View Full Version : Old games you still play a lot

Many games are soon forgotten, or cherished but never taken out to be played again.

But I was wondering, what old games do you still have in your "active games library" instead of the "nostalgic value shelf"?

I am currently doing about my 7th playthrough of Warcraft III. And for the first time, I made it to the final level on Hard difficulty. Since I first finished the game 10 years ago and it was taunting me "now play it again on hard", I've been waiting for this. I can do this!

I also still hold Knights of the Old Republic dearly. It's a lot like Mass Effect 0 and together with the Tales of the Jedi comics it has actually become my favorite Star Wars period by far. 9 years is still pretty old.

Metal Gear Solid is even older going close to 14 years. I don't play it that often, since it's very story heavy, but I think I get it out about once per year and then do the whole series.

Honorable Mention goes to FreeSpace. It's 14 years old, but you can play it with the FreeSpace 2 engine, which was incredibly good 13 years ago and with texture and lighting effects mods, you could totally convince any kid that this is an indy game that was released two months ago. Because there's a good chance the kids never heard of it, because they weren't born yet when the game was released.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 without a doubt. It's the only game I have a shortcut to on my desktop.

Master of Magic. I've been playing the game for 18 years now, though obviously with some time in between.

I like these threads when they pop up.

I will make time to play Front Mission 3 and Final Fantasy Tactics. I own other console games that I simply cannot play anymore, either from the lack of the actual console or non-existent backwards compatibility. It just feels like these kinds of games aren't made on the stay-at-home consoles anymore.

On the computer I frequently turn to Master of Orion 2 and X-COM: UFO Defense.

I still have Civilization 4 and Galactic Civilisations 2 in my installed game library--I fire them up now and again to have a play. X3: Terran Conflict has been on there continuously for the last 4 years as well, although it's a few months since I played it.

Games that are much older than that tend to get installed as and when I get the urge--I've installed GTA: San Andreas, completed it, and then uninstalled it again three times, for example. (And if TIE Fighter was ever re-released through GOG I'd snap it up in a second!).

My brother. I don't have HoM&M3, but I have Heroes Chronicles, which tends to satisfy that craving whenever it rears its beloved head.

System Shock 2.
X-COM
Total Annihilation
Tiberian Sun (It's free now! Freeeee!)
Fallout Tactics
Age of Wonders (If I could get it working on my laptop.)
As mentioned above; Final Fantasy Tactics

I don't have them all currently, but I find myself going back and playing at least one of them every few months.

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 plus X-packs get played almost yearly... still haven't beaten either one.

Final Fantasy 3/6 I own this in nearly every format that it has come out on, and still havent beaten it.

Final Fantasy Tactics Same as above, but I've beaten it repeatedly and still have fun with it.

Chrono Trigger Same as FF3/6 except i've gotten 4 of the rediculous amount of different endings.

Dungeon Master: A REALLLY old dungeon crawl game that came out on the atari computer system..... It's rediculously hard with a fair amount of roguelike elements.... haven't even come close to beating it and i bust it out every couple of months.

Diner Dash. And there is one game I really wish I could play right, but no matter what I did it just doesnt work anymore. Robert E Lee's Civil War. This game is OLD. Its so old 256 color was cutting edge, windows 3.1 was fancy high end stuff, I used to be happy when my internet download rate was a whole 7 kbps. (it was usually 3-4) It was an awesome, turn based strategy game, with a hexagon map. You could move units a certain distance per turn or a far less distance and still attack, or just attack. You had to worry about morale, ammo, take elevation into account, tons of stuff like that. You could fight through most of the major battles of the civil war as either side, and they even threw in a fictional battle in washington. You got so many turns per battle, and the goal was to earn a victory. You had minor and major strategic victories that were judged by relative losses, units on the field, overall morale, etc. I played the hell out of that game.

I totally remember that game Traab. I also remember I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing. I remember causing more casualties but losing almost every battle. I remember not knowing if dismounted or mounted cavalry were better. I remember looting guns and trying to figure out what kind of gun to assign to each brigade.

I would play it to hell and back today.

Touhou and Pokemon never get old. I'll play them till I'm dead.

I'd still play Soul Calibur 2 if I had a PS2, it's better than 4 and 5 combined. While it lacked Create a Fighter, it had an indepth Weapons Master mode that I spent 200 hours on.

Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2. Best RTS game EVER.

Golden Axe/ Sttreets of Rage. Still a good game for people to play when no-one can agree. One friend wants to play Assassins Creed while the other wants to play Resident Evil? Make them play Golden Axe together, they'll have a blast!

A lot of the games that I play regularly are older ones. Many have already been mentioned: Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasy Tactics, Planescape: Torment, kotor2, etc.

Some that weren't mentioned: Mega Man X, Super Mario RPG, Star Ocean 2, Secret of Evermore, Mechcommander Gold, Super Earth Defense Force.

The windows version of Civilisation from 1993. Every now and then I'll load it up, start a nice easy prince game and obliterate the universe. Very fun. Was the first computer game I played, ignoring educational ones.

And Heroes of Might and Magic III is another that I go back to time and time again. In fact, all of the Might and Magic RPG series I go back to over and over. At one point I had spreadsheets for my characters so that I could work out my exact strategy to get them leveled up and have their skills upgraded. :smalltongue:

Others that I'll go back to every now and again are the various Sierra city building games - Caesar III, Pharoah, Zeus, Emperor. My favourite is probably Zeus, but I enjoy all of them.

And lastly, I don't know if it counts as old seeing as it's the upgraded version, but I play OpenTTD again and again, mostly due to the memories I have of the good old Transport Tycoon Deluxe I played when I was little.

Heroes of Might & Magic III is a timeless classic. I play it multiplayer with one of my friends once in a while, never lost its appeal.

On a related note I also start up Might & Magic VII once in a while - just have so many nostalgic memories connected to that game, and even though I know it like the back of my hand at this point, I still enjoy taking a new party through it once in a while (sometimes challenging myself with weird combos, like an all-sorceror team, to keep it fresh).

These two:

Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 plus X-packs get played almost yearly... still haven't beaten either one.

Master of Orion 2
I also occasionally run a random map of Warlords III: Darklords Rising. Opening the campaign or scenario select menus crashes my computer, but random maps work just fine.

Another gem of a game I play is Escape Velocity Nova.

Every now and then, I'll run Diablo II, but it's currently been replaced by Borderlands, which is basically the same thing but with guns (and ten years or so newer).

And I *would* have Heroes III on that list, but I can't get it to run under Win7 and I'd prefer not to have to buy it again from GoG. Also in this category is Civilization: Call to Power.

X-COM
Final Fantasy I-VII
Chrono Trigger
WarCraft III
StarCraft
Diablo II
Sonic III
Dungeon Keeper
Knights of the Old Republic
Wonder Boy in Monster World
Super Mario Bros. (SNES)

Whatever I do, these games keep popping up in my life, among many others. I just can't keep away from them for long.

I would play it to hell and back today.

Mounted is better, but I generally only used cavalry to harass runners, because those guys could book it when they broke. I found the best strategy was to open each turn with pounding whatever enemy units had the highest morale with my canons, then attacking the same unit as many times as I could, with flanking when possible, to crush them. If I could surround a unit, then they couldnt escape, and I was able to hit them like 4 times in a row from behind, making them try to run, fail, and be captured or killed.

My favorite battle was the multi day gettysburg. I would send my confederate cavalry to bait the enemy army into chasing them in circles, while my main army took the high ground and dug in hardcore. By the time the enemy got there, they had lower morale, and had been pounded for the last 2-3 turns by massive batteries of canon, which made them even more likely to run. It was a delicate balancing act, because im pretty sure I was outnumbered 2 or 3 to 1, but by digging in and letting them take more of the losses, they tended to break faster than I did.

I never did very well with the full campaign, I always played it single maps, so the whole upgrading my units thing was never a part of my game play really.

Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (I have hundreds of hours on multiple files)
Pokemon Gen 1-2 (The other ones aren't old enough to be "old")
Banjo-Kazooie

A lot of these games hold a special place in heart (obviously, or else playing them 10+ years later would be strange)

I played it a couple of times.
But I played ToB once right after release and still never got around to make my next full playthrough. I got halfway through BG2 a couple of time, but never make it to Spellhold. I just don't like playing games on PC anymore, especially long ones. Maybe in a couple of years when I get a tablet PC that can run it, then I can play it on the couch, on the balcony, or when passing two free hours at university. Then I think I'd do it again.
On the plus side, I havn't been to Spellhold, Underdark, Suldanessalar, and ToB for over 10 years. I will probably have forgotten most of everything right now. Yay!

It depends on how old you're talking about.... I usually try different older games, and rotate my selection randomly, if we're talking about generations ago....

I don't play old games. I find that most old games are... well... old. Games I LOVED are, when revisited, much MUCH worse than I remember due to time marching on and higher demands on entertainment and gameplay and interface. I would love to say I still play Fallout 1 / 2 or Arcanum, but no, I have started them and the clunky interface and sloooow pace is just driving me crazy with frustration now.

The oldest game I have installed on my computer is the re-release of Monkey Island. I barely play it though, but it's good when I do, it feels like watching a truly classic sitcom, like I Love Lucy. You know all the jokes like an instinct, but you laugh anyway.

Other than that Sims 3 is the oldest game I am playing, and after that DA:O.

Phantasy Star IV is probably my all time favorite RPG, if you go by the number of times I've played start to finish. First on the Genesis, then on the Sega Saturn via the Japanese PS I-IV collection, then emulators on my PC, and now finally as part of the Sega Genesis Collection for PSP.

While in many ways inferior to every other Phantasy Star ever made, Phantasy Star III has a story that I like, and four endings mandates playing through four times. Each ending is different enough that it's worth playing them all, even though the original game gives you exactly two save slots. :smallannoyed:

Need for Speed Underground 2 is my favorite racing game. I liked that you needed to unlock parts to make your car better, and you had to seek out different shops in the city to get certain part upgrades. I didn't care for the hard limit on the amount of cash you can get, or the fact that a 10-star car required certain modifications that frankly I still think are ugly. Originally started on the PS2, then got a copy for my PC, but now I have to rely on the PS2 because apparently NFSU2 won't play nice with Win7.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri + Alien Crossfire expansion. I got them when they first went on sale, and I've had them installed on every single computer I've ever owned. It's more of a constant than any single other program for me. SMAC is a very appropriate name for this game. (Sounds like 'smack' which is slang for heroin, which is probably the most addictive narcotic on the planet.)

Neverwinter Nights 1 Diamond Edition gets an honorable mention, because I reinstall it at least once a year, though when storage space is needed it gets the boot first.

SimCity 4 + Rush Hour is almost as bad as SMAC, but only because of the insane number of plug-ins I have for it. It's eye candy, and like porn for civil engineering and architects and wannabes. Also, terraforming.

Neverwinter Nights 2 gets an honorable mention because not only is it not that old, but I've never actually finished a game despite a lot of strong attempts. Like NWN1, it gets uninstalled if/when I need more space on the hard drive.

Let's see...
-I recently picked up the original Sniper Elite on Steam and quite liked it. Possibly the most phoned-in voice acting I've ever heard, but interesting gameplay.
-C&C Generals. Not all that old, and I know most people don't care for it...but I like it as kind of a guilty pleasure. Building unlimited superweapons is fun.
-Majesty. Great, unique concept for a RTS, and it's got wonderful variety in its random battles.
-Railroad Tycoon II. I like simulation and business games, and this one's pretty good. I saw OpenTTD was mentioned upthread; that's on my list of things to try out.
-Rollercoaster Tycoon, the original, the first, the best. (Though I'll pop in 2 when I want to just fiddle with coasters)
-UFO: Alien Invasion is a new game (still in beta, actually), but I'll mention it here since it's basically just a remake of XCOM.

me?

i often find myself going back to Megaman X on the SNES. same with some of the old Squaresoft games of that era... they made a lot of surprisingly good quality RPGs during that time: Final Fantasy 4-6, Chrono Trigger, the Seiken densetsu/Legend of Mana series, Secret of Evermore, Bahamut Lagoon, Mario RPG, Front Mission...

still play Street Fighter 2, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and it's more modern counterparts. i really wish i had MvC2 though... so much love for that game T_T

i also keep going back to the Breath of Fire (both SNES and it's PS1 installments) & Suikoden Series (PS1).

i tried going back to the PS1 FFs, but 7 gives me a very bad twitch in my eye due to how dated the graphics look. a buddy of mine still has my copy of FF8, so i can't really say how dated it looks but 9 is passable.

the oldest game i would probably keep going back to is probably the best beat-em-up of the NES era: River City Randsom.

The only old games that I liked that I don't still play a lot are the ones I played so much back in the day that I could still probably complete them on their hardest mode in my sleep (all the Commander Keen games, Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II, the Hocus Pocus and Crystal Caves games). Even so, sometimes I want to, but I can't find the disks and haven't found another way to get them.

Unreal Tournament 2004 is still my favourite FPS. Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II are still my favourite RPGs, and they're still followed by Icewind Dale, Morrowind, Icewind Dale II, and Planescape: Torment. I still play Neverwinter Nights, more than I play Neverwinter Nights 2 (which is still pretty new, so I guess it doesn't count anyhow). I still play Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II. I still play Lemmings and Lemmings 2: The Tribes. I still play Populous: The Beginning every now and again.

I never played Arcanum, any of the Fallout games or Lionheart until the last couple of years, and I still find I prefer that style for RPGs playing them for the first time - so definitely not just nostalgia there.

Anything else? Let's see... Half-Life. A few other Lemmings games (Lemmings 3d, Lemmings Revolution, Lomax). Oh, also, Zork games (Zero, One, Two, Three, Grand Inquisitor).

... It would actually be easier for me to name the new games I do play rather than the old ones I still play, apparently. I'm sure I'm still missing a few, although those are all the ones I've played lately with any frequency.

I don't replay games that I've beaten or binged thru, generally. Only 2 currently stand out as exceptions:

Heroes of Might & Magic V (2006)
Yes, the 2nd most hated HoMM is my favorite HoMM. Others hate the art direction; I love the art direction. Others hate the random hero leveling; I love the random hero leveling. Others hate the constraining of heroes to their faction army roster; I love the constraining.
My experience with HoMM is II and V, loved both. Looked at III and IV and found their art style appalling, and the sci-fi/fantasy mix storyline turns me off. Been following up on VI, and became underwhelmed. Decided not to buy it until maybe it has 2 expansions under its belt.
Still have HoMM V installed with all its mods, and play when I get that craving.

Dawn Of War 2 (2009)
The online MP keeps this game alive for me. I've had this game since vanilla, and on and off I go back to the MP depending on how FUBAR I feel Relic made the MP balance. Currently I play it every night.

I hear what you're saying. For me, it's hard getting into a spate of Ultima again (booted up Ultima 4 last night, for example) and dealing with the fact that "I" doesn't open inventory, that "Z" is used to bring up stats, and there's no way to exit out of damn thing without killing the task from task manager. But, as soon as I hear Stones being played, I forget I'm a grown man in the 21st century and I'm in the mood to become the Avatar once again.

Depends on what counts as old. Well, a quick list:
- Master of Orion II
- Chrono Trigger (played through it tens of times)
- Baldur's Gate Trilogy
- MTG: Shandalar
- Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War (Soulstorm)
- Transport Tycoon Deluxe (well, OpenTTD)
- Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (doing runs)
- Megaman 2 (see above)
- DefCon
- Super Street Fighter II Turbo (Arcade)
- Civilization 4 (guess this counts as old now?)

Occasionally re-reading parts of Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime too.

EDIT: Oh, and some Combat Mission II, Medieval: Total War, Jagged Alliance 2 & Hearts of Iron 2.

Here's some of my favorites...

-Mother/Earthbound Zero
-Mother 2/Earthbound
-Mother 3?(Not sure if this is old enough being a GBA game and all..)
-Pretty much every old Sonic the hedgehog game
-Neverwinter Nights
-Neverwinter Nights 2?(Not sure if this counts)
-Baulder's Gate(If I could get it working)
-Final Fantasy VII
-Final Fantasy VI
-Soul Caliber 2
-The original Spyro the Dragon games
-The old 2D Zelda games
-Pokemon Red and Yellow
-Pokemon Silver and Crystal

and there is probably more....

I play a lot of SNES games, fairly regularly (which reminds me, I was wanting to beat Illusion of Time again).

also, Kid Icarus. I rebeat that game regularly. It was my very first game, and damn it's still actually pretty hard in places!

Kid icarus, isnt that the game where if you put in all U's in the password screen it unlocks a cheat that sends you to the final battle or something? Something like, capitol U then all little u's, repeat for each line the password goes on? I dunno, I havent played an icarus game in like 20 years, im disturbed I even remember that if its wrong, horribly disturbed if im right.

Use to do quite a bit of Masters of Orion 2, but it doesn't seem to run on my current computer, plus there are some other decent 4x games. Like Endless Space or Galactic. Civilizations.

Age of empires 2, Dawn of War, and Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends are still faavorites of mine, though DoW is difficult since I lost some of the CD keys. The first was my introduction to the RTS which is still among my favorite genres.

Nexus: Jupiter Incident is good, though I only just discovered it. Very nice space combat Sim, with essentially turn based combat even thought is in real time

At the time of their release, Kid Icarus and Metroid were kind of marketed as "sister" games in that they're released at the same time and are both Nintendo-made games. And they pioneered the annoying 50-letter password system, which taught a little kid the importance of recording passwords exactly and then storing it where it won't be lost/forgotten.

Very important skill useful in later life. :smallwink:

Anyways, I mention them because the reason I remember them as sister games is because both of them have (1)passwords, (2)similar cover design, and (3)stupid simplistic bosses and too few of them.

I play FF9 once a year.
I'm currently playing Ocarina of Time (as in, the game is on right now).
I play a mod of FFT every few months, if that counts.
I play through blue or silver once every other year or so.
I play through, and 100% complete Banjo Kazooie every other year or so.
I play FF7 once every once in a while.

Let me put in this way. My 2 newest systems that I own are the PS2 and the PSP. The PSP is hacked, and all I play on it are GBA and PSX games. I used to own an Xbox 360, and other than games that were only fun with other people in the room, I only enjoyed Blue Dragon and Tales of Vesperia.

I'm a retro gamer, because I couldn't care less about fine detail graphics and I've found that games I actually enjoy are easier to find from the PSX era.

Get a second gold mine and 8 crypt beasts, and then keep building towers. That one is really not that hard. Second Gold mine is usally a good solution for everything on hard. For the last night elf level, you probably should even get three.

This can even be further generalized into "always expand when possible and spam good kiting units". In the Orc-mission against 5 humans I just took the free mine and then some of the human mines and suddenly the odds were greatly evened up.

Yeah, I had figured that my failures were connected by not being able to get that second mine. Incidentally, I don't like high paces in RTSs, so the root of the problem might be there as well.

I'm playing Civ4 (Rhys & Fall of Civilization: Civilizations in Abundance modmod) at the moment.

Neverwitner Nights is one of those odd games that I don't think is actually very good, but frequently end up reinstalling and playing - more that games like e.g. Dragon Age that better meet my idea of a well designed game.
One of the (theoretical) flaws (IMO) with NWN is that there are so many ways to customize your character that many of the decisions become meaningless. Even more so when the various comunity expansion packs are added. In contrast, in something like DA, each feat or ability you choose makes a distinct difference to the character build and game-play. But then its this absurd customisation that makes me keep coming back to it. The number of times I've felt compelled to create a bizare, non-optimized character (e.g. a Half-orc mage/paladin dual-wielding kamas)...

I haven't played it for a few months, but is Medieval Total War 2 old enough to be considered an "old game"? I have all the more recent TW games apart from Shogun 2, but MTW2 is the one I play the most. (Followed by the original Shogun).

I've also been playing Unreal Tournament 2003 a fair bit recently. (And that because I had been working at sea recently where the main entertainment during breaks was playing the original UT).

I'll echo everybody who said Master of Orion 2. Even though I had to figure out DOSBox to get it working on these newfangled machines.

Civ III gets honorable mention, because while I don't play it that often, once every couple years I will go crazy and try to design a really awesome world with a custom tech tree and everything. It normally doesn't go well, but its fun.

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI (3 US) [Hardtype Patch, first ever FF6 playthrough]

Playing KoTOR again... I had it when it was new.

Let me seeeeee

Warzone 2100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warzone_2100). Complete freedom to build your own vehicles, research, good story, everything every other RTS I've played since has lacked one of. Massed antitank missile lines for the win, although it never paid to rely on that as everything was so well balanced and without other weapons you died easily to infantry rushes.

Earth 2150 Lost Souls. You want a haaaarrrrrddddd RTS, this is the one for you. Again, complete customisability of units, good story, but I could never get into it due to not being able to work out what I needed to do to progress at time. That said, it's a really good game and even skirmishes take a while and are fun.

Total Annihilation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Total_Annihilation). What a game. Oh boy, this is the one that started it all, the one that defined RTS, for me at least. Big battles, lots of units and, again, completely balanced. No uber units that the other faction couldn't match. A great game with a whole load of user content. Of course, this was made at a time before half of you lot were born ( I see you lurking Cassie) and the internet was not what it is today, a frightening realm of trolls, pirates and people who will rip you off but rather a place where the users still held to its creators paradigm, in other words cooperation and "Lets make something really cool that isn't a damn virus" so the games code was available for people to play with as they saw fit. This mean that while the devs put in maybe 100 units, 50 maps and a couple of sets of missions for each side, you can multiply that by 20 at least for user content. You need only look at the Wikipedia article to know, by the number of awards it's won, that this one's gold.

I'm an old school gamer. So, this list gets long. I narrowed it down to the essentials. Look into these classics:

NES:
Chrystalis
Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros.
Kung Fu
Solar Jetman
Dodge Ball

Dreamcast:
Phantasy Star Online V2.
Evolution 2: Far Off Promise
Grandia 2
Jet Grind Radio
Silver
Speed Devils
NFL 2K
Space Channel 5
Skies of Arcadia
Seaman
Sega: Marine Fishing

PS/2:
Big Mutha Truckers 2
Burnout 3
Final Fantasy X
Future Tactics
Indigo Prophecy
Primal
Suikoden III
The Warriors
Xenosaga I-III (marathon)

XBox:
Need For Speed Underground: 2
Jet Set Radio Future
Fable

Back when my Atari 2600 still worked:
Pac-man
Break Out
Asteroids

Of all of them, I probably revisit the Dreamcast and PS/2 the most. My NES is finally starting to give out, so it's too frustrating to be on world 8-4 in Super Mario Bros when suddenly random numbers pop up and Mario glitches into invisible mode. I'm watching the wife play Dark Cloud 2 for PS/2 now. It's a visually stunning game even now.

Alas, My Sega Saturn is long since gone, and I can't get the Satourne emulator to function properly, and everyone says "RTFM", but there's no manual :smallannoyed:. I'm jealous of your Saturn games.

Saturn systems are really easy to find here in Texas. I found one shop selling them for $30 with all the controllers and a free game of my choice.

You know what old school PC game I really miss?

The King's Quest series. How awesome was that game?

Actually, there are five games I had on PC that I couldn't stop playing for the longest time:
King's Quest IV
Dragon's Lair
Mad Dog McCree
Interactive (Prince's game... don't know why, but I couldn't stop playing it.)

and I can't believe I almost forgot. Menzoberranzan. You know, I played that sucker so much, and for so long, I still have an emulator for it. I don't play it anymore, but man... I loved that freaking game. How did I let that one slip my memory?

Same here. Sometimes I randomly dust my PS2 and go through MGS2 Boss Survival. The action is surprisingly fun and varied.

I play some other old games too (SNES, random nostalgic PC games, etc.) but the oldest game I play is Minesweeper. Man, that game is brilliant!

It's not really designed for those things, to be fair--it emulates an early 90s DOS machine because that's what people need to get *really* old games working. A lot of Win9x games (provided they were properly written in the first place) will still run on a modern version of Windows, so there's less of a need for emulation there.

(VirtualBox may be more what you're looking for--it gives you an entire virtual machine to play with and there's 3D acceleration support (albeit experimental); I've got no idea if Win9x will install and run happily on it, mind you).

* towards the end of that serie, Ryu and Ken ask Bison(the evil guy) what is his plan:
Bison reveals that his plan is... to preserve the Amazonic forest and save "the green lung of the planet" from the ruthless companies that would burn it down.
he actually says: "Join me, i want to create a better world for our children".

Lots of pikes for the front line with 2-3x the bows behind them. Then throw some swords or knights on your flanks and you have an unstoppable army. You'll crush your foes with only minor casualties.

An odd choice for gaming, that...I actually ran Windows 2000 on my main machine when it came out, and there were quite a few games that simply wouldn't work properly because they were expecting to be on Win9x. The most annoying example was X-Wing: Alliance, which saw you were running on an OS with an NT kernel and immediately assumed you didn't have hardware-accelerated Direct3D, so you had to run it in software mode. (You know, rather than using the actual Direct3D functions that would *tell* you what the capabilities of the machine were, like strange people who wrote code properly did... :smallfurious:).

I'll restrict myself to ten years and older and games that are currently installed on my hard drive while seeing more or less regular play in the current year.

Age of Empires II - Conquerors sometimes gets play in LAN multiplayer, and sometimes I bust it out for several hours of botstomping.
Civilization II is always installed. No game with Civilization in the name has managed to beat it yet.
Theme Hospital I've played through recently using the Open Source engine, which lets it run on 64-bit Win 7.
Diablo - about once a year I just beat the game with a rogue. It's still just as fun as it was twelve years ago.
Grandia II - I still get the urge to replay it. It had a great battle system and awesome battle music.
Heroes of Might and Magic III; judging by the other posts I don't need to explain this one.
Master of Magic is an iffy case; I only really discovered it about a year ago. It's a blast though.
The Game of Robot I-IV are still perhaps the best German games you've never heard about. They came out 1989-92 and would have to be described as action-adventures. Think top-down Legend of Zelda with much larger maps, a lot more items and much more emphasis on puzzles. I only finished the last of these in 2007, and every couple of months I'll just replay one. If they'd ever come out in English, perhaps they'd seen some success - but since I grew up playing these, that's nostalgia talking, too. (For instance, if you ask me, Robot III in particular is one of the best adventure games period.)
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri Civilization II is the best Civ game that actually has Civilization in the name - but SMACX is the best Civ game, period. It lacks the "pretend history" appeal, but the science fiction it's been replaced with is just as great, and it has so much more strategic variety it's hardly a comparison.
The Settlers II Last Settlers game with the pathways system - it's still awesome. Even though I own the remake, I still find myself playing this over it because it looks nicer somehow and runs faster. I can't really explain it.
Warcraft III barely qualifies as old enough. It runs faster and more hassle-free than Starcraft II, at any rate, and still gets plenty of play.

Man, I love this game (and Tower of Doom). Sank tons of arcade cash into it, never got sick of it.

I'm a retro gamer at heart, so we'll go through the collection and pick the one I play the most:

Intellivision - Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (hooked me at a very young age)
Atari - Combat
NES - Zelda. SMB3 and Journey to Silius as runner-ups
Sega Master System - Rastan
Genesis - Golden Axe. Runner up Shining In The Darkness
SNES - FF3(6). Runner-up Zelda, Magic Sword
Saturn - X-men vs. Street Fighter
PSX - Arc the Lad 2. Runner-up FF9
N64 - Ocarina. Runner-up Mario64, Majora's Mask (I need to play more Conker)
Dreamcast - Grandia 2. Runner-up SF3, Last Blade
PS2 - Drakan. Runner up, Fatal Frame, Grandia 3
Gamecube - Wind Waker. Runner up, Mario Sunshine, Mario Kart
Wii - Twilight Princess. Runner up, No More Heroes, Samurai Shodown collection
PC - Drakan, Aethra Chronicles (shareware RPG, well worth looking into)

I have some other systems too, but none that I drag out often enough to count.

I may play too many games.

Are they the "3D" versions on DS? Cause I discovered those a little while ago and it's strangely refreshing to play.

Also, rekindled my fond memories of Final Fantasy 6 after my daughter got me playing the Pony-fied version last weekend.

No, I found the GBA port.

You guys have no idea how happy it makes me to see X-Com and System Shock 2 mentioned so many times

For me, I've always played a lot of "old" games because, quite frankly, I've never been able to afford very many new games. One or two a year at most - and that includes birthdays and x-mas. But some of the ones that really stand out:

X-Com: UFO Defense
X-Com: Apocalypse
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (and SMAX)
Star Wars Rebellion
Half-Life
TES III: Morrowind
Halo: Combat Evolved

*System Shock 2 would be on the list, but I lost my copy a few years ago :smallfrown:

i woulld hardly say twilight princess is really old enough to be considered an old game.

Oh, absolutely agreed...I just got carried away. Hell, I have a hard time considering PS2-era games old.

If it helps my retro-gamer street-cred, I'm playing Gauntlet 2 right now!

While it's not exactly old, I always have a copy of HoMM V with me. It's fun, has hours of gameplay, and runs on nearly any machine without looking too ugly. It's really not very complicated as games go.

I also like to revisit Half Life (original) and anything that is associated with it, mods and the like. It was one of my first games, and it's just so ingrained in my mind that seeing the sun-scorched walls of a western town in "Wanted" or the rocks of Black Mesa conjure an unspecified sense of nostalgia.

Warcraft III barely qualifies as old enough. It runs faster and more hassle-free than Starcraft II, at any rate, and still gets plenty of play.
It's 10 years. My cousins weren't born yet back then and I was still in school. That's old.

No, I found the GBA port.

I dislike the GBA FF6. It screws up my favourite scene from the game: the point where you get the Falcon.

How does it change it?

How does it change it?

"And now it might just save us. The Falcon." changes to "Falcon, I need your help! I can't be the worlds fastest pilot if I can't fly!". If you're familiar with the game you know that at that moment you've been in a destroyed, ruined world with music to match for hours, and the game's about to launch into an uplifting hopeful airship theme. The new line totally kills the moment.

...yeah, I remember that line alright... Well. That's an amazingly stupid ****-up; guess it's a part of the retranslation.

Well, I guess I can look up the original on youtube when I get there.

I very like GTA2, maybe you still can download it for free from the rockstar games website.

I also love game boy, the first one, in black and white (or should I say black and green..). My favourite games are Wario Land 1 (the sequels aren't as good), Super Mario Land 1 and 2, The Legend of Zeld: Link's Awakening, Kirby's Dreamland, Metroid 2: Return of Samus and others.

I find myself often going back to the PC game: Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. Sometimes I just need to do some mindless, senseless, mass killings to clear my head. Frozen Orb is great for that. heh

SNES
Lambourgini Racing
Super Mario Kart
Super Mario World

I keep forgetting if River City Ransom is NES or SNES.

N64
Mario Kart 64
Rogue Squadron
Star Wars that Podracing game

GameCube
Animal Crossing
Tales of Symphonia
Skies of Arcade: Legends
Sonic Adventure

GameBoy/Colour/Advance
Pokemon Red Blue Yellow
MegaMan Battle Network series

I also have Final Fantasy IV on the PlayStation, GBA, and the NintendoDS. I keep going back to that game.

Final Fantasy V (PlayStation) is a personal fave as it's the very first Final Fantasy game I had actually saw the end credits for.

Other old PC games:

Wolfenstein3D (even tho I can't find a version anymore that plays the music)
Doom, Doom2, Final Doom
Blakestone

Think that's about it for now. Those are all games I have a habit of going back to playing again over the years. Diablo II: LoD would be the main one.

*Sees Rouge Squadron on list above, downs in nostalgia*

I got that game about 10 years ago, and beat every level except for one (Raid on Fest) that I used a cheat code to get past so I could continue the story. Came back to it last summer and picked up at least silver medals for every mission.

One game that immediately comes to mind when I think of old games I still play is Rayman Advance. I have a love/hate relationship with that game, and I have still not been able to beat it yet.

MediEvil 1 and 2 are still my favorite games from the Playstation 1, and I play them whenever I get the chance.

The pokemon game are also still great. The original Super Smash Brothers as well.

For the NES:
MegaMan 2 & 3, Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros 3. I must know every secret item by now, but I still love them. I play these at least one week per year, each.
For the SNES: LoZ: Link to the past, MegaMan X. They kept the good stuff and improved the mediocre stuff. These get dusted off at least twice a year.
PC games: Rollercoaster Tycoon, for when I want to want to think a bit. Diablo 2 for when I don't (20 skellies + Amp will kill almost anything). Baldur's Gate 1&2, because, well, it's Baldur's Gate. Age of Empires 2 and Warcraft 3 (plus expansions) because I still haven't completed them. HoMM 2 is the first of the series I played, and I occasionally play hot seat with my better half.

Games I still play a fair bit:

*snip!*
Spaceward Ho! IV
*snip!*

Someone else who has heard of Spaceward Ho!??!
HYAAAH!!

...Shucks.
:smallwink:

I still regularly play Civ 4 (multiplayer with a friend), Supreme Commander, and pull out Baldur's Gate 2 now and again. (BG1:EE in less than a week!) Though I guess those are THAT old, by my estimation.

I am playing through the original X-Com right now, just to hold me over until the remake/reimagining comes out in a month. (And let me tell you, I'm glad I am. It's still fun, but the reminders of its occasional imperfections are making me look forward to the new one even more.) And Deus Ex gets a replay now and again...

I used to play version 2.0 in college with 4 friends in a multiplayer hotseat on a single Mac Classic II that was rented from the front desk of our dorm. (This was in 1993 or so.) Darned thing practically fried itself trying to process the turns, and a game took literally all night to play, if not more.
