Hey playground,

I used term "Inquisition", but generally, this thread is about detecting baddies doing bad things in 3.5. Even Core offers quite a few spells that enable rather good tracking down of people who would go and kill people/pets, but what I am asking here, is which spells would present a "standard array" for an Inquisitor in 3.5? Guy comes on a murder scene and must get as much info as he can (or find a missing child, find the enchanter who drove person mad, etc ...). Level cap is 5, so no spells above five.

here is what I have so far (divine spells are specially marked):

0: Detect magic (if magic was used for murder)
1: Identify (if some interesting item is found on murder site)
2: Detect Thoughts (good for interrogation)
See Invisibility (redundant spell, MAY be usefull sometimes)
3: Tongues (generally useful)
(divine) Speak with the dead (i think this one is obvious)
4: Detect Scrying (generally useful)
Scrying (generally useful)
Locate Creature (redundant spell, MAY be usefull sometimes since culprits) are very rarely seen before they do evil deeds)
(divine) Discern lies (generally useful)
5: Contact Other Plane (this is pretty good, but volatile)
Prying Eyes (generally useful)
Telepathic Bond (generally useful)
(divine) Raise dead (ultimate trolling on murderer)
(divine) True seeing (generally useful)

Maybe not a optimized option, but detect evil can help a little. A good search check goes a long way too.

Capped at level 5?

Locate Object (Clr3) can be helpful, if you can determine a murder weapon.

Speak with Plants (Drd3) might be situationally useful.

Why not just look at the PF Inquisitor?

Object Reading! (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/objectReading.htm) Ok, so it's technically a psionic power, not a spell.. but it's also available in the form of a decently cheap magic item. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/items/universalItems.htm#glovesofObjectReading)
