How do you sustain, among low level throwing items, without turning into that one guy, begging your teammates for money to buy daggers?

;_;, I feel like am taking a vow of poverty without the benefits .

Either throw shuriken or resign yourself to throwing mundane daggers until you get enough money/levels to afford one of the tricks for making a full attack with the same thrown weapon. Shuriken are purchased and enchanted as ammunition, so you get a lot more of them for your money; the downside is that as ammunition, they are destroyed when you hit something (the other upside is that they are also ammunition for purposes of Greater Magic Weapon and similar spells, so you can get them buffed in bulk. The other downside is they're an exotic weapon, so you're stuck spending a feat on them or dipping Monk if you want proficiency.)

I thought throwing daggers counted as ammunition - as such breaks after use?

The Pathfinder Soulknife (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/psionics-unleashed/classes/soulknife) never runs out of ammo, and can start iterative/dual throwing as soon as level 2. Take TWF as your 1st-level bonus feat, then Mind Daggers as your first bladeskill, and go to town.

Full BAB too!

No, daggers don't break when you throw them. (unless someone manages to sunder them). They're treated like weapons, not ammunition.

Take a page from Assassin's Creed; steal your daggers. Alternatively, see if you can get darts, since those are pretty cheap. At worst, grab some rocks. Rip the armor and weapons off of bodies and sell it for knife-money. BoVD has rules for selling body parts, I think, if you need a few coppers for selling a guy's fingers and a brain. He won't need 'em anymore

And yeah, thrown weapons don't break on use. As long as you can pick the knives up after the fight's over, you should be fine.

retrieve them after the battle's over

pretty much this. in the real world, use of bows and crossbows only sometimes destroy the ammo and even then the damage is normally due to things like the target falling in such a way as to cause damage. hand axes, shuriken, and throwing knives have even less trouble with this.

talk to the DM, see what you can do. it never hurts to ask.

Cheap options for throwing:
Bloodstorm Blade PrC (ToB)
Hulking Hurler PrC (CW)
Drunken Master PrC (CW) + Chicken Infested Flaw (Drg#330)

Some ideas for getting infinite daggers to throw once you have the gp:

Glove of Endless Javelins (MIC)- ask the DM if you can change the javelin part to daggers if you also reduce the damage from 1d6+1 to 1d4+1

Gauntlet of Infinite Blades (MIC) - ask the DM if you can change the activation from Swift Action to Free Action so that you can throw more than one dagger per round.

Quiver of Anariel - ask the DM if you can change the "Quiver" to "Bandoleer" and arrow(s) to dagger(s).
Quiver of Anariel

Quiver of Anariel:Quivers of Anariel appear to be typical arrow containers capable of holding a score of arrows. However, the quivers automatically replenish themselves with standard or magical arrows, such that they are always full. Some quivers also create arrows made of special materials, such as adamantine, cold iron, or alchemical silver.

Once an arrow it taken from the quiver, it must be used within 1 round or it vanishes.

Moderate conjuration; CL 7th; Craft Wondrous Item, magic weapon, minor creation; Price 28,000 gp (standard arrows), 29,000 gp (masterwork arrows), 32,000 gp (+1 arrows), 44,000 gp (+2 arrows), 64,000 gp (+3 arrows), 92,000 gp (+4 arrows), 128,000 gp (+5 arrows); Add an additional +6,000 gp for adamantine arrows, +4,005 gp for cold iron arrows, or +200 gp for alchemical silver arrows; Weight 1 lb.
Thankfully someone saved this article here (http://web.archive.org/web/20070401150041/http:/ww2.wizards.com/Books/Wizards/?doc=fr_lonedrowstats) since WOTC decided to delete the original posting.

I like orcs with Brutal Throw (Complete Adventurer) and harpoons at low levels. They even have a handy rope to retrieve the thing by.

(My players don't like them as much, though.)

Daggers are poor choices for throwing weapons, because you'll always be at a disadvantage (until you take Far Shot anyway). Either you provoke an attack of opportunity for throwing because your target is 5' away and threatens you, or you'll incur range penalties since those start at 10'. At 20' the penalty doubles to -4. :smallmad:

You'll be much better off with javelins (30' is where the first -2 penalty kicks in) or darts (20' for -2 penalty). Javelins weigh 4x as much as darts, so that could be a consideration, though javelins have better base damage as well as better range. But because darts both weigh less and cost less than daggers, there's no good reason to be throwing daggers except where you've got a class restriction.

Frostburn. The Arms and Equipment Guide has a 3.0 version of it, but those rules require adaptation to the 3.5 weapon size rules (basically, that stuff about -2 on attack rolls for small creatures needs to go).

Since retrieving them after battle was already mentioned, as was stealing, I'd like to throw in improved disarm. Or perhaps crafting. The level 1 spell magic stone is also legit.

In Pathfinder, there is the Wooden Stake, which is free.
In D&D3.5 and Pathfinder, the club is free and throwable.

Otherwise, a short spear is cheaper than a dagger and hurts more.

Giant's Wrath (lv 3, SC) is pretty slick. You get three stones that turn into boulders once you throw them dealing decent damage.

Low level throwing is easy, you do just retrieve them. Once everybody has masterwork weapons it gets hard, because even if you run away from a fight once that's a lot of money to lose. So you have to skip masterwork for a while and your attack bonus is 1 point lower. Later you can get gloves of endless javelins (magic item compendium) for a few thousand gold.
