As you sit in the tavern, you don't see many patrons coming or going. A quick glance around the room confirms that you are one of eight patrons remaining in the bar. Why would someone send you to a bar like this? Why did this someone choose you? Will the job pay what your time is worth? These and more questions swirl around in your head, perhaps even more so after a couple drinks, when you realize that it's just about eight. As if to confirm your suspicions, the door swings wide open. Along with a gust of dry summer air comes a keen eyed male human, dressed in simple but colorful uniform with leather armor protecting vital areas. There's an emblem of a two headed bronze eagle on the right side of his chest. He paused a moment to take in the scene of people, and to take a head count. "Well, there's only one reason why so many well-armed folk sitting in the same dingy bar," he begins with a quick smile to the bartender, "they were summoned. I believe more than one of you received a folded parchment from one of our messengers. Perhaps asking for skilled individuals for hire. If this is the case, then it would be in your best interest to follow me. We will adjourn to a more--refined location.

Each of you had been approached the previous night by various nobodies-emissaries of a local trades protection agency, Eagle Regiment, and given a letter. Upon opening this letter, you found a piece of parchment which read:

-Muscle and Skill Required-
Dangerous thieves attacking caravans!
Reward: 300 gold
Meet at the Rough Draft, Tomorrow at 8.

Creos is coming up on the hottest parts of the summer. As usual, there are many people about at all times during the day and night. Creos never sleeps. It is about 6 o'clock right now. You all sit in a bar called the Rough Draft. Looking around, it seems like a lower-end bar, but it's in a safe part of town. The district you are in is Angstibule. It is the largest harbor on Creos, and mostly owned by the Carver Exchange, and therefore stays mostly neutral to all factions passing through.

Dr. Monroe

The strange man, in even a stranger outfit, sits at the bar with a free beverage of water. He doesn't appear to be able to drink anything due to the hood-like mask covering his face, though his glass seems to be half-full although someone has been drinking from it. A backpack and a cane sit by his chair, the pack looking surprisingly filled with an assortment of items that almost poor out of it.
When the person announces for people interested in the what was mentioned in the parchment to follow him outside, the strange man lifts up his pack and props himself out of his chair with the cane. He then silently walks after the man as he looks around at whoever else may be joining him.

OOC: Forget everything about what has happened in the OOC, this is the real Dr. Monroe Hebowitz! Though some of his personality was fleshed out. Most of what happened there was just for fun and to incite some interesting RP and reasoning capabilities.

Edit: Also, decided to help the DM by placing the Intro he had in the OOC here.

Towards the back of the bar sits a grizzled man aged before his time. He smells of smoke and appears to be angry about something as he quietly cleans his gun. And his gun was a beaut. an engraved gnomish breachloader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferguson_rifle) that looked just as much a piece of art as a weapon. A walking resume that says

"this man knows how to shoot"

As the keen eyed man turns to leave he packs up his things and follows him out not giving heed to anyone else in the room

Sarka sat at the bar and ordered a drink. She kept her face turned down, letting her hood and long, wavy black hair conceal her features. A red tail sometimes peaked from under the bottom of her cloak. Her left hand supported her head as she listened to the faint ticking that was barely audible in the tense silence that pervaded the room. While waiting for the bartender to bring her whiskey, Sarka was scoping out the other patrons. She wanted to sure that they had the same look of nervous apprehension she was trying to mask. Walking into an ambush would ruin her buzz.

After the man made his entrance, Sarka turned her head towards the door and studied the stranger, trying to pace his uniform to make sure it was safe to follow him. She still rose and let him lead the way, but kept a close eye from any available escape routes.

Shadra sits non-chalantly at the bar, drinking beer of middling quality. His deep blue eyes examine the assorted patrons. The adjacent tiefling woman sitting catches the burly half-orcs attention. He begins to order her a drink before the keen-eyed man interrupts him. Shadra shrugs, pays his tab, and follows his would-be employer outside, drink in hand. He didn't like signing up for mystery jobs, but he needed to make this month's rent.

Quandary

A gnome sits in a booth by himself. He has a few glasses filled with liquids of various proofs sporadically placed around the table. In between the glasses all manner of papers are strewn about. Diagrams of various designs, from the mundane to the unfeasable lay heaped around him.

As the man makes his announcement, he hurriedly stuffs his pack with the various schematics and makes toward the door. Many of the items he carries with him, you can tell, have been custom made and as he walks by you the sharp smells of ammonia and other alchemical items are obvious.

He smiles broadly and briskly hurries to catch up to the man.

Mattias had chosen a back corner, where he could watch everyone else. After looking down at his paper and hearing the man speak, he lets curiosity get the best of him. This could be a threat to his city...or it could be the very thing he is looking for to make everything right again. He stands up and follows the other patrons out of the bar.

Einseld's massive body is seated on a chair in the most shadowy corner of the tavern, he stroked his long and wicked claws across the flat of the great curved blade held by his other clawed hand. This ccreated a rather irritating if nearly silent cacophony, which only created a slight smile on the man's face. Beads of glowing magma crept down the charred and black armor that covered his entire body illuminating small parts of the corner.

Looking up as the uniformed man left the room, Einseld's eyes lit up in a blaze of yellow and crimson. "This may not be the most opportune of conditions, but it will serve for now."
He pushed the sword into the massive sheathe tied to his back and followed the small congregation of men and women that had similar ideas as himself.

The man swiftly walks out of the door, and stands just to the left of the entrance as you all come to gather next to him. He smiles as he takes each of you into his gaze. Giving a nod to some, and tittering or looking with great curiosity at others. After all eight of you have assembled, he turns around and quickly walks down the pier with only a quick bidding as an accompaniment, "this way."

The surrounding streets are as busy as they were midday, despite it being dusk at present. The massive paved road reaches about 50 feet across, ending abruptly with a small railing and then the ocean after a long drop. Extending from the road are twenty equally massive docks extending out into the gulf, with many smaller docks beyond them. On these docks, merchandise is being loaded, unloaded, imported, shipped, reshipped, inspected, stolen, found, etc. Hundreds of individuals are managing thousands of transactions moving millions of gold pieces daily. The opposite side of the street is lined with tall buildings, each with at least a couple shops at their base sporting the finest of balms, tinctures, jewelry, weapons, textiles, potions and food from all corners of the world, all within walking distance. This is the hub and heart of Creos' economy, Angstibule.

The man moves North along the pier, about fifteen feet in front of the quickest of your group. He checks over his shoulder every hundred yards or so to make sure you're all there. After walking for several miles, he stops at a diner, 'Siggi's Delicatessen'. He opens the door gestures for you all to come in with a great smile and adds, "Please come in. My associate, Nebu will show you to the upstairs room. He is a tengu wearing the same outfit I am, sitting just inside. Tell him that Wendell will be in shortly. That's me. I wouldn't advise ordering food, it's horrible. However, the coffee is spot on and even a dwarf can't ruin pouring a pint."

From the outside, the diner is nothing special-- a brick building with a panel of windows advertising specials and offering the name of the establishment. Inside, you take a couple steps downward into a wide-open lounge-style room with many polished wooden tables, booths, and stools surrounding the well-equipped bar. The walls are covered in great paintings of what must be important (mostly dwarven) individuals. There are many patrons of diverse backgrounds enjoying themselves loudly. Behind the bar stands a thick-necked dwarf with small spectacles adorning his round face. A great bluish-grey, intricately weaved beard holds an ornate beard clasp depicting two fighting silver bears that hangs from a mouth with more than one silver tooth. These are more than visible in the grand smile he offers all who come into his establishment. As you all start to enter the room, he bellows from his position easily cutting through the cacophonous atmosphere, "Welcome to the greatest ale lounge on the pier. Please get comfortable, and don't cause any trouble. Leave yer' ego at the door." From a nearby table, a tengu dressed in the Eagle Regiment garb retorts to the barkeep with a gin, "Is that what you are calling it, Sigg? I swear I heard Barnaby 'round the corner say it's 'the worst rum drenched gutter you'd be smart to keep away from'." "Do you want to go drink the grog he offers then, Nebu? Sounds like you don't want anything from here," Siggi replies casually.

Kydell
2012-08-20, 01:27 AM
Nebu appears to be scanning the lounge when he happens upon you. He scrutinizes your troupe of mismatched tradesmen and wanderers when he decidedly jumps down from his chair. The tengu is just over 5 feet tall, with a thin figure. He bears the same red, green and blue leathers and bronze eagle Brooch as the human, with a few daggers on a bandolier, and two swords on either hip. He ambles towards your crowd and throws out an odd look before speaking in an incredibly sarcastic voice sounding perfectly like the bartender's, "If you wouldn't mind followin' me through the best damn alehouse in the f***in world, I'll show ya' to the meetin' room." "Watch it, bird," Siggi says, stifling his laughter.

Nebu offers a wide grin to Siggi as he gestures for you to follow him. He walks up a flight of stairs to the right of the entrance that lead to the second story lining the wall facing the bar. He walks along the aisle between tables and booths with port hole windows to view the busy streets. At the end of the aisle is a secondary path giving access to a few doors placed evenly along the wall. The tengu walks to the last one and opens the door. Inside this room is one large round table with twelve padded ironwood chairs. This room has a rope near the door to ring a bell for service, and a large window in the back with blue-grey cloth curtains. Nebu ushers the group in using a spot-on impression of the human, Wendell, "Come on in and take a seat, everyone. When Wendell arrives, we'll begin the debriefing."

The doctor takes a seat and places his bag off to the side. He looks through his bag a few times and seems to organize its contents. After a few seconds of this, he speaks up towards the Tengu,

"So, Mr. Nebu, are you perhaps our client? I only ask because the message was vague regarding who we'd be working for."

Sarka was reassured by the public nature of the meeting place. It is less likely they are going to try anything. Unless they bribed the owner. Best to keep that look out for exits.

"Since both you boys look like you are in uniform, I'm guessing this is not a personal matter, is it?" She knew that it was less likely for them to skip out on payment, but the tiefling also knew that the job might lead to something bigger if the protection agency was bringing in this much help in such an official manner.

Quandary

The wide eyed gnome follows the group sporadically throughout the day, often getting caught up looking at trinkets in the stalls or interesting architecture along the seafront. More than once he has had to run to catch up to the group again.

When he wasn't off examining some small marvel, he was happily talking about the last one he saw. How it refracted the light, or how the overhang flatters the patio, or how they could improve the gizmo by removing somethingorother. You gather that the young gnome does not mind talking. Not in the least.

This follows true even in the tavern. Constantly looking around nooks and appraising crannies, it's only natural that by the time he gets to the room, he is delighted to see the roped bell. Tugging on it a few times to make sure it's functional (And doesn't need upgrading) he giggles lightly to himself and finds his way into the room.

He sits at the table and unpacks a small pile of paperwork written in a variety of things; Parchment, napkins, leather. He begins scrawling madly again, often jumping from one idea to the next mid-diagram and then returning to revisit it.

"Well, whatever it is, it sounds intriguing. Not often do you need this many people. OH! My name is Quandary, by the way! I work at the smithery in the Gnomish district. And the carpenter. And the sculptor. Well, basically, I do what needs doing."

Quandary smiles broadly and earnestly toward the group, never faltering in his scribbling.

Einseld slides into the room silently, taking deliberate measures to not create any sort of noise to attracted unwanted attention. Walking towards the back of the room, he instinctively places his left hand on the pommel of the sword sheathed on his hip. The adornment is clear to anyone who takes the effort to look, a blood red spindle with a small human skull suspended within. He simply stands against the wall, leaning the weight of his armored body against it.
"Patience, for we shall soon reach our goal..."

Nebu holds the inward swinging door, and studies the mob as it assembles. To Sarka's entering comment, he replies in a mild, articulate voice, "Certainly isn't. Need to get this shipment of supplies to our fort by sunrise. Going through some dirty neighborhoods, and need the help of some skillful folks such as yourselves to make it out alive." A couple more individuals enter and take a seat. When Mattias expresses his confusion, Nebu scoffs, then replies, "It's simple. A swift man such as yourself could detach from our unit, and give word to those who need it. I will get to why we chose each of you as soon as we are all here." As the last few meander in, Nebu finds amusement in the half-orc's presentation. Nebu smiles at the doctor after he asks about the message, then replies, "The message was expressly vague, to avoid knowledge of when and where we would be leaving. We represent the Eagle Regiment (he gestures to his brooch), there is no who, other than the faction. If things go well, we'll introduce you to the troupe, and you will get your pay. If things go wrong, we'll see who's left alive to pick up the pieces." As the crew of eight finally get situated, Nebu takes one quick look out of the door, gives a gesture to who you can only assume is Wendell below, and comes back in closing the door behind him. He stands to the left of the door, in between it and the table. After a few moments pass, approaching footsteps signal Wendell's approach. The door opens and he ducks inside, quickly shutting the door behind him. With a gracious smile, he begins, "Welcome, everybody. My name is Wendell, and this is my first associate, Nebu. Our third compatriot, Suezo will be arriving shortly when the final inspections have been made on the merchandise. You all must be wondering why you were approached by us and summoned here. We are delivering a shipment of much-needed wepons, armor, fuel, and food to our home-fort of Weatherby. We have been experiencing heavy opposition from rabble in nearby communities, and need this small parcel to prolong our efforts to keep the remaining members of our guild alive. We don't have any agents in the harbor today except for the three of us, so immediate recruitment was necessary. We require strength to defend ourselves against the kobold warrens we will be passing over (with this, he gestures to obadiah, einseld and shadra). We need guile to get past highwaymen that are undoubtedly on the trail at night (this accompanied with a nod to Sarka and Skavok). This trip must also have medical supervisors, and general handimen to sort out healing and solving problems along the way (with each description he indicates Dr. Monroe and Quandary respectively). And lastly, not only will a monk give us a look of nonviolence, but we need someone trained in movement to deliver a message to Weatherby if necessary(He smiles kindly at Mattias). Are there any questions?"

Sarka noticed Sharda's glare, and chose to remain discrete about it. Better not get on bad side of the muscle, especially before the job. It was best not to rock the boat until reaching shore.

While listening to Wendell's explanation, she took note of the fetchling as his name was called. He did not look that reliable, but he would at least make for a distraction in a pinch. She quietly greeted him while Wendell continued his discussion "Looks like we might end up being paired up. Nice working with you." Sarka, held out her left hand. She took a small pleasure in seeing people's reaction to the prosthetic as she used it to measure people.

While waiting for Shavok's response, she raised a question. "Anything we need to know about the highwaymen? I tend not to like... surprises."

Kydell
2012-08-20, 11:11 PM
"Understandably so. There shouldn't be anything surprising. A few men with guns, looking to take our loot. The gnolls and kobolds of the fury clan, however, are something to watch out for. We will be passing over a lesser kobold warren, Goresh. This is the fastest route to our community at this time, and is unavoidable. The fury clan comes with numbers to spare. Mostly melee fighters, or if we're lucky, we might nab one of the magic ones," Wendell explains to Sarka.

Unfortunately, we are in a tough spot at the moment, and only Nebu, Suezo and myself are in the area. Tonight is a crucial night to aid our forts defenses. We must make it there before sunrise, or it is possible we could lose our fort. If your heart lies in the harbor, then by all means stay. Also, because this is a job that's, as you put it, 'taxing on time and resources', we will offer you compensation for ammo spent, plus extra ammo and gunpowder.
