The D&D campaign I running is going to be starting up soon so I wanted to improve the one thing my players criticized me on: Names, both of the creature and places.
The complaint is both that some names suck, and that some prominent locations/creatures dont have names.
I'm horrible coming up with remotely realistic names so I typically use an online name generator and try to pick the best ones if I bother coming up with names at all. Help?

Behind the Name: the etymology and history of first names (http://www.behindthename.com/)
and
Behind the Surname (http://surnames.behindthename.com/)
The first has thousands of names world-wide, the second does the same for surnames.
Also, there is Gary Gygax's Extraordinary Book of Names, but unfortunately the lowest price I've found for it is around $300. Some even ask for $1,500 or more.

Being a huge elderscrolls fan I use the morrowind wiki http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Names and depending on the type I use 1)dunmer names for almost anyone 2)Nord names for northeners, fighters and so on 3) khajiit/argonian names for intelligent monsters 4)Orc names for.. well orcs :P 5) imperial names for nobles and such 6) altmer/bosmer names for elves
I've made a notepad with all the names in and whenever a new character shows up I choose one name at random from the right list.
Hope that helps ;)
