A wizard can sacrifice his familiar for animal companion. I got a gnome wizard that would like a riding dog to combo as mount and pet. Plus they trip like a wolf. Dm wants book and page. I thought UA, but he didn't see it.

It's also worth noting that taking Improved Familiar is another option for gaining a combatant familiar.

The Familiar handbook (http://dictummortuum.blogspot.com/2011/08/familiars-handbook.html) can help you out with this.
