Alternatives to Darkvision

Darkvision is used a lot in the monster manual. I feel it gets a bit boring when there's little variety.

Anyone have ideas for alternative means for monsters and such to "see" in the total darkness? Bats are one example, of course.

Detect Magic (magic items would glow), Infrared....and if all else fails...area of effect. > . >
