My DM is a pretty big homebrew fan, and we like to accomodate him (he usually buys pizza). So he offered us a campaign idea-No SRD-standard classes. Homebrew stuff only.

He suggested dandwiki as a source.

God help us.

So i trolled through both that abyssal nightmare of a wiki and it's much more preferable variant, dnd-wiki, for a few hours. I managed to find quite a bit of homebrew that actually seems quite playable. I think this is going to be a tier 1-3 campaign, so i'd like to ask the playground which of these seems appropriate.

http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Tenken_(3.5e_Class)

think speedy samurai. I really can't imagine this guy using anything but a katana.
There is a variant of this that's far more powerful, but that's designed for Tomes (as in Frank & K) campaigns, and I haven't cleared that with him.

This seems like a surprisingly fun mechanic, but the wand of Cure Moderate Wounds will quickly become my best pal.

http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Flare_Knight_(3.5e_Class)

a fun and flavorful gish-in-a-can. seems to use some odd psionics rules, but i like to learn.

Opinions?

The Tenken looks like a Monk fix that tries to solve its problems with bigger numbers.

The Gate Knight looks neat. It shouldn't be hard to get basic competence at damage and fear stacking, and some of its other effects look pretty cool. You'd have to be sure to stock up on lots of temp HP/healing, though.

Is the Flare Knight using the Advanced Player's Manual's Psychic system? I think I'm going to need to track that back down before I could say anything.

I agree with you on the tenken, but I'd still rather play one than an SRD standard monk. I was planning to go into this. (http://dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Iaijutsu_Master_(3.5e_Prestige_Class))

I do like the gate knight, fun and flavorful, but it might require some cosmology rewrites.

Advanced Player Manual is regrettably ringing no bells with me, but i like the class.

Maybe you could use another source? This very forum is rather good for homebrew, mostly owing to the system mastery of the general community. Quite a few people (including me) have posted lists of their stuff here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=60676). It could be a good place to start.

There are some absolutely fantastic homebrew here on giantitp you should really look through that before choosing a class.

This thread has some very interesting options for players. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=251550)

Play an Elven (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Elves,_Lords_of_Asylum_%283.5e_Race%29) Bishop (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Bishop_%283.5e_Class%29). Or maybe an Angel (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Ebtekal_Angel%283.5e_Race%29) or a Denizen (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Denizen_of_Valiancy_%283.5e_Race%29) Bishop. You should use definitely use bishop.

Well, it looks like somebody copy/pasted the entire system (http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Psychic_Powers_(DnD_Variant_Rule)) into dandwiki, so that shouldn't be a problem (it's OGC).

I think the system would be fun to try (if it can be done without half the table rolling up a Jack/Knack Bard or Factotum for all the freebies that skill-based magic gives them), but looking closer at the Flare Knight, it's really not done well.

Of the options listed in the OP, the Gate Knight looks the most interesting, but I'd echo the sentiment that wikis aren't very good places to find homebrew, even if they're relatively easy to use - their format allows low-quality materials to slip in without criticism, and it's easy for the criticism they do receive to go unnoticed.

Please use something from this thread (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=245701). It's got most of the better homebrew from across the webs.

Huh. Well, i was pretty much expecting an overwhelmingly negative response to the wiki classes. *shrug*

I did have a look-see at the homebrew compendium, and I found a invoker that i like (The Servitor, if you're interested). Thank you for all the input. I'll keep looking around.

Heaven help you. I'd suggest to him all homebrew feats and spells instead. It's a lot easier to keep sane. Set a standard (typically certain existing material), make everything match it, have the DM make the final adjustments to each one.
