Our theme this month is...
I'm Board
This Iron Avatarist is here to celebrate one of everyone's favorite pastimes: Board Games! In this contest you will submit entries based on any and all board games, ranging from Monopoly and Sorry! to Arkham Horror and Descent. Entries can be either people playing the game, or things within the game's universe and setting. Or if you find a middle ground between them, that's OK, too!

Remember: All artwork must be your own. Do not take, alter, or use any of the The Giant's art. Thanks.

Categories
There will be a First through Third place award for each of the following:

Best Avatar (Any creation 120x120. Please do not submit "large versions". The avatar must be able to stand on its own.)
Best OOTSatar (Anything based on a character, creature, or setting from the Order of the Stick comic. )
Best Scene (Anything else.)
Best Rookie (only applicable to those who have never won a prize in any of these competitions before)

And, of course, the Best Overall award.

And as an extra, The Ruki's Choice Award, which I will give to whatever entry I personally like the most from any category. My opinion matters, dammit.

Rules - For Participants

1. All entries must be posted by August 15, 2012. at Noon, EST.

2. Every entry must include a bolded introduction as to what category you're entering in. Additionally, if you've never won anything in a previous contest, remember to add "Best Rookie Entry". Failure to do so will make the judges miss your entry.

3. Every entry must include an italic title.

For example:
Best Avatar
Best Rookie
Haruki buys Boardwalk and awakens Cthulhu

4. All entries may be submitted ONCE and for ONE single category. ONLY exception are Best Rookie Entries, which will be submitted for both categories. All entries are contestants for the Best Overall and Ruki's Choice awards by default, so there's no need to tag those.
4.b. Another exception, when submitting a large scene, it is allowed to submit one single character from the scene as an Avatar. For example: If you submit a large comic, you may submit the character used for that comic separately.

5. You cannot re-submit an entry previously submitted to any IA competition, no exceptions.

6. Do not use spoilers. It makes the judge's job that much harder, and they may do you harm.

7. Only the avatarist who created the avatar may submit it.

8. Keep entries within PG-13 or better. Adhere to forum rules.

9. You are allowed to enter any artwork created before the contest, but you are limited to two pre-made entries per category. There is no limit for entries made for the contest. This rule still requires you to adhere to rule 5.

11. You may not submit entries made by character creators or similar automated artwork-maker thingies.

Rules - For Spectators

1. You are free to post and comment in the thread at any time.

2. Please do not quote posts with images. The entry/name will suffice. For instance to comment on the above entry:

Best Avatar
Best Rookie
Haruki buys Boardwalk and awakens Cthulhu

Do NOT quote the .

3. If you post an image in the thread that is not a submission, we ask that you put it in a spoiler. This keeps the image from being confused with an entry and makes the judges' job easier.

Rules - For Judges

1. Please PM me your votes before September 5, 2012. I reserve the right to disregard your judging if it does not arrive in time.

2. Submit your votes for the winners of each category, first, second, and third place. This includes first, second and third place for Best Rookie AND for Best Overall. Best Overall is decided independently not by the results of the previous categories.

If it makes things easier for you, just fill out the following sheet:
Best Avatar
1.
2.
3.

Best OOTSatar
1.
2.
3.

Best Scene
1.
2.
3.

Best Rookie
1.
2.
3.

Best Overall
1.
2.
3.

3. The votes will be counted as follows: A first place vote gets 3 points. A second place vote gets 2 points, a third place vote gets 1 point. After all the judges have voted, the votes are counted and added up, highest score wins. In the event of a tie, my vote will be the tie-breaker.

4. DO NOT discuss or share your votes with other judges OR contestants.

5. No category is declared invalid as long as there are at least two entries, so don't skip over any category. Also, you may not vote for less than three entries as long as three or more entries exist. Doing so invalidates your vote in the category.

6. As a request, when submitting your votes to me, please do not embed the image, quote it, or link to it. Simply type out "[Entry], by [Artist]" I copy your PM into a Word Document, so including anything other than text is counter-productive. Format it as you please.

7. On an extra note, I suggest keeping a copy of your votes, in case I make a mistake, so it can be used as a backup.

Good luck!

Is D&D considered a board game? "Sword & Board?"

WOTC has put out at least 3 D&D style board games, including a Drizz't one and the infamous Castle Ravenl....you know that place.

I may try my hoof at this. Of course, drawing with hooves goes about as well as expected.

Are photographs permitted? Because I'm kind of crocheting (http://cthulhucrochet.blogspot.com/2009/04/settlers-of-catan-ghan-with-free.html) a Catan board.

If not, that's fine, I can draw stuff too. Probably will either way you answer.

Haruki-kun
2012-07-05, 02:11 PM
No, sorry. I'd accept a hand-drawn entry photographed and uploaded, but if the entry is not a drawing, then that's where we'll have to draw the line.

This contest is relevant to my interests.
In fact, come to think of it, I have a bunch of avatars already which fit the theme... (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7166475&postcount=714)

So, OK, let me look at the rules... only two pre-made entries per category. OK. I assume Best Rookie is exempt from that?
Let's go with:

...Hmm, that doesn't seem right.

I'm trying to map the Order of the Stick characters to the Clue(do) characters, and it's not working very well. A. Boddy is, of course, Xykon, and V would make a good Professor Plum, but beyond that it gets a bit iffy.

Part of the problem, of course, is that there are three Clue pieces with female titles (Mrs. or Miss), whereas only one member of the Order is unquestionedly female. (At the moment, I realize.) Trying to go with theme colors leaves Roy as Mrs. Peacock, Belkar as Mr. Green, and maybe Elan as Colonel Mustard and Haley as Miss Scarlet. Which leaves only one opening - Mrs. White - to be filled by Durkon.

Any advice? Should I start importing secondary or minor characters instead of the Order?

Edit: Alternately, Roy's name does have "Green" in it. So if we displace Belkar, then he could fill the Mrs. White role... but Durkon doesn't seem to fit Mrs. Peacock any better. Hmmmm...

I agree with Serpentine. Just change the "Mrs" or "Miss" to the appropriate gender -- otherwise I think it's a perfect fit.

Dr. Epic: please don't quote images. Judges are simple creatures, and it confuses them.

Let's see now, what are some of my favourite games... Small World has huge avataring opportunity. You could have some Wealthy Ogres up against some Bivouacking Wizards, and so on.
Hungry Hungry Hippos seems an obvious choice.
I'll be REALLY impressed if anyone managed to make a Pueto Rico entry... Those "settlers", eh? :smallamused:
The Order of the Stick attempting to work out the StarCraft boardgame would be pretty funny

Well, I guess no point in delaying this any longer. No more entries please.

New contest will be up tomorrow.

By the way, for all the people asking me about the results of old contests: I am aware that I'm behind, but I'm having trouble with trophies and some votes. I might go ahead and post the trophy-less results tomorrow (or the day after that if something gets in the way) for those contests and get back to Trophies as soon as I can.

PLEASE I beg of you to be patient with me. I realize I have not been doing the best job, to say the least, but I still need your support to keep going.

Also, I'd like to ask you guys that if you need to ask me when the results are gonna be up or you want to poke me or something contact me via PM or some other medium instead of posting in the actual thread. The mods have given me permission to Necromance threads when the results are ready, but I'd still prefer it if we could avoid having to use this permission, especially if the results aren't in yet.

Thank you for understanding.

Iron Avatarist is all about creativity within a theme. Yes, it requires hard work (I was actually going to enter this one too, but I lost track of the time), but the main problem for many is the creativity that goes into it--the need for inspiration. Sometimes, the ideas just don't come to you.

Meanwhile, trophies are easier. You know exactly what to make. Yes, you have artistic liberty to figure out how to make the trophy, but the theme and categories are given, you just have to crank it out. Haruki already has a trophy maker, and he has two back-ups now. So, yes, there are volunteers.

Not least because I believe getting trophies up quickly is the best way to get the contests running properly again.
As far as I'm concerned, if you don't volunteer to help with the trophy making, and don't enter the contests, you probably oughtn't complain about the slacking of contests

(speaking of which: Haruki, point me in the direction of any contests that need trophies. I'll do some tonight, if you like. Also, is this the only contest I have yet to judge?)

Thank you very much for your offer. I have a couple Avatarists right now who contacted me, so I seem to have enough help. =) The problem I have now is that I'm having trouble contacting the trophy maker who was doing the trophies for Putting on the Ritz (the oldest contest with no results out yet), and I saw a couple of the trophies he was making so I know he did get started with them, so I'd feel bad if I gave the job to someone else right NOW. Of course, I'll have to do it if the trophy maker doesn't show up soon, but I'd like to continue trying to contact him before this, because I hate turning down people who are helping me voluntarily...

At any rate, the contest is late already, so a day or two won't hurt anyone. :smallsigh:

As for the other contests, I'll approach the Avatarists who contacted me soon about them.

BTW, Serp, I checked, and your votes are in for both the previous contests, so yes, this is the only contest you have left to judge.
