Hi,

First of all, can I out a mage armor spell on a chain shirt armor? (+8 AC Light Armor)

Second, how do you deal with monsters with AC over 20? How do you get Critical Hits? :smallfrown:

Thank you.

No, that won't stack. And as for the other matter: I just add my attack bonus to the roll .

No. Mage armor provides an armor bonus, and so does a chain shirt. You CAN, however, stack it with a Shield spell.
As for monsters with AC over 20: by having a high to-hit bonus.

To answer your first question, no, the spell wouldn't stack with chain shirt. They both provide a +4 Armor bonus to armor class, and bonuses of the same type (such as armor) do not stack.

As for your second question, a 20 is an automatic hit, no matter how high your enemy's armor class is. You can hit enemies with an AC of over 20 by getting a sufficiently high attack bonus.

EDIT: Swordsage'd.

1. No. They are both armour bonuses, they do not stack. Dodge bonuses are the only example of bonuses of the same sort stacking with themselves.

2. You add your attack bonus to the number rolled on the dice and compare that to the monsters AC. By default, your attack bonus is your base attack bonus + the relevant stat modifier (strength for melee, dex for range (also melee with light weapons and the weapon finesse feats). A good weapon, as well as feats, class abilities and situational modifiers (charging, flanking) will add further bonuses to your attack roll.

Most bonuses have a type. As you are well aware, bonuses of the same type don't stack. Mage Armor provides an Armor bonus, and a Chain Shirt, like all mundane armor, provides an Armor bonus. So based on that, do they stack?

Remember, every time you make an attack roll, you add your attack bonus. A monster with AC 20 is as easy to hit when you have attack bonus +10 as a monster with AC 0 is when you have attack bonus -10.

Hi
Hello.

First of all, can I out a mage armor spell on a chain shirt armor? (+8 AC Light Armor)

No. Because both Chain Shirt and Mage Armor give Armor bonus to AC. And bonuses of the same type don't stack.

Second, how do you deal with monsters with AC over 20? How do you get Critical Hits?

You get to-hit bonus. Also 20 on roll always hits and is always crital hit.

Hi,
Second, how do you deal with monsters with AC over 20? How do you get Critical Hits? :smallfrown:

Two 20's in a row (one for the to hit roll, one for the crit confirmation roll) will always crit, assuming the enemy is not immune to crits.

Also 20 on roll always hits and is always crital hit.

Not really - the crit needs to be confirmed with another roll that would have hit, in this case another 20, in order for it to be a critical hit. But a 20 on the to hit roll is always a hit and always a crit threat. Assuming the enemy isn't immune to crits.

Rolling natural 20 means you hit, it does not always mean you crit.

First of all, can I out a mage armor spell on a chain shirt armor? (+8 AC Light Armor)Indeed you can cast it on someone wearing a chain shirt (not the chain shirt itself as the spell has a target of creature touched) but mage armor won't do anything to improve the AC of the recipient. In fact it is pretty useless unless he or she is attacked by an incorporeal creature that would normally ignore the chain shirt. In which case they would benefit from the Mage Armor instead.

how do you deal with monsters with AC over 20? How do you get Critical Hits? :smallfrown:Buff your fighters so they have a higher chance of hitting (Bless is a good place to start), keep rolling till you score a hit. If you get a natural 20 then roll to confirm a critical and then roll damage. If you need a 20 to hit and you crit on an 18-20 then you still need to roll a 20 to hit and to crit.

Try grappling instead.

Right, natural 20 is always a hit and a critical threat

Since everyone else has addressed the question, let me ask a related one: you're obviously really really new to the game, and you're asking a very basic question. Why are you asking strangers on the internet, rather than your DM/whoever introduced you to the game?

Someone should do a meme out of it using the pic of the Swordsage in ToB or the Shadow Sun Ninja.

There's got to be a dnd illustration with two guys doing the same pose as Buzz and Woody somewhere. That would just be amazing.

Any picture filled with ninjas could work too.
