The idea is simple. You give the previous poster's avatar a rating based on whatever factors you think of. Generally, it's on a scale of 1-10, but any scale is fine.

Since the white space's avatar doesn't exist, I have to give it an i/10.

@V: Thanks! This current one is Tedd Verres from El Goonish Shive, but in pony form.

2012-08-04, 09:48 PM
Your avatar is all kinds of amazing. I don't really understand what's going on with it, but solid 10/10 nevertheless.

@V: I'm down, anytime.

So cute! 10/10

Will both of the ponies above travel Equestria with me?

Hmm... the lines are a bit thick for my tastes. The face is set a little bit too low. The eyebrow is crooked. It gets cluttered a little by the avatar's right arm, and his left arm looks really long by comparison.

But, you know, solid.

2012-08-05, 03:24 PM
Very nice! Smooth quality, and a fun concept. The only real problem I can see is that the purple glow looks kind of strange. 8/10.

6/10. Because.

Fine. 8/10. I don't like pony style, but you can carry it off.

2012-08-06, 07:15 AM
Your avatar is a classic.
And one of my favourites.

10/10 if you tell me where you hid the Jade Lion.

2012-08-06, 11:54 PM
I've seen a lot of ponytars recently, and this one impresses me a bit. Original flare.

Ashen Lilies
2012-08-07, 11:18 AM
Can't say the same about yours, unfortunately. :/

I'm not a fan of the generic, soulless looking pony-maker ponytars in general (they just lack the same sort of character that custom drawn ones do), but this one in particular looks like you went a little crazy with the costume pieces. :smallconfused:
No avatar needs eight identical legbands. :smallyuk: The black and red skin doesn't help much either - it breaks up the entire avatar and makes it look blurry and broken. Trying to focus on any one part of it is like ripping my eyes out of my skull, sticking them in a centrifuge and then trying to pin the tail on a heavily inbred donkey after taking about 15 shots of tequila. :smalltongue:

1/5, because as terrible as it is, it could be worse.

You amaze me as always, Kris. *highfive*

The left hand (closest to the post) just looks a little wonky.

{table="head"]The Avatar

Hm, I quite like the technique behind the avatar but have a hard time seeing what it is doing. I see a potted cactus in one hand, probably tying in to the desert theme-week but why it is where it is is a mystery to me. The sword is situated either on the tip of her fingers making it a "slightly" awkward grasp or it is hanging at her belt. If it is the latter I'd have turned it in the other direction and/or put it behind her with only the hilt visible, as it is now it seem to go cross with the direction of the character as a whole.

But it is quite pleasing to look at if I don't concentrate too much.

2012-08-07, 05:11 PM
I don't know what to say other than "I like it". 10/10.

2012-08-08, 02:19 PM
A bit cluttered, and the pony is still awfully flat, but the effects are cool.

Dark Elf Bard
2012-08-08, 02:21 PM
Very good. What's its gender?

2012-08-08, 02:24 PM
I don't really know what's going on in your avvie, y'know, with the cactus and such, but it's still cool! 8/10

Nice ponytar. I don't really know what's going on in it. Did the pony fall down and now is all embarrassed? Akrim.elf makes pretty good work.

The proportions look pretty good and I love the eyes. The coloring is pretty excellent. The one place where the avatar falls short is the mane and tail, the hair just looks flat [heh]. It's pretty nice regardless.

Let's give it a... 7/10

Dark Elf Bard
2012-08-08, 06:45 PM
Ooooh, It's Gnomish! When are you gonna respond to my request?

The hat's perspective is very nice, I like the work with shadows. The head is well proportioned for a gnome, and the hair is spectacular.

The arms bother me, like they're elongated ears or something. Maybe lower them a bit?

The jacket is quite nice. The details are a little small and hard to see, but still, amazing!

The shoes are a little wonky, but very good!

All in all, a solid 9/10.

2012-08-08, 09:15 PM
tangental note: you'll want to take note of the three-post rule as a courtesy to others.

However, the avvie:

I like the avvie's attitude, there's an untold story behind that character. Art-wise, nothing particularly stands out, good OR bad. I've seen much better avvies, but I've seen ones a LOT worse (such as my hastily-thrown together crap).

I'll give you an above-average 7/10

2012-08-10, 04:56 PM
not sure i get the story behind it; like red and black, tho the molten effect on a horse is kinda strange idea.

2012-08-10, 05:07 PM
Very elegant! The cut-off is a little sharp, but I think I have to give it at least a 9/10.

Dark Elf Bard
2012-08-10, 05:08 PM
Ponytar! Both meanings!

It needs one of your masterful backgrounds.

Nice art, but I don't get what's going on with your avatar. Who is s/he? What is s/he doing? 6/10

Dark Elf Bard
2012-08-11, 10:26 AM
I think you need to have the skin one color. If it was it would be ten, but the rough skin makes it a 6/10

@V: It's a ponified drow! :smallbiggrin:

2012-08-11, 01:11 PM
the pony part, im slightly biased against, but the black fur with white mane and tail i like. so 8/10
tho i have a horse in my extended signature so i cant say much i supose...:smalltongue:

2012-08-13, 05:08 AM
I like the drawing. It's really beautiful! 9/10

2012-08-13, 05:32 AM
cute little devil avatar all wrapped in a bow. I like it. Quite a lot.

Yeah, the skin is cluttered. 6/10

2012-08-13, 11:45 AM
Superubertotalstandardponymachineproduced. The red eyes look weird with the grey, white and black. 4/10.

2012-08-13, 01:30 PM
simple, not cluttered or over done. night time a bonus. but no persons, and not sure if its supose to be a window or a portal.
so 8/10

2012-08-13, 08:03 PM
It's a face. It's a well-drawn face, sure, but... well, it's just a face. It's just kind of... there, but it isn't doing anything. I honestly don't know what to make of it, so I'll just go with 7/10.

2012-08-13, 08:20 PM
Love the attitude. The demon prince is also a big fan of the flames. The transitions between the flame colors is a little grainy, but the demon prince doesn't care.

9/10 from me.
11/10 from the demon prince.

@V high praise considering the source.

2012-08-13, 08:21 PM
Freaky. Groovy. Weird. 7/10.

2012-08-13, 08:53 PM
It's got quality, but not a lot of interest. 6/10.

Also, if you feel like it, you can rate this one as well. It's intentionally not that good, but I think I failed at botching it properly.

@V: Ah, it's not as good as I thought it would be. That's good. Thanks.

Ooooh! I like the Dark Elf one a lot! Is it supposed to be a take on Venus?

Real Avatar: 9/10 (love it! Although the look in its eyes makes it look crazy, but I like it!)

Dark Elf Venus: 9/10 (it's fun, but I don't know what she's standing on)

@^ Of course! Should I bring a snack?

@V Yay! Fun avvies are the best!

2012-08-14, 10:48 AM
Love the fun little whimsical expression. Nothing overwhelmingly outstanding, but it's a fun little avvie.

2012-08-14, 11:24 AM

2012-08-14, 07:33 PM
Don't really watch MLP more than some clips on youtube. But from what I've seen yours looks pretty spot on with the original cartoon. Though why doesn't the pony have a "Cutie mark"? 8/10.

This is my first attempt at an avatar. Please rate: http://i49.tinypic.com/ofnek3.png

2012-08-14, 07:46 PM
Other than being kinda generic, I don't see any real problems. It doesn't tell any sort of story, it's just sorta... there. I don't know anything about the orc, its personality, or anything.

@V oh, THANK YOU. Quoting yourself and making a wiseass crack to downgrade it .5. Such helpful feedback. Thanks for not just waiting an extra poster to give me a fresh perspective.

@@V My problem is that your opinion HASN'T really changed. You tweaked the number, but you're still of the same opinion, I'm hearing the same feedback. Save the backhanded apologies for someone else.

2012-08-14, 08:08 PM
Freaky. Groovy. Weird. 7/10.

Just noticed that it lacks a mane. Hm. Still 7/10 though.

Okay. I've decided that it maybe merits a 6.5/10. Apart from the coloration, it's generic, I guess. And the lack of mane. Huh.

@^: I'm sorry. My opinion of avatars develops over time. I'm not sure if your desire of opinions necessarily overrides mine. I'm not trying to say that I'm better than you or anything, just I don't know. I looked at it again. I realized it deserves more than 6.5/10, because it's better than many avatars around here. And that isn't a general insult. I quoted myself because my opinion had not changed, but whatever. Again, I'm sorry.
@@^:Really? You know me better than I know myself? I notice things in avatars that I don't notice the first time. For example, the back right leg is too far forward. The ears look weird and too pointy, and the front left leg bends awkwardly at the top. I apologized, and you're not accepting it, and I don't really know what to say now. :smallfrown: I guess you win the argument and I'm a really bad person, don't know myself, and am really stuck up and annoying. Fine.

I was aiming for a sort of break in the forum into space look.

Okay, now that my suspicious of what it was have been confirmed, I can safely enjoy this avatar. :smalltongue: It's a little unorthodox, but it looks nice and clean. Makes me wonder what else is hiding out behind this place... I'll give it 8/10.

I think it's cute, but the anatomy is a little bit derpy 7/10

The Succubus
2012-08-15, 04:20 PM
I really like this one. Everything about it says "sexy naughtiness" but there's a really pleasing innocence to it as well. The style is clearly defined and has a refreshing honesty about it.

@V: I'm thinking about refining it a little over the weekend. There's a few bits I need to tweak.

2012-08-15, 04:57 PM
What always bugs me about this one is that the wings are pointed at the corners. Like a spike. I just noticed the shading on the hair, which is well-done. As far as sexy naughtiness, that one displays it as well. 7/10.

Elder Tsofu
2012-08-16, 04:14 PM
At first I thought it was an very odd but well made painting hanging on a wall, but after seeing your explanation it suddenly felt quite clever too. ^^

8/10 (a weak one since I needed that explanation and felt slightly inferior for not spotting it myself :smalltongue:)

2012-08-16, 06:04 PM
Love the action here complete with action scene. One little tip is that whatever the golden thing behind the glowing sword effect is, it kinda looks like a directional arrow telling which way the sword is moving. I'd recommend trying to rework the bit in the lower right-hand corner to avoid this effect, it distracts from the neat sword-glowing effect.

@V well, you don't like it, but that's 100% of the reaction I'm trying for. Thanks.

2012-08-18, 04:30 PM
Hmm, looks rather weird. A strange evil red riding hood circus pony ... :smallconfused:

second reply to above: maybe one of your avatars looked male, so i assumed. i apologize

2012-08-18, 08:28 PM
You seem to have rather inflexible views of gender. :smalltongue: Still, your avatar is rather fine, and that's what's important in this thread. 9/10.

2012-08-19, 01:49 AM
It's quite good. I wish I could draw that well, to be honest. The crossover is readily recognizable, the positioning is solid, nothing strikes me as at all wrong here. I give it a 10/10.

If you could rate my freshly uploaded ponytar below instead of my normal OotSatar, I'd be grateful.

Large (800x800) scale original, for better viewing. http://i376.photobucket.com/albums/oo203/viorlashasui/ponytar1large.png

2012-08-19, 01:52 AM
Nice expressive charm about it. I like the touch with the pencil. This one seems to be telling a story with just a single picture.

However even the larger version looks... soft? around the edges, giving the illusion of being out of focus. Still, one of the better ponytars I've ever seen.

Ashen Lilies
2012-08-19, 10:06 PM
@ Telasi: PurityIceKiller probably wishes he could draw that well too. :smalltongue:
His avatar (minus the special effects) is generated from pre-fab content using this pony creator here (http://generalzoi.deviantart.com/art/Pony-Creator-Full-Version-254295904). Given you drew your own pony, you're probably better than he is.

This avatar again... Maybe it's because I've seen it around so often, but it's not as jarring to me anymore. My opinion of it has improved! Slightly.

2012-08-19, 11:00 PM
Classic, amazing, and you are one of my favorite avatarists. But. This avatar is a 9.76345599230443/10.

Also, sword does not look like a sword, Mr. Hockey Elf.

I'm usually quite fond of your avvies, and this one is no exception. The flowers and instrument both complement the simplicity of the rest of the design. Compliments to Ceika for a job well done. 10/10

I enjoy character avatars in general. I'm not totally sure what this angel's story is, but it looks like he has one. Something about that spike off to the side of that sword is distracting.

@V Mr Seuss will take your critique in stride, I'm sure.

It appears to be a snapshot stolen from some Dr. Suess book.

Eh, it's not bad. Colors are a bit strong, lines are good but a tad messy, idea is clear. I'll give you a 5/10, points off for not having it in OotS-style really. I think it's funny, anyway.

2012-08-24, 06:55 AM
The line on the hat are strangely squared compared to the rest. The hat look like it barely stands on the head.
The head feels a bit too big for the body but i guess OOts proportion gnome make it kind of mandatory.

The clothes are nice and very detailes. shadowing is light, perhaps a bit too light in some places; (a shadow on the back of the left leg would be a good idea too)

Right boot make a weird angle witht the ground.

2012-08-24, 08:33 AM
Hm. The bone structure on this one looks rather crazy, His expression is a bit too strange for me, and the fingernails and mouth are pure white. The shirt should have a bit more outline, too. 4/10.

2012-09-02, 12:52 AM
Hmm, an angel. I've always loved angels.. So.. Angelic! But to the point, it's a well done avatar, even if it isn't that complicated. 8/10!

EDIT: It's a ponytar of Lux, a champion in League of Legends. She's meant to be happy and sparkly with cheer. :)

2012-09-02, 01:16 AM
I'm not generally a fan of the ponies, unless I'm at the track; but your avatar is cute. I love the bundled-up look, like it's ready to head out into the elements to - I was about to say face the dangers of the world, or some such; but that smile is just too... pleasant(?) - take some cookies to grandmother's house, maybe? Is this Little Pony Bluehood?

All in all I'm enjoying it. 8/10 because I'm biased against ponies and I don't give a 10/10 for anything that doesn't amaze me.

2012-09-02, 02:29 AM
[Artist's comment]
It was supposed to be Spellthief Lux from League of Legends, but I couldn't manage the colour scheme, so I went with something that looked nice.
I think it suits Lux if she were a pony, but I'm not an expert on ponifying characters.
Anyway... I'm new to this, so thank you for your kind words.
(And it does look like Little Red Riding hood with blonde hair and wearing blue! I feel so ashamed!)[/Artist's comment]

Yours on the other hand, is very good. I have no idea what it's from, or is, or whether it's an original artwork, or a reused image, but it's interesting.

2012-09-06, 11:05 PM
Not bad. The eyes kind of bug me, though. I'll give it a 9/10.

2012-09-06, 11:07 PM
Ooh, I really like this one. It's cute.

A simple, kinda touching akrimponytar. I like it. 8/10.

2012-09-10, 08:51 PM
Cute, but poorly done- it's just their tops, the guy on the right's mouth looks funny, and Tarquin looks like a fatso. Points for the pun, though. 6/10

2012-09-10, 09:30 PM
Nifty action scene, nice shading. I think If I could see more than the back of the character, I'd have rated it higher. 9/10

@V I'll take that 6/10. I'm talking with a digital artist I know IRL about drawing me a more legit version than something scanned from Dr Seuss's book, but it's currently WIP.

2012-09-13, 07:06 PM
It looks like a Dr. Seuss book illustration. In fact, I think it is one. I really don't know what else to say; it's just kinda odd. If I'm right and it's a scan, then 6/10 for at least picking an unusual subject. If you drew it, then 10/10 for fooling me.

2012-09-13, 10:31 PM
Ooohhh, nice. I haven't noticed you having done huge amounts of OOTS avataring before. The lines are thin, but the avatar itself is great. I.... did not start out that well. 8/10. Yeah, mainly the lines are too thin. Apart from that, wow.
@V:Uh.. man. I need to fix this thing. Thanks for the idea.

A platypus on a flying bicycle. The idea is fantastic, the execution is not artistically impressive but it conveys the idea behind, a platypus soaring through the sky, quite well.

2012-09-20, 11:32 PM
I love the colors, and I think it's a good style overall, but... it's just so busy that it's hard to take it all in. Also, your lines seem... grainy? Something is off with them, especially in the skirt.

Overall, a beautiful idea and good style, but the execution needs to be cleaned up a little.

A grey and black pony doesn't sound that exciting, but the pose and expression make her look mournful. The horn looks a touch odd to me, maybe a little too flat? The tail looks a bit on the small side, too. Other than that, not bad. 8/10

#1. Good idea. However that was not what the avatar was.... Oh well.
#2. Also.... the only time Pinky posts in this thread after me... it's when I have the second worst avatar I've ever made. Ah well.

Now your avatar, I like it. One thing is, though, why is the horn round? It looks sort of weird. Also, the tail coming over the flank looks odd. Overall though, pretty good. 7/10.

You're a pair of pants that ninja'd me. Very nice! But would be better if it had something sparkly on them, and if they were short shorts. 9.999/10

I am really fond of this one. It's fun. And adorable!

@V Of course you're original. You used completely different punctuation.
Seriously... People put too much stock in word choice and ignore all the squiggly lines around them...

It's kinda small and has thin lines, but akrim made it and i like it, so 8/10.

I like the fact that the avatar is in a semi dynamic pose, which I know are helluva hard to pull off, and you didn't do too bad. Love the "naughty grin" sort of look you have going there, aced that one. While I do like the spiral on the staff, it seems to be coming out of the side, instead of the top, which makes it look slightly budget. The avatar isn't shaded, but shading is not easy to do, and sometimes makes things worse. Hell, I can't shade, so I wont be adding that to the rating actually.. Just thought I'd say.
The body and cloaks clip seem to be facing the user head on, whereas the body and cape are at an angle as if the avvy were running towards the text.
Love the hair flowing back thing, though it could use some work, I don't understand why it seems to be flowing down and sideways simultaneously.
I understood that the green triangles were a spell casting aura after looking at them myself the first time (before I read your post) but it took me a while to figure out it wasn't a plant, and honestly it doesn't look very nice.

Overall good avatar with okay posing. Could use work, but is better than quite a few other avatars I've seen. 5/10

2012-10-11, 01:54 PM
Nice avatar, it's pretty much what I imagined and I really like the magic effect. The only real criticisms I have are that the wings seem kind of plain to me and that the feet could be a bit more angled to better show that he's floating in the air, but otherwise I like it. 8/10

2012-10-11, 02:20 PM
The main body seems solid enough. The problem is that the wings attach in a somewhat strange way, and both they and the magic are inconsistent with the existing style. I'll give it a 7/10.

2012-10-11, 02:45 PM
10, female drows rule of course!

2012-10-11, 02:56 PM
I like that new one. Not that much different from the previous ones, but it makes sense. 8/10.

2012-10-11, 02:57 PM
I've always liked drow, whether they be called "Dark Elves" or drow. So that's a bonus. I don't like how the neck andchin blend together, but I love the eyes, eyebrows and hair. Honestly, the only other problem I can find (for me) is that it's not full body, and therefor, no dynamic posing.

I hereby give you 8/10

Ninja'd, so edited with same as before. A little bumped up though, because I realized that I kind like the cape.

I like how the ninja got ninja'd.

The avvie itself is quirky.

It's a... picture. Of pants. Floating there. Doing... nothing.

Yeah, nothing really inspiring, sorry. 4/10

It won the contest. What am I supposed to say? 9.3/10.

2012-10-11, 05:52 PM
You know, decimal points in ratings aren't really necessary. You can just change the rating scale so it's out of, say, 20 or 100.

Anyway! Not really the best I've ever seen. I took me a bit of time to figure out what it was, and it's not really... appealing to me somehow. Still, it could be much worse. 6/10.

2012-10-11, 06:01 PM
Doing it out of ten is traditional.

Eh. Ponytar. Flat. Slightly more interesting with the ice wings. 5.5/10.

2012-10-11, 06:03 PM
I like the colors and theme, but the lines are kinda grainy.

Seventeen kinds of awesome. At least.

@V It's the base image I'm going to base future avatars off.
In other words, the standard Elemental Pony.

2012-10-15, 08:19 AM
I thought the paint-splattered ponytar was more interesting, but this one isn't bad.

2012-10-15, 08:27 AM
Why do the pants twist like that? Does it mean they're sentient? Does that mean they're evil?

2012-10-21, 09:05 PM
Generally strong. A full 9/10, even if I'm not excited by robots.

By the way, here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filly) are (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PortmanteauCoupleName) relevant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filial_piety) links (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/VisualPun).

...yeah, that's about all I have to say. 5/10

@^: Yes, I saw them. You were going for 'filial piety.' But you got Rarity Pie. Sorry, but the action pose makes it difficult to make out the filial proportions. (And, by the way, chill out.)

2012-10-22, 04:44 PM

but it's still awesome so 8/10

Hooray for pants! Their Seuss-iness always makes me feel all warm and nostalgic. Keeping an eye on that "Pants" game has made me realize that pants is a funny-sounding word when you say it a lot. Pants pants pants. I'll give it 8/10.

2012-11-04, 10:35 AM
I really, really like this one. Kasanip is a great artist, and that is amazing.
I say 10/10.

2012-11-05, 03:41 AM
You must have changed your avatar, Cuthalion. Previous posters have been calling you a robot, but I'm seeing a man in a cape playing a...(Keytar? Washboard? Come on, Komodo, you're disgracing your musical history here! Wait, oh, crap, am I still typing this?!) Ahem.
I like the design, simplistic OOTS style, and consistent Autumn-y color scheme. However, I personally feel that an avatar's duty is to stand tall and boldly represent something about the poster behind it. Yours seems a little too static, and nothing about it really catches the eye or strikes me as original. In conclusion, nicely designed and functional, if not much more. 7/10

2012-11-05, 09:30 AM
There's something about the lines that kind of bugs me, but otherwise, I like it. It made me laugh. 9/10.

@V: Okay, this one's getting retired. I should have known no one would care. :smallsigh:

@@V: That's what I meant. Even if you get the pun, it wasn't worth it.

2012-11-05, 09:38 AM
This is going to sound harsh...
Pun or no pun, I can only judge this avatar on its merits as an image.
And as an image, it's not very good.
The tail is too long, the legs are bent funny and the mane is too static for the motion the character is supposed to be performing.

Not your best work.

@^ I get it. It's just not very good.
Filial Piety: A filly version of a fusion of Rarity and Pinkie Pie and also a reference to a religious practice in which one's ancestors are worshipped.
My main issue is that the legs look off. But that's a side effect of the pony creator's posing function used on smaller ponies.

Larger version of avatar so you can properly tell me it's horrible and that I should feel bad:

@V It's avoided on male ponies because it often ends up looking funny.
Hence, they're shown either head on or from the side, rarely from an angle.

But I thought I'd give it a try for once.

2012-11-05, 09:44 AM
I like this, especially once I noticed the candle, but you can see the eye on the other side of his head. That just seems really weird, as You don't see that on other ponies. But overall, a nice 8.5/10.

2012-11-05, 07:12 PM
Not very much is being portrayed from this image other than orange and a key-tar...

2012-11-05, 07:16 PM

Looks slightly off, like someone tried to make a stick figure but added realistic elements to it.

2012-11-05, 07:32 PM
A zombie alicorn thing is not your everyday run-of-the-mill pony. It's also not made with those cookie-cutter pony creators, which is a plus.

A Rainy Knight
2012-11-05, 07:50 PM
That's a pretty good-looking sword... it's got that shiny reflection, an edge to the blade, a detailed grip, an interesting shape, all the works. My only complaint is that the area where the hilt connects to the blade looks a little dull compared to the rest of it since the details are smaller and the distinct colors are harder to make out. I say 8.5/10.

2012-11-05, 08:48 PM
I really, really like this one. Kasanip is a great artist, and that is amazing.
I say 10/10.

Geez, my appreciation of this avatar is even higher now that I look at it more. 10.5/10

2012-11-05, 10:34 PM
not bad, but the washboard? is the only thing that really evokes any sort of story, and not much at that. I prefer avvies that look like they're a tale waiting to be told, not some street performer asking for a nickel.

2012-11-06, 12:28 AM
The Pants With Nobody Inside Them!
I'm a fan, though it's not entirely original 7.5/10

2012-11-06, 09:35 AM
Very colorful but the way he is holding the weapon kind of drags down the avatar quality. 8/10

2012-11-06, 09:37 AM
Very OOTS-like, but has an artistic element to it that definitely sets it apart from the others.

@V It's Pain from Naruto

2012-11-06, 09:57 AM
Hmm. I...ah...

I confess. Your avatar intrigues me, but I'm having difficulty understanding it.

I can see it is a unicorn pony wearing some strange type of robe-like outfit that has a nice design but looks like it must be uncomfortably tight to walk in. The bridge of his nose, ear, and soul-patch-area are lined with black specks that are too small to really make out but that I assume are piercings. The eye contains a pattern that, to me, seems like some strange mix between "hypnotized" and "severely sleep deprived." The whole thing is topped off by orange Naruto hair and matching headband. I'm not even sure what to make of that. And I find it a little disquieting that the pony appears to lack a tail.

I don't know what to make of this. However, it's clear that the avatar was carefully designed, with attention paid to detail. And I've said that the job of an avatar is to stand tall and catch the eye, and yours certainly does that.

I've put too much thought into this. Maybe your sig is right, and it really is a work of art. I can't say I get it, but I also can't say I don't like it.

A numerical rating seems pointless after that rant, but I don't want to be the thread breaker here, so I'll give you an 8/10.

2012-11-06, 10:00 AM
Fun and cutesy little avvie. Bonus points for showing us a slice from the middle of a story. Artistically, it works to show the avvie as if it was right out of the webcomic.

.... Yeah. Yup. Mhm. 6.5/10.

A Rainy Knight
2012-11-07, 08:32 PM
It works (and I get the reference to Crisis), but it looks a little stiff. The pant legs and cape in particular just seem sort of blocky, and the hair is a little simple. That said, the keytar looks nice. I'll give it 6.5/10 overall.

2012-11-07, 08:37 PM
Defiantly reminds me of some anime scenes of just happy go lucky people. 9/10

2012-11-07, 08:39 PM

Ooh, one of the default avatars! They're obviously not as detailed as some of the ones our resident avatarists tirelessly slave over, but I just feel so warm and nostalgic when I see them and think back to my days with Default Blue Knight Guy. I give it 7.5/10 through the fuzzy lens of nostalgia. Welcome to the Playground, by the way!

2012-11-07, 11:18 PM
I see... pants. The art itself has a somewhat Seussical feel to it, and I quite enjoy the inherent whimsy. .8c/lightspeed.

2012-11-07, 11:28 PM
Huh, an interesting avatar. Wings outswept and soaring, like the design of the head, but think greater detail could be given to the feathers, they look a little stiff.

2012-11-08, 12:35 AM
A...changeling bunny.

In all seriousness, a very well-designed avatar: clean, recognizable, and terrifying. My only gripe is that it isn't sized quite right to fit, causing bits of it to be slightly clipped. 9/10

Everytime I see your avatar, I giggle a little.

fun avvie, pleasing to look at. Shield is a nice piece to set everything off. Not totally seeing the story behind it, but still fun.

6/10, I think that maybe you might need a new one soon.

Original, interesting, related to OOTS, I'll give you 9.2 out of 10

2012-12-10, 01:31 PM
Very nice. I like how the jacket is detailed without any of the details becoming too small to make out (same with the 5 O'clock shadow). I will say that I'm suddenly unsure about the hair. From a distance, I thought it was dark red hair, with an anime-esque lighter part where the light hit, but upon closer inspection it looks like a headband around black hair. Also, this is a bit of a nitpick, but the face looks a bit casual for someone wielding dual flames. Looking closer, I think I can see one of those flat-eyebrow-expressions that turns a smile into a smug smile? If it's there, it is very hard to see against the hair, I feel that it would have made the pose have a bit more personality if it was more visible. If it isn't there, ignore all that, I'm seeing things again. Overall, I really like it. The clothes, hair, beard, and spell tell a lot about the character at a glance, and that's what an avatar should do.

Very nice avatar. I like the line weight, though it could be a tad more dynamic. The details themselves are very good. I like the sword and the hair, the jacket and the sash, and the way the tail sorta snakes its way there without being overly 'look at me!'. The lightning effect looks good, and the pose is very nice.

Now the few tips I have come from the face and the body. The eyes look strangely sized, like the right eye (our left) is somewhat too much bigger than the left. The mouth has a strange curve to it that seems unnatural in OotS style. It might be the details but somehow the body looks flat and non-feminine.

The horns do look good, but I think their positioning is off somehow. The coloring of the entire thing is strong, but I feel the colours clash with each other somewhat.

Overall I still liked it, it's a good avatar. 8/10

2012-12-28, 04:23 AM
Thread almost dead? I think not!
Though drastic measures are required to save it...

A very good Christmas avatar. The red and gold of the present contrast excellently with the green of the Gnome's attire and hair.
Finally, I admire anyone with the patience to work with green as it is a colour that I loathe working with.

Full version of avatar:

2012-12-28, 04:28 AM
An interesting avatar. It has a dynamic pose and lots of detail. However, that detail is lost in the smaller scale. This has nothing to do with the quality of the avatar, but every time I see it, I can't help but think of Tom Baker's doctor.

All in all, 9/10.

2012-12-28, 04:59 AM
A humanized, OOTS-style Pinkie Pie? A very cute idea. This one is very well drawn, in terms of line weight and color choice. However, something about it bugs me a bit: the pose. While it would be wrong to call it static, it just doesn't seem to reflect well on the character, or rather, it doesn't do much to reflect her personality. Pinkie is very rarely smiling and standing still at the same time, you see, and someone unfamiliar with the show wouldn't be able to tell anything about the character as portrayed here aside from the fact that she dresses colorfully.

Still, it is decently bright and adorable, so I can't get too down on it. 8/10

I really like this avatar. The details are good without being too simple, the color scheme works really well, the idea is funny, it's just very good. The book's 3D shape is excellent, and the action is really clear. The only two nitpicks I have is that it could use a tad bit more dynamic line weight and the ninja assassin's eyes are a little big, but otherwise this is an amazing avatar. 9.75/10

2012-12-31, 04:41 PM
It's a standard, vaguely Irish pony, possibly made with templates. I have to hand it to Elemental, it takes patience to so closely emulate that cartoon style. It's certainly more difficult than emulating OotS style. However, I suppose I hold ponytars to a higher standard than OotStars; her lack of a dynamic pose or expression does not make her a particularly striking or memorable pony.

2012-12-31, 04:53 PM
Extremely well-made. Shows strong shading and a large range of detailed textures. Only problem I can see is that the bow and the tail are a bit hard to differentiate, but that's really quite minor. 10/10

2013-01-01, 10:30 AM
Lateral, bro, you are on fire. Commander, sir, yes sir, you look spiffin' in that getup, sir! 10/10, sir.

2013-01-01, 12:41 PM
The pose looks good at first, but if you look at it longer it looks really awkward. The body looks frozen and stiff. The way his arm is bent looks somewhat off, I think his arm is too long? The hair is way too flat on his head, it needs to not stick to his skull so much. The line weight should be more dynamic and his eyes are too small

Gnomish Wanderer
2013-01-03, 06:48 PM
Hm, I like it. Borderless (or in this case border-lite) OotS avatars always seem off, to me, like the border is missing rather than removed. In this case it makes your avatar's chin run together with her chest a little.

The hair is very well-designed, I love how it flows. The glasses, while simple, are very effective and a nice touch. The touch of freckles was brilliant. I like how the flower is color-coded with the clothing. In fact in all the color combinations go really good together.

Try curving the legs and feet a little more, right now they look stiff. The arms, too, seem almost too simple a curve and could use a slight tweak to add life. The clothing is simple but not bad, you might want to try to and details like folds or shadows perhaps, but that's not necessary except to make it more dynamic.

Overall it's pretty good. 8/10

The concept is quite interesting. In my imagination, the object behind Priestess!Gnomish is a gnomish invention; a magic construct powered by the Elemental Plane of Light, the bane of all undead creatures. The colours are vivid, although orange/yellow/green isn't my favourite combination.

Recently, I came across some tutorials on shading, and a tip from them really caught my attention. This one shows it succinctly: [LINK] (http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/?q=dodge+burn+shade#/d5mxo64). It shows basic tips on getting better results with shading, which is applicable even to stick figure art. I've kept this in mind since the last few pieces I've done.

I think the shadows on Priestess!Gnomish's left side could benefit from a slightly bluish cast.

I still think the eyes are too high on her head, which can be fixed by moving the skull mask down. If you want to keep her mouth visible, the simple solution would be to shorten the jaw/teeth section of the mask.

Also, the construct and Gnomish have different levels of detail, which looks slightly odd.

Overall, it's a good avatar. 9/10

Wow, that's a nice Mokou. The shading seems a little sharp, but it's definitely a 9/10.

Icekiller. This avatar looks awesome, but just a tad grainy, so 8.5/10.

It looks more like he's scratching the back of his head with that ax than wielding it. The craft is good though. Eyes might be a little high up. 9/10

It's very good, Mauve. The animation seems fluid enough and the way it transforms is really cool. I don't know enough about animation to give it a very detailed critique, but the colors are very good and I like how the petals curves turn into the light spots on the mistletoe. Very nice. 10/10

I like this one, but the difference in style between the Sun and the Gnomes is a bit jarring. Individually, I'd say each element is 10/10, but combined they lose a point.

2013-01-07, 03:58 AM
It's nice, but he's just so angry.

This being small bit of an image by a professional artist so different from the basic style you'll see around, I'm not sure how this thread is a good place to have it rated ?
I guessd I could comment on how large the chest seems to be while the head seems small in comparaison, I dunno ?

so, Yes it's very very well drawn (and if it is from you then congratulation) and pretty. but if you don't mind I won't rate it as I don't believe myself qualified for it.

2013-01-07, 09:55 AM
That one's awesome. I really like it, though you can't see many details.

Interesting dragonpuppy, though I would have never guessed that to be its species without written identification. It seems nearly photorealistic, which is cool. The dog itself reminds me of a gargoyle for some reason. The wings are very cool. Points off for not being in OotS-style though. 8/10

I really like the shading. It's just a tad bit confusing to look at, but very cool nonetheless.

I think it would look a bit better with thicker lines, but I like it. 7/10.

Interesting pony. The art itself is sufficiently well-done, though I am unfamiliar with the work it stems (that Naruto thing, right?). The earrings are very excellent, as is the cloak with the split cloud pattern. The only thin that really bugs me is the eyes, but I assume it has precedent in the anime. Slight points off for non-OotS style, as I am known to do. 8.85/10

Mr. August was the artist in question I assume?
Anyway... Artist aside, I like it. It's very dramatic and the lighting effects are rather well drawn.

A really good evil hellish horse. Great all around, also for example the eyes.

My current avatar I used for "Basic Avatar Week". It was my first custom-requested avatar here ever. Made by Chris the Pontifex (who had a corresponding Captain avatar) around April the 1st, 2006. He based it on the standard OoTs avatar I used back then, the 'RedSorcererGirl'.

Dark, mysterious, robotic - the only thing I don't like (and this is just a personal thing) is that it's a pony. :smalltongue:

4/10. It's a little hard to make out, and there's an unnecessary background. It might get at least a 5 if you were more respectful, though.

8/10. It's very nicely made, and I like it even though I'm not a fan of MLP.

Hallo, Cuthalion. Nice Denethor avatar. LotR characters are usually part of the main fellowship, it's really nice to see such an interesting and unusal one.

The avatar itself is very nice and definitely looks like the guy. I like the color scheme, they were well-chosen. The outfit is top-rate and I fully approve.

The only problems I have with it are minor things. The hands are really tiny, the line work could use some work to get the consistency to be better weighted, and those eyes are huge with such a tiny angry line.

The wood below was confusing at first, but now that I see it for what it is I think it was very well-handled. I'll give it a 7/10

So are you gonna follow this up with an avatar of him on fire? :smalltongue:
I feel like I'm a little too callous towards you in general and this is a little apology

You're having some angle troubles here. He's slightly turned, so make the vest part on the closer (left) side of his torso slightly bigger. The beard and mouth do nothing to help shape the head. Curve them and it will help. Tilt the body and face so it follows his eyes and his shooting arm.
Clothing and detail are great, 8/10

2013-02-09, 02:02 PM
Generally quite nice. A bit blurry, but I can still sort of tell what's going on. 9/10.

Well, there's quite a lot going on, but I like it! 9/10

2013-02-09, 02:42 PM
Now that I know what the symbol is, it isn't that bad. A very simple pony, and the horn is thin, but I like it. 7.5/10.

Could you, when you rate my avatar, also pick which one of these you prefer?

2013-02-09, 10:49 PM
Very nice robes, and the movement of the flame of the torch as the latter is thrown upon the pyre gives a great feeling of motion to the piece. Speaking of which, the pyre has a great texture to it. You can almost sense the rage as the fires are lit. Plus, it's LoTR.
However, the eyebrow seems ever-so-slightly off for some reason, and the hairline is a little bit strange.
Still, 9/10.

I also like the guard on the left more than the one on the right. The former just seems slightly better defined, with better contrast.

2013-02-09, 10:55 PM
I like the color scheme, the pose, and the look in general. Really cool as a whole. 8.5/10

2013-02-10, 01:22 PM
Looks a bit rough and I'm not really a fan of coloured eyes on OotSatars, unless they have some reason for it like a supernatural being. But nice pose (both entities).

2013-02-10, 07:34 PM
I like it, though it has thin lines. 8/10.

Elemental's ponies get progressively better.

Which is to say, this is very good work. The body is sufficiently 'pony' enough with no flaws. The way the far legs are shaded is perfect. The mane and tail coloration is pretty amazing, the two colors worked really really well, not to mention just how the hair was furrowed just right. The eye is really pretty. It's excellent overall. I wish I could give it some actual critique, but I don't know enough about the pony style to have much more of a critical eye than pointing out how great it is.
10/10, but a little off for non-OotS style... 9.9/10

TPBM, bigger for detail

@v Whoa, very nice examination, thank you so much. The avatar is, in fact, a gnome who is a little on the tall side to fit in the level of detail I intended with the shirt and pants. Really the head should take up MORE of the avatar ie Belkar and the Gnomes shown so far in typical Giant style, but Belkar's body type is more indicative of Roy (thick and short) while I consider my gnomes to have a more Elan/Haley body equivalent (thin and long).

2013-02-11, 12:12 AM
This is an interesting avatar.
Primarily, the character comes across as supremely bold, perhaps even roguishly arrogant, although further information would be required to validate this conjecture.

The open shirt and jeans give the impression of a certain devil-may-care attitude, and the design overall appears to convey some kind of lady's man. Or something along those lines.
The attire could go well with a motor cycle.

The overall style seems simple, but to the point. There isn't much detail, save for the torso, which makes the medium decidedly succinct. The color scheme is somewhat muted, though, with the kaki jacket.
The facial expression, in keeping with the piece, is minimalist. Bold lines outline the character, making for a clearly visible and delineated avatar. However, he appears to be missing an eyebrow.

Lastly, we come to the head. Even by OotS standards, it is disproportionately large; indeed, it may well be larger than the rest of the body in its entirety. This leads one to wonder if the head size is, beyond just a stylistic choice, a visual metaphor for the avatar's self-perception and, perhaps, egotistical obtuseness, although this is again conjecture on my part.

Altogether, I would give it an 8/10.
With all of this coming with the caveat that I have really no idea what I'm talking about.

Edit: Is he a gnome or halfling? A tall gnome or halfling?

2013-02-11, 09:53 AM
This one is blurry, and I assume it was drawn in MS Paint. You can't easily see many details, and i assume the arms are around the back? The cloak should have a reason for going that way, though. Pretty good. 7/10.

2013-02-12, 01:49 AM
Very nice pyre. 10/10.

2013-02-12, 09:15 AM
Me likes it. It's pretty good, though it would probably work against the Icekiller better if it was a pony or something. Since I know what it is, 8/10 for itself, 5/10 for the art.

Hallo Maxios. Nice avatar here

Firstly, I do not know who 'Art Davis' is, but the idea presents itself pretty clearly. He seems to be some kind of space bounty hunter or captain perhaps, though drink has taken him. It's an interesting idea as there's aren't many on the forums with scifi avatars.

Now, starting with line weight, it has a general consistency which is good. The borders around the head, body, arms, and shoes complement each other well. I'd say there is a slight problem with item shrinkage. Basically the bottle and the gun, while they look fine on their own, have a line weight that is much too thin for the avatar and makes them look out of place. The details on the chest experience the same issue.

The color combination is good, the green works well with the brown and darker gray. The hair , however, is tooo dark, even for black hair you want to choose just a very dark grey so the differences between the borders and the hair are apparent. I like the facial coloring of the five-o-clock shadow, but it could use some sculpting to match the curve of teh face better.

In terms of the angle, it's a little severe. The legs and head both are turned to a strong left, but the body and arms are facing forwards which makes him look wrong or twisted somehow.

Lastly, I don't know what's up with the circles on the knees but i don't like them. It also reveals how straight the legs are, every limb should have a bit of a curve to it.

Hope this helps! It's a pretty good avatar, regardless. 5.6/10

Aaaawwww, I can't rate your delicious GB one? :smallfrown::smalltongue:

I do like this one a lot. The torso has a great deal of 'volume' to it, as opposed to looking completely flat, and the hair is perfect, which tends to be a trouble spot with your avatars, usually. As mentioned up in the A&C section, the only problem I have with it is the guns, which sort of get cluttered together in the front. Maybe a slight alteration of pose would make it better. The boots are also slightly strange in their angling.
