For fives years, the faithful of Sandpoint have attended church in temporary structures erected after fire destroyed the previous temple, and while their new religious leader, was helpful, kind, and wise, church wasn't the same. Now, the new cathedral is finally done. All that remains is for the Swallowtail Festival to renew the site's blessing from the gods and it will be as if Sandpoint fire had never occurred.

The morning before the festival you arrive into the town seeing people busy at work to make last moment preperations for the events throughout the day. Merchants busily take care of those doing business, and the general excitement seems to invigorate the town.

There are only two inns in the city, White Deer and the Rusty Dragon, so if you are from out of town these places are willing to house you.

For those that wish to explore the town before the game starts I've set up this, while others have the chance to complete their character sheets. Also gives you the chance to familiarize yourself with the city

Alyson wondered what her friends back in Lastwall would think of her now, as she sipped her drink in the Rusty Dragon. At least, the ones who survived. Alyson didn't even know if any did, except Riian who was lucky enough to leave the village before the attack.

Unlike the rest, Alyson has achieved her dreams, but had made the mistake of assuming the phrase 'be careful what you wish for' only applied when dealing with djinni. Never had her bow felt heavier. Her mentor, Lawrence Symonds, had been murdered by the very people he was supposed to protect in a desperate attempt to please a man probably killed them anyway. And the other paladins wondered why a year ago, Alyson had decided to focus her efforts on fighting monsters instead of men.

As she caught a look at her weary face in one of the many reflective surfaces in the inn, she knew she needed to make her decision soon. Should she hang up her bow?

Conrrat arrives in the Rusty Dragon, immediately appearing to be an enigma to the townsfolk, dressed in gray robes and a hood. Outside, a hawk perches on the sign, eyeing people who pass by curiously, waiting for its master.

"I would speak with the proprietor, please."

His voice is calm and even, slightly unnerving even with the clear Galtan accent.

Conrrat
"What business do you have Ameiko, sweetie? She's busy preparing for the huge lunch at the festival for tomorrow. I can take care of preparing a room for your young sir."says a halfling woman, rather kindly. She is rather insistent that she can meet Conrrat's accommodations and won't bother the inn's owner unless she can tell her why the stranger requested her.

The inn is filled with people eating and drinking various foods that have their orgins in exotic Tian. Merrily people talk to each other over food on various communal tables and quite clearly the Rusty Dragon Inn is packed with people here for the festival, as well as locals not busy with their own preparations.

Off to the side a group of three Varasian Minstrel playing a lute and drum while the third dances and sings of a far off city of gold. The small show is enjoyed by the towns folk who follow the song with their oohs and aws.

A group of older boys are huddled around the Help Wanted board discussing with one another if they should take a job, using it more as a springboard for their fantasies than for anything serious.

Everyone seems to be in a celebratory mood as someone shouts out, "Drinks for all!" This is followed by the clink of a bag of coins hitting the bar top and a few hired hands running out and serving the party goers.

"I'm in need of information as well as lodgings, and I've been told Mistress Kaijitsu is knowledgeable about such things. And I plan on staying for quite some time, more than the average guest, so I'd prefer to go over details with my potential landlady personally."

"Its a holiday to Desna. This year's is more important though as we are using it to dedicate the new cathedral to the Six. If you are really interested stick around for it. Father Zantus and Mayor Deverin have gone all out on it, as has most of the city. Should be an event to remember Sweetie. "

After parting ways with Durriken at the city entrance Halan takes a moment to appreciate the sights of Sandpoint. As his former client makes for the Hagfish, Halan instead walks to the White Deer Inn.

After entering the Inn, Halan approaches the proprietor and says, "Good day to you. I am interested in securing lodgings for the next two to three days."

Alyson listened in at the boys looking over the Wanted board, nostalgic for that same sense of idealism. "Trust me, I found a book on magic. Soon, I'll be able to cast spells and do this stuff" one of them - a guy Alyson thought she heard being called Kyus - say, to the laughter and mocking of a couple of others. She was tempted to say something, but decided to let them keep their dreams. Unlike her, they would likely be lucky enough not to see those dreams realised. Unless Kyus could really learn in one book what a trained wizard needed several years of training and at least three times as many books.

Couldn't resist making a reference to my Jade Regent character, who is basically a guy who spends most of his time at the Rusty Dragon and wishes to become an adventurer, before finding several books on how to become a summoner

Conrrat walks over to the lad.

"Your enthusiasm is admirable, but know that one book alone does not contain all the answers."

He then tacks a parchment of his own to the board asking for locals willing to act as guides and excavators for an archaeological expedition in the area. He hoped the Pathfinder grant money would come soon so he actually had something to pay for supplies and employees with.

The White Deer is more of a somber affair, the inn serving game from the Tickwood in its tavern area. The smells of vension and fine wines fill the area aromatically and friendly conversation accompanies the sound of a Reed Pipe. People are in a good mood as the environment is calm and relaxing.

A quiet Shoanti man named Gabridan Viskalai takes Halan's money for the the three nights and escorts him to a spacious room on the third floor which overlooks the cathedral. The space is clean and well kept while displaying a number of nice looking animal motifs. He sets down your items in the room and quietly says, "Enjoy the festival," before heading back to the ground floor to resume his business.

In the room Halan finds a list of food with prices and when it is served.

Derrick sits at the Rusty Dragon's bar, chatting idly with the Tian lady next to him, before looking up at the new guests walking in. This is the weekend of the Swallowtail Festival, isn't it? Kaede, mind if I spend the weekend? I'll be sure to bring an elk in for you and yer ma."

If planting seeds for Jade Regent is what we're doing, may as well toss in a detail or two.

Looking over to the man posting a notice on the board, Derrick comes over, slapping the man on the back as he reads the poster. "Guide work, eh? Name's Derrick Johanesburg. I'm a hunter and lumberjack 'round these parts, and I know the area pretty well. What sort of excavation are you in for? I think I might be able to help."

Conrrat jerks forward, clearly not being the kind of man used to getting slapped on the back. He turns towards Derrick and shakes his hand, pleasantly surprised at finding a volunteer so quickly.

With little else to spend her time, she overheard Conrrat and Derrick, or at least that's the names she thought she heard, talking about an expedition. "I might also be able to help" she said. "I'm an archer by training, but should be adaptable. And something nice and easy is just what I need. Alyson Cait." Nice, easy work. Moving over to the bar, he drops onto a stool and rubs his leg, a pained expression flashing over his face that he hastily conceals. "The Late Unpleasentness happened five years ago. Much of the anticipation of this celebration is because it feels like the end of that with the new catherdral being built."

The younger fellow talking to you looks like he's barely an adult, but that he remebers the nightmares, and doesn't like being reminded of the fear he felt growing up. His manner seems lifted when his mind is brought back by the happy times surronding the coming festival.

"Mr. Conner-rat De-sort-ray? I'd be happy to take you to Mr. Quink if you are ready. Its all the way cross town though, so I can even take you on tour if you want to give me a little guide money."

He smiles with a confident charm.

Conrrat fishes a shield from his pocket.

"I won't offend you by paying with Chelish money, will I?"

For those confused, he gave the guy 1 sp. In Cheliax, a silver coin is called a shield, and since Conrrat comes from Korvosa, which is Cheliax-Lite, I assume he'd have grown up using that kind of terminology for money. The book only discusses monetary names for Cheliax, Andoran, Katapesh, Absalom and Brevoy.

Conrrat, as you leave the Rusty Dragon Inn onto Market street your guide points out the stables next door and tells you that is the Goblin Squash Stables and shows you the rather grisley ears on display there as the reason for the name. He also points out the Brewery by the Sandpoint bridge as being responsible for most of the fine spirits in the city. Across Market street he notes the Sandpoint Mercantile League which serves as a sort of customs and post office. To the west of the Inn you notice the Meat market.

As continue foward you see adults decorating Market Square, while an odd group of childern play a game of whilste ball. Tomorrow looks like they'll have merchants from all over Varisia setting up here to sell their wares. He takes you past that and the Fish Market onto Water Street, making special note to tell you about the Hagfish a favorite Tavern in town, named so because of the Hagfish kept in the Aquarium there. The boy points out this place as a center of entertainment in the area. Before he turns you onto Main Street.

On main street he points out the General Store and the Turandarok Acadamy, where the boy notes that he grew up. He takes with pride about the part-school and part-orphanage and Ilsoari who raised him when he himself was orphaned. As he continues to walk up Main Street he stops at a store called the Curious Goblin. The sign out in front of the shop shows a wide-eyed Coplan reading an upside down book nearly as tall as him.

"Often times Quink is at the book shop here. Likes to read here or talk with the owner Mr. Haladan, much like my own teacher Mr.Ganderthus. Do you want to check here before continueing on?" The boy peers in the store window. "He's inside if you want to go in."

Henric, the young maid pours a drink and arranges a messanger to fetch Naffer Wosk. The message is returned within the hour with a request to meet with him in the Catherdral when it is opened around midday, the day after the festival.

Alyson was one of the last to retire, these days preferring as little sleep as she could maintain. It was either that, or far too many nightmares. The attack on her village, Lawrence's death, so many others...

Quink spends the rest of the evening talking with Conrrat about the area's ruins but admits he's more of a scholar of the lost empire, and offers to help him research more so that he'll know the signs of a Thassilonian ruin. Quink lets Conrrat know that while the area has more than some interest to a scholar that the easier areas have been more than likely cleared out already and that the areas that do have archaeological relevance are likely incredibly dangerous, given that the Thassalions used giants as slaves and were cruel and viscous tyrants.

Quink's impression of Conrrat's academic skills are enough that he asks you to board at his house while you stay in Sandpoint. He believes that use of his notes will help you find potential dig sites, and allows you to use his library.

The next morning the Festival starts, the square in front of the church fills with locals and travellers hoping to take part in the festivies. Merchant tents featuring food, clothes, crafts and other souvenirs line the square. The turnout for the festival seems to be very respectable. The first of the opening speeches is given by Mayor Deverin, whose friendliness and excitment spreads easily to crowd as she greets locals and travelers alike to their fair town. She even notes the they managed to Larz Rovanky from his Tannery to attend whichs draws laughter for most of the crowd as Larz is a notorious workaholic.

Sheriff Hemlock's dour mood has a similiar effect on the crowd, damping their enthausism, as he talks about fire safety for the evening pyre and a request for a moment of silence for those that lost their lives in the fire that had destoried the previous church.

The next scheaduled speaker was to be local nobleman, Lonijiku Kaijistu, but sudden illiness has prevented from attending the cermony.

Derrick
You aren't really surprised by this as Lonijiku is know for disliking frivolty and festivals.

Instead Cyrdak Drokkus of the Sandpoint theatre is brought up to give his speech. The slightly irreverent account of how they funded and contructed the new catherdral is highlighted with Cyrdak's entertaining threatrics. He ends it with a reminder to come and see "The Harpy's Curses" starting Magnimarian diva Allishanda as the Harpy Queen. The buzz in the crowd over her fame seems nearly electric.

The opening speeches then conclude when Father Zantus steps on the stage thanks everyone for coming to the festival and declares the Festival began.

Alyson was skilled at archery, but she decided she wasn't skilled enough to hedge her bets on the red target. However, she decided to try two shots at it, before attempting to hit the more reasonable green target with her other four shots.

Sadly, most of her shots were not up to her usual excellence. THey hit hard, for the most part, but they were not as well aimed as they were supposed to be. She felt a stab at her pride, but not all the shots were bad, and it was only a competition.

Going to take care of the games in the OOC thread.

As the morning games conclude the residents are gathered for the Swallowtail Release. The Noon time sun blairs above Father Zantus as his acolytes wheel a large covered wagon into the square. He tells a short parable of how Desna first fell to Golarion and was nursed back to health by a blind child. She transformed this child into an immortal butterfly as a reward for her aid. Afterwards the acolytes release thousands of swallowtail butterflies into the air. They flutter as a furious storm appearing as a riot of color, seeming to even dance to the loud and joyous cheers of the crowd.

Afterwards is lunch is served for free, at the expense of Sandpoint's Inn and Tavrens. Each tries to impress, bringing out their best dishes. It seems as much an oppertunity to get new customers to the merchants as it is to feed a hungry crowd. Ameiko Kaijitsu's curry spiced salmon and early winterdrop mead overshadow the rest by far including the Hagfish's lobster chowder and the White Deer's peppercorn venison. The tavernkeeps jolly serve their dishes. Phillius, Derrick, Alyson, Halan, Henric and Conrrat get seated at the same table with Hannah Velerin, the town healer, Sabyl Sorn, a monk of Irori, Bilivar Wheen the Wheelwright, and Aesrick Battlehorn the Carpenter's Guildmaster.

Conrrat greatly enjoys the curry spiced salmon and seeks Ameiko out.

"You have my compliments for this delightful dish," he tells her in Tien, bowing politely as he does so.

Henric tucks into a plate of Venison with great gusto, savouring the meaty flavours. "I'll stick to this," He tells his closest table mate, "Exotic flavours don't really settle well with my stomach."

Alyson was surprised how much she was enjoying herself, and Am [eiko's exotic food was truly wondrous to try. She always did enjoy unique food.

With Conrat having left their table to find Ameiko, Alyson turned her attention to the others on the table. "You are missing out. Don't think I've had as nice a meal since my own mother's cooking. Though, of course, the life of a paladin isn't the most conducive to fine dining"

"Its a shame deary that your work takes you so far from your mother," Hannah says to Alyson, "strong women are made stronger by other strong women." The older midwife chuckles a little as she sprinkles some herbs over her food.

Halan listens intently at the priest's tale, taking the time to appreciate this story of the foreign yet familiar goddess. As the priest ends the tale and the food is spread before him on the table, he is immediately reminded of the hunger he worked up during the morning's games and he begins with some of Ameiko's salmon.

Hearing Alyson's comment, Halan says, "Then our circumstances are similar. I have also traveled far from my home and family tp see these lands."

Conrrat waits for Ameiko to respond, since she seems to be ignoring him, or didn't hear him.
