I am currently creating the following character for PFS, and I am looking for advice on how to proceed.

Human Inquisitor or Ragathiel 1
Rage Domain

Str: 18
Dex: 12
Con: 12
Int: 10
Wis: 14
Cha: 10

Feats: Intimidating Prowess, Toughness.
Granted weapon proficiency: Bastard Sword

First, is there a better feat than Toughness at first level? If I had the BAB for it, Power Attack would be there, but that will have to wait until level 3.

Next, am I right in thinking that taking one level of Barbarian at the start would be a bad thing? The level of spell casting and judgements should outweigh the benefits of a few more hit points, an getting Power Attack and Rage early.

Lastly, how important is it to have the Knowledge skills for Monster Lore maxed out? To me it seems like a waste of skill points that could be better spent elsewhere.

Inquisitor is a VERY dip-able class, especially for less magic-inclined Inquisitors, as their spellcasting is the most important class feature that truly scales on level. As a melee oriented Inquisitor you should be focused on killing things rather than spellcasting, so a level of Barbarian wouldn't go amiss.

On that note, if you took a level of Barbarian at first you would also qualify for Power attack at first level... something to think about...

With Intimidating Prowess already on you planned feats list you might want to head into the Dazzling Display (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/dazzling-display-combat) or Cornugon Smash (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/combat-feats/cornugon-smash-combat) feat lines. Otherwise, I would personally drop Intimidating Prowess in favor of a more combat oriented feat.

Finally, the point of Knowledge skills and Monster Lore for the Inquisitor is often the synergy with the Bane class feature at 5th level. Knowing what a monster is means you can utilize bane correctly all of the time (without meta-gaming.)

Actually, going Half-Orc (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/core-races/half-orc) would sold both problems.
The Half-Orc Inquisitor favored bonus is +1/2 to Intimidate, and +1/2 Knowledge to Identify creatures.

Intimidating Prowess was only there for lack of any better feats, and I might go with Human or Half-Orc depending on what feats I ultimately plan on taking. Intimidate might be saved for

With Barbarian 1, I would be able to pick up Rage Powers, so that might be worth something. A rage power or something to improve the attack bonus might be worth taking Human over Half-Orc.

You would need Barbarian 2 to start getting Rage Powers.
The 'Extra Rage Power (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/extra-rage-power)' feat has a pre-req of "Rage Power class feature".
