View Full Version : How Powerful Can Racial Heritage Be? [PF]

I was browsing on the SRD for feats and stumbled upon Racial Heritage, which lets a human count as another humanoid race for the sake of feats, spells, PrCs, Traits, etc.

I can see potential, but how can this be used in an optimized character build? I can see this used in a Human Fighter build with RH: Kitsune for 8 SLAs 2/day, the ability to burn a swift action to take the form of a fox, and definitely have some good fluff. Are there any good options for this feat?

Do you mean this one? (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/racial-heritage)

It doesn't seem to actually give you any racial powers, it just allows effects to treat you as a member of that race. For instance, if I was a human with RH: Elf, I wouldn't actually gain the Elf's immunity to sleep or low-light vision for instance. It would just allow me to do things like:

(a) use items that are elf-only
(b) qualify for elf-only PrCs and feats
(c) create magic items that can only be created by elves

etc.

If you take half-orc, you can take Keen Scent (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/keen-scent) for scent or Razortusk (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/razortusk) for a bite attack. Keen scent is also a requirement for one of my favorite feats, Smell Fear (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/smell-fear).

Or you could take Beast Rider (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/beast-rider-orc-half-orc) and ride a war-trained triceratops into battle.

I don't know about how much raw power you can get from RH, but there are a lot of cool options for it.

Aasimar seems pretty good. You can grow wings and have access to a bunch of unique channel feats.

It seems that this is exactly what this feat allows you to do. It is almost exactly worded like the Half Elf ability Found here:
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/core-races/half-elf
"Elf Blood: Half-elves count as both elves and humans for any effect related to race."
And the Half Orc Ability Here:
http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/core-races/half-orc
"Orc Blood: Half-orcs count as both humans and orcs for any effect related to race."

Considering the ARG? Hrm. Human with the orc witch archetype? Or wings? Has potential.

The big issue with a couple of posts (I made this mistake myself) is it says specifically Humanoid, thus denying Fletchling, Aasimar, Tiefling, and the Genie 5, since they are all Outsider (Native).

This however doesn't disallow Tengu (Tengu Wings, Tengu Raven Form), Kobold (Dragon Aspect feat tree), Kitsune (Magic Tails), Dwarf (Goblin Cleaver and Hard-Headed feat trees), and Changeling (Mother's Gift). And this isn't including Racial PrCs (Dwarven Defender, which on a Human Samurai of the Shield/Dwarven Defender could be cool), Archetypes (Dreamweaver, Cave Sniper, Bogborn Alchemist), and items. Granted, the flaw lies in you counting as BOTH for Quarry/Hatred, but if you choose something obscure (Kitsune, Grippli, Changeling), the odds of you getting a stacking on yourself is slim (Unlike Human/Elf, Human/Orc, and Human/Dwarf).

Personally, I see this as an option to play a male Changeling Witch or to play a dragonblooded Human Sorcerer/Dragon Disciple. That, and some powerful shapeshifting abilities (Fox for a stealth-based class, Large Raven as a flyer who can do some damage). That, and the fluff of a Tengu-Blooded Human Witch with Raven-themed Spells, Familiar, and even some cool Raven-Themed items, plus if a fight goes sour and it's you vs mob of enemies, you can shapeshift into the Giant Raven and get out of dodge.

Oh, wow, I forgot about that feat because before Advanced Races it was useless... but now...

Nagaji-humans can take Spit Venom (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/spit-venom-combat-nagaji) to... spit venom and blind enemies.

Orc-humans (not a Half-Orc?) can take Reverse-Feint (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/reverse-feint-combat-orc) for some counter-attacks shenanigans, Trap Wrecker (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/trap-wrecker-orc) to 'disable' traps with attacks, and Thrill of the Kill (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/thrill-of-the-kill-orc-half-orc) to regain rounds of Rage by killing things.

Oread-humans can take the Dwarf Blooded (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/dwarf-blooded-oread) feat to gain Dwarven racial traits (Oh gods the blood-ception...), Elemental Jaunt (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/elemental-jaunt-ifrit-oread-sylph-undine) for a 1/day Plane Shift to the plane of earth, the Murmurs of the Earth (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/murmurs-of-earth-oread) line to gain Tremorsense, and the Oread Earth Glider (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/oread-earth-glider-oread) line to gain Earth Glide.

Sylph-humans can take the Wings of Air (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/wings-of-air-sylph)feat line to magically fly with light or no armor, Inner Breath (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/inner-breath-sylph) to no longer breathe, Cloud Gazer (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/cloud-gazer-sylph) to see through fog, mist, and clouds, and Elemental Jaunt (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/elemental-jaunt-ifrit-oread-sylph-undine) for 1/day Plane Shift to the plane of air.

Tengu-humans can take Tengu Wings (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/tengu-wings-tengu) for... Tengu wings... and later take Tengu Raven Form (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/tengu-raven-form-tengu) to transform into a giant bird.

Tiefling-humans can take Armor of the Pit (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/armor-of-the-pit-tiefling) for 2 AC from natural armor, Expanded Fiendish Resistance (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/expanded-fiendish-resistance-tiefling) to gain resistance 5 to one basic energy type, and Terrifying Mask (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/terrifying-mask) to use Intimidate as Sense Motive when telling if someone is trustworthy or not.

Undine-humans can take Aquatic Ancestry (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/aquatic-ancestry-undine) to gain the Amphibious quality and add 10 feet to your swim speed, Water Skinned (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/water-skinned-undine) to put a fire out by touching it, Steam Caster (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/steam-caster-undine) to give fire spells the water descriptor and cast them underwater, and Elemental Jaunt (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/arg-feats/elemental-jaunt-ifrit-oread-sylph-undine) for 1/day Plane Shift to the plane of water.

Dang that is a lot of really cool abilities that a human can spring some feats for...All the other feats seem to be otherwise easy to get the same effect elsewhere or simply not worth it at all.

The elemental races; Ifrit, Oread, Sylph, and Undine; all have some amazing racial feats and Kobolds also share one of the more powerful spots with some nice dragon-themed abilities. As a Kitsune-human it's pretty awesome that you can turn into a fox at 3rd level without actually being a Kitsune. Grippli also gets a special mention with a 10 foot reach touch attack tongue that can pick up light objects with a single feat.

There's a lot that this can do, from giving a mere human flight, SLAs, and a natural weapon.

And quick sub-question: Do Duergar count as Dwarf for Feats/Traits/Stufflikethat, since a Duergar Fighter/Living Monolith could be a powerhouse in melee, rolling with Enlarge Person followed by Master Ka Stone while wearing armor and absorbing damage with a Helmet

Minor nitpick incoming. Pathfinder has no Dwarven Defender, it has the Stalwart Defender (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/prestige-classes/other-paizo/s-z/stalwart-defender); basically a Dwarven Defender without being dwarf only. Still a cool idea, just has nothing to do with Racial Heritage.

Well, Noble Drow are freaking crazy, and even have racial-supremacy in their fluff. The editor suggests LA +1 (not official. LA +2 seems more appropriate) because Paizo were morons when they wrote the race and forgot the LA. +8 stat adjustment, a whole paragraph of racial spell-likes (both at-will and per-day), SR 11+HD which items can improve, and no LA?! Not sure if it's worth burning a feat, but a Human with Racial Heritage (Halfling) for the Underfoot Adept Monk would be interesting, starting at medium instead of small. Adds up to some colossal trip modifiers, that.

A human Ancient Lorekeeper Oracle, with the human favored class bonus, is much more interesting.

The Oracle build could be insane, especially with Words of Power. Combine this with the Ancients mystery and whatever curse tickles your fancy, and you can kick teeth in

I think Psyren is right on this one. It's not an instant I win all abilities of a race for 1 feat and no +LA restriction buttons. It doesn't say anything about getting abilities, SLA's, Ex, or SA's. It clearly says you're treated as that race for taking feats, traits etc.

Of course it says "and so on" which in playgrounder speak means "IT MEANS I CAN DO WHATEVER I WANT BECAUSE I WANT TO AND IT DOESN'T SPECIFICALLY FORBID ME SO I T MUST MEAN ITS RAW!!!" :smallamused:

You must talk to different playgrounders than I do or the Playground has changed significantly during my semi-absence the last couple months. Some Playgrounders are not as wise or quick-witted but we can get most of them to learn them a thing or two if they are willing to learn and teach amongst the rest of us. :smallwink:

:smallconfused:
Nowhere does it say it can use a weapon, or reload.

You have a prehensile tongue with a range of 10 feet. You can pick up items weighing no more than 5 pounds, make Sleight of Hand checks, perform the steal or disarm combat maneuvers, or make melee touch attacks with your tongue.

It can HOLD a weapon, but that doesn't get you very far.

That's good enough. You have two very serviceable hands to do the actual reloading with, you just need to get one of your guns out of them temporarily to reload.

Does it bug anyone else that humans are so unabatedly horny that we've got half-human hybrids with all of these other races? I mean, Kobolds. We have people walking around with Kobold ancestry. And how do you explain Kitsune ancestor to your children? "Son, one night daddy got very drunk and humped a fox" doesn't seem to cut it.

Kitsune is one of the easier ancestry to explain; after all they do have a human form. It one I worry about is how the Grippli ancestor came about. Not only do you have the question the question of how drunk do you need to be to get busy with a two foot frog, but if Grippli are amphibians they probably lay eggs which the males then fertalize. Biologically I can't even imagine how that crossbreed could happen.

Also, as far as I can tell, half-elves and half-orcs can also get the Racial Heritage feat because they count as human. Which means your Half-Orc Scarred Witch can get the Changeling Feats.

Given that the feat only specifies the humanoid type, not a humanoid listed as a playable race, it gets worse. (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/indexes-and-tables/monsters-by-type#type-humanoid) Derro? Dark Creeper? Boggard? Troglodyte? Ettin? Rune Giant?? ("Rune giants are 40 feet tall and weigh 25,000 pounds.") We're gonna need a bigger step ladder

Granted, these options have no mechanical benefit, but it's apparently something that can happen in Golarian.

So Half-Orc Scarred Witch with Changeling blood... Can they also have the Dreamweaver?

Just checked, and yes, they both can stack, minus the 10th level ability would work kinda weirdly.

What you lose with "Scarred Dreamweaver" (Scarred Witch Doctor/Dreamweaver):

Familiar
Heal Skill
Patron
1st, 2nd, 6th, and 10th level Hexes

What you gain:

Fetish Mask
Sense Motive
Constitution instead of Intelligence
+1/2 Class Level Natural Armor Enhancement (minimum 1)
Pre-Selected Patron with decent spell list
+1 DC to Mind Affecting Spells vs. a sleeping target
Modify Memories of a sleeping target
Magic Jar to a sleeping target with Mask as the soul receptical

With Half-Orc's Shaman Apprentice and Sacred Tattoo and Changeling's Favored Class Bonus, this is one scary witch who can enter your mind, rearrange your memories, take over your body, and scary-cool flavor.

"I AM MUSCLE WIZARD. CAST SPELLS WITH MUSCLE. LOOK AT MY FLEX-HEX AND STRENGTHCASTING."

I think you meant "THIS TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN PASSED DOWN THROUGH THE ARMSTRONG FAMILY FOR GENERATIONS!"

Human with Racial Heritage for...oh, lets say Tengu.

Crossblooded (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/sorcerer/archetypes/paizo---sorcerer-archetypes/crossblooded) Sorcerer 5 with the Dragon and Orc Bloodlines.
Orc (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/sorcerer/bloodlines/bloodlines-from-paizo/orc-bloodline) Bloodline grants the Orc subtype.
Also, take X levels of Dragon Disciple.

Take the Eldritch Heritage (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/eldritch-heritage) feats for the ... hmmm...

We are Human/Tengu/Orc w/a significant amount of Dragon, what would be most absurd?

Eldritch Heritage for the Fey (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/core-classes/sorcerer/bloodlines/bloodlines-from-paizo/fey-bloodline) Bloodline
