Hi all,

I'm posting this from the alt.giantitp.com website because starting just this morning I can't seem to get into giantitp.com at all. Trying to go there is giving me a full page DNS resolution error. I tried clearing my cache and temporary files and restarting Firefox to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

DNS Resolution Error

You've requested a page on a website (www.giantitp.com) that is on the CloudFlare network. Unfortunately, CloudFlare is currently unable to resolve your requested domain (www.giantitp.com). There are two potential causes of this:

Most likely: if the owner just signed up for CloudFlare it can take a few minutes for the website's information to be distributed to our global network. Check back in about 5 minutes and the site should be up and running and enjoying all the benefits of CloudFlare.

Less likely: something is wrong with this site's configuration. Usually this happens when accounts have been signed up with a partner organization (e.g., a hosting provider) and the provider's DNS fails.

Edit: Posting from my computer at work everything seems to be working fine. Not sure if that means the problem solved itself with time, or if it's a local issue from the computer at my apartment. I won't be able to check for 12 hours or so.

It's not just you Anarion, I've had the same error 6 times in the 90minutes. Generally it lasts about 3-5 minutes then I can get back on.

I was on for about 20 minutes and couldn't get it working, then I left to get some food and go to work. As I noted, it's working fine from my work computer, and I can't test from my apartment until the end of the day.

Have had the same problem myself twice today, once from work and once from home. Clearing my DNS cache ("ipconfig /flushdns" and/or poking my modem) seemed to make it go away, but that could still be coincidence. Didn't think to copy and paste the error page sorry, but I think the only difference was that my IP address here is 121.74.227.200.

Well I wont say my IP, but I'm in the same boat as you Excession.
It seems to be getting worse in the last couple of hours as well.
I first noticed it about 1pm NZ time (GMT +12), and it's really starting to annoy me.

Happening again for me now, posting via alt site. This time flushing my DNS did not fix the problem. Error message text:

Posting this to the alt site was very slow.

If the site gets so slow that it doesn't respond, the CDN will obviously be unable to deliver the pages which are not cached. In general, every file including the HTML pages on the main part of this site can be delivered, as it is all static and cached (however, the CDN will always try to pull the HTML file from the server first).

The forums, however, are dynamic PHP content, which is never cached. So, if it gets so slow as to prevent a connection, you'll get a different error to the usual timeout, though it means the same thing.

I'll let you know if it happens again, but I'm pretty sure I was getting this for just giantitp.com, not for the forums. I couldn't access any part of the website at all, cached or not.

I had that error message come up when I tried to just go to the main page, the longest I had to wait for it to come back up was nearly 40 minutes.

Yep, getting it again from my apartment. I'm getting the error trying to go to the main site, just giantitp.com. I can't get any part of the site at the moment (posting again from alt.giantitp.com) and the error is a full screen "DNS Resolution Error" accompanied by big orangey yellow exclamation point.

If it's affecting the main site, then it would seem that there's a bug I need to track down.

I'm also having the error message when accessing the main website, not just the forums.
Posting from the alt site as I've only had it let me through once using the standard one. Error message follows:

I'm in Japan, so maybe it's related to the distance? It's a pretty frustrating error. I find that I can only get to the site for maybe 5 minutes at a time, and once I get an error, every part of the site (main page, comics, forums, shop) becomes inaccessible for 5-15 minutes.

If it's frustrating you, then please switch to the alt site as soon as you get the error. We would obviously prefer that you keep trying the non-alt site every few minutes to help us locate the problem and reduce the problem for others (as the alt site uses more resources than the non-alt, thus increasing the instances and duration of the error).

Edit: I tried switching my DNS to use the Google ones rather than my ISP, but that did nothing to fix the problem. This isn't especially surprising I guess, if this is a DNS problem then it's on the CloudFlare server and not my machine.

Refreshing the page sometimes gets me back into the forum, but meven when it does, alot of the website images (eg, the "forums" button on the left, or emoticons) do not appear, instead only giving an html box with the text and a red 'x' "picture not found" style image.

Sorry for dodgy terminology, but I'm no web design expert. It's only been happening since late last week for me. Work comps use IE 7.

Update. I was having a period of the site working normally, and then right before getting a DNS error, I noticed that pressing the multiquote button caused the little quote mark image to disappear and change into a line of text. Then when I tried to actually leave that page by pressing quote, DNS error.

Which is odd ... because it's definitely IE7. Unless it's something odd because it's an office network =/

I wouldn't mind Mozilla 4.0, it would probably be more up to date!

Perth, Western Australia here, and I'm getting the same problem nearly every single time I click on a forum link - but only from my work PC (using IE 8 :smallyuk:). Home PC using Firefox seems to be okay.

Refreshing sometimes seems to work, though often it's only partially loading the page i.e. I get content but I lose some page formatting, background, etc.

I have switched the CDN service back on. If you experience these DNS Resolution Errors again, please report it here.

Please provide the following information:
The results from pinging www.giantitp.com and alt.giantitp.com
In Windows, you can get this by opening a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd, then press Enter), then typing "ping www.giantitp.com", press Enter, type "ping alt.giantitp.com", press Enter (both sans quotes)

The results of a traceroute (aka tracert) to www.giantitp.com and alt.giantitp.com
In Windows, you can get this by opening a command prompt (Start > Run > cmd, then press Enter), then typing "tracert www.giantitp.com", press Enter, type "tracert alt.giantitp.com", press Enter (both sans quotes)

For full troubleshooting purposes, it would also be really good if you could include your public IP address at the time, you can send this to me in a PM. You can get this by going to Google and typing in "my ip" (sans quotes).
