally, he'd rather be a vampire.

Spd: 8/60%

Def: 7/50%

History:
Legends tell of a famous Witch Hunter. He comes into towns, locates magic users, watches them for days, and then they are never seen again. They aren't sure of his name, or even what he looks like, but the legends say that he came from the mouth of hell itself, a minion of the devil whom these witches sold their souls to, come to collect their dues for his evil master.

Personality:
Cold and aloof, Alberich doesn't get close to people, especially magic users. He despises magic users, especially those which would reanimate dead with their magic. He thinks that magic is the scourge of the world and seeks to eliminate those who would abuse its power. His weaknesses are gambling and pretty faces. He's also more accepting of children than of adults. Lawful Neutral, mid-thirties.

Backstory:
Alberich was born to a small family. His mother was a kindly healer, while his father was a brave paladin. When he was young, his father was killed in battle. His mother fell ill from grief and passed shortly after. He was left with an aunt, a witch. After growing up with her and seeing what horrible things she could conjure, he gained a distaste for magic. After watching her and a coven of witches raise the dead and slaughter an entire village, he swore to destroy all who would use magic so cruelly.

We can control NPCs? Oh well, nothing we can do about it at this point.

I'm not too torn up about losing them, so long as Toshi doesn't die we'll eventually cobble together enough EXP to exchange for tomes (gold).

I'd actually have Shannon move up and get Adel to visit B19. This gets her to the evac. point a turn earlier and hopefully ends the map. Adel can hitch a ride with Alberich if it turns out that all players need to evac.

Adel visits the Home at B19

John Cribati
2012-09-11, 02:52 PM
And updatey-date.

The Food system is gonna be important, because thanks to the Zombies everywhere, Gold isn't really gonna be as important as food and medicine. IE, at some point, your gold will be borderline useless, and a barter-type system is going to come into play.

And you can't really say you had food at the start of the map, at least, not enough for everyone; the stop is for supplies, after all :belkar:.

Now who wants to help me work out the food usage per character per day? All I can gather is that a Low Con unit wouldn't need as much food as High Coin Unit, since Constitution comes into play more often as how heavy a character is, rather than how strong.

Then there's taking into account the food for the mounts. Just by looking at it, Wyvern> Hellbeast >=Pegasus>Horse in terms of how much each would eat, right?

Discuss.

John Cribati

Ah okay. I think we should balance it out, by how long you want the food to list.

Also what is a unit of food?

Yay, now I get to spend three days figuring out how to not-break a mechanic I just thought of!

Originally, I figured a unit would be some ~vaguely defined~ amount of food that the average person eats on a daily basis.

But it would make things a lot easier if a Unit was 500 Calories instead of "A days' worth."

So with that in mind, since we had 50 Days worth initially and assuming a 2,000 Calorie average, that would be 100,000 Calories worth of food. Then with the new conversion rate, that makes it 200 Units. Makes things a bit easier.

I'm officially declaring that Average CON between 6 and 8. So you need 4 Units of food, -1 for every point of Con below 6, or +1 for every point above 8. So playing a Low-Con Character helps logistically, but not so much in battle.

Now to work out the rates for the animals. Any ideas? I know that Wyverns and Probably Hellbeasts would be carnivorous, and Horses and Pegasi would find grass to eat, occasionally. A Wyvern is basically "bulkier Pegasus," so it makes sense that a Wyvern needs more than a Pegasus. Pegasus is "Horse with Wings" so they'd need more than a horse.

So where does Hellbeast fit? It's more or less "Skinny Horse With more Move," so it wouldn't need as much as a horse, but at the same time, they're carnivorous like Wyverns, so they'd logically need more than a horse.

Thoughts?

ZeltArruin

This food system horribly disincentives my character. Average should be 8-10, because mercenaries, the average man, are usually in that range. Also, I think half more for each point away from there would be better, rounding up because whatever. Ridden creatures, to again not penalize people for playing a class, should be an additional 1-2. I mean, this is fire emblem, and we are facing zombies, is the goal realism or balance?

Technically speaking, It's already put at 1/4 more per point, assuming a 4-Units-per-day average, though I guess making 8 Con the average makes more sense.

And screw it, Horses and Pegasuses find Grass somewhere, and Wyverns and Hellbeasts eat the dead bodies. These are Magical Zombies, not Biological ones, so it's safe.

And while I'm here, Wyverns are Weak to Ice Magic because Lizards and cold blood and stuff makes more sense. Since Hellbeasts were originally weak to Ice, they take the Wyvern's Lightning weakness instead.

As per the realism thing... Kind of? I mean, when the Zombies come to town and start wrecking everything, people are going to care more directly about survival. They're not going to go buy food from the store, they're going to loot it. And then once people start getting cut up and stuff, they're gonna need Vulneraries just to stay alive, most times, so the "cost" of a Vulnerary is pretty much going to skyrocket, nudge nudge wink wink.

Shannon moves to D8
Alberich moves to D12
Adel moves to D18

Adel can't actually move to E18 (it's 6 squares away). Otherwise this gets Shannon to the evac area quicker. If you're concerned about civilians escaping, any civilian spawns from that house will reach the evac point at the same time as the civilians from the B19 house, if not sooner.

Query: Do we need to wait for all civilians to evacuate before ending the map, or is it going to be enough that they're out of their houses? I get the feeling that it's the former... Well, if it is, we might as well just go with Illven's plan, since there's no point trying to rush Shannon over.

About food units/day, how does that translate into battle maps; do we need to consume additional food/round, or is it going to be an off-screen thing? If we need to eat during battle, well...

@YayYak: HP growth is worth twice as much as you pay; you've still got 30% more growths to add, unless you're saying you want 120% HP Growth, which is overkill and I'd advise you to change it anyway. Trust me, anything more than 70% HP growth is unnecessary.

I think we're looking for a yes from you, actually.

And while I'm here, If hunt doesn't show up before map 2 is ready, Corvis is going onto a secondary Waiting list, along with Alberich (Penguinator says he's not exactly ready to join, yet, but I didn't want to just poof him away and replace him with Glaive). In either case, both Glaive and May are going to be in Map 2, and depending on whether Corvis is still MIA, Duke could possibly get recruited as well.

Actually, if we could retcon so that Alberich wasn't there, and he gets recruited the next map, that would be great. I've almost finished his portrait.

Edit: That being said, his characterization borrows heavily from Joshua, which is why having him as a recruited (preferably enemy, but he could be neutral, I don't care) unit is preferable. I have no in-character reason for him to begin with a party, as he has always worked solo before.

It's a changeling!

John Doe visits the house at [B11], completing the optional objectives, and then cantos to wherever [D11].

Everyone else just moves towards the evac tiles as far as they can.

Adel moves to [E12] and takes John Doe's stuff (trades for Bow & Vulnerary)
Shannon moves to [H5]
Colver moves to [N9] and heals Bob [O9]
Corvis moves to [N8] and gives Colver some moral support*

Assuming those villagers are in the 6-10CON range, we're going to go through our stock real fast. Let's see:
Our party consumes... 11 [food] per day +3 if we include Alberich/John Doe
The Toshi Brigade consumes... 12 [food] per day
There are currently... 18 NPCs (9 on map, 9 escaped). I expect two more to file out of the last house, just to make it a round number. If I assume an average CON of 7, or, 3 [food] per day, that's an estmated 60 [food] per day for non-contributing NPCs.
Totaled up, that's ~86 [food] per day.

So, that 200 [food] will last us about 2.3 days (7 'normal' meals) before we have to play the hunger game/s. Hopefully they brought some supplies of their own, but I wouldn't count too much on it; 2.3 days worth of food (for ~30 people) is actually quite a bit more than I'd expect to be able to bring out of a village in such a rushed timeframe.

With half-rations, I think we could stretch it out to 5-6 days with no particularly terrible effects, so we're not too screwed here.

.
.
.

... Or we can kill them all and not have to worry about logistics for a while starve to death. :smallfurious:

If I were the DM though, I'd start to make [food] spoil after a certain amount of time, just because. So tradeoffs, I guess.

----------

Edit: Which brings us back to the topic of hunger penalties: what are they?

Alba "the Owl" Tyto, Survivalist [Thief (Bow)]

"There's two types of people in this world; those who are prepared for anything just like myself, and those who are too foolish and naive to do the same. These days, I have to keep putting down the rotting husks of the latter."

{table]Stat|Points|Growth

DEF|2|35
RES|2|35[/table]
CON: 7

Special: Trick Arrows

Appearance

Not many people alive know what "the Owl" looks like, for a very good reason. This is because Alba Tyto takes the utmost pains to remain unseen in his hunting grounds; he almost always wears a dark green hood and cape, in which he has stuck a great deal of leaves and shrubs. Such a getup would make him look silly anywhere else, but in the leafy woods where his territory is? The only sign you'd see of him is the arrow which he just put between your eyes.

For the few whom Alba has consented to see his face (and there are few indeed), "the Owl" is a lean and grizzled outdoorsman with pale skin, silver-gray hair, and an unshaven face. Most intriguing of all are his striking golden-yellow eyes which have earned him the moniker, apart from the unusually keen eyesight which have made him a deadly sharpshooter.

Personality

Ever paranoid about every possible threat around the corner, Alba hates committing to anything unless he has at least two escape plans should things go awry. "The Owl" would just as soon shoot any undead as look at them, and even to unturned living humans, he is curt and sharp with his tongue, holding them in contempt for their 'lethal ignorance' of survival strategies, as he perceives it. Not exactly the most personable individual around; it is very possible that his loner nature is what drove him to his paranoid survivalist mindset, or perhaps it is the other way around.

Background

A paranoid survivalist to the core, Alba always knew that the world would go to hell in a hurry any time now, and has spent a lifetime preparing for the day civilization would collapse. To that effect, he has constructed his own personal bolthole in a grotto out in the woods, stocked with enough hardtack, salted jerky, water supplies and hunting equipment to last him a while. This has earned him a fair amount of ridicule in the past, but "the Owl" couldn't care less about the ignorant opinions of city-slickers.

Then the zombie apocalypse happened, validating his paranoia. Escaping to the bolthole he had painstakingly built while the wave of undead threatened everything, today Alba spends his days drawing water, hunting and gathering food to replenish his stocks, and taking down any stray undead which happened upon his part of the woods.

_______________________________

On that note, depending on what Herp wants to do for Alba's recruitment, it could possibly be a boon for the party, if only because his bolt hole will have stocks of hard tack, which should boost the stocks a little.

I wonder whether I should ask Herp to give Alba a 'Hunting' passive Special as well; every turn, he has a chance to meet a Random Encounter of a wild game animal which he can attack, and if successful will net the party a small increase in food supplies.

I'd personally like more party members (from the next map) sooner.

Taking 1-2 shots isn't a notable EXP gain (~20 EXP) and getting in range for >1 shot pretty much means getting swarmed down.

Besides, the only people in range are Colver & Corvis. Colver is already going to get EXP for buffing and Corvis' PC is MIA and probably not going to be joining us for map 2+, making grinding EXP on him unattractive.

I haven't heard from hunt since August. In any case, we'll recruit him again if he ever shows up. For now, Corvis is going off with the villagers you rescued.

Anansi's Guile is a Dancer/Bard item that opens doors and chests.

I'm pretty sure that healing is just 10+MAG for heal and 20+MAG for mend. I'll go check Herp's google-doc and see if he's changed it in the mechanics section though.

Well in Fe 7+8. Mag is used for healing staffs (Magic+x depending on the staffs), the range of staffs like Psychic, Fortify, (1-Mag/2) and staff accuracy (30+(Magicx5)+Skill)

The only time I've ever seen magic been halved, is to determine a staff's range. Not what it does.

Shadow Dragon also had a Warp Staff that worked on the whole entire map. Good times :smallbiggrin:.

I could change the Healing Formula if you want; It's not going to have that much of an effect at lower levels (Shannon is gonna be one-shotting everything for a fair bit still), but the thing is that the Heal Staff is essentially a 10-Might tome against Zombies, so a Harm Staff will act accordingly when used against you.

And that's terrible.

So should I whip out the Nerf Bat or do you want to take your chances?

While I observed the whole conversation about this, at the time, I had no opinion, but now, I think I do. I think it's ridiculous. I know there has been no fire emblem game where you can deal damage with staves directly like this, and that not withstanding, I think it goes against the spirit of the game to have that kind of stuff in it. We don't know for sure what healing staves actually do, and positive/negative energy aren't usually a thing in fire emblem. That being said, adding that kind of ruling to a homebrew, such as this, can be made to fit in.

Part of the problem is exactly what we observe here, if staves are allowed to deal damage to undead, and then in turn undead get their own sticks to unheal us with, that's going to cause lots of problems on both sides, tactically, and otherwise. The arguments for it, as far as I know are thus: it follows dnd rules; it's something new and different; it's fun. While I can understand all three of those, I really, really think that this change is going to get out of control without coming up with a new set of rules for staff interactions. I know that staves can't retaliate, but still, attacking undead priests is going to be a death sentence, oddly enough.

So, what do we gain from adding this? Increased mortality rate against undead healers, our own healers becoming our go to means of killing undead, fun(?), and a tactical struggle when dealing with more advanced undeads. I understand and accept that throwing tactical challenges at us is all part of the game, but I feel like this one is kind of unnecessary.

tl;dr a whole lot saying I don't like it.

I agree with healing as a 10+Mag. But yes, attacking with a heal staff should be like, Mt of 1 or 2, depending on whether or not it affects Resistance.

Also, if something is in "zombification" status, a heal staff would work as normal, yes?

Sairyu
2012-09-28, 04:55 PM
Why don't you divide staff mt by 1.5/2 (and make RES reduce damage) and use staff acr%? Maybe reduce the scaling of MAG on ACR%, something like:

150 target ACR at 30MAG/30SKL; base 60%

ACR% = 60+2*mag+skl - enemy res*3

Then you divide mt by 1.5 (heal) and 2.0 (mend) and reduced by RES, so your heal staff becomes a 6mt tome and the mend staff becomes a 10mt tome (both of which are less accurate than normal tomes).

Edit: healing stays as normal, this is just for the theoretical weaponization of healing staves

... Keep the regular formula for status (ranged) staves I guess. Not sure exactly what to do with Psychic, but oh well.

Sorry the updating took so long. The Tiled file for Map 2 broke because I had to wipe my hard drive (all the other files are safe, don't worry), and the directory where the tileset is broke. So the map looks a bit different because I had to remake it and stuff.

This is the new map: same spawn rules and stuff.

Also, you can use this as the official "Battle Preparations" screen.

That was a lot easier to find than I thought, lol

Let's buff them up then. It doesn't hurt too bad to lose a map's worth of gold/tomes (earth only OTL) and they give US exp when they kill things, so I instantly like them a lot more than I first did. Besides there're no shops that I can see, so probably not a good idea yet to go full on gold-farming.

Edit: what do you guys think: spd/def/res mix, or more killy?

1(2?)HP/1SPD/1LCK/1DEF/1RES until ~10LCK and then we'll switch over to focusing on DEF/SPD/LCK or DEF/RES and farming gold.

I want to get them a bit of HP right away, since it sees a lot of use due to the buff mechanic in this game (even if it isn't a very strong stat) but I think that we'll be okay once it's in the mid 20s range.

Fair enough.

We're probably going to cut straight up (through the forest) right away and try to kill the closest group of enemies real fast starting on turn #2 and then just follow the path to the end. There's no way we're going to beat the cavalry to the end (since they have a non-forested path to follow) and wyverns/pegassi ignore terrain penalties anyways.

I expect either a lot of reinforcements in the top-right corner when we reach the upper half of the map, or that it's the site of a 'secret' (meaning that we walk over and assuming that there are some on this map). That's my approach to this map, until something terrible/unexpected happens anyways.

Okay, what did I learn today? Plant tomes are good vs. forest tiles.

I'm thinking deal with the mages first and then move on.

--> 82.8% chance of success

Adel moves to [%45] and attacks Zombie Mage #1
> 92% chance to hit for 7 damage; retaliate: 84% hit, 0 damage, 1.5% chance to inflict 'tangle'
Colver to [%46] and attacks Zombie Mage #1
> 90% chance to kill 11 damage (kills)

We could sub Shannon in for Colver because she can canto to safety, but I have to check Herpestidae's decision on healing staff damage first.

It'd be nice to have Alberich to deal with the incoming Pegassai (ETA 2 turns), so we could sub him for Colver in the above plan as well, with an 85% chance to deal damage.

Edit: Colver's Water Tome is weak to PLANTS, so it'll be better to use either Alberich or Shannon to re-murder that mage. Maybe use him to stomp down Archer #1 on [%43] from [%44]...

Alright so let's do:

Adel + Shannon double-team the mage down
Colver re-kills the archer

... do we want Alberich to join up with the main group?
Pros: He ignores forest-penalty to MOV and we may want him shoot at pegassai as early as next turn.
Cons: He can't do what you intended for him to be doing; engaging in a hit-and-run war with the western cavalry forces through forest terrain?

If we want him to join up:

Adel + Alberich double-team the mage down
> Shannon finishes it if it doesn't die
Colver re-kills the archer
> Shannon finishes it if it doesn't die (assuming she can still act)
Shannon kills one of the other zombies with heal if possible

Otherwise, business as normal.

How long does this lowest stat always going up last? Like, first 5-10 levels, or the whole game?

"More christmas power for Glaive! Try to stop me now! Bold speech makes me seem more violent! SO DO CAPS! GRRRRAAAAAHHHHH!!!"

And there be the update.

Remember that annoying as hell water temple that changed the terrain so your guys ended up stuck in the middle of the pool for eight turns? :smallbiggrin:

As an aside, I actually wrote (http://codepad.org/jsbojJQo) some code (http://codepad.org/wh1YNng8) to randomly generate the mooks, then worked from there.

@Zelt: For as long as your character lives. Being very lenient on player power because the enemies aren't going to stay at 25 Point power level forever.

Well. Who's up for grinding out some levels, JRPG style?

How does turning work again; was it 'if you die while turning you become a zombie'?

Yeah, I was wondering about zombification too. Would nomming zombies (not eating them of course) be bad for my wyverns health?

Looks like Shannon needs to use her second staff again.......

Can she cure herself?

Oh, also, shouldn't Adel's proficiency be 8/20 (and iron sword durability at 45/50)? He's hit 5 times and gotten 3 kills. Or are we not getting double WEXP on fatal hits?

Pretty much

The Zombies are magical in nature. Eating the flesh of one that's been re-killed won't do anything. Except probably cause an upset stomach because rotten meat.

Shannon can't cure herself, but as the staff seems to have a mind of its own, it'll probably cure her. Why it didn't cure the girl who gave it to Shannon is a mystery. I can make something up if you want.

I'll get right on that.

Because Shannon's the chosen one! (Of course we'll have to lie to Adel and just say it's because she's a princess :smalltongue:)

I was just worried that if Shannon gets hit by a zombie, we lose.

@Herpestidae
Alright, cool. Don't have to worry about zombification until after death then.

@Illven
Adel's going turn out like Nippon Ichi's Asagi isn't he.

"What do you mean I'm not the main character? I'm in every cutsce- oh my God, I'm not! I'm nawt tha mawn chawracta'! Whaw, I... bu- than who- you! YOU!!!"

And then after some "character development" and the end of game credits roll...

This is after Shannon has turned to drinking and several different kinds of illegal drugs to cope with the team :smalltongue:

Only.... sane.... person.... That's why she's the chosen one.

There's nothing wrong with Alberich. Now that he's not turning.
