Monstrous races encouraged

We have a new DM trying his hand at the task next week and he created a pathfinder setting where monstrous races are common place. He has stated that he wants players to choose a 2-4 CR race that will be converted into a template and change our ECL. (for example, we start at level 5, but if we choose half-dragon + standard race, we start at level 3)

So what are some good options / fun combinations you all can think of?

I have a few ideas but a human / half-dragon paladin would just be too game breaking...really I just think of half dragon because its easy and the lowest CR I can get away with.

All things pathfinder are allowed. 3.5 would need to be asked for.

Are you using strictly Pathfinder, or Pathfinder mixed with 3.5?

For some reason a Jacklewere keeps jumping to mind. Its like a reverse Lycanthrope... with some fun little abilities too, all in a nice CR2 package.

You could mention our community based monster classes (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182724) if he's looking for a way to make his life easier.
