During the last major shift in the Nexus government, a group of drow were allowed passage into the city, in return for providing supplies and manpower for the rebuilt government. Since then, drow soldiers have patrolled the streets, visible and uniformed, keeping the peace, often times through the simple application of intimidation. There were rumors, though, of drow who would slip out into the night, hidden and secret, to take care of more... tricky situations. There was no evidence for this, of course, only whispers in the back alleys of the city. Still, it had an impact, and the common criminals of the Nexus were certainly more reluctant to act.

These drow, who had migrated to the ever turbulent Nexus, had recognized their need to rely upon one another, far more so than they would have back in their native Underdark. As such, when they settled, they chose to live close to one another. The neighborhood they had chosen was largely deserted and run-down, a part of the city few chose to live in, and which had little influence or interference from the ruling bodies of the Nexus. By their reasoning, they would bring stability to the area without displacing anyone. Also it would keep them isolated from anyone who might harbor prejudice against their race.

It also kept their society somewhat closed and secret. This fostered even more rumors. Just what were they all doing here? What were they planning? You know those drow. They couldn't be trusted. Despite their claims of doing good, you knew they were up to something.

* * *

The neighborhood had changed since the drow's arrival. It had become darker. The buildings, most reconstructed from the shells of those left behind, were tall and looming, casting deep shadows on the streets below, even at midday. The architecture had a style all its own, the newest construction seemingly molded out of living rock. Varieties of overgrown mushrooms were cultivated along the edges of boulevards to create even more shade, some even sprouted from the sides of buildings forming semicircular awnings. Some of the buildings, mostly those of more conventional construction, were painted in muted earth tones. Rusty reds, muddy browns, a very rare splash of chalky blue. To normal eyes, the dark tones were hardly discernible in the shadows of the neighborhood, but under darkvision, they were truly vibrant works of art. Some buildings flew banners, most prominently the blue and gold of House Xar'Cha, but other sigils also had their place.

A heavy, high wall enclosed Delmah Phor, and it was constantly patrolled by uniformed drow moving from tower to tower. Gates leading into the drow enclave were also guarded by sharp-eyed young soldiers. They questioned the motives of anyone entering, but rarely stopped anyone without reason. Within, most buildings were residences. Most were multistory apartments holding many households. Towards the center of the enclave, the residences became larger. Here, Delmah Phor's most important buildings were also located.

Although outwardly welcome inside the walls of Delmah Phor, strangers are often looked upon with suspicion by the locals. Drow have sharp eyes and a long memory, and are quick to protect what is theirs. If they have reason to believe that one's motives are less than pure, they will not hesitate to take preventive measures. It may be as simple as expelling you from the enclave, or something more personal, and likely untraceable. Be careful, traveler, if you choose to walk these dark streets with dark actions in mind.

Locations
Administrative Headquarters
A tall building, one of the first to be restored, acts as the civic center of Delmah Phor. Broad steps lead up from an open square to a columned facade, hung exclusively with the blue and gold banners of House Xar'Cha. Guards dressed in gleaming ceremonial armor, chased with gold and set with bright blue enamel, watch over those who enter the building, as well as making certain visitors do not wander into more restricted sections. A few young drow dressed in simple blue robes are always stations at the doors as well, acting as guides and making certain those arriving have or can arrange appointments with those within. Most of the minor nobility in Delmah Phor keep offices here, as well as much of the administration who deal with the day to day running of the enclave. Sornnolu Xar'Cha, the de facto head of Delmah Phor.

Xar'Cha Palace
Across the square, the largest construction in Delmah Phor is the newly built palace. It is an ornate building, enclosed by a stone and wrought-iron fence, fashioned in a spiderweb design. While it looked easy to climb, it was undoubtedly enchanted. Within the fence lies a wide strip of manicured lawn, planted with a variety of flora from both the surface world and the Underdark. A keen observer would note that each one was dangerous in some fashion. The palace itself was richly decorated with sculpture and architectural flourishes, all highlighted by dancing faerie fire of varying hues, though the blue of the ruling house was predominant. The grounds were patrolled by more House Xar'Cha guards in ceremonial armor. Young drow in blue and gold livery acted as servants and pages. No non-drow were allowed inside without an explicit invitation from a noble living within, and even then they might be denied entrance. Common drow, too, had difficulty gaining an audience here.

Temple of Lolth
The cultural center of the drow enclave was the large temple in the north west of Delmah Phor. Constructed by magic to resemble a massive stalagmite, the temple towers over the enclave. Inside, multiple levels wrap around the circular building, creating balconies to accommodate the entire drow population of Delmah Phor when they come to worship. The focus of the temple was a circular altar of black stone at the center of the ground floor. The area around the altar was offset from the rest of the main temple floor by a low half-wall. No gate or doorway passed through it, instead the altar was accessed via a steep passage that led underground. The passages opening stood directly opposite the highly decorated double doors that led into the temple itself.

Market Street
A broad street runs north to south between two gates on the eastern side of Delmah Phor. This was the center of the enclave's economy. This street was lined with shops, most of which had their owners living above, and sometimes below, their buildings. The street is often choked with stalls and wagons loaded with goods trying to move between them. A large blacksmith with an open furnace anchored the northern end of the street, whilst the southern end had more delicate goods, as well as a cafe, shaded by large, broad capped mushrooms. This market street is also where one is most likely to find non-drow living and working.

Public Gardens
The south west side of Delmah Phor was still in somewhat of a state of disrepair. Many of the buildings here were unaltered or quickly patched up. Still, it has not gone entirely untouched. A large portion of this quadrant has been cleared away for an area of parkland. It was a strange, but beautiful mix of plant life from both the surface and the Underdark, and a much safer selection than which is found in the palace gardens. Green grass mixed with soft blue lichen in an open lawn area that was dotted with pools. These were spring fed, one or two with warm water bubbling up from deep within the earth. Others harbored fish and other wildlife, from which even the poorest resident of the enclave might take a meal. High trees and oversized mushrooms created a small, but thick forest which ran along the high outer wall of Delmah Phor.

Perhaps more so than any of her siblings Sadei has always been curious about other drow. Always going out of her way to observe them at the very least, though often too shy to actually speak with them. She's certainly no Divaonar. The outgoing nature of her Mother wasn't one of the traits that she picked up.

No, this girl is rather quiet. Shy, even. Which creates an odd counter-point to her desire to get out and explore the wide world.

Her connection to house Xar'cha should be fairly clear by her bluish skin, a common feature amongst the females of the house. Though the peppery black spots in her hair are no doubt an unusual touch. She's young in appearance, though at her apparent age she would probably be considered an adult in human terms.

Elf maturation is weird like that.

Attire is rather unusually modern in appearance. And that backpack sporting an image of various arctic animals really helps to cement the mental image of a school age teen heading off to further her education.

Though she's most certainly not in school now, no. She's poking around the more public of the gardens, enjoying the flora and any animals she might be able to find amongst them.

Butterflies in particular. Hopefully there are butterflies about.

Sadei will find a few butterflies floating about some flowering bushes at the edge of the treeline. They're joined by some industrious bumble bees, collecting nectar for a hive that has taken up residence beneath the cap of an oversized mushroom. Birds sitting up in the trees sing songs to one another.

Out on the open lawn, children and families were gathered. A group of young boys was playing at fighting, using sticks as swords and holding nothing back. A mother and daughter sat on a rock overhanging one of the pools, trying to catch fish on a line. A couple, an off duty guard and her male, strolled across the grass, enjoying each other's company.

Lots of interesting people. But... kind of intimidating. The boys look way too busy. And the other girl looks like she's occupied as well. Best to stick to herself for the time being. Maybe if someone happens to stroll near?

Sadei does seem a might out of place after all. A child with no adults nearby.

Ah well.

Time to do what she does best.

Her eyes close as she takes in a slow breath and begins to sing. A haunting, reverberating, other-worldly melody with words that don't seem to be quite words. Impressions. Feelings. Sensations. Thoughts.

A strange and alien beauty.

The area around her slowly becomes more. Colors more vibrant. Aromas of flowers sweater. The drone of insect wings more harmonious. The babbling of the water like resonating crystal. The caress of the wind like chimes dancing in the breeze.

Sadei sings.

And all the world sings with her.

Ilpholin arrives, her tail swaying behind her slowly. Though known to many, she is perhaps familiar to but a few, especially with her current state. One cannot mistake her vibrant purple hair though, a trait she's always cherished. Of course, she also cannot be anything but stunning with her looks and the way she carries herself.

Alas, murmers and lust are neither of her goals today as she makes her way towards the temple that looms over all. Worship of her deity is what brought her here today.

Though she is paused by a song and turns to investigate. Or at least listen.

Sadei's song catches the attention of those nearby. Even the sparring boys stop to listen. The mother near the pool watches with suspicion. Singing in public just wasn't done. She urges her daughter to pack up to leave. The girl pouts a bit, but obeys. It seemed she liked the song, and may have come over, had her mother not been there to intervene.

The boys decide this is too weird for them. None would admit that they found the song beautiful, at least, not in front of the others. One lingers, though, while his playmates run off.

The drow couple stop and listen, the guard is wary of something so unusual, trained as she was to watch for such things. Her companion shakes his head and stands closer to her, encouraging her to just enjoy it. What harm could a child cause, afterall?

Ilpholin may very well recognize Sadei. The girl was around the Den and Raril fairly often. And like all of her siblings in humanoid form she wears one of those absurd looking backpacks.

Sadei doesn't appear to notice the attention that her song is drawing. Mostly because her attention is on the flora and fauna around her.

Flowers and leaves sway in tune to the music, dancing in the soft caress of the wind. A humming bird alights on a nearby branch to pause and listen. Butterflies, bees, and the odd flower-fly bounce and bob in the air about her as her melody drifts through the air and permeates the earth.

There's powerful magic in that song, magic bringing out the color and splendor and wonder of the beauty around her.

Absurd looking backpacks?

Whether Ilpholin recognizes Sadei or not, it becomes clear to Ilpholin that there's magic woven into that song, whether it be more of a nature thing, or a compulsion thing. Ilpholin isn't going to stick around in hopes that it's the former rather than the latter and will move on unless something occurs to make it otherwise.

The drow couple return to their walking, sharing a laugh and enjoying the now improved beauty of the gardens. The young boy slowly walks closer, an exaggerated echo of the way a scout might place his feet to quiet his steps. It wasn't quite as effective for the boy, but he was trying, not wanting to disturb Sadei and make her stop singing. He'll stop a few feet away, silently watching her.

[Streets]

Ilpholin will find herself walking through some rather narrow and rundown streets. Things were kept clean and most were in some state of renovation, but it wasn't quality work. The people who lived here in the south western quarter of Delmah Phor had a strong sense of pride for their neighborhood, but did not have the means to improve it as they would like. The drow here were more suspicious than most. They recognized her as nobility, but wondered what she was doing here without a single servant or guard. A group of young men watch her from the stoop of a building as she passes, not bothering to hide the hunger in their gaze. Further ahead, a similar group watched from a street corner. One of them laughed, grinning broadly at the draeglolth as she approached.

Neither, actually.

It isn't nature magic like that of a druid. Nor is it enchanting magic that beguiles the mind. But rather something altogether different. And something altogether lovely.

Sadei still doesn't appear to notice the attention that she's drawing. She knows on some level that her songs usually draw ears to her. She understands that her music is something many find worth enjoying. But despite this she tends to get lost in the melody.

In some cases quite literally.

Though not this time. Hasn't been singing long enough for that.

As the boy draws near he might notice that the sound of his footsteps, the sound of the grass brushing up against his feet, falls into harmony with Sadei's song. A soft percussion added to the uncanny symphony.

Reinholdt
2012-08-22, 05:26 PM
Sadei's attempted technicalities doesn't stop Ilpholin from drawing her own conclusions and leaving, just like that mother.

Though I still don't know anything about the backpacks.

[Streets]

Hmm... not quite quality work like they had back home, but practical enough. Most onlookers didn't warrant a second glance from Ilpholin. But one.

One did.

Ilpholin pauses in step to turn and face the brave man that laughed, staring directly at him. She'll say nothing, yet, though her facial features suggest a good explanation should be forthcoming.

The boy shuffles closer, subconsciously moving to the rythm of the song. That is, until he trips and falls flat on his face with a yelp of surprise.

[Streets]

The man was rather large, particularly by drow standards, and judging by his not-so-good looks, there may have been some orc blood in him, somewhere down the line. Whatever his ancestry, he was the biggest and baddest of a group of males who all considered themselves pretty big and bad, pushed to the edge of society, crowded out by the families with more money and more influence. Life had dealt them a bad hand, and when the opportinity came up for them to escape the hardships of being poor and Houseless in the Underdark, they'd come running, but the surface was not the shining paradise the nobles had promised them, and they were looking for some retribution.

The ugly brute steps out onto the street, about ten yards in front of Ilpholin, blocking her path. His friends, a half dozen in all, file out behind him. The group of five that was sitting on the steps behind her, stand and move out into the street as well, cutting off the street from the rear.

"Hey, Din, what've we got here?" A short fellow from the group behind calls.

"Looks like a noble all on her lonesome outside the palace." The big drow replies. "Whatcha doin' out here, Sweetie?" He asks Ilpholin, smirking. "Lookin' for a good time?"

The yelp is enough to snap Sadei out of her song. Though amusingly enough the boy's cry is incorporated into what could be considered a crescendoing ending the the melody. Odd the way it incorporates the sounds of the world around it..

"Oh! Umm..." she shuffles her feet nervously, unsure if she should move closer and help him up or back away. Unable to come to a decision she settles on just remaining where she is somewhat awkwardly.

Sadei finally glances around again.

Oh no! Many of the people had left! Had her song offended them somehow? That would be awful, she didn't mean to be a bother to anyone...

"Are you alright...?" she finally asks, her voice quiet and uncertain.

Somewhere down the way, a shape moved. Though checking it again, there doesn't seem to be anything there. If one were looking at just the right angle at just the right time, they might notice what seemed to be an aztec like drawing of a lion outlined on the ground and sides of buildings. One might even notice it move. But being 2-D, this particular creature was hard to sense, even for Ilpholin, and it only moves when she does.

Gotta remember to describe that thing more often.

"None of you revi'n jora could handle my good time. Step out of my way and this will be ignored." Ilpholin says, hand resting gently on her whip, face neutral.

The boy starts to pick himself up, but stops and stares, wideyed, at Sadei when she speaks to him. He was very clearly embarrassed and a bit frightened. "S..sorry." He stammers, before scrambling to his feet.

[Streets]

Din laughs, and the others quickly join in. "This ain't your palace, princess. We don't have to take no orders from you." He steps forward, pulling a short length of heavy pipe from his pocket. The other around him do the same, producing similarly makeshift weapons: Lengths of chain, planks of wood, a few carried daggers, rusted but their edges razor sharp.

The boy looks younger than she is. And... he's a bit nervous too? But why? Why would he approach her if he felt uncomfortable doing so? Plenty of things about drow culture that Sadei still doesn't understand.

That may or may not be for the best.

His own uncertainty makes Sadei feel ever so slightly less awkward. If he's nervous too then what does she have to be afraid of?

Right?

"Were you listening to my song?" she asks, tone becoming hopeful. "Did it sound alright? Oh I hope I didn't bother anyone..."

...

Wow.

That's unusually submissive for a female.

What's her problem?

Ilpholin smiles and responds quietly.
"No. My palace is filled with psychopaths that make you look like a joke. I am Ilpholin, leader of AMEN, and if you haven't learned to fear my name by now, then you will by the end of the day. Tut." She articulates at the end.

Moving to the ground below Ilpholin and purposefully becoming quite clear now is a huge lion-like creature with a black mane and two enormous pupil-less emerald-like eyes which seems to stare right at you from the ground. It looks ready to devour something. But for now it's just sitting on the ground like an extremely well made crayon drawing someone did.

"You think some half-arsed illusion's gonna scare us?" Din asked, scoffing. "Get her!" He shouts, and as one, the dozen drow charge, all looking to tear into Ilpholin with everything they had. Din was going to get there first, lining up a swing with his pipe aimed at the draeglolth's head.

Ilpholin sighs. Not because she'd have to fight. No, it'd be good practice. But that'd she'd have to fight and minimize casualties. Where's the fun in that?

She tsks and says, "Fetch," nodding at one of them as she does so, before running at the lead guy. She fully intends to jump and use his shoulders as a springboard to get out of the middle and away from being fully surrounded. She might still get smacked with the pipe if Din is able to adjust his swing well enough, though not directly on her head. A shoulder if he's particularly great, an arm if he's got skill, a leg if he's just good. If he's not even good, then he gets to wiff!

Meanwhile Tut goes to grab one of the guys not Din and pull him into 2-D space. Let him become a drawing too! Tut doesn't quite have the same restraint as Ilpholin does, so if it works he's totally going to try and nom the guy's head off too. Cause he's big comparatively once the prey gets pulled down to his level. It's quite scary really. Like a monster from your childhood days.

One would think that thugs would have realized by now that attacking random people in the Nexus often results in horrible things.

Ah well.

[Public Gardens]

Sadei smiles broadly!

It would appear that she's happy someone likes her song! "Oh I'm so glad. Some people don't like it. They think it sounds..."

She glances at where many of the garden's previous occupants had been milling about. "...strange. But I know the flowers and the wind and the animals like it. They're always happy to sing with me."

Din's pretty quick for a strong guy and adjusts his swing. The impact won't have quite the punch it may have had, but it'll still hit Ilpholin hard, and in mid air it'll be awful hard to dodge. Another drow just behind him makes a grab for her as well, trying to roughly pull her down to the street.

Tut succeeds in grabbing an unsuspecting thug. A brief question escapes his lips as he's pulled under, shortly followed by terrified screams. Two drow that had been running beside him glance back, wondering what had happened. They looked ready to bolt.

[Public Gardens]

"Well... people don't normally go around singing." The boy points out, rubbing the back of his neck. "Not out in public anyways. It's not safe. At least, that's what mother says." He didn't seem to understand it.

Sornnolu's Office

Without much in the way of ceremony, Junior walks into the office after checking his appointment with the guards as per usual.

Only this time rather than lugging some massive contraption along with him to demonstrate, all he seems to have is a small bag of odds and ends. It may not look impressive, but he appears to be as proud of this accomplishment as he is of anything else he's brought in here to show off.

"Yeh ready ta see what Ah've got lined up next?" He asks with a grin, beginning the monthly ritual once more.

"Tested em meself, live fire in a poker match 'gainst yer old man n' mine in fact. Be careful with em now." Junior reaches into the sack and pulls out a jar of clear gel that he sets down, not too concerned about its welfare. The next thing he pulls out is what appears to be a pill case, but every chamber is stuffed with cotton to pad and protect the contents from jarring movements.

"Tha capsules're highly volatile, n'when they're punctured in any way, tha crystal suspended inside's flushed out an flung at high speeds in tha direction o' tha breech. Tossing them at summin usually does it." Junior takes a heavy iron plate out of his bag and sets it on the floor, then opens up the pill case and removes one, holding it firmly between his thumb and forefinger.

He drops it to the plate in full view of Sorn's desk, and the instant it touches there's a sharp, ringing bang as the capsule explodes and a crystal embeds itself into the plate, making the entire thing jump and move to the left three inches from the force involved.

"Coul'be used n'frag explosives, or firearms. Tha capsule itself is silent when it pops, all tha noise was from tha crystal hitting tha target."

Sornnolu stands and leans over his desk, getting a better view of the damage done to the metal plate. His eyes were wide, shocked by the result, but there was a glitter in them, ideas and possibilities dancing behind. "There are many possible applications." He agrees, grinning. Junior will note a strong resemblance between Sorn and his father here, though it's doubtful he'd ever seen Raril quite so manic.

"Do you think you could work on their stability? If a common soldier is to carry them in any form, we must be certain he will not harm himself."

Slii Arhem

Sornnolu's Office

The damage appears to be localized, but quite extensive. Junior has chosen the plate thickness well so that the demonstration hasn't taken a chunk out of Sorn's floor, but the crystal shard nearly penetrated all the way through without any time to accelerate.

"Could make tha capsules thicker easy enough, but it means yeh'd need a surefire way o' setting them off. Can't jes toss em if they're more stable." Sounds simple enough. You have to be able to balance safety against usability and such.

Next he gestures to the gel, setting the pillbox down for Sorn to play with after he leaves. He understands his boss' need to destress with some nice pointless violence and destruction now and then, so the demonstration toys are always left for him to do with as he pleases.

"This's more utility than combat, but it's still crazy useful if yeh're inventive enough. Spread it over summin and it gets lighter. Tha more surface area it's spread on, tha lighter it gets, so when it's condensed inna jar like this it won't float in tha air er nuthin. Dries on clear like shellac, but yeh can scrape it off if yeh need to. Doesn' effect mass either, so if yeh put it on a weapon she'll swing faster an still hit as hard." Okay, maybe he lied about it having fewer combat uses, but he considers this a golden achievement on its own. Cover armor, weapons, and gear in a layer of this and the people carrying it will thank you over twice after their first march lugging it all around at the new weight.

Singing in public...

Isn't safe?

But father sings all the time! Okay, well. Not all the time. But he sings pretty commonly at the Den. Especially when she pesters him to do so. Which is pretty much every chance Sadei gets. Few things make her more happy than hearing Raril sing.

The girl wrinkles her nose a bit.

"Why wouldn't singing be safe? That sounds silly."

It IS silly! How could such a harmless thing be dangerous?

That's almost as absurd as killer stuffed animals.

"The use in armor crafting alone would be tremendous." Sornnolu marvels. "Could you produce a significant quantity for our armorers to use? If applied to our heaviest armors, it would allow our soldiers to be more maneuverable." He requests. "The faster the better, of course."

"Also, I have something I would like you to look at." The drow reaches into his robes and draws out an ornately crafted flintlock pistol, designed to look like a dragon spewing flames. "Could you build me another of these, or perhaps a few? Nothing so ornate, of course, just a working model. And I would prefer it if you did not damage this one in the process. I am rather fond of it." Sornnolu had a soft spot for dragons. "I believe it may be an ideal delivery system for those capsules of yours. As well as other varied effects." He wanted to experiment with them himself, from the arcane side of things.

Junior studies the gun as he goes over the requests in his head, "Well, tha problem with makin a ton o' tha gel s'that it tends ta fly up'n stick to tha ceiling when it's done. Still, Ah kin make it if yeh get me some 'elp ta scrape it off n'bottle it. As fer tha guns, they'd need summin that hit tha capsule itself, rather'n strikes a pan on tha outside like this. Ah could design summin that looks like em, but will fire tha capsules, but yeh're gunna have ta hire a proper blacksmith ta make it sturdy. Course, Ah could always grow em outta those crystals instead if yeh think that'd be best." Junior is refering to the crystals he made his hat liner out of, and that he was originally contracted to make the drow scimitars and other weapons from because of its momentum increasing properties. Those properties wouldn't really help a gun much unless it was used as a club, but the crystals are at least as strong as steel and Junior has been growing a surplus of them to use in all kinds of projects now that he has the proper facilities.

"Ah won't need ta touch yer one, if Ah'm makin them from scratch." He waves off Sorn's concerns about the destruction of his own weapon.

Well...

At least it doesn't unless she sings That Song.

But she doesn't like That Song at all. It sounds terrible and cruel and it makes her feel bad and icky when she sings it. And no one else seems very fond of it either. Probably because of the brain melting.

No one likes their brains melted.

"Well... I don't want to get in trouble..." getting in trouble is pretty terrible. And if she got in trouble here she's sure that father would be upset with her. And that would be the worst possible thing!

The drow girl's mood lifts ever so slightly when one of the flitting butterflies lands on her, as if encouraging her to continue the song. Sadly she probably shouldn't... "Oh. Umm... I'm Sadei Xar'cha. Who are you?"

"If you take that to personel, they will arrange everything."

The boy blinks a bit, then drops his eyes, staring at his toes. "I am called Rhylaxle Auvryana, Mistress." He says quietly, respectfully. His entire demeanor has changed to one of submissive respect.

"Very astute." Sornnolu confirms, as he reaches out to tap a strange crystaline object on his desk. A slight buzzing fills the air as he does so. "She has given me a request that I cannot refuse her, nor can I fulfill it, without jeopardizing everything we have built here." He sits back in his chair and sighs, shoulders sagging under the weight of this problem. "She has asked us to provide a living sacrifice to the Spider Queen, in order to honor her arrival here, and to cement Delmah Phor's position as a healthy and devoted Drow population. However, you and I both know that the local powers that be would frown upon such a display and, I am loathe to admit, they have enough strength to wipe us off the map and send us running back into the Underdark."

Does the matron want a particular breed of sacrifice, or are we going with whatever is convenient?"

He doesn't like this. He's never used his power as a law enforcer for something bad, even when he had every chance to. In fact, he'd punished one of his own men for trying to extort from a grocery store for protection money. Now he was being asked to kill someone. But... it was for Lolth's blessing. Sadei... sort of... leans off to one side a bit, trying to follow the boy's eyes as he becomes all the more submissive in his expression. Wow, his toes must be really interesting to be staring at them so hard!

"Why are you..." it takes a few moments for the reason to click in her head. "Oh! That must have been what father was talking about..."

A flashback to Sadei asking about Raril's side of the family. There were lots of words and uncomfortableness and the distinct feeling that she wasn't getting the whole picture. Something about Nobility? But there were birds singing outside so she sort of missed some of it.

"Umm... Mother says that respect should earned through action. Not something a person should except because of their power or their name," she offers a rather lame smile. "So... umm... you can just call me Sadei if you like? I don't think I've done anything worthy of being called 'Mistress' by anyone."

...

To be fair Sadei isn't even terribly fond of spiders. They have their own form of beauty, sure. In a weird, hairy, crawly, souless-eyed sort of way. But there are plenty of other animals that she likes more. Mostly the flying ones. Flying animals have always intrigued her.

The chimeras fly mostly through a combination of ignoring gravity and bending inertia. Animals that can fly without mucking about with physical law are neat!

"I do not need to tell you not to get caught. If you are, I'll deny everything and tell Remnant and the Council you acted on your own." The drow shrugs. Kelral should know it's nothing personal, simply a fact of business. Delmah Phor was Sornnolu's pet project, and he wouldn't risk it, even if it meant sacrificing someone. "So I think it would be best if you stayed out of sight as much as possible. There are tunnels beneath the temple the priestesses use to enter the sacred space. They connect to Underside.

[Streets]

Her left shoulder gets hit with a sickening crunch then. This is followed up with a sickening crack as her right hand flicks midair after springing off Din and the thug reaching out to grab her might find his hand sliced off by a razor sharp whip.

If the thug loses his hand before accomplishing his goal then Ilpholin will finish her leap-spring, tucking and rolling on the ground with a grunt as her shoulder takes the brunt. She'll end up in a crouch, but her balance is clearly off for the moment based on that not particularly spectacular landing.

Tut just goes for the next nearest thug, trying the same thing. Guess he's hungry tonight.

The strike from the whip gets the thug to pull his hand back, and it's clearly bleeding. Ilpholin makes her landing. The drow near her would try to attack, but they've been distracted by the screams as another of their number is dragged into the ground. More concerned with saving their own skins than some petty grudge, the thugs near Tut, and subsequently Ilpholin, turn and run.

Din whirls, roaring in anger. "Where do you filthy rats think you're going?! Get her!" He charges at Ilpholin again, oblivious to the danger of Tut. The drow that are now behind him still follow, but not as enthusiastically as before. They'd seen the others get dragged under and were not eager to join them.

Shelob's Den

Tucked away to the north of the city, tucked behind the theatre and next to the slums, looking over the temple grounds, is a long, narrow building. From the outside, it's rather unassuming. Brick walls make up its length, reaching two stories tall. There are no windows, save a picture window at the top story's front entrance. The front door is painted a rich, vibrant purple, and has an armed, female, half-orc, half-drow bouncer in fine silver armour set with amethysts. Above the door, a sign painted with paint luminescent only to Darkvision proclaims this establishment to be Shelob's Den in lettering heavily stylized to resemble a spider web.

Those let through the door by the bouncer will enter a small antechamber. There are two doors on the opposite wall. One is a pair of heavy double doors, all gold and lavender. The other is narrow, tucked against the corner and painted the same dark purple as the wall. A discrete plaque just below eye-level warns that only staff were allowed past this door. A well-groomed, young male drow sits behind a desk, exchanging hand-stamps for a modest entry fee. Another stands with his hands tucked together behind his back, waiting to open the doors for paying customers.

The main room is much more elaborate, taking two floors at ground level and another below. In the centre of the room is a circular dias, raised up off the ground several metres. Standing on the platform is a male drow, barely an adult, with long white hair and wearing a well-fitted tuxedo. He stands with his hands clasped together at his chest with his eyes closed, swaying slightly as he sings to the company of a hidden piano.

"I'm feeling mighty lonesome
Haven't slept a wink
I walk the floor and watch the door
And in between I drink

Black coffee
Love's a hand me down brew
I'll never know a Sunday
In this weekday room"

The door opens onto a platform, carpeted in a rich, amethyst shag. At the centre, it has a set of stairs that lead to a dining floor. To the left is a sloping walk-way that runs down to the far wall, with stairs letting a patron get to empty tables that might be awkward to reach from the front of the building. The right leads to a balcony with leather chairs and small round tables along the a silver rail decorated with gilded spider-webs. Pressed against the wall is a bar stocked with only the best local and imported wines and spirits.

"I'm talking to the shadows
One o'clock to Four
And Lolth, how slow the moments go
When all I do is pour

Black coffee
Since the blues caught my eye
I'm hanging out on Monday
My Sunday dream's too dry"

The dining floor, set a floor down, runs most of the length of the building. Each circular table has four chairs around it, but obtaining an unused chair from another table is not unheard of. Male drow in outfits that tempt the imagination move from table to table, delivering drinks, taking orders and making sure in hushed voices that the patrons are enjoying themselves. The floor below them is black marble, glittering with amethyst dust.

"Now a lady is born to go a lovin'
A man is born to weep and fret
To stay at home and tend his oven
And drown his past misdeeds
In coffee and fireweed

I'm moody all the morning
Mourning all the night
And in between it's nicotine
And not much hard to fight"

The main feature of the room, however, is the stage set along the far wall. For now, the rich velvet curtain covers the stage from the sight of the patrons. Behind it, dancers, singers and stage-hands hurry to set up for the next performance.

"Black coffee
Feelin' low as the ground
It's driving me crazy, just waiting for my lady
To maybe come around

My nerves have gone to pieces
My hair is turning gray
All I do is drink black coffee
Since my lady's gone away"

The young drow opens his eyes and smiles shyly as he reaches the end of his song. A moment passes, and the patrons set down their drinks to regal him in polite applause.

Shelob's Den is more than the crass lady's clubs that can be so easily found in the near-by slums. It used to be, once, but under the direction of the enigmatic Alorhna Tam'Rinos it has become a classy establishment. Patrons are expected to keep their hands off the staff, and the private rooms have been repurposed. Now it is a watering hole for the well-to-do and better-off. Not necessarily nobility, but none of the hooting under-class.

Tut finds his next meal, though this drow struggles, screaming a string of curses as he's pulled under. The drow behind Ilpholin turn and flee. A few ahead of her hesitate, backing away. The rest are caught in the arc of her whip, spasming and collapsing to the ground. All except for Din. The orc-blooded drow was more resilient than the rest. He lets out a mighty shout and rounds on Ilpholin, his length of pipe raised.

[Public Gardens]

"My grandmother says family are the only people you can rely on. No one else." Young Rhylaxle explains.

From within the forest comes the sound of someone moving through the underbrush. Their movements are careful, but they aren't concerned with being heard, either. Soon, a drowess in a short blue dress and high golden sandals emerges from the forest. She pauses at the edge, looking around. Upon spotting Sadei and Rhylaxle, she makes her way over. Rhylaxle bows to her respectfully. "Greetings, Mother."

"Hello, my son." She says, a hint of a smile on her face. "Who is your companion?" She asks, nodding to Sadei.

"This is... I mean... May I introduce Lady Sadei Xar'Cha." Rhylaxle stumbles a bit over the formal introduction. "Lady Sadei, may I present my mother, Felyn'wae Auvryana."

If any drow besides Din decides to stick around by this point, Tut will go after one of them as well. Otherwise, he'll content himself on gnawing on the bones of the bodies he's got.

Ilpholin for her part, stands up at the last moment from her crouch so that the iron pipe hits her hard in the arm rather than the head. Crunch. There goes her other arm. Not using the whip now.
"Mmm... I like you. I think I'm going to keep you." Ilpholin says before shooting out a quick web from her mouth at Din's face.

[House Aleth warehouse]

The warehouse was quiet at this time of the day. The last of the morning deliveries had been sent out and the afternoon exports had yet to arrive. This meant that the workers could relax, gamble, and talk the things that all blue collar laborers talk about; their families, hopes for the future, and the most recent games at the amphitheater. One of them told an off color joke about the priestesses that sent the rest of the workers into peels of terrified laughter.

They were laughing so hard in fact, that they did not notice when the door to the office overlooking the main warehouse floor opened. They did not notice the lithe, leonine elf walking down the stairs towards them. In fact, they did not notice him at until he was standing in their midst.

“I’ve heard that one before.” The newcomer said. His voice was a stark contrast to his physical appearance. It was reedy, and somewhat whiny; it reminded one of the insects that buzzed around in swamps. “Only, in the one I heard, she finds the matron poisoned after the main course.”

Any remaining laughter was immediately hushed as the elf spoke. The workers who had been sitting on the floor and playing dice games quickly stood and tried to hide the evidence of their game. The newcomer shook his head. “I’m not trying to break up any of your little games. I just need to see Nal in the office.”

There was a deathly silence amongst the workers now. One of them, the one called Nal apparently, stepped forward. “You…wanted to see me Lord Asim'hrae?”

“Yes, nothing major. It just seems like there’s a minor discrepancy in the cargo manifests you’ve handed in. I’d like to confirm it with you before I send the invoice back to our customers.” Asim sighed. “You know how they can be, if it’s not one thing it’s the other.”

Nal did not look like he knew how ‘they’ could be. In fact it looked like he was judging his odds of making it outside before he was caught. He apparently didn’t like his odds, as he simply swallowed and nodded. “Yes my lord.”

Asim smiled at the elf, patting his back and gestured for the worker ahead to of him. Nal looked back one last time, terror etched on his face before walking forward. None of the other workers caught his eye. Asim did not seem to see this and asked Nal a question. “Do you have a family?”

“No my lord.”

“No relatives at all?”

“None living my lord…”

“That’s quite a shame.” Asim said. “I have always believed that family is the most important thing in this world.” They reached the top of the stairs and Nal stared at the door to the office as if it were a portal to hell. The worker swallowed in a dry throat and opened the door.

The office was a basic one; a simple wooden desk and chair. Whatever monster Nal had been expecting to see wasn’t there. He relaxed slightly and took a deep breath as he stepped over the threshold. It would be the last breath he ever took in this building. Before his eyes, the room warped, becoming fuzzy and filling with fog. Before Nal could make a move to save himself Asim shoved him in, slamming the door shut. The door shook once as if someone was pounding on it from the other side. After a second, all sounds from the door stopped. Asim sighed and turned his attention back down to the remaining workers. They had been watching the scene unfold with ever growing horror.

“Anyone who steals from the warehouse again will be sent to the elemental plane of fire. Is that quite understood?” Asim asked.

The workers nodded their assent, quickly getting back to work. Break time was over for today. Asim smiled to himself and went back into his now completely normal office.

[House Aleth]

Matron Inala of House Aleth was not ashamed to admit she was getting up there in years. She had just passed her 180th birthday in fine style, and knew she was not getting any younger. She used this as a subtle advantage when negotiating with other houses. They knew that she had survived at least three assassination attempts, maybe more, and had always come out on top. She smiled as she thought of how she had put down each of those attempts in turn. She stood up from her desk, stretching her arms and decided she would take a bit of a walk.

She was not unattractive by any stretch of the word. She was tall, even for a drow, and she carried the height well. And while gravity was slowly gaining ground, she had not lost that battle yet, and still held her head high when walking. The only thing about her that suggested age was her face. It was lined slightly, and her eyes told of a maturity and of an experience not often found in younger elves. This aspect in particular seemed to attract younger males she had noticed. Some nights she would go out and pick a specific one to string along. She would toy with him for a few hours, then either abandon him or take him home with her depending on how much of a show he put on. She nearly always abandoned them.

She rounded a corner, lost in these thoughts when she came to the memorial room. She stopped, staring at the door that led to the monuments honoring her three dearly departed husbands. What strange quirk of fate had brought her here of all places? She studied the door, memories coming to the forefront of her mind unbidden and unwelcome. She couldn’t afford such sentimentality now. In a few days maybe, after she had hammered out the latest contract, but not now. She walked briskly away, her mind firmly on more important matters and wiping away a tear that had formed in the corner of her eye. The servants didn’t often dust down here. She would have to remind them.

As he did this, he felt the workers eyes on his back. Let them stare. After today’s performance, he doubted if any of them would have the courage to put a knife in his back. He left the warehouse with those cheerful thoughts still in his head. Deciding he would go someplace different today he headed north and then east making his way quickly through the streets. It was safer for males walk openly here but still. He wanted to avoid dirty looks.

After getting lost only once, he eventually found what he was looking for. The building that had caused quite the stir amongst his servants and the one he had (at the time) expressed nothing but disdain for. Shelob's Den. He spots the boncer and makes his way over to her. He bows in the way he was taught: Formally, but to one below his station.

“Good afternoon. May I go in?”

And they are pretty enjoyable!

She doesn't mention that she was singing. Since apparently singing in public is bad for some reason that she still can't understand.

"My father is Raril! He says that I'm very good at singing."

Sadei is quite proud of this face! She beams with pride just bringing it up.

As night falls over Delmah Phor, guests begin to arrive at the front gates of the Palace of House Xabaresh Chaeron. Gilded carriages pulled by giant Underdark lizards clattered through the square. Servants in blue and gold livery attended to those disembarking, leading them down the faerie fire lit path to the Palace itself. Guards in gleaming armor stood in formation along the path. Out in the square, they marched for the entire enclave to see.

It was a night for celebration. Matron Danube Xar'Cha had arrived in the Nexus and was making her grand debut. The nobility in Delmah Phor were out in style, doing all they could to catch the Matron's eye and earn her favor. Prominent members of Inside society had been invited as well, to enjoy every splendor and hospitality that House Xar'Cha had to offer.

The common people of Delmah Phor reveled in the streets. The broad avenue of the Market Street was packed with stalls selling food and drink and colorful baubles. It was also packed with people, eating, drinking, and shopping. Music filled the air, provided by a band performing near the café.

Inside the Palace, guests gathered in the immense ballroom. The floor was gleaming blue marble, inlaid with a gold spiderweb pattern. At the center of the web sat the spider of House Xar'Cha, worked in gold and sapphire. Soaring columns resembling stalagmites supported the ceiling. High above, gossamer webs of gold stretched between them, dotted with glittering jeweled spiders.

Frescoes depicting scenes of the Underdark adorned the walls. The east wall was a triptych depicting the Drow's descent from the surface, following the will of the Spider Queen; the discovery of Menzoberranzan; and the founding of House Xar'Cha, showing the stalagmite tower the House called home. The west wall displayed images of drow rediscovering the Surface, trade caravans carrying the wealth of both the Surface and the Underdark, and the founding of Delmah Phor. Each image was framed in living stone, carved to resemble the fantastical flora and fauna of the Underdark. Above the carved double doors that led into the ballroom from the north was an image of a giant Underdark dragon battling an armored drowess.

Above, the ceiling was another web of gold and blue marble, culminating in a great dome of cobalt glass. Hanging from the center of the dome was an enormous spider, encrusted with sapphires, its legs spread wide. From its claws dangled a bowl shaped web with delicate alabaster panes which flood the room with golden light.

The southern side of the ballroom was dominated by a raised dais. Atop it sat another rendition of a massive spider. This one was carved from a darker blue stone, nearly black, and encrusted with blue diamonds. Its eyes were large round star sapphires, their shine making it seem as if the spider was watching you. Atop the spider's thorax, appearing as a gilded crown, was a plush cushion of blue silk. Any who sat there might appear as a mock drider, or an echo of the Spider Queen herself. Reinforcing this image, the south wall was a massive image if Lolth in all of her glory, ruling in the Demonweb pits, surrounded by her handmaidens and worshipping drow.

Between the columns and the walls, round tables were set, where guests could gather and eat. The tablecloths bore yet another rendition of the House symbol. Long tables were laden with Underdark delicacies. Servers in blue and gold livery circulated through the room, carrying trays of drinks and hors d'oeuvres. The center of the ballroom was left clear for dancing, and the sound of music filled the room, either through magical means or from an unseen orchestra.

Tebtranlyn Xar'Cha was not a happy drow.

He was suppose to be an assassin. A blade in the night. An unexplainable death. A shadow in the corner of your eye that you could never catch. And here he was as 'extra security' for the party or as he thought of it 'mandatory party attender'.

There were enough guards as it was, seen and unseen, and only the stupid, foolish, or truly desperate would try to do anything that would bring harm to anyone at the party. Oh, there were plenty of dangers to be sure but only the dangers of politics and etiquette, not the dangers of poison and daggers. That was what after the party was for, Death. That was what Tebtranlyn lived for.

It was his own fault that he was here as extra security though. His special set of skills had not been in high demand as of late and he had grown bored. Then he had mentioned how bored he was in passing to some aunt or uncle of his and suddenly here he was. Without his Piwafwi cloak to help him blend with the shadows, without his bow to kill his enemies from beyond their reach, without his armor to protect from the strike of a sword, he felt naked.

So, here he was, pacing among the nobles of various houses and outsiders, having to force himself not to scowl, and to talk politely with all those around. On the bright side he was no longer bored. Now he was just annoyed.

Normally, for a recon mission like this, Jane Doe would not be in the open like this. She wouldn't be wearing this black sleeveless dress, and she'd be armed with more than the few combat augmentations that she had with her. She'd be cloaked, on the rooftops, deploying recon nanodrones, and finding her target.

But she had her orders. She was to act both as scout and as MURDER'S representative to the Xar'Cha Matron. She is here alone, and (for once) unarmed. She is looking at her surroundings, memorizing security positions and making little effort to socialize.

The pair had simply arrived. How and when is rather difficult to say. But they arrived none the less.

The fellow accompanying her is quite the looker himself, clad in a deceptively simple dress suit. The are of a strange orangish metal that seems to crackle like crystallized flame. It shifts to polished bone before igniting again, constantly cycling back and forth.

Zee is fiddling with her dress quite a bit...

The fellow with her leans sideways and mutters, "Stop fidgeting, K'rax. You look fine."

"Scrunching into humanoid shape is bothersome enough without wearing a dress on top of everything else," she mutters back.

Ilpholin arrives riding atop Mister Squiggles. She's wearing a dress made from sheer blue spider silk. It was a one shouldered number, the layers of fabric wrapped and rouched in a way that they would not reveal too much of the skin beneath, but certainly enough to tease. The hemline was asymetrical, falling to below the knee on one side, but rising to daringly high slit on the other, which would only be made visible as Ilpholin moved. The shoulder of the dress was held together by a golden pin in the shape of a spider. Its eyes and abdomen glittered with sapphires. More sheer fabric trailed down from the shoulder to a delicate gold cuff, fashioned after a spider web, which would cover the back of the hand, ending in a ring bearing another, smaller, gold spider. It's abdomen was fashioned from a single large star sapphire. Particularly perceptive personages would discover that the folds of the dress hid numerous concealed pockets, cleverly sewn.

Mister Squiggles alas does not get quite as much detail in his dressing of choice, because he is a spider. And it is very difficult to get dressed up as a spider. He has on a black and white tux with a red bowtie.

Walking aside them should be Din, dressed up however Art chooses, though Ilpholin would have forced to dress up for certain. He is clearly not an equal and could be considered a bit of a chauffeur and bodyguard in one, even if he's not allowed weapons. Seemed to do fine with improvised weapons last time.

Left a little ways away from the palace itself is Tut, the living lion mural, who was told to stay behind a bit, lest the guards get all antsy about him.

Once they arrive, Ilpholin will get off of Mister Squiggles' back to better mingle.

Our favorite cyborg steps out, clad in a stupidly expensive suit, as is usual when gracing these sorts of events with his presence. It's just a simple dark gray this time, with purple tie and matching black undershirt. None of that Twoface-inspired nonsense this time around, apparently.

Vyrn's own attire is something more along the lines of a particularly fancy military dress uniform, in black and dark navy colors. Adorning the chest around where one would expect a mark of rank is an emblem similar to Remnant's, with color-changes as appropriate for the Irregulars.

He does not seem particularly worried about things, contrary to the lack of bodyguards and his formerly-infamous paranoia. It's not as if this kind of party is alien to him, either, with his noble heritage, though it has certainly been a while. Actual goblin soldiers might show up at the party - if the Boss of Underside Colony is invited - and that would make for an awkward situation given Dipsnig's dishonorable discharge from the Dragonbone Colony military.

Instead, Dipsnig is wearing a long, loose sleeveless tunic in the color of dark blue, with a checkered pattern, resembling a quilt. Underneath it he's wearing a dark grey shirt with silver thread along the sleeves. His trousers are dark grey and, like the shirt and tunic, they're also a little baggy. A short while after Dipsnig enters, so does Goldbaka Flatnose, the Big Boss of the Underside Colony of goblins.

Goldbaka is a rather large goblin lady, both tall and wide. Her skin is dark grey and her eyes are dark red. She's got large ears and contrary to her family name, her nose is anything but flat - it's big and rather bulbous. Her hair is black and tied back in an official-looking bun.

As for her clothes, she's dressed in a spacious dark green dress - which seems to be designed to make her seem even bigger - with a wide, jewel-encrusted collar. The puffy sleeves are lined with black thread and tiny crystals.

Accompanying her is a skinny male goblin in a curious-looking miltary uniform. His skin is also grey, but much paler and his eyes are pale yellow. He has no hair on his head. The uniform he is wearing is dark grey, wide at the shoulders, with big epaulets and lots of buttons. It is fairly simple in design otherwise.

Tobias Vulpan, Commander of HALO, and his wife appear as close to the front entrance as any teleportation wards allow, walking the rest of the distance.

Oooh. Quinn. This would be an interesting night after all. Ilph-

Ori, the previously mentioned wife, does, in fact, appear next to Toby!

Oops. Wrong Tobias. Well guess that saved the party.
Looking around, Ilpholin chooses a more interesting prey to talk to.

Tebtranlyn Xar'Cha was not a happy drow.
Ilpholin would just have to cheer him up! Grinning she steps over. "Why Teb. It's been so long." Of course, last time Tebtranlyn saw Ilpholin, Ilph was still a nymph and not the true Draegloth she is today.

"You seem to have caught me at a disadvantage, ma'am. My name's plastered shamelessly on every tabloid that will have it, but I'm afraid I can't quite recall yours..."

Oh, goody, it was his uncle Raril's bastard daughter turned full 'true' drow. Teb scowled for a second but soon erased it with a smooth line of a mouth as he turned to face Ilpholin.

" Oh, Ilpholin, my dear cousin, I almost didn't recognize you. " 'But your annoying voice gave it away' He only thought the last part. " You look well. I see what I've heard about you was true. And look who else is here. One Mister Kirk Locke is standing casually a short ways away from the entrance. If you look closely, he's wearing a different suit. This one a bit less casual than his usual, as much as a suit can be casual that is. It looks expensive. His hat is, of course, his usual wide brimmed SRV hat.

It would take someone that knows him very well to notice, but the drow is actually a bit ill at ease. There are a lot of unfamiliar drow here, and old habits die hard. For the moment, he contents himself with waiting for him date to arrive.

Kirk might be surprised to find a slender arm suddenly entwined with one of his. Though it's not the one he was expecting - it's a deep purple, for starters. A pair of crimson eyes find his face, and a sultry smile bears genuine good will. This woman isn't there to slip a knife in his side at least.

Her dress is a slim, honeysuckle-colored white and gold affair. It only covers the important parts of her upper body - a challenge in itself, with her generous curves - and leaves one leg bare to the hip. Long white hair matches the color of her clothes, actual honeysuckle braided into rings around it.

A somewhat thick, dark veil covers her face, hung from a jeweled headress. Her voice is a little deep, if somewhat familiar. "Someone stand you up, handsome?"

The drow puts on a calculatedly inviting smile "I wouldn't stay stood up just yet. But you're welcome to keep me company in the meantime." There's something about that voice, but he can't place it. "We must never have met, because I'm sure I would remember someone as lovely as you."

Ugh. Mingling. Delisle hated this sort of thing. There was a reason her career path had been involved mostly in paperwork. She just simply wasn't good with people.

"Vyrn, who should we speak to first?" They both had gotten subvocal communicators implanted just behind the ear - easily removable after the event - to allow for just this sort of communication. "Probably not Ilpholin, after the events of the last council meeting." If she weren't thinking of the political aspects of everything, she probably would have chosen Ilpholin, simply because it was someone she'd conversed with before, however briefly.

It's alright Delisle. Ilpholin's decided not to talk to the Councilors either for the most part. Which is unfortunate really since it seems Sorn only invited them. How droll. How boring. And goblins too! They had their uses admittedly, but at a party for the Matron herself? Thin ice Sorn. But not Ilpholin's concern at least.

Unfortunately it leaves little to do. She forgot how boring Teb actually was. Now Kirk... Kirk would be so much fun. But... Darcy did sort of make Ilph swear off her Kirk plans. Probably would be too much temptation to enact them anyways if she went with him. Lots of interesting looking plus ones, but all attached to one of the formerly discussed in some way or another.

Well, process of elimination left two real choices. Wallflower Jane Doe or... well there's a pair of drow Ilpholin doesn't think she's met. Seems worth a look. Might be interesting.

The mushroom wine is served to Asim by a drow male in a black vest over a white dress shirt, who seems to be only slightly older than the other males who work here. The wine itself is quite fine. Someone of Asim's stature has no doubt had better, but this is far from sub-standard.

Behind him, the young singer on the podium moves on to a new song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsgcXZzu6io) and the invisible piano is joined by an equally invisible stringed instrument of some sort.

"Asim'hrea, House Aleth, am I correct?" A voice asks from his right. Alorhna Tam'Rinos stands there, leaning on a narrow black cane with both hands. She regards Asim through half-moon glasses, long white hair cascading down her back. Her pointed ears poke out under the brim of a tall, amethyst-coloured hat that matches the colour of her suit's jacket exactly. "It's not very often that we get lone, male visitors."

Asim stands and smiles at the drow, bowing gracefully and low.

"I would guess not. And you are in fact, correct my lady. I am at your service. I had heard about your...establishment and wanted to investigate it for myself."

The two heads of House Aleth, had been at the party for quite sometime already. The Lady Inala is wearing a long and (for a Drow Matron) extremely modest grey blue dress decorated with silvery stars. The effect draws attention to her elaborately done up hair. It's many tiers and waves make it resemble a water feature. She is speaking in a furious private conference with her son, the Lord Asim'hrae.

"Remember...you need to get Sornnolu's ear privately. Away from that priestess." She whispers furiously as her son walks away from her.

"Yes mother, I understand..." Asim says, sighing. "I'm not a child anymore." He sighs, and walks towards the host of the party, waiting a respectful distance away, trying to catch Sornnolu's eye.

Inala for her part, wanders out into the foyer to look over the some of the new guests, perhaps talk to the cyborg. If she got a deal with him worked out...She spies him right away, apparently engrossed in conversation with a goblin. She sneers slightly, but quickly manages to return her facial position to a benign neutral position as she approaches the group.

The drow sweeps his arm in front of them, gesturing to the architecture and decor. "Well, the first dozen times you see it at least."

Xar'Cha Palace

Ilpholin heads over to Alorhna and Izzy and gives a slight bow in greeting upon arrival. "Why hello there. I don't believe we've met. I'm Ilpholin Xar'cha. And you?"

Alorhna smiles at Izzy's none-too-subtle brag, but whatever dry remark she had to make on it is lost when she crosses the threshold into the palace and sets eyes on all its finery. Her lips remain slightly parted, a last vestige of that unspoken retort, as her violet eyes drift from fresco to fresco. Why didn't she have any frescos in her club? She was going to have to rectify that some day. Perhaps soon. Not the elaborate lore and historical scenes depicted, though. Landscapes, perhaps?
"Very impressive. As befits the matron, of course. I do wonder who-"

But before she can finish her thought, Alorhna falls silent when she spots Ilpholin approaching. She returns the purple-haired Xar'Cha's bow with a much deeper one of her own.
"Alorhna Tam'Rinos, proprietor and director of Shelob's Den. I don't believe I've seen you there."

"Good evening."

Lord Magtok nods, trying his best not to fidget uncomfortably at the mention of pointless sophistry. Clearly these goblins are not his kind of people; only a complete idiot would ever dare imply otherwise.

Oh look, a drow noblewoman. No idea if this will prove any better or worse than getting trapped in the hideous vacuum of Boss Bignose and Captain Not Very Pretty Either, but Magtok gives her a nod of acknowledgement anyways. Seems like everyone and their mother is trying to get something out of him tonight, whether it be a confession of goblin heritage, a business dealing, or some other third thing he can't even begin to imagine.

"And a pleasant one to you as well, ma'am."

Samona gives the drowess an appraising look when she draws attention to herself. She has had limited experience with drow in the past, even when Durin attached himself to her's and Ramiro's little enterprise. The man doesn't talk about his past. So it's with interest that Samona observes this newcomer.

The two goblins turn towards the newcomers as well, with a nod. Goldbaka appraises her with a shrewd eye, as if seeing through the drow's pretend politeness. She's as cunning as any drow matron.

"I would hope not." Kirk says with a chuckle. "No, I don't think anyone around here knows what House I came from. I like it that way. Gives an air of mystery, you know?"

"Mm. Cute. Just remember," the woman begins, right before she stretches up to put her lips at Kirk's ear. "I know you've been away awhile, but drow don't much like mysteries." That said, she lowers herself back down and glances over the other guests. "Shall we?"

Meanwhile...

Rather than some primitive carriage, a strange vehicle descends from the sky. It remains well outside the palace gates, landing only long enough to deposit a single guest. A pair of faceless guards clad in black armor wait on the ramp to see their charge safely arrive before ascending into the night.

A tall, slim lady called Naitiri enters the ballroom, passing her invitation to someone with a nod. She's borrowed her little sister's look for the evening - skin as swirling liquid metal, whisps of gold and platinum, with eyes that gleam like orange jewels. Nait's hair, while done short, glimmers with strands of gold or crimson, and it dances like fire whenever she turns her head.

Her clothes seem to be based around one idea - showing off those magnificent augments. The dress itself seems to be made of metal, and it's coiled steel skirt trails from her waist all the way to the ground behind her. Her midriff and shoulders are left bare, while her chest is covered by a three metal rings, none of which actually seem to touch her skin. They just hover around her body. Her glowspine - quite literally a bioluminescent spinal cord beneath the skin - is mounted with a metal component, and eight spindly mechanical arms make spidery patterns from her back. They don't seem to be motionless, however - they'll reach out and take drinks for her, move to avoid catching on other guests, things like that.

Nait does one final check of herself before entering the crowd. She has one goal in mind, to start with - greet the host, thank them for their hospitality, and perhaps discuss their future with Elexxion. Now if only she knew where to find the Matron or one of her representatives... All these drow look so much alike.

Ugh.

In Teb's mind it was barely worth it.

But orders where orders so he walked up towards Delisle. "Greetings, I am Tebtranlyn Xar'Cha. Enjoying yourselves?"

Alorhna returns the bow by inclining her head quite deeply, as owner of the establishment to an esteemed guest.
"Please, sit," she says, lifting her free hand to the row of stools and then takes one herself. From the other side of the counter, the bar tender (in what could be considered a stunning act of familiarity) nods at Alorhna and pours her a flute of blackberry wine. Grasping the glass with three strong fingers by its delicate stem, the madam examines Amis with a scrutinizing gaze. Reaching up with one hand, she lightly adjusts the rim of her half-moon glasses to better view Amis over it. "So, Sir Amis, how goes your investigation? All positive, I hope?"

"So far, so good." Amis replies, craning his neck to look out over the dining floor before returning his gaze to the hostess and taking a seat. You can NEVER have too many people guarding the buffet table. Never know when a band of wildebeests might come rampaging in and eat all the baby tomatoes.

Zee offers her usual grin to the over-sized spider.

"Ah, hello then! You're Ilpholin's friend aren't you?" she isn't sure if the spider can understand her or not. But it is certainly worth a try! One never knows with the Nexus.

Meanwhile!

Mister G, meanwhile, begins to make his rounds through chamber. He takes note of each guest, studying their mannerisms and gestures. Peeeeeeering.

"I would like that very much." Sornnolu says to Naitiri, clearly interested in her proposition.

"Neutralist Organization?" There's a hint of a laugh in Felyn'wae's voice. She seemed to find the idea of it somewhat absurd. "How can you influence anything while remaining neutral? Surely you must take a stand at some point!"

Felyn'wae smirks at Asim. "You are drow, are you not? A son of a noble House? It is your right to be here, at the appearance of a Matron of one of the greatest Houses in Menzoberranzan."

Those near the buffet tables will see that they are loaded with many tasty dishes from the Underdark. Some are simple snack sized items, while others were more elaborate, such as the massive Diatryma Bird cooked in its own plumage and huge haunches of roasted Rothe. Mushrooms of all sorts were on display, cooked into soups, stuffed and roasted. Pale and eyeless cave fish were baked in salt. Albino lobsters were grilled and split and served on a bed of lichen. Starchy root vegetables were diced and baked, some were mashed and heavily seasoned. Flatbread and rolls were made from the same vegetable. One table was devoted to desserts. Small tarts filled sweet mushrooms, cakes drizzled with a sweet syrup made from the same mushrooms. A recognizeable dish was simple cheesecake. There was also something that appeared to be squares of fudge, but would be discovered to be lichen flavored. It was not quite chocolate, but it had a similar rich and complex flavor. A soft cheese was being served, as well, alongside crackers and a bowl of what appeared to be sweetly roasted nuts.

Xar'Cha Palace - To the Entrance

A cacophony of french horns (for trumpets are far too crass to announce such a lovely presence) herald the arrival of a very fashionably late guest to the party, and one extremely assured of her own importance. After the horns die away they are quickly and precisely replaced by a soft, harmonious melody of flutes fluttering through and around each other as their notes dance merrily together. Small yet deep hand drums join the chorus of sound, building their tempo slowly as the sound of feet marching in perfect time can finally be heard.

Finally, after several long minutes of the lively music heralding their arrival, the first of the group comes in sight of the enclave. Wearing knee-length black kilts with heavy padding and decorative sashes made of interlocked green and bronze scales of shimmering polished metals. Other than that, their bodies are bare.

Apart from the heralds, there are also four strong drow with darker than average skin carrying a truly massive sedan chair, covered in gold and silver filigree and draped with the finest heavy silk curtains that reveal nothing of who might be inside. A wafting scent of lavender comes from beneath the curtains along with a few curling fingers of heavy smoke that trail along the ground.

A high and cultured voice calls out in Drow as the sedan chair is brought to the enclave guards, the accent distinctly noble, "I am headed to this little event in the palace, and require an escort. Fetch one for me."

"I know we haven't gotten along that well before. I think it was mostly because of some trouble at Trog's," Zee muses to the giant spider. "I'm supposed to stop people from tearing each other apart there and she took it personally."

Maybe she should apologize?

Eh... or would drow just see that as weakness?

Weird crazy cultures!

...this seems like it's going to be a really one-sided conversation. But Zee doesn't seem to mind at all!

Mister G still seems to be in curious observation mode. He'll probably approach someone to chat eventually. Hopefully it won't be awkward. After all, he isn't quite as accustom to this as his half-sister.

And to add a little more blue to the occasion... Sadei slips out of one of the doorways leading deeper into the palace and into the ballroom, arrayed in a pretty little dress of the house colors. She had been taken to the Palace earlier in the day and introduced to Sornnolu. And she had finally been given a concrete reason why singing in public is frowned upon!

It struck her as very odd, to say the least. No singing because a godling likes it. And because most drow dislike the godling in question. It must make for a very sad, very quiet world...

Unlike Zee Sadei has absolutely no qualms against raiding buffet table. She hasn't eaten much today and so that platter of rothe had best fear for its continued existence.

Not long later, the escort requested approaches the new arrivals. Four of House Xar'Cha's royal guard have been spared for the escort. At their head is a young drow boy, perhaps around ten years old. Every aspect of his appearance has been carefully manacured. His clothing, coloured blue and gold to represent his House, is of fine craftsmanship. His short, white hair has been carefully groomed and his blue-black face and hands have been scrubbed clean. He is the perfect picture of a young drow noble of House Xar'Cha.

And he looks a bit uncomfortable. He's not particularly fond of these sorts of formal settings, but he was told very specifically what was expected of him. He stops before the sedan chair and bows deeply. "Greetings, Illharess. It's my honour, and the honour of House Xar'Cha, to receive you." He keeps his head inclined, out of respect and the secondary benefit of hiding his nervous expression.

There is a long, tense pause as no sound comes from the sedan chair's occupant, as if she was pondering the many and varied ways that the worm before her disgusted her with his mere presence.

Instead of saying as much, she instead queries, "You sound rather young. How many did house Xar'Cha send, if they are so honored to receive me?"

"Five, my Matron. Four guards and a boy." One of the bearers replies, his shoulders straining against the weight of the pole it supports.

"A mere four guards? Such honor I have scarce seen in so pitiful supply. It will have to do. To the palace, and don't tarry." The music, which had faded to a slow, rhythmic tapping along the edges of the drums, picks up once more as the bearers raise the sedan higher on their shoulders in preparation to move on through the gates. They wait for the escort to fall in around the litter of course, but if they have to wait long they'll begin walking without them, more afraid of the one they carry than of the guards in their way.

"It's a lovely event," Delisle says. Lying through her teeth, as she wants nothing more than to leave, but she's doing a good job of pretending to be delighted to be here. "The palace is quite beautiful. Vyrn, how does it compare to yours?"

Teb smiled slightly and sighed inwardly. Of course he had to pick two of the most important non-drow to talk to.

"Ah, representatives from Remnant, how delightful. Yes, the palace is quite beautiful. However, it pales in comparison to the structures we construct in the Underdark. Though it is somewhat easier to cultivate and tend the gardens up here than it is down there." The drow idly chatted with the two of them.

Vyrn can't help but smile a bit as Delisle brings that up. "Ah, the old Ascendant Palace. Rumor had it they were going to try to make it capable of flight, much like Remnant HQ is now." Considering Imperial mega-aircraft technology originated in the Dominion, as shown by Haven, that may very well have been possible for them at some point. "I'm sorry to say it's difficult to stand up to that palace, but then, it's a different sort altogether. This is not the headquarters and home of the highest-ranking members of House Xar'Cha, after all, so naturally it's not fair to compare it to that of the leaders of a superpower. As they are walking along, one of the drummers reaches into a pocket on his kilt and pulls out an official looking document, sealed with a large green wax emblem, that he holds out to the boy.

"If you're the herald, then this is for you to read to announce the matron's arrival. Do not skip a single word if you value your health." The drow's warning seems genuine, and isn't phrased as a threat. It's the type of matter-of-fact message that is passed discretely from one male drow to another when someone of higher status is on the warpath and it doesn't benefit anyone to have the receiver killed.

Once they arrive, The sedan chair is lowered to precisely a half-foot above the floor, held there by the kneeling litter-bearers who hold their arms rigid to keep it in place.

"Lillanthil." Says Lillanthil, giving her own charming smile. "Owner of Restaurante Enchante, in Inside. It's a pleasure to meet you both."
She turns to random drow chick.
"And if you'd like to know about my dress, it's a gift from a fabulous woman I know. Her rates are high, but well worth it. If you'd like, I could certainly put you in touch with her, Ms... uhm..."
Did you think you could get away with not revealing your name? Did you? DID YOU!? WELL I'M ON TO YOU! Oh yess..... e_e

"Alexis!" The drowess chooses, grinning. She'd always liked the name. It'd do for now. "And I'd just love that. You look beautiful. What's her name?"

Alorhna lifts one of her shoulders in a mild shrug, sipping from her blackberry wine. "It is difficult for an establishment such as this to cast aside the stigma attached to it. Our society is built on rumours and mistruths, Sir Amis. The best way to combat the rumours and mistruths is simply to run the best business I can." She smiles, looking at the spell-caster through her half-moon glasses. "So yes, I'm doing good business. For varying definitions of the word 'good,' I like to think."

[Shelob's Den: Earlier]

Amis takes another, longer drink from his glass, his mind clearly elsewhere as he listens to Alorhna's explanation.

"That may be true, but it sometimes the lies and mistruths that keep us alive." As he says this, he seems to snap out of his reverie and smile slightly. "Forgive me. I tend to go off on tangents. What gave you the idea to start this club?"

While Inala waits for the goblin to stop wasting everyone (especially her own); Asim looks over his shoulder and sees the sedan chair and realizes his position is rather precarious at the moment. He was the son of a minor house, with only a few tricks to keep him alive. Getting in the way of that Matron would be a very painful way to die. He bows quickly, excusing himself from the hostess and steps back to a safe distance.

"Presumably, they manage to hide well enough for most people not to find them. We've considered an expedition against the temple in Underside, but we need more information for that."
"They've been smart enough not to show their faces in Underside Colony, at least," the General adds. "If they had, they would have been shot on sight."

Naitiri's question is answered before Sornnolu can respond with the typically pompous announcement of a Matron. The mage bows low in respect as the Matron enters, and he sneaks a small, but approving nod to the boy who made the announcement. He had done his job well.

Felyn'wae bows as well, nearly as low as Sornnolu. Though female, she too was from a minor House. Her position in the church gave her power, but it was nothing compared to a full Matron.

[Administrative Headquarters - Front Steps]

The guard has managed to haul young Akoraun out of the Administrative building, earning herself no small amount of odd looks as they went through the hallways. Once outside, they will both spot the preparations for the grand gala that evening. Specifically, the one hundred and fifty drow soldiers gathered in the plaza between the Administrative building and the Palace. Each was fully armed and dressed in shining armor, assembling into ranks under the silent orders from their commanders.

"Damn it." The guard carrying Akoraun curses. "Now you've made me late!"

Deeming the boy's introduction to be satisfactory, there's a small amount of sound as the matron stands in her sedan chair's enclosed space, pausing to add an air of tension to the moment.

And then a petite, delicate hand reaches out past the edge of the curtain, sweeping it aside to reveal a-

...

An impressively tiny drow girl in a floral patterned pink and white dress with what appear to be whole pixie skulls sewn along the hem. Her face is screwed up into what would be a severe, intimidating scowl were she in any way mature, but instead comes through as the petulant pout of a child who's been refused a second helping of sweets. All things considered, she looks hardly any older than the boy who announced her so nervously just a moment ago.

"My my, this is rather wonderful isn't it? And where is the guest of honor then? I should like to approach her." The tiny matron somehow manages an imperious tone, casting dark glances about the assembled crowd.

Sornnolu straightens and steps forward, but keeps his eyes respectfully lowered. "Matron Baenneld, the Matron of House Xabaresh Chaeron has not yet made her appearance. I believe she is delaying that moment until all of the guests have arrived."

[Streets]

"No." The guard growls, pulling Akoraun down the diagonal street that led to the North Gate.

"Smart, I take it. Well then, I suppose I should wait for her with the rest of the guests then shouldn't I? What might your name be, so I can remember you to your Matron for your stunning hospitality." The tiny matron seems gracious enough despite her particular brand of boasting as she steps down from her massively oversized chair, waving for her bearers to move it away from the entrance so it's not blocking anything. Her small, flat black shoes click lightly on the flooring as she makes her way sedately to Sornnolu's position.

"I am Sornnolu Xar'Cha." The drow says, bowing again, pushing aside his pride and forgiving the young Matron for not knowing who he was. He had only planned this entire venture practically by himself, though he had been forced to give credit to his elder sister. "I thank you for your kind words, Matron. Should you require anything from me, please do not hesitate to ask." It was the polite thing to say. A formality, really, but Sornnolu feared Matron Baenneld would take advantage of the offer in every possible way.

Teb decide that this was a good time to walk up to the newly arrived Matron Baenneld and Sornnolu. He bowed deeply first to the young Matron and then towards Sornnolu.

"Greetings Matron Baenneld an honor to meet you, I am Tebtranlyn Xar'Cha. Sorry to interrupt Sornnolu but you did ask for regular security reports. Luckily there is nothing major to report. There was one attempt by a citizen to enter the grounds but the guards caught him and he is currently be held for question. Beyond that security has had no problem. If I maybe of anymore service, to either of you." Teb told the group of important drow, bowing once more as he awaited their responses.

The matron manages to hide a brief scowl at being interrupted by turning it into a toothy smile that, despite her race and position, somehow manages to look endearing, "A very tight hold on security then? That's so very good to hear. If you could leave us for a moment that will be all I require of you." The small matron turns away from Teb and back to her current victim of conversation.

"So you're Sornnolu then? You've become such a male of infamy I'm surprised I did not know you on sight." The matron looks left and right, and then leans forward secretively, holding a hand up to the side of her mouth and stage-whispering, "Perhaps you could take a moment to point out anyone else of importance to this colony I may have missed the description of?"

Sornnolu turns away from Teb and behind his back his fingers flash in Drow Sign: 'What were you thinking?!' Towards the young Matron, he is all smiles. "My half-sister, the Lady Ilpholin, is over there." He gestures towards the draeglolth. "She was born of this world and was one of the first among us here, however, she does not take interest in our colony, and instead leads the organization known as AMEN. Beside me, here, is Lady Felyn'wae Auvryana, Priestess of Lolth." The lady bows her head respectfully when she is mentioned. Her House was a small, but ancient one. "With her is Asim Aleth, his House is running the Customs House here in Delmah Phor. His mother, Matron Inala Aleth is there." The mage gestures to the older Matron, and then to a drow dressed rather flamboyantly in the colors of House Xar'Cha. "And that is my cousin Izz'daer. He... I am honestly not certain what it is he does here." Sornnolu finishes with a bewildered sigh. Either his cousin was following his own agenda, working for someone else, or just enjoying the luxurious life as a son of one of the Great Houses. Whatever it was, Sorn surely did not know. "Others will be coming, of course, Illharess. I know that my aunts will be arriving with Matron Xar'Cha, and still more of my House and others have yet to arrive."

"I suppose I will just enjoy your hospitality then, until a chance to speak with your Matron presents itself. I don't suppose I could borrow the lad who you had announce me? When Akoraun starts to struggle, the guard tightens her grip and hauls him off of his feet. For a split second she considers reaching for her knife, but they were already at the gate, it would cause too much trouble, and she was already late. Rather than slitting the little brats throat, the guard simply throws him out of the enclave. "Do not let him back in!" She tells the guards at the gate. "If he tries shoot him. He's a godsdamned spy!" With that, she turns and all but runs deeper into Delmah Phor.

Turning away from the view, he began to climb back down...

Arriving fashionably, or perhaps just late, came the... bodyguard? Escort? It wasn't especially clear what the man represented, wearing armour without any sort of drow house markings. The plates were finely made, and inlaid with silver runes, the helmet topped by a pair of soaring wings, the impassive blank face betraying no emotion, no hint of what might be hidden behind the helmet. There wasn't even a way to tell what race the armour's occupant belonged to. In any case, he was here, and the person he had arrived with was bound to cause the turning of more than a few heads...
