Welcome to the Favourite Character Tournament! This 96-man, 24-seed tournament will run for the next few mon-... next yea-... probably forever. But I'll be putting multiple match-ups on at a time to try and avert this, so fingers crossed.

This thread is no longer active. Here is Part 2 (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=282222)

"It's not a bug, it's a feature."
1: Roy Greenhilt
VS
Knot-Topped Resistance Leader
"BAH! The flame-haired trollop is an evil interloper, sent by our enemies to sow dissent!"

"Yes, it is I, Banjo the Clown, god of puppets! I have seen you orcs worshipping me, and have chosen this moment to make my will known. Do not harm the fair human! He is my prophet, and shall not have one silky luxurious hair put out of place! Defy me, and prepare to feel my googly-eyed wrath!"
Banjo
VS
Gortok the Destroyer
"Who will be the moron after Gortok's white-hot anger crushes your little body into a mangled bloody pulp while Gortok sings a jaunty turn to accompany your unanswered cries for mercy?"

"Ah, the life of an adventuring cleric. I remember it well. A perpetual struggle to maintain the hit point totals of four or five nigh-suicidal tomb robbers determined to deplete them at all costs. Like bailing out a sinking ship with a thimble, most days."
Malack
VS
'Kaboom' Redaxe
"Did I say "get me some booty"? I meant ta say, "respect yer thoughts an' opinions as fellow humanoids".

"Now take your adventurers and get out of my city before I find a way to charge you with something in this mess. I'm going to have a tough enough time explaining this to the mayor as it is..."
Rookie Cop
VS
24: Daigo Da-
"Sir, I know it isn't really my place to say, but... if we're ever going to ever retake the city, we'll need you leading the charge. Not the nobles, who are, as the bard said, doodoo heads. You're a very good paladin sir-but right now, I think our people need their lord more than they need a paladin.

The main character versus that angry guy? I'll go with Roy Greenhilt.

All hail Banjo the Clown!

That quote from Kaboom is hilarious, but he can't compete with Malack.

Daigo Da-. Rookie was a bit of fun, but only together with Chief and even in that duo he was the second funniest.

Roy. Perhaps the Bag of Tricks has cats too? Greatsword might just do the trick in a pinch.

Banjo. This match favors him. He doesn't even need to go all Banjulhu.

Malack. Harm. Quickened Inflict Moderate Wounds.

For every new comic published. Capitalising on the post-new comic boo-... slight jump in forum activity, plus I sort of lose interest in this place after two weeks or so since the previous strip.

You could have posted that right after the first post.

The OP could have gone, "The randomizer determined these four matches...so, after simply eliminating the two no-names, Gortok, and the dwarven bomber, the next match will be..."

If you don't think these matches are competitive enough, you may not enjoy the next... well, almost the entire first round -_-. There's a reason these are going up four at a time.

And Rookie Cop was a very important character. He's featuring in one of the supplemental stories Giant promised to make in his suicidally extensive list of Kickstarter rewards. So there :smalltongue:

Maybe next time, sort them into brackets: A PC bracket, a villain bracket, an NPC bracket for humans, and an NPC bracket for non-humans/gods/pets/etc. Whittle each bracket down to a top 4 or 8 and then merge the brackets and reshuffle.

Roy Greenhilt. I can't even remember the resistance leader.

Gortok, for he has more personality and power than Banjo, who must gain his power from his followers.

Malack because I can't help but like intelligent antagonists. 'Kaboom' was alright in his own way, but not memorable enough to stand a chance.

Daigo Da-, mainly because for some reason the cops didn't interest me too much. Well, neither did Daigo Da-, but a little more so than the latter.

Also, of the four characters who are doomed to lose, I think that Gortok will make the strongest showing. He even made an impression on Belkar, so that must mean something.

Really? I would have guessed the Rookie Cop (and the trends so far seem to be bearing that out, in fact). When the entire point of your character is being an ex-redshirt, you're going to have less of an advantage over a no-name character than most would.

Gortok 13-25 Banjo
Rookie Cop 12-26 Daigo

So, they're both pretty close to each other. Gortok has the advantage of having one of the better quotes, and being against someone who a lot of people won't vote for as Banjo isn't really a character per se.

1: Roy Greenhilt - 48 - 97.95%
VS
Knot-Topped Resistance Leader - 1 - 2.04%

Credit goes to martianmister, the only poster brave enough to vote for the poor guy who ended up being ripped in half (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0826.html).

Banjo - 32 - 66.66%
VS
Gortok the Destroyer - 16 - 33.33%

Gortok did pretty well for a guy who was only included because I realised I had put down Shojo twice.

Malack - 42 - 84.00%
VS
'Kaboom' Redaxe - 8 - 16.00%

That poor dwarf. One of the minor villains I was hoping could show up again, but alas, it wasn't so.

Rookie Cop - 12 - 24.49%
VS
24: Daigo Da- - 37 - 75.51%

Rookie Cop was another one of my favourite background NPCs that I hoped could show up again. Then again, so is DAIGO DA-

"Yeah, uh, MOST people don't kill, Haley! That's why there are laws against murder. It's really only adventurers who think, 'Hmm, how can I solve this problem? Oh, right, bloodshed!"
12: Celia
VS
Yikyik (aka 'the first one'.)
"What? He totally provoked me! He left my threatened area!"

"I coulda been a baker, you know. They said my cherry turnovers were the best they'd ever tasted."
Wizard Guy
VS
Sara Greenhilt
"It's true, honey. It happened to me too. It turns out I spent eight weeks making love to this knight from-"

"Where are you going?? Come back here and die for my fleeting tactical advantage!!!"
Bozzok
VS
Mr. Jones
"Stop right there! Miss Miyazaki, I have here a court order demanding that you immediately cease and desist all attempts to detect Mr. Bitterleaf's alignment."

"Tear down creation just to see if you can."
Jephton the Unholy (aka 'the sorcerer soul-splice guy', 'scraping the very, very bottom of the barrel')
VS
13: Sabine
"Nale, I can't - I can't hold on!! I'm sorry! I'll be back as soon as I can! Don't do anything too rash - and don't trust any of them. I love you... forever."

Yes, I realise that this round is an emphatic endorsement for a smaller tournament. Vote anyway... please? :smallfrown:

Hm...a character without name vs character who appeared only after her death or as a memory. Wizard Guy it is.

Wizard Guy They're both dead and he is a wizard. Remeber, we don't know if Sara is a good baker too.

Celia (agree with Smolder: more of a vote against Yikyik than a vote for Celia, because to me she was in fact that "loathsome little twirp who's only real personality trait was being an unpleasant pest" -- thanks Boogastreehouse for the wording...)

Wizard Guy (I just didn't find Sara Greenhilt interesting, though between her and her husband I can see how the kids turned out the way they did)

Bozzok (again, agree with Boogastreehouse: because it would be a different story with Mr. Rodriguez, though! "Ohmygod! You have a kitty!", so again it is less an endorsement of one character than a chastisement of another)

Sabine (finally, one that I have an actual clear preference due to the character itself -- Sabine is much more interesting than Jephton the Unholy)

All the names on the list are from the Character Appearances Thread, but only the seeds were arbitrarily determined by number of appearances. There were some omissions from the top 96 (Windstriker, Solt's Donkey, the Order's various mounts from post-Dorukan's Gate for example; sorry to anyone who was looking forward to voting for them), and other inclusions who weren't in the top 96 (Wizard Guy, Gortok the Destroyer, various others who haven't been revealed yet).

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.. . That first one was grossly unfair- I really like the Katos, but I also really like Nale and his role in the strip (I think having two major villains is more awesome than just one), vote for Nale!

And on the other hand, the last one? Damn, that was sad too- I hate Eugene's guts but he makes for awesome conversations with Roy, its just that Tarquin is Tarquin, the definitive Magnificent Bastard.

Doesn't a 96 person tournament need the top 32 seeds to get a 1st round bye?

Otherwise:

R1 96
R2 48
R3 24
R4 12
R5 6
R6 3 :smalleek:

With the top 32 getting byes:

R1 Bottom 64 of the 96 play; top 32 seeds get byes
R2 Winners of R1 plus top 32 seeds = 64
R3 32
R4 16
R5 8
R6 4
R7 2

If you want seven rounds with no byes, you need a 128 person tournament.

In sporting contests that require 1v1, yes. But it is possible for a popularity contest to utilise 1v1v1, or 1v1v1v1, or even 1v1v1v1v1.

So yes, you've discovered the dark secret of this tournament; that the grand final will be 1v1v1. I'm sorry to have deceived you all.

If voter turnout burns out completely (a possibility now that people won't be flocking to the forums as a comic is uploaded), then I'll just put this on hiatus until Rich recovers.

1. Julio Scoundrel. He is at least a character, not a class feature.

2. Sangwaan. Nice contest. I never liked Tsukiko.

3. Leeky Windstaff. The largest ham in the entire comic? Yes please. Alas for Jirix.

4. Roy's Archon. This guy had some nice remarks.

5. Thanh. Please, please eliminate the psychopath.

6. Crystal. A tough contest between two dirtbags, Crystal has an outside chance of getting smarter.

7. No vote.

8. Qarr. I don't like fat dragons.

1. Julio Scoundrel. Mr. Scruffy is only really interesting in relation to Belkar. Julio is awesome all the time.

2. Sangwaan. This is less a vote for Sangwann and more a vote for not-Tsukiko.

3. Jirix. I prefer him to Leeky. No particular reason.

4. Miko Miyazaki. You know, the one we've seen on panel long enough to know things about.

5. Belkar. The only funny thing left in this damn comic strip!

6. Ugh. No vote.

7. Secret SoD Character. Assuming they are who I think they are.

8. Empress of Blood. Something about Qarr has always just rubbed me the wrong way.

Oh wait. Secret SoD character means a character who is a main character in SoD but doesn't appear in the online comic, not an obscure character in SoD, doesn't it?

Mr. Scruffy VS Julio Scoundrél

I never cared much for Julio.

Sangwaan VS Tsukiko

Tsukiko was a very annoying character aside from her final appearance.

Leeky Windstaff VS Jirix

Short-lived, but memorable.

Roy's Archon VS Miko Miyazaki

Whatever people may think of Miko, the arc with her in it was very entertaining.

Belkar Bitterleaf VS Thanh

Thanh is one of the less memorable of the Sapphire Guard.

Crystal VS Girard Draketooth

Dumb evil never wins.

Trigak VS Secret SoD Character

No idea who the latter is.

Empress of Blood VS Qarr

The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

And we open with another tough one. Great characters pitted against eachother... Not-so-great characters pitted against eachother. Well, here goes:

Mr Scruffy, Tsukiko, Jirix, Roy's Archon, Belkar Bitterleaf, Crystal, Secret SoD Character, Qarr

Julio, is hands-down one of the best minor characters ever, channeling so many steroetypes into one precise arc of awesome. But, Scruffy is Scruffy!

Tsukiko is not one of my favorite personalities, but she was very plot-relevant and had a few moments. I'd almost forgotten Sangwaan...

Aaargh! Leeky is, once more, one of my favorite one-arc characters! But Jirix's speech and presence during so many moments of awesome give him an edge.

Miko gave us many great arcs- but I just like R's A better...

Thahn, you great one-arcer, you; this was just one more fight you were not meant to win...

Crystal was annoying. But she made such great fodder for Belkar! Oh, you poor dumb pickle-woman (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0616.html) indeed!

I actually do remember Trigak (who could forget Evan's Spiked Tentacles of Forced Intrusion) but assuming the Secret Character is, well, the only one it should be- no contest.

Qarr. Hands down.

1. Mr. Scruffy. Not the biggest fan of too much meta-references, and Julio is all meta.

2. Tsukiko. Misguided as hell, but interesting.

3. Leeky Windstaff. Loved that dude, wish he stayed in the LG longer. Best of luck, Jirix!

4. Miko Miyazaki. Same reasons as Tsukiko

5. Thanh. I'm fairly neutral on the Belkster, but Thanh flat-out rocked. He and O-Chul exemplified the D&D Paladin for me.

6. Draketooth. See #s 2 and 4

7. SoD Character. And as epic and awesome as that story was, and as much as I like that Secret SoD character, I'd like to protest his inclusion until such time as he appears or is referenced in the main comic. credit oppyu for shutting me down.

8. Qarr. I just like the dude.

The very generous lover advances to Round 2, where he will be destroyed by Haley.

Wouldn't it be more interesting if the winners of the first round got all shuffled up again, forming new groups? I think it is more thrilling if we don't already know the match-ups for the second round. Just a suggestion.

I have been appropriately silenced.

Edit: I second 2323mike's idea. That should totally be a consideration, though I do realize it would destroy the standard pyramid structure tourneys typically use.

oppyu
2013-01-02, 12:19 PM
It would make things interesting, but the point of a seeded pyramid structure is to make sure Haley comes up against Roy in round 6, not round 2. I could go through and only shuffle the non-seeds, but at that point there's enough effort involved that the idea hits the wall of 'you already have an excel spreadsheet drawn up, and it took you enough time to track down the one strip in oots history where Sangwaan had relevant dialogue'.

Seriously, if you guys put not-Tsukiko into the second round, I'm probably going to have to go with her anguished scream as Xykon's zombie dragon kills her.

Mr. Scruffy ftw.
Tsukiko - more interesting than Sangwaan (maybe if she hadn't died so soon?), and it was fun to have Belkar make his misogynist jabs at someone who actually deserved them.
Leeky Winstaff - the quoted passage today is one of the best villainous monologues of all time, from one of the best OotS episodes of all time.
Miko Miyazaki - this was a hard one. I like Roy's Archon, and maybe if he gets some more screen time he can have some worthy development. But Miko was just a truly impressive character: complex, powerful, loathe-able, great for making the story more epic, great for having interesting (yet tragic) character development, great at inspiring some of Roy's best quips, and especially great at making the fandom passionate about the OotS.
Belkar - my inherent bias towards good makes me want to pick Thanh, but eh ... he just never won my heart like O-chul or Hinjo. And while Belkar's hateable in plenty of places, he's also loveable sometimes ... and drop-dead funny in others. Besides, I'm interested in seeing just how far his character development will go.
Girard Draketooth - the "PICKLE DEATH ATTACK" (hilarious) almost won me over to voting Crystal. But then I remembered that I don't particularly like Crystal in spite of her idiocy occasionally being very comic. Then again, I don't really like Girard either ... but at least he's more important to the grand plot, which makes him more interesting.
Secret SoD Guy - he almost fixed Redcloak. Maybe his legacy still will be able to make the world a little bit more right?
Qaar ... gotta admire the little guy's gutsy ambition. Plus, the Empress of Blood just wasn't all that entertaining to me, other than the visual spectacle of seeing her for the first time.

Mr. Scruffy, because I can't bear to see Belkar unhappy. Besides, corrupting cats is awesome!

Sangwaan, both because I was always intrigued by the character and because I can't stand Tsukiko.

Jirix, because I have a soft spot for the goblin rebellion.

Miyo Miyakazi, although it's a tough contest. But her ending was just so perfect.

Belkar Bitterleaf. No contest.

Crystal is the best nemesis ever.

Trigak, as I haven't read Start of Darkness.

The Empress of Blood is my hero. Heroine. Whatever.

I have to say, the animal companions aren't my faves. I love Scruffs, but compared to Julio, no contest.

Sangwaan VS Tsukiko

Just for the death scene. Fantastic. One of my favorite moments in the comic (in terms of pure oomph)

Leeky Windstaff VS Jirix

Always liked the gnomes.

Roy's Archon VS Miko Miyazaki

Dang, these are actually two of the characters I liked most (for very different reasons). Miko may have been nasty, but she was brilliantly written. Roy's Archon might not have been in any way deep, but it/he was possibly the nicest character in the strip. Seriously. He's all good.
But Miko played a much larger role, so she gets this.

Belkar Bitterleaf VS Thanh

Thanh was fine. Fine don't cut it for the Belkster.

Crystal VS Girard Draketooth

I don't much like Crystal, but I just can't give it to someone I still feel there's so much we don't know about.

10: Mr. Scruffy - 12 - 57.14%
VS
Julio Scoundrél - 9 - 42.86%

Admirable showing from the few-strip wonder, but the Scruffinator wouldn't be defeated.

Sangwaan - 10 - 47.62%
VS
Tsukiko - 11 - 52.38%

I'll admit, you guys had me worried for a second; at one point Sangwaan was winning 5-1. But sanity and plot relevance prevailed.

Leeky Windstaff - 8 - 38.10%
VS
Jirix - 13 - 61.90%

Redcloak's second-in-command beats the enjoyably hammy but one-arc Leeky Windstaff... hehe, leaky staff.

Roy's Archon - 7 - 33.33%
VS
15: Miko Miyazaki - 14 - 66.67%
Everyone's least favourite paladin makes it through the first round; it'll be interesting to see exactly how strong her hatedom is in future rounds.

4: Belkar Bitterleaf - 12 - 57.14%
VS
Thanh - 9 - 42.86%

Thanh got over 40% of the vote against a protagonist... pretty damn impressive, even if he couldn't pull off the win. We miss you Thanh!

Crystal - 12 - 60.00%

Girard Draketooth - 8 - 40.00%

Pickle death attack for the win! Unrelated, I would totally pay to see a band called Pickle Death Attack.

Trigak - 4 - 22.22%
