Yohoho and a bottle of rum everybody! I'm not really going to say much, mostly because I'm lazy, but I've decided to try and do pixel art. It's an art style I've always thought to be pretty nifty, but have never made any of my own for lack of skill. I feel as if making ootsatars has helped me learn a bit more about art in general though, so I decided to give it a swing.

I don't know if this is going to become one of those "One image a day" threads, and I doubt it because A: I get lazy, and B: sometimes I want to do more than one, so lets just call this a, "Please help me not suck" thread. In fact, that's going into the title. Derp.

So, without further delay, let's begin this thread!

Working my way through a tutorial, I made these. The templates you see were also made by me, so I don't think that's cheating. Both teal haired guys are meant to be the same dude, just by the way.
Also: I can't decide if that first character looks like a monkey, a gremlin, or a not-so-horrifying-as-usual firby.

There's this guy (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=246779) who might be able to tell you more about pixeling.

I'll go check that out right now, Domochevsky. In the mean time, I finished the tutorial, and gave myself a mini-project, re-creating the human character one more time, on a slightly larger scale, WITHOUT looking at the tutorial. I did, however, use references.

I'm digging those really tiny sprites you made (the monkey & guy); You've done a pretty good job making recogniseable characters within those size restrictions.

Most of your sprites look fairly decent at first glance, there's a few things I have questions about (can I see the char's bellybutton through thick armor? Are the shoulder pads meant to be assymetrical?, etc)

You've done a pretty good job avoiding most clear "beginner" mistakes commonly made in pixelart in these sprites, so definitely a good job there! I'd be interested in seeing some bigger sprites/pixelart by you to see how well your skills would hold up in something more complex.

The only significant critique I can give is that on your first baldie template, the shaping on the head is definitely not human. If you had a bald guy walk around like that, it'd seem like he'd have a bloated head or something.

Anyway, have fun with the pixel arts.

I'm sure I will! So I tried to fix up what you mentioned, as well as made the baldie template one step bigger again. I'm going to keep progressing with the size slowly, as I find the larger it is, the harder it is :smallfrown:
