Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

Also, I am seriously considering setting up a PbP pony game. Probably going to use the simple Roleplaying is Magic S2E (http://www.mlprim.com/s2e/) framework rather than the Pony Tales framework, although I will draw on the latter for inspiration.

Only ideas at this point are for an Equestrian campaign, of a tone slightly more "real" than the shows, but not grimdark. Think of the fics Dangerous Days or One Last Quest for an idea of what I'm talking about. Probably start with just 3-4 players. Given the need to set everything up, and determine what kind of story we could have, I don't think this would be starting soon. (not to mention I'm going on a trip in mid September)

Would anyone be interested in such a venture? Qualifications include that I am not an experienced GM, and the RiM mechanics are not as polished as say, nWoD or Mage. So there are likely to be a few teething issues. But I'm confident that, with the right people on board, we could overcome that.

Balmas, Siuis, you seemed to indicate an interest earlier, so if you want you have priority on the player spaces.

Also, would having a manipulation of sixfive dots be worth a cost of four merit points? I'd like to think being a successful changeling requires some composure, but then I'm staved for attribute dots...

Keep in mind that an attribute of 4 implies natural talent equal or better than everyone except for professional athletes, top professors, and famous con-men, to name a few. 4 is a lot of potential. That said, Arcadian body is totally awesome and you should take it and be awesome.

I'd personally suggest Hope/Gluttony, although I think you could make a case for Temperance/Gluttony to represent her usual careful planning and temptation to indulge in excess.

Maybe they want to reserve the possibility of pony-naming the months to match up with alternative holiday names like Nightmare Night and Hearthswarming Eve? Also, they don't really do days of the week much per se, just Tuesday. Twilight Sparkle really likes saying Tuesday.

Ooh gluttony. That's a keeper.

I think I'll let that sink in. The downside to starting with a supernatural is that five being the human maximum means that it's okay to exceed it. But mechanically it's fine. It feels weird having 'only' eight dice when five is an attainable max.

Memory surfacing. Thanqol suggesting. Two skills at four dots, one your supers killed profession, one a passionate hobby. Doesn't apply to attributes as such, but a goo starting point.

Right Now I'm watching Applebuck Season. I'm going through both seasons very slowly only watching episodes that I thought were good. So mediocre episodes will not be watched (pretty much every Rarity episode, I really have to do something about my Rarity hate.)

I'm going to say no, for Manipulation anyways. I can't speak to all the rolls that might be relevant, but someone with Manip and no Prescence is... a used car dealer that rips people off. Or the like. And you stated you wanted to build up to being a Queen. And Queens need a presence sooner or later.

And Composure gives you Willpower.

So unless you have a known specific inarguable use like a Contract that you plan to spam the heck out I'd find another use for those Merit dots and go for better rounded Socials.

Season 1 and Season 2 are pretty similar in some ways. Mix of episode types, various character focus and world-building, random epic moments. Season 1 was, I think, a bit more vague and thus a bit more consistent (hard to contradict yourself when a lot of the world is "fill in the blank"). I also think season 1 had a certain charm to it that comes from consistent world-building and that got a bit lost with season 2 being more over-the-top. On the other hand, season 2 had a lot of polish compared to the first season (way fewer animation errors). Season 2 also had great storytelling and took several characters to interesting places (e.g. Pinkie's Smile Song, Rarity's relationship with Sweetie Belle, Fluttershy and Rainbow's almost canon relationship).

If I had to put it into a blurb, Season 1 built a world with interesting characters. Season 2 took those characters on interesting adventures.

I tried watching Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and I still try to get through it. But it makes me go blind from over exposure to Pure Awesomeness, so it's hard some times.

Yeah and he's Mr Exposition more often then not.

To elaborate; There is no explicit shipping between any of the characters ... there is, however, plenty of potential fodder that can be interpreted as such by those who wish to do so.

(e.g. Rainbow once complained about being dragged along to watch butterfly migrations by Fluttershy. Strong friendship or something more? You decide!)

In short, I think they might be trolling us XD

As for the kiss, sorry Forum. But looking closely at the scene does reveal a gap between their faces as Rainbow picks Flutters up.

I know once I get past this one scene the rest of the chapter will be cake, but I just can't...

I've done this before with chapter one, it's like I try to find an excuse to slow down chapter creation.

Edit: none of these are spoilers, they're just random scenes in episodes.

I might miss a few, I trust other ponies to fill in the gaps.

1. Bop on the nose and general arm-in-arm movement during the "Best Pet" duet.
2. Rainbow grabs Fluttershy to help in Secret of My Excess (admittedly weak since they had to hold the sheet, but Fluttershy is usually a slowdown for Rainbow).
3. Acting together in Hearthswarming Eve
4. Getting Fluttershy out of bed in Super Squeezy Cider 6000, including Fluttershy being embarrased and Rainbow putting her first in line even though that meant missing out on cider.

So a question for pony thread. When I ate last time you guys sat down and just indulged in an old season one episode? Maybe binged the series again? I find it's always eye opening to see what there was that pulled me in that first time.

We are rewatching both seasons right now in glorious 40" tv and 5.1 dolby. While she sews Pinkies. We are at CutiePox episode

Season 1 and Season 2 are pretty similar in some ways. Mix of episode types, various character focus and world-building, random epic moments. Season 1 was, I think, a bit more vague and thus a bit more consistent (hard to contradict yourself when a lot of the world is "fill in the blank"). I also think season 1 had a certain charm to it that comes from consistent world-building and that got a bit lost with season 2 being more over-the-top. On the other hand, season 2 had a lot of polish compared to the first season (way fewer animation errors). Season 2 also had great storytelling and took several characters to interesting places (e.g. Pinkie's Smile Song, Rarity's relationship with Sweetie Belle, Fluttershy and Rainbow's almost canon relationship).

If I had to put it into a blurb, Season 1 built a world with interesting characters. Season 2 took those characters on interesting adventures.

For me it's the oposite, the first season is way to... generic in some episodes, a little too childlish.
Second season has all this great stories and adventures. Time travel, Real obsession, and Chocolate Rain Guys! Chocolate Rain!

I'm honestly not sure what to say about this ship... I hadn't even considered the idea of shipping in this show... even if its audience is much bigger than little girls, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that's probably somewhere near the target audience... at least quite a bit of the merchandice operates that way... Made that earlier gift shoping rather uncomfortable.

Edit: none of these are spoilers, they're just random scenes in episodes.

I might miss a few, I trust other ponies to fill in the gaps.

1. Bop on the nose and general arm-in-arm movement during the "Best Pet" duet.
2. Rainbow grabs Fluttershy to help in Secret of My Excess (admittedly weak since they had to hold the sheet, but Fluttershy is usually a slowdown for Rainbow).
3. Acting together in Hearthswarming Eve
4. Getting Fluttershy out of bed in Super Squeezy Cider 6000, including Fluttershy being embarrased and Rainbow putting her first in line even though that meant missing out on cider.

If you remember that argument way back when I had said that they could get away with a homosexual relationship as long as it was subtle.)

This reminds me that I really need to write my "Nighthunter" post-Grand Galloping Gala pulp fiction superhero pony fanfic some day. :smallannoyed:

Also, I am seriously considering setting up a PbP pony game. Probably going to use the simple Roleplaying is Magic S2E (http://www.mlprim.com/s2e/) framework rather than the Pony Tales framework, although I will draw on the latter for inspiration.

Only ideas at this point are for an Equestrian campaign, of a tone slightly more "real" than the shows, but not grimdark. Think of the fics Dangerous Days or One Last Quest for an idea of what I'm talking about. Probably start with just 3-4 players. Given the need to set everything up, and determine what kind of story we could have, I don't think this would be starting soon. (not to mention I'm going on a trip in mid September)

Would anyone be interested in such a venture? Qualifications include that I am not an experienced GM, and the RiM mechanics are not as polished as say, nWoD or Mage. So there are likely to be a few teething issues. But I'm confident that, with the right people on board, we could overcome that.

Balmas, Siuis, you seemed to indicate an interest earlier, so if you want you have priority on the player spaces.
I would love to be a part of this, but I just don't think I'll have the time to do it justice.

Here are the screenshots from the 720p iTunes version (http://imgur.com/YgpiO,c9nSc,t0rTA,TRCYj#3). There are three frames which might be a kiss. In these screenshots, it looks like it (especially watching their expressions in the next few frames) but strictly, only their noses overlap - RD's mouth is always a few centimetres from Fluttershy.

Relatedly: Why do ponies avoid mentioning the names of months? It's most obvious in "Ticket Master" - "On the twenty-first day of... yadda yadda..." - but thus far they've never said any month names. Which is weird, considering how often they use the days of the week.

Little known fact, Equestria is in fact on the Discworld. They don't mention months and years so that they can avoid having to explain things such as the century of the fruit fly or what Turnwise, Widdershings, Rimward, and Hubward means. :smallbiggrin:

In these screenshots, it looks like it (especially watching their expressions in the next few frames) but strictly, only their noses overlap - RD's mouth is always a few centimetres from Fluttershy.

Eh, I watched it on 1080p 60 FPS source frame by frame and they never touch, even their noses come together to about hoof width apart. I wish there was something to the scene, but as it is, there's nothing...

Little known fact, Equestria is in fact on the Discworld. They don't mention months and years so that they can avoid having to explain things such as the century of the fruit fly or what Turnwise, Widdershings, Rimward, and Hubward means. :smallbiggrin:

A mage with no soul can't cast any magic. A mage without control of his mind or his body can. Indeed ghosts with magic, which are nothing but impressions of the soul, prove that a body is not strictly necessary for casting magic. A mind is necessary because of the imago, the supernal image that manifests into reality. But one can be dominated, or lose one's mind and still form imagos, whereas the intact soul (or a soul-devouring lich-based facsimile) is a necessary component for magic.

I see we're discussing FlutterDash. I still can't decide on FlutterDash vs. TwiDash / TwiDash vs Twixie.

The only things I seem to be absolutely decided about at this point are (this is all head canon, of course):

RD is not straight (it's likely that she's bi). Also neither RD nor Fluttershy have siblings so even if they're not in love they are at the very least like sisters to each other. It is possible that RD has a crush on Fluttershy but she doesn't feel the same (this is the premise of my next major story, which is in fact a TwiDash story)

Ah. Well. It's good for a normal person but wiggy for me.
I've got 80+% of usability back, but that's about as good as its going to get. You don't realize how useful han strength is until it goes away and you can't do things. I'll never be able to use a long lever again, unless there's a certain level of tissue adhesion instead of just bone goop going on. The pressure on the bottom of my hand from swinging a mallet is uncomfortable, as is stopping it.

The bone seems to have turned inward a bit, too. So the muscles between the fourth an fifth bones of my palm are squished. It's distinctly uncomfortable, like wearing a glove or something that's just a bit too small; that claustrophobic feeling you get when you're taking off a shirt or jacket, and you get stuck, and no seriously this isn't funny get it off, is kind of omnipresent. I cn usually ignore it but when it's all I can focus on its a rather cerebral torture.

I also spaz out because my hands aren't symmetrical anymore. I couldn't have told you that was a thing (actually, I probably could come to think of it), but now that it's nigh irreversible it makes me grin my teeth. And the thing is, these are details I don't expect mos people o ever pay attention to. That level of body awareness is unusual, and really, really irritating. Ouch. Sorry to hear that. Not as bad as it could have been (I mean 80% is at least mostly functional, right?), but very not good at all even so.

I'd offer to slice your arm off and replace it with a Pale Master style Lich replacement except I have no idea how I would actually do that in practise. (And, perhaps not overly surprisingly, the Aotrs is not big into cybernetics.)

But hey, you know, my inbox is always open if you want to vent on anything major or minor psychological-like.

I mean, talking to ME about it probably won't, y'know, actually help (from a standpoint of lesser mortals), mind, but it's the thought or something, right?

(That goes for anyony else on ponythread of course, with the same warning. 'Cos if you think pony is bad for your state of mind...)

I shall continue to hope that things continue to improve then, or at least try to bully the universe into doing what I tell it from my end, and then maybe we'll meet on the middle or something...

It's definitely an interesting variant; male-Chrysalis replacing male-Cadence rather than Shining Armor. It probably makes more sense too, as otherwise you need Princess Cadence maintaining the barrier instead. I do have to agree that this version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMrq4bzYfjA) does it better, though.

If you're at the point where they're giving you training exercises, do them religiously and as perfectly as possible. Seems stupid, but my Mom had her hand torn up by a dog when she was younger and they got her back to about 95% strength with really disciplined practice of the physical therapy.

Oh dear Celestia, finally so close to being done writing Roots of a Heart, last chapter just needs editing now

It's so, so sad and yet so beautiful :smallfrown: I think it's the most bittersweet story I've ever written. I think I was about to tear up a bit at the end myself.

I've been worrying about it, but I really think the whole thing is coming together in this last chapter. Too bad it couldn't have done so from the start, because there are some really powerful ideas in it that I'm only really grasping now :smallfrown:

I approve of pretty much all humanized pony efforts, and these ones are spiffytacular!

I think the best solution for the horns is actually to have them wear tiaras, honestly. The princesses simply wear their crowns of course, and Twili's Elemental Crown replaces her normal tiara (as opposed to double stacking them.)

As for ships.

Well I really can't say as I have mixed emotions on all the ships. RD and Fluttershy seem more like sisters to me then any kind of relationship. Same with RD and AJ but more of battling cousins. Rarity is the hardest as she seems more destined to be with somepony like Fluer or who knows. Twilight and her books. Pinkie and the fourth wall seem the best.

In some of the fan fics in my mind I wish to write I am going to do some very odd pairings. I..am not going to spoil anything here as I want them to be a surprise. Still if I have to choose some pairings I say:

RD and Twlight
AJ and Rarity
Pinkie and Twilight
Fluttershy and Pinkie

For the mane 6. Beyond that it is all in the air.

Just for kicks, what's the WORST combination of those six you can think of? I would probably say

That one's harder, since the only ships I really see as a nightmare are Rarity-Dash, Rarity-AJ, and Fluttershy-Pinkie. Which leads to configurations of the remaining ponies that generally work in my mind, I can't think of a way to make all six miserable.

AJ and Pinkie would go horribly together I think, along with Rarity and Rainbow Dash. That leaves Twilight and Fluttershy, which could be miserable due to Twilight's somewhat neglectful nature. Effectively have her take the relationship for granted, with Fluttershy too shy to say anything about it.

My best list is probably the same Eakin's. That or its simply TwilightxHarem, with her being constantly exhausted trying to date them all at once. That would be hilarious.

There is no Blind Bag female G4 toy today, or any toy at all, besides, unlike Star Swirl who was consistently female in all generations including unprecedented G4 presence Lickety Split only appeared in one generation 30 years ago, and that was that (if you don't count vaguely similar G3 Lickity). It's prehistory having no bearing in this case.

Plus, I have done some research into Blind Bag canonicity, and besides giving a lot of ponies names, like Heartstrings or Breezie, Blind Bag ponies started appearing in show on Hasbro's orders. Well I am still a bit rough on ships in general. This is really the first fandom I look a them closely. In other fandoms it is mostly assumed as per canon. Either way I find it very interesting and love to play around with ideas on whom works with whom.

Normally opposites may attract but you have to look at it in a certain way, to me. One has to be the male and the other the female (not being sexist or anything just dunno how else to put it). The more masculine personality will be the alpha while the feminine one is beta, usually.

So the masculine personalities of the mane 6, to me, are RD, Rarity and AJ with the other three being feminine. As before RD and Flutter seem to sisterly to be a ship, not that I don't mind a how 'cest story but that is beyond the point. AJ fits well among mostly all of the other three do to being protective. Rarity is assertive and fits best with Flutter or Pinkie. But all this is my opinion.

Humanized ponies. Hmmm. Well from the pics I like them all but I would make some differences. Personally AJ and Twilight need a darker skin tone. A mocha for Twi and a more blonde coffee for AJ. RD needs shorter spikier hair, she just screams sk8er to me. Rarity looks just 100% perfect to me. Pinkie looks fine but for a girl who eats as much sweets as she does she needs more curves. I don't think I could come up with any combination of all the Mane 6 that I feel would work well. I can pair some of them, but not all six. I also think it's a little boring if all of them only date each other when there are some obvious and great ships if you expand the shipping pool a bit. Like Rarity is totally gonna end up with Fancy Pants, there's no way it can't happen, anything else - especially any of the mane 6 - are going to be poor choices for her.

Likewise with AJ and Pinkie, they're not too easy to ship within that tiny circle of friends. I suppose Thanqol did a great job with Twilight and AJ, and Pinkie Shy works a bit too, for some stories, but it's not ... super convincing in general. Not to me, at least.

It's like, you can come up with a way for almost any (reasonable) ship to work, if everything is made to fit around the idea of that ship, but you can't throw most ships into any random story and have it work. Only a few ships work in general because they don't need a whole lot of rationalization to appear viable to most people. Most ships need a lot of work and explainin' before people will accept the premise.

It's a matter of chemistry. He is everything Rarity dreamed Blueblood would be like, and more. He is clearly the complete polar opposite of Blueblood. Rich, charming and actually pleasant to be around. They fit perfectly together and really seemed to get along well. Why would they not keep in contact? And we do see them together at the end of the wedding episode, in fact. Rarity would probably go out of her way to keep in contact with somepony as important as him, if nothing else. And finally what is a bit of distance for ponies of such means?

I agree with Deadly here. Fancy liked Rarity as well as her friends. He is way more down to earth then Blueblood. Heck it seems him or Filthy Rich would be fine as they understand how more common ponies live. But seeing how Rarity knows Fancy more it seems a more logical pairing.

The Starswirl referenced in the show is clearly implied to be male, (Beard, male pronouns etc). He is historically important, and still well known and regarded in the correct circles.
Wouldn't it be more likely than not that his descendants would, from time to time, name their offspring after their most famous ancestor?

It's Hasbro canon, like it or not, unless you can show any proof or evidence otherwise. The existence of female G4 Starswirl is fact, implications of nickname or not. If they change it later, fine, but as it is, source that over-ridden all other forms of canon so far declared SS to be blue mare (with a lot of special attention no other "new" pony got) and no fan theory is going to change that.

Out of all of them...I honestly see Swallow and Gloryhole being in the show. Why? Glory being a hard working earth pony whom loves her job. Swallow being a friend of Fluttershy whom helps with the bird singing. Full name being Swallow Song.

Tea Bag needs to be a unicorn. Rim a pegasus that is with the Royal Guard. Snowball is innocent enough to also be in the show. Pole Dancer is just funny and needs to be a foal (dun ask why just popped into my head).

Of the gay shipping the only one that kinda make sense is TwiPie, and you have to thank my own Pinkie & Twi for confirmation on it's viability.

Alright. Now tell me why?

I don't think I could come up with any combination of all the Mane 6 that I feel would work well. I can pair some of them, but not all six. I also think it's a little boring if all of them only date each other when there are some obvious and great ships if you expand the shipping pool a bit. Like Rarity is totally gonna end up with Fancy Pants, there's no way it can't happen, anything else - especially any of the mane 6 - are going to be poor choices for her.

Likewise with AJ and Pinkie, they're not too easy to ship within that tiny circle of friends. I suppose Thanqol did a great job with Twilight and AJ, and Pinkie Shy works a bit too, for some stories, but it's not ... super convincing in general. Not to me, at least.

It's like, you can come up with a way for almost any (reasonable) ship to work, if everything is made to fit around the idea of that ship, but you can't throw most ships into any random story and have it work. Only a few ships work in general because they don't need a whole lot of rationalization to appear viable to most people. Most ships need a lot of work and explainin' before people will accept the premise.

Agreed within the Mane 6 the only two I would ship together is Flutterdash. As for Fancy Pants X Rarity I think that would likely work. Rarity does want to move to Canterlot (She says so pretty often), we have no evidence that Fleur is Fancy Pants marefriend (My new headcanon is that she is like that mechanic from TTGL)

Bah, Scoot ends up with everyones favorite camerapegusi, Sweetie ends up with Truffle Shuffle, and Applebloom gets everyone else in her class.:smallbiggrin: (Besides Twist.)

FlutterDash because
The two seem perfect for each other. We've already seen that Dash is willing to slow down for and protect Fluttershy. Rainbow Dash is constantly pushing her to be better, but almost never goes to far in doing so. Rainbow Dash is always willing to help Fluttershy and seems to want Fluttershy to be part of her life more and more. She goes out of her way to include Fluttershy as well as gives things up to make her happier.

Fluttershy is willing to push her boundaries for Rainbow Dash. She understands Rainbow Dash perhaps better then anypony else. Fluttershy is also one of the ponies who can take care of Dash. She can't keep up with Dash which is actually a good thing (Rainbow Dash cannot handle competition very well. This is why I think AppleDash is doomed to failure). She seems willing to join Rainbow Dash, as long as she can continue to care for animals she'll be fine. She already admires Rainbow Dash and tries to help Dash when she can.

TwilightXLuna or Celestia because
Of her devotion to Celestia. Her opinion matters most. As long as Celestia stands by Twilight she can handle anything, even being alone. I mean her stated wish for the best night ever? Is spending the night with Celestia :smalltongue: talking.

Twilight is one of the very few ponies who is willing to treat royalty as a pony instead of a princess. She does not fear them and is more then willing to help them as a friend.

Luna has a good chance with Twilight because I think she's one of the few ponies who could break through Twilight's devotion to Celestia in order to win her over. Luna already respects Twilight and is willing to trust her. As Twilight is one of the few ponies who can get past her being an Alicorn they make a good match. Furthermore Twilight is a pony who frequently pulls all nighters. She is also an astronomer so that's likely another plus in Luna's book.

These two don't really have much personality. (BonBon actually seems pretty inconsiderate) So there isn't much to make a case besides how much they hang around in the background together. It does seem like the two are dating though.

OctaviaXVinyl Scratch
There is literally no case made for this ship. The two seem to share night schedules which helps. (Every time we've seen either of them it has been late in the day. ) So it just depends on who they actually are. I like the fics I've read of them being together so that's why I like this ship.

FancypantsXRarity
Fancypants seems to be Rarity's dream stallion. He is at the very least interested in Rarity. Rarity does want to move to Canterlot and become famous so marrying Fancypants would help her ambitions as well. He also seems to be one of the few competent ponies in the Canterlot Elite and thus could have an equal relationship with Rarity.

Here's a thought on Dragon Society
Dragons don't tend to go on greed induced rampages at home because as soon as they start an adult will smack them down, hard.Taking away their 'horde'. This quickly teaches the young dragon restraint so they can actually keep their stuff. It also teaches them that physical power is of utmost importance.

Well, he has been growing. To be exact, compare a pic of him from the first episode to one from season two. He's getting bigger, at the very least. By the time the CmC are of good shipping age (teen's), he would probably be about as tall as a pony. Even better if we assume those teen dragons where not in there fifties and that Spike will undergo growth spurt.

Diving into the later issues are someone elses domain. I generaly avoid sad shiping stories as much as I can.

I have officially given up on maintaining a consistent colour scheme with the CADed Jalyrkieons (the army wil have one, though); partly because the first model was a different colour set (C&C GLA colour scheme in fact, as before the Jalyrkieons, it was nominallt slated for them...) So I thought sod it, may as well make them as colourful as their inspirations at this stage...!

A no-prize for anyone who actually recongises the shape.

I think I have aired my opinions on Spike, Rarity and Spike/Rarity (which there is strong evidence (relatively) for) often enough not to have to restate in detial...

Short (relatively) version for the newercomers: Spike is old enought to be left alone for days and even put in charge of other dependants, and thus I place him at mid-late-teen equivilent age (older than the CMC). Age gaps are irrelevant to relationships anyway (provided minimums are met, which as I say I ascribe Spike to being, or very close to). If Spike out-ages everypony, then shipping him with any of the CMC has identical problems to shipping him with Rarity (et al); if not, the gap is meaningless shortly anyway. I ferverantly do not like the proposition ("popular" in the earlier days of the fandom) that Spike will end up miserable and alone (because Spike is clearly by nature antithetical to the traditional dragon mindset in personality, being personable and preferring to socialise), after out-living anyone1 (because for cryin' out loud, if you can't get a happy ending in My Little Pony, then seriously what the hell); if it comes to that, there's always the Lúthien Tinúviel option. (Surely the much-vaunted power of love would find a way... (If not - then it clearly isn't all it's cracked up to be - good news for my side, then!)) However, I am also fairly convinced Spike is also a different subspecies of dragon anyway, which may not follow the same rules.

Alternatively, see It Takes a Village.

1Leaving aside the fact that there is no direct evidence of pony lifespan anywhere; and if anything, there is the suggestion that Granny Smith could be extremely old (as in hundreds of years, making her a great- (times n) grandmother to AJ)).

in humans, the difference between someone 50 and 60 is fairly small. the difference between someone 16 and 21, despite being a smaller span of time, is HUGE.

so putting celestia with twilight seems odd, but it wouldn't in 10ish years.

spike is obviously too young for rarity, but if spike matures faster (and by all indications he does so significantly), they could have a relationship eventually.

I'd read it either way, i just like to know going in.

There is that. Though I don't think the subject of Spike aging alone has come up since Dragon Quest (and certainly ther hasn't been the same spate of Spike-is-old-and-everyone-else-is-dead fics that there were when I first started reading pony fanfic.)

I'd have to disagree. Like absolutely everything else about a proper relationship, it boils down to the individual's personalities (which may or may not include similar levels of maturity in personality) and the compatability thereof. Anything else is just numbers, which have no bearing on, well, anything.

Trying to define acceptable relationships by relative age is just as stupid and ridiculous as defining them by relative height; indeed, as silly, as say, trying to fit the entire complexity of every sentient being in the universe, with their diverse drives and thought and feelings, into nine pidgeonholed categories. (This does not mean people do not try. That merely makes them idiots, however; an all-to-common state in the universe.)

The ONLY restriction on relationships I hold to is the minimum threshold for legality (i.e. physical/mental maturity of both participants jusifiably enbles them to be able to decide of their own free will to enter a relationship); aside from that, I see no restictions in age, gender, species or anything else.

This does not mean I want to necessarily KNOW about it, however.

I have to agree, not least because I really don't see Fancypants any more credible than any other Rarity ship (and less so than Spike/Rarity, though I will admit, that is preference speaking). Were he not mentioned occasionally after the episode, I would have found him utterly forgettable.

Overall, however, I have no particular preferences for shipping (I support Spike/Rarity mostly because everypony was using Spike as their punching bag in the early days, and it's at least a subversion of the tired old cliche of younger-girl/older-guy); with the sole exception of anything that includes Discord, which I avoid like the plague. I absolutely cannot see anything remotely positive in Discord-shipping at all, as I an see no way in which it wouldn't be manipulative or abusive, and above all, out-and-out squick.

I said the government could help not completely take the responsibility. I can't say if it would be as healthy a relationship. It may be an obstacle but I don't see why it would unhealthy in comparison.

Humanized ponies. Hmmm. Well from the pics I like them all but I would make some differences. Personally AJ and Twilight need a darker skin tone. A mocha for Twi and a more blonde coffee for AJ. RD needs shorter spikier hair, she just screams sk8er to me. Rarity looks just 100% perfect to me. Pinkie looks fine but for a girl who eats as much sweets as she does she needs more curves. I would love to be a part of this, but I just don't think I'll have the time to do it justice.

I'll see what I can cook up. I don't know that I need priority though; I've got a bit f a full platter that's working tenuously because not all of them go on weekend hiatus at once. I have yet to see what having them all in full swing will do.

It's still in early concept stages anywhoo. At the moment I'm just conceptually mapping out some areas we might visit, and beginning to compile a list of potential NPCs'. If anyone has some tips, based off their own experience GMing or playing, feel free to toss them in my direction ^^;

I don't think I can nail down much more in detail of the plot until I get some players on board though. If anyone else is interested let me know!

what's important is that both parties are of the same maturity.

in humans, the difference between someone 50 and 60 is fairly small. the difference between someone 16 and 21, despite being a smaller span of time, is HUGE.

so putting celestia with twilight seems odd, but it wouldn't in 10ish years.

It's Hasbro canon, like it or not, unless you can show any proof or evidence otherwise. The existence of female G4 Starswirl is fact, implications of nickname or not. If they change it later, fine, but as it is, source that over-ridden all other forms of canon so far declared SS to be blue mare (with a lot of special attention no other "new" pony got) and no fan theory is going to change that.
Starswirl the Bearded being male is also canon, so unless he is quite feminine-looking, they are no doubt different ponies. :smalltongue: We've also never seen any toys of ponies not living today, so claiming the Star Swirl toy is Starswirl the Bearded - a 1000+ dead pony - is even more suspect.

Honestly, I've always been under the impression that Celestia and Luna internalized most of their issues with immortality (Luna seems like she would have difficulty completely opening up among to, for lack of a better term, commoners, while Celestia wouldn't want to cause her subjects any concern over her well being).

It's a matter of chemistry. He is everything Rarity dreamed Blueblood would be like, and more. He is clearly the complete polar opposite of Blueblood. Rich, charming and actually pleasant to be around. They fit perfectly together and really seemed to get along well. Why would they not keep in contact? And we do see them together at the end of the wedding episode, in fact. Rarity would probably go out of her way to keep in contact with somepony as important as him, if nothing else. And finally what is a bit of distance for ponies of such means?

It's still in early concept stages anywhoo. At the moment I'm just conceptually mapping out some areas we might visit, and beginning to compile a list of potential NPCs'. If anyone has some tips, based off their own experience GMing or playing, feel free to toss them in my direction ^^;

They are absolutely not foals. Pound and Pumpkin are foals, Scootaloo is a filly and Rumble a colt which is not the same thing at all. And since I've always considered cutie marks to be the pony equivalent of reaching puberty, to me they are probably around 12-13 years old. Which is why I could have shown them rutting behind the barn and that'd have been fine too (though quite a bit more mature than what I was going for)

And even if you were to assume they are younger, there's nothing unusual or wrong about children kissing each other. They do it all the time, you know, playing around when adults aren't looking. Heck, I probably kissed my first girl when I was 5 or so, to talk nothing of what else went on behind the bushes in kindergarten. You'd be surprised what kids get up to with their friends, but I wager a lot of people forget what they did as kids when they grow older. (We also grow a lot more shy, I sure wish I had the courage and confidence of my childhood self, who got a lot more girls than I do :smallredface:)

So to Haydes with the criticism. I wanted to draw something cute and innocent, and I feel that's what I've done. If some people get all worked up over it that's not my problem. I'm really proud of that comic, I feel it's my best work yet, and I think it's really, really cute.[/rant]

Thought it must be admitted, it won't actually have a saw blade on top (those aren't really helpful in armoured combat!), but a regular turret. That might homage it a bit, I dunno. (For one, I'd struggle to CAD a complex shape like the vines.)

Canon as it is used involves a narrative. Toys don't have those. And if The toys are what defines canon then that lets in all the sideline products such as the trading cards.
The show offers plenty of incentive to use good ol horse sense; no reason to toss that aside now.

Decide now if it's going to be based off of your plot or off of the character's personalities and goals. Because the two are crazy different.

A game where the point is to go to the dragon's lair, triumph, and save the princess in time to come back and find it was all a rise to depose the duke of Whinnyapolis will play the same no matter who the characters are. That's my definition of plot based.

A game with a lot of hooks and a lot of asking the players "so what do you want to do?" and the entire story system unfolds based on how they act an interact is a character based game.

The two have remarkably different requirements at the upper levels. Further, they've become hard to differentiate because most games mix the elements. D&D modules have specific goals and benchmarks but try to be open to how it is achieved and whether you follow through, succeed or fail. That's mostly plot but with character not precluded, for example.

So really, ask yourself, and ten tell the players; will this game have a plot of the week to go adventure on? Or will it be free range so make sure you have interesting personality? That's the biggest question for an early DM/GM/ST, I think. The biggest hurdle. Having a game the players want to play.

Either one is fine, but knowing the difference could save your life.

Honestly, I've always been under the impression that Celestia and Luna internalized most of their issues with immortality (Luna seems like she would have difficulty completely opening up among to, for lack of a better term, commoners, while Celestia wouldn't want to cause her subjects any concern over her well being).

The trouble there is, we have no reason to think a naturally immortal creature would angst over any of this.

If a creature exists which has an exceptionally long lifespan, it can be taken for granted they have coping mechanisms to take this into account. They would have to! I recall it vein considered a scientific fact that the older you are, the faster time moves for you. How would they accommodate this? Forgetfulness? Gallophreyan regeneration? Just sort of general Fey natures? Do they abstract it to a game and play god like it was Simcity?

There would be a mechanism. Saying that an inferred lack is proof that they cannot be eternal doesn't hold water. Though it's an interesting angle to explore. We know that whether or not Celestia is and was eternal, she wasn't always there, for example.

They are absolutely not foals. Pound and Pumpkin are foals, Scootaloo is a filly and Rumble a colt which is not the same thing at all. And since I've always considered cutie marks to be the pony equivalent of reaching puberty, to me they are probably around 12-13 years old. Which is why I could have shown them rutting behind the barn and that'd have been fine too (though quite a bit more mature than what I was going for)

And even if you were to assume they are younger, there's nothing unusual or wrong about children kissing each other. They do it all the time, you know, playing around when adults aren't looking. Heck, I probably kissed my first girl when I was 5 or so, to talk nothing of what else went on behind the bushes in kindergarten. You'd be surprised what kids get up to with their friends, but I wager a lot of people forget what they did as kids when they grow older. (We also grow a lot more shy, I sure wish I had the courage and confidence of my childhood self, who got a lot more girls than I do :smallredface:)

So to Haydes with the criticism. I wanted to draw something cute and innocent, and I feel that's what I've done. If some people get all worked up over it that's not my problem. I'm really proud of that comic, I feel it's my best work yet, and I think it's really, really cute.[/rant]

in contrast, I just had an argument for an hour about whether or not bacteria could do anything at all to an alien. For an hour. We discussed how the distance from the star, the type of star, the basic composition of a planet, of life, of it's possible variation, could affect such things. My stance was that on a mechanical level there is no immunity, just resistance, an bacteria function on a mechanical and chemical level predominantly.

And it ended civilly.

And then an Xbox buddy, Derpy, jumped on and wondered why no one had told him the seventh friendship is witchcraft had been released. It's been an interesting enough experience that I ha to share.
