3.5 D&D
I've got a Psychic Warrior/Chaos Monk who was recently bummed to learn he couldn't stack Expansion and Polymorph to reach Collosal Size. So we've gone about homebrewing a new power that he can research when he reaches higher levels. What do you folks think? Is this balanced? Is worded correctly?

------------------------------------------------

Greater Expansion
Psychometabolism
Level: Psion 7, Psychic warrior 6
Display: Olfactory
Manifesting Time: 1 standard
action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 min./level (D)
Power Points: 11

This power causes instant growth, multiplying your height, length, and width by 8 and multiplying your weight by 32. This increase changes your size by three categories. You gain a +8 size bonus to Strength, a –6 size penalty to Dexterity (to a minimum effective Dexterity score of 1), a –4 size penalty on attack rolls, and a –4 size penalty to Armor Class due to your increased size.

You take up space and have reach as a appropriate to a creature of your size (see Table 7–1, page 314 of the Monster Manual). This power doesn’t change your speed. If insufficient room is available for the desired growth, you attain the maximum possible size and can make a Strength check (using your increased Strength score) to burst any enclosures in the process. If you fail, you are constrained without harm by the materials enclosing you—you cannot crush yourself to death by increasing your size.

This power never makes you larger than colossal.

All your equipment, worn or carried, is similarly expanded by this power.

Melee and projectile weapons deal more damage (see Table 2–2, page 28 of the Dungeon Master’s Guide). Other psionic or magical properties are not affected by this power. Any affected item that leaves your possession (including a projectile or thrown weapon) instantly returns to its normal size. This means that thrown weapons deal their normal damage (projectiles deal damage based on the size of the weapon that fired them). Multiple effects that increase size do not stack, which means (among other things) that you can’t use a second manifestation of this power to further expand yourself.

Augment: You can augment this power in one or more of the following ways.
1. If you spend 6 additional power points, this power increases your size by four categories. You gain a +16 size bonus to Strength,a –8 size penalty to Dexterity (to a minimum effective Dexterity score of1), a –8 size penalty

It takes 6 extra pp to boost Expansion from 1 size to 2, so boosting it again should require another 6, for a level 7 power; since it should only be psiwar-capable (why should psions get the stronger version but not the weaker), it wouldn't work.

A better approach is to instead just allow Expansion to spend 12pp to augment to 3 sizes, and 18pp to augment to 4. (Note that pre-epic without ML boosting features you can't augment to 4 and also be able to spend to increase the duration from 1 round/level.)

The Power Points line is incorrect; it should have "Psion/wilder 13, psychic warrior 11" like personal mind blank does. Also, the wording in the last augment is incomplete, cutting off before it finishes detailing size penalties; you may also want to include a (technically redundant) reminder that even the augmented version can't push you beyond Colossal.

I believe the point is to give psiwars a slight discount on it, making it actually more efficient than expansion. Whether psions/wilders should get it I'm not so sure, though.

Edit: Hmm, are you going to make a "greater compression" also? :smallwink:

Edit 2: If you decide psions/wilders do need this, you could give the power an alternative function: expansion, one or two size categories as appropriate, on an ally. There's even precedent for powers that have more targeting options in the psion/wilder list than the same power has in the psiwar list.
