Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Deadly's Ironically Presented Anti-Spoiler Measures

DO YOU HATE SPOILER TAGS?

Well, Deadly's here to help you get rid of them... with a vengeance! Create a new bookmark in your browser and copy the code below as the link/url of said bookmark. Name it something helpful, like "Spoilers B GONE!" or whatever. Then whenever you view a thread here on GitP you just hit the bookmark and BAM! no more spoilers.

You won't even see the boxes, just the bare innards in all their gory glory.

It also makes sure that no image is wider than 600px, to avoid stretching pages, and will attempt to "intelligently" remove repeated images except avatars. Neat, huh? Sadly that last part means stuff like pony emotes may get lost but the forum doesn't make it easy for me to single out images in quotes as I'd have liked... that's an open problem, I guess.

Tested in Firefox, Chrome and Opera. Should work in any modern browser, but you never know with these things.

Oh yes, I know about that artist, but I forgot about him. Good stuff. But I can't figure out how to access the artists I "watch" on DA, without making them friends.

Watching through season 1 due to a great Youtube video I found (I'm still not sure about the legality of linking here, on MMOC we're not allowed to link full episodes), and these comments are about Suited for Success. People call Rarity a name-dropper. But the mention of Hoity Toity was Spike's, and he and Twilight recognized him. on top of that, Spike said he spoke to him personally. So, what kind of status, individually, do Spike and Twilight even have in Canterlot? Would not the higher-ups of Canterlot during Sweet and Elite recognize her? And what exactly gives Spike the power to flame breath scrolls, but instead has them teleported to Princess Celestia? We know his history a little. Twilight raised him from birth. So, where does he get it? Does this confirm the theory that he is his own species of dragon, or at least one we haven't seen elsewhere?

Pretty good. So far this new land has been interesting. I felt the fog was a little cheap and would like to point out that we don't see the pegasi having difficulty moving through fog in Episode 1. Or moving through clouds for that matter.

A baby dragon, yes, but still a young creature that's growing up under the influence of both the local Princess and her student, and is going to end up pretty importent one day. He would partly be treated with respect because of his status, but also because even the stuck-up nobles know to be kind to something that will eventualy grow into something that can gnash it's teeth and breath fire.

Yeah, Cadence really threw the alicorn thing for a loop. Before, we could assume that only Luna and Celestia were, because they were basically guardians of Equestria. But now, nobody knows. But given Mr. Cake's odd explanation of pony genetics, I guess it's possible for royalty to not be alicorns.

Green Isn't Your Color

This just doesn't feel like a "Rarity/Fluttershy" episode. It feels like a Pinkie Pie episode. The issue here in this episode, is that Pinkie Pie is completely oblivious to everything. Surely the pony who "knows everybody in Ponyville" would be aware of the fact that Spike's crush on Rarity is a well-known fact and isn't a "secret". So, that being the case, she would have never egged on Twilight to keep her "secret" about Rarity and Fluttershy, and then there would be no conflict. Fluttershy didn't develop any personality in the episode, it just confirmed that she hated the spotlight. Rarity didn't really either.

The two girls at Carousel Boutique. "And you are?" "Rarity of course." "Never heard of you." Yeah, these two girls are obsessed with the famousness (yeah that's not a word) of Fluttershy, and Photo Finish, but doesn't know who Rarity is, in the same town, a pony who has been promoted by the likes of Hoity Toity. I don't buy it. rarity should be as well-known as Pinkie Pie.

Speaking of Photo Finish, while I don't think it's a point of the episode, she's not the bad guy here. She disregards Fluttershy's "pizazze" poses, and accepts her for what she is, the dainty, scared little girl she is. She got popular because of that, not because she was turned into something else. That's pretty admirable, especially given the state of celebrities these days in the real world.

I personally think the Hearthswarming Eve play was both lacking in details and presented to a large enough audience that I think we can say "artistic license" with a straight face. Especially since Cadence has been referred to as a unicorn, the fact that the "unicorns" controlled the sun and moon, does not actually preclude alicorns from being involved, even back then.

Also, my personal headcanon is still that Luna and Celestia are special and Cadence is an alicorn due to genetics but not an immortal, god-like being.

Of course, with the crystal kingdom arc coming up, it's entirely possible that the original speculation that Cadence is an immortal god-like being in charge of a different kingdom might turn out to be right.

The commas in Zecora's speech are sort of an alternative to putting each rhyme on a separate line, like you usually do with poetry. I don't know, maybe it's confusing.


The official punctuation for stanza breaks or whatnot in te English language is an arbitrary slash. No space. Often Italics but not always. For example;

Not necessarily. Remember, it was a magic contest for entry into magic school. When Twilight's power was released, Celestia obviously saw something special in her, and we're confirmed of that pretty much every episode with what magic she can do. I'd say her parents might be wealthy, at least well off enough to get her into the school (if it's a "private" school, which, with an entry exam like that, it probably is), but they don't have to be upper class people because Twilight was personally trained. It was always all about twilight's inner power.

I read that, personally, as Twilight competing for a scholarship by demonstrating her aptitude.


Ah, but Princess Cadance was Twilight's foalsitter before she had her cutie mark, and thus before she came to Celestia's attention.
I have to imagine that you don't get a Princess to foalsit your daughter unless your family is fairly high up the social food chain (no matter how much of a crush said Princess may or may not have on your son).

Cadence (Kay - dense, not Can - diss, just because I've seen it and it bugs me) is quite possibly ruler of a fallen kingdom. She would be at that point a nopony, at least until her fortune is reestablished.

That is a good question, waffles are like pancakes with syrup traps, and if you mix in some chocolate chips, it is like the most delicious breakfast food ever! Then again, I work nights, so my breakfast is at dinner time and I usually end up having dinner for breakfast, so I don't have waffles often enough to get sick of them.

That said, I wonder, what is everyone's favorite breakfast food here? That, and what do you consider breakfast food?

For example:


I have never heard of muffins as a breakfast food. I always thought they were a snack for "when you have several minutes and are too lazy to cook something", basically like a donut, just less likely to have filling.
I eat cereal for breakfast. If I'm feeling adventurous, I might have porridge with some syrup or jam. That's about it. I don't really want anything else that early in the morning.

If I wake up late my breakfast may just consist of oaty biscuits dunked in a cup of tea.

Speaking of Photo Finish, while I don't think it's a point of the episode, she's not the bad guy here. She disregards Fluttershy's "pizazze" poses, and accepts her for what she is, the dainty, scared little girl she is.
She also disregards Fluttershy's feelings and obvious discomfort in favour of pushing her in front of more cameras. At best you could say that she's oblivious to Fluttershy's plight.

I think it was the original story that launched the whole meme of Fluffy pony abuse. It was pretty silly, but also very, very wrong. I just shook my head and moved on, but apparently it catched on, because now Derpibooru has several dedicated tags that are all filtered out by default. And they are apparently very popular tags.

I don't mind sexy ponies, and I don't mind ... rough sexy ponies (or is that roughly sexy ponies?), but I'm not a fan of outright abuse.

1) Well, that depends on the particular situation. Life-or-death? I'm chowing down, no moral regrets (my ability to actually stomach the stuff due to cultural and biological conditioning is another matter entirely!). Otherwise? Definitely not worth it. It's rude-to-immoral depending on the exact situation, and then there's...
2) Yeah, this is why cannibalism is very much an emergency thing. All sorts of nasty things to be had from eating human flesh, and mad cow human disease is hardly the worst that can happen.

My headcanon is still that Celestia and Luna are technically horses and not ponies.

You know, it only just now occurred to me that perhaps this is the difference between them and Cadance. Cadance is a pony alicorn, while Celestia and Luna are horse alicorns?

Princess Cadence may have been down on her luck at the time, but she was still Princess Celestia's niece. There's a limit to how far she could fall down the Canterlot pecking order.

Is that so? Because I was specifically paying attention, and the closest the show came to giving them a relationship was giving both of them the title "Princess". And as far as canonicity goes, anything but the show is to be taken with various amounts of salt.

Besides, it's unlikely. IF Cadance is Celestia's neice, then one of three things is the case: EITHER Princess Luna had a foal before her banishment, and said foal grew very slowly for the first, what, 990 years? And then much faster after she met Twilight. And wasn't broadly known as Luna's daughter. OR Princess Luna and/or Nightmare Moon somehow had a foal while she was in the moon, who made it to Equestria through unhinted means. OR Celestia and Luna have at least one additional unhinted sibling. None of those, on the face of it, looks very plausible to me.

Luna, Fleur, and Cadance all use the same model so are approximately equal in size.

Luna in Se1Ep02 has nothing to do with growth and everything to do with being utterly drained of magical power by the Elements of Harmony.

Ultimately I feel it just plain sloppy to put Cadance with Celestia/Luna right now, she hasn't demonstrated the same level of ability, lacks the mane, and so forth. Cadance is functionally unicorn with high status. Her wings are merely incidental and completely unimportant.

Whether Celestia/Luna began the same or not their epic history included something else we don't know yet.

Because I'm alive and they aren't? My survival is more important then what they wanted. That simile also compleatly fails as she's alive and it's about a non necessary item.

You may wish to live as an immoral shell of a man who placated his conscience with tales of necessity, until the rationalization scars over the wound in your soul. I do not.

I see people who develop reputations of self control by being constantly about to fly of the handle but never doing so. And I laugh! That's not control. That's not will power. These people always buckle under stress, when willpower is needed most. I am willing to die for my moral convictions. I almost have on several occasions. Seeing people qualify moral stances with "so long as its comfortable and convenient" is silly.

To win this you have to back up another level. It's not about whether you are okay with an immoral act, it's about whether it's even immoral.

If you believe in Ultimate Judgement, then morality makes a great deal of difference. I'm not familiar enough with other morality frameworks to answer for them, but if (for instance) you believe Ammit will eat your heart if you're bad... well, you might decide it's better to starve now and have a good afterlife.

Edit: To clarify, by "other morality frameworks" I mean "reasons people are moral that have nothing to do with higher powers". I know they exist, but I'm not very familiar with them.

I see people who develop reputations of self control by being constantly about to fly of the handle but never doing so. And I laugh! That's not control. That's not will power. These people always buckle under stress, when willpower is needed most. I am willing to die for my moral convictions. I almost have on several occasions. Seeing people qualify moral stances with "so long as its comfortable and convenient" is silly.

To win this you have to back up another level. It's not about whether you are okay with an immoral act, it's about whether it's even immoral.

Anyway, morality is determined by your belief system. Nopony is going to strike you with lightning if you eat a corpse. So you're asking whether something is immoral is, frankly, kind of a silly question. All I have to do is say I don't think it is and I'm done.

This is also a big problem for these sort of hypothetical questions. What you're really trying to get is agreement from a bunch of different ponies about the proper course of action in a certain situation. But while that's easy for something like theft (everypony agrees that stealing someone's wallet is a bad thing), when you ask a controversial question like weighing a belief in the sanctity of a dead body vs. the life of another person, you're not going to get a simple answer and, frankly, there's not a ton of discussion to be had either. I think life is more important than the sanctity of a dead body. But why? *shrug* I dunno, I just put a lot of value on a life relative to other things. Probably had to do with a whole bunch of stuff with how I was raised, not all of which I'm conscious of right now. I don't think the why of it matters much because we're already talking about values, which is at a fundamental level. It's like asking why I like the color blue better than the color red.

Ads are also notorious liars and suffer straight up errors much of the time. Frankly doesn't bother me because they aren't supposed to be factual, but at the same time they aren't a source for anything.

This isn't a pony rule its a general rule. I find book summaries/descriptions on dust jackets or when ordering a pretty rich source of misleading information.

And one of several reasons I think the only the shows themselves are entirely official. WoG also exists but should only be extended to a VERY limited scope after which it ends completely.

Mere corporate connection is not enough. Merch is broadly at zero already for having no bear, marketing is just at negative values for temporary and as a medium too often wrong. Course in the real world convergence can and often does happen, but until it does it hasn't.

(Also the show is copyrighted by Hasbro Studio, neither the Hub nor Discovery appear in the credits for the show. Though okay I only checked one credit reel. Hasbro Studio itself is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hasbro who separately own a 50% stake in the Hub. Technically the Hub is merely a host for US media markets. This is largely separate from canon but I see ponies try to invoke the Hub a fair bit yet the Hub has no real status.)

I mention aristocracy by most normal standards Celestia and Luna would probably be considered to have no relatives because any relations are ridiculously removed. I'd speculate they only have consideration because Celestia must have had some form of legal heir while Luna was on the moon.

For your second point bluebloods generally like y'know blood. Also unless we are ascribing a paternal relationship on Celestia's part (which conflicts with Blueblood as "nephew" for starters) that doesn't actually help anything because being adopted would still require simply one less generation in the thousand year chain from when, presumably, the two sister's aunts/uncles were alive.

You misunderstand. The question was a statement. It is, in the end, my ultimate thought on the matter.

Who you are is of little consequence. Your legacy is immortal, you are rotting meat. I would rather die for my beliefs and bolster that legacy, than live on biologically. If you're going to die anyway, why avoid prion diseases? Heck, why avoid starving?

Of course. This discussion is about the banal trivia. I enjoy those, when everyone knows that's what they are. Dissecting why the continuation of biological processes is important enough to not only over-ride rational thought on a matter but also causes such thought to shut down is fun. We have preperations and protocols and plans and schemes, and things even I am not privy to. We would make such a victory costly. We would make it hurt. Billions, if not trillions and more, would die and worse than die in the resultant conflageration. We would, out of sheer spite, make your victory bitter and hollow and empty.

And given how even the most powerful among you can't just fix the universe - you can't even fix Earth, for crying out loud - nor, for that matter even just Ponythid - there would be no way to undo it, no deus ex machina that could repair the damage. Not even fiddling with even the timeline - because that would have knock-on effects you can't even begin to see, EVEN IF you managed to somehow overcome the fact that most of Aotrs space - like most of the galazy - is not in an area of mutable time in the first place.

Oh, you could reboot the thread... But that would not bring back the countless lives stolen on planets you've never even heard of, the unnumbered innocents who would likely have died without even knowing why.

So you must ask the question, ponythread: would that be worth it?

Never forget that there is a REASON the Aotrs have risen from an ancient, no-tech army lead by one Lich to a paramilitary organisation to one of the galaxy's major powers, despite our relatively tiny size and despite good powers several times more powerful than ourselves active in the galaxy.



And for those of your clearly so bitter about Ponythid, remember that I have never made secret of what I am, ever. I warned her, I gave her every single chance to see that I was not bluffing, nor lying nor deluding myself that was Evil, that I was serious and still she would not listen. Of course. This discussion is about the banal trivia. I enjoy those, when everyone knows that's what they are. Dissecting why the continuation of biological processes is important enough to not only over-ride rational thought on a matter but also causes such thought to shut down is fun. I mention aristocracy by most normal standards Celestia and Luna would probably be considered to have no relatives because any relations are ridiculously removed. I'd speculate they only have consideration because Celestia must have had some form of legal heir while Luna was on the moon.

For your second point bluebloods generally like y'know blood. Also unless we are ascribing a paternal relationship on Celestia's part (which conflicts with Blueblood as "nephew" for starters) that doesn't actually help anything because being adopted would still require simply one less generation in the thousand year chain from when, presumably, the two sister's aunts/uncles were alive.

Is it important that Cadance not be Celestia's niece? I mean, I'm not giving the ad that much credit or anything, but we don't have any canon evidence contradicting it. So on one side we have what you consider to be a very weak source saying she's the niece, and on the other side we have no evidence at all. That still suggests that niece=yes should be the default interpretation unless there's some important reason why having Cadance be related to Celestia messes stuff up.

I got the impression that it is very much officially confirmed to be CadAnce and not CadEnce, but I'm not sure of the source of that.

Personally I don't mind. People give their children names with much stranger spellings than that, so why not ponies? In fact, the more I think about it, the more I feel a pretty pink pony princess like Cadance, the most obvious marketing ploy ever, needs something to make her a little less generic and forgettable. It's a futile effort in the face of all that pure pink plainness, of course, but nevertheless.

I'd pronounce Cadance and Cadence the same. That's what comes natural to me, but that might just be me. Edit: Apparently it ought to depend on whether your from the US or the UK. In the US there should be no difference in pronunciation, generally speaking, ignoring all the many, many subtleties of dialects I'm sure

I'd say it's not entirely implausible, especially if some species would rather terraform than wander off hoping to find something appropriate to their physiology, for the galaxy to contain well over 125 inhabited planets. And that's all it would take to reach a trillion if we assume Earth is fairly average (instead of high-end).

Is it important that Cadance not be Celestia's niece? I mean, I'm not giving the ad that much credit or anything, but we don't have any canon evidence contradicting it. So on one side we have what you consider to be a very weak source saying she's the niece, and on the other side we have no evidence at all. That still suggests that niece=yes should be the default interpretation unless there's some important reason why having Cadance be related to Celestia messes stuff up.

Its less about the particular issue then about what people look to for information. Ads are irrelevant because they are always irrelevant. You want rake through every bit of promotional material and see if it adds up to a harmonious whole? Bet you bits to pony feathers it doesn't.

Taking marketing you will inevitably have to account for why say a synopsis was misleading or flat wrong, you inevitably will be picking and choosing what is "true."

Canonicity does not have ever decreasing degrees, it goes to a certain point and then stops dead. Its sharply limited. Corporate authority can do that, but only when discernibly in that specific capacity.

Now "Celestia's niece" on its own is already dealt with by Blueblood's parallel case. Until Celestia is revealed to have another sibling it doesn't matter since obviously she's not Celestia's daughter and Luna was on another planetary body when Cadance was a filly. Its just Blueblood all over again, really a distant relation simply called niece by ponies.

Word of Faust is that Celestia/Luna have no siblings or children, as a background detail from the creator that has the fullest weight possible until the show changes it onscreen.

Did some train reading again. Thanks for entertaining me, priests of Apollony. I have the following to say, in no particular order:

"Yours truly" was great. I have no idea what emotion it filled me with, and why, but ugghhh ~_~
"The old stories" reminded me of "The Homilies of Blessed Almalexia", for obvious reasons. Also, legends and African fairytales, but that's even more obvious.
"Do not serve these ponies" and "A study in rainbows" were fun and well written, even if I can't say much more about them. Having the tar falls be a common world feature is definitely a cool idea.
"What dreams may come" left a big impact. This one I know why: I have a problem with making big decisions. I'm either destroying the world where I chose (a) or the world where I chose (b). But that's after-over-analisys, it just worked for me. Also, it's well written and stuff. I was thankful the climax was not longer and more developed. Maybe it should have been, or maybe that would have been a bit cliche and overdrawn.
"Always has been" is delightfully meta. It's not finished, right?
"Dark night" is a story that needed to exist, as simple as that.
"Duel nature" is not finished and already pretty long, but it managed to keep me interested to the latest chapter. You're good at characters and interactions, aren't you?
"Mood wings" contains my favorite type of shipping: humorous. And my favorite type of humor: innocently saucy.
"Twilight discovers literary analysis" is bizzaro-world version of "A beautiful day in Equestria". Fun fun fun. It's the kind of meta experiments fanfics are great for.
"Writing is hard" reminds me in some way of "Naked singularity". WiH is shorter and with less build-up has less potential for facepalmingly excruciating shame. On the other hoof, you have six different silly styles instead of one.
"No tame forest" was a nice story. It's not something I usually look for, but it's good to see ponies having good old-fashioned pony adventures. Developing Zecora is a nice plus.
"The pony who wanted to be a real puppet" is the one I probably liked the least of this batch of fanfics, but not by much. For my taste the premise is too mean to be vanilla, and the execution is not dark and psychological enough to be a serious what-if. It is an interesting idea though.
"Fillysata" in epub format doesn't show most of the third act on my reader, so I put it (and the sequels) off for later.

Also, late Chekhov is much better then his early stories IMO. Probably because he's not trying to be so funny all the time to please the publishers. On that note, putting the complete body of works on the reader probably was not worth it, the man has written a lot of letters and stuff in his life.

2) Option C: Join the cult, throw them a party. Inadvertantly ruin their plans by dropping popcorn into their summoning ritual.

Its less about the particular issue then about what people look to for information. Ads are irrelevant because they are always irrelevant. You want rake through every bit of promotional material and see if it adds up to a harmonious whole? Bet you bits to pony feathers it doesn't.

Taking marketing you will inevitably have to account for why say a synopsis was misleading or flat wrong, you inevitably will be picking and choosing what is "true."

Canonicity does not have ever decreasing degrees, it goes to a certain point and then stops dead. Its sharply limited. Corporate authority can do that, but only when discernibly in that specific capacity.

Now "Celestia's niece" on its own is already dealt with by Blueblood's parallel case. Until Celestia is revealed to have another sibling it doesn't matter since obviously she's not Celestia's daughter and Luna was on another planetary body when Cadance was a filly. Its just Blueblood all over again, really a distant relation simply called niece by ponies.

Word of Faust is that Celestia/Luna have no siblings or children, as a background detail from the creator that has the fullest weight possible until the show changes it onscreen.

Perhaps better to say that the add is meaningless, irrelevant to speculation, or unofficial. Always knowing where a notion comes from is important in and of itself, but in the interest of accuracy.

However that Times advertisement... offers no meaningful support one way or the other. Even if its right it is effectively just a coincidence.

This is apparently the source of our disagreement.

Fanon is when something isn't explained and we, as a collective, come up with a plausible explanation for it based off of logic and evidence as presented in the show. An advertisement, corporate announcement or other non-show official material is still providing official information about the show, albeit information that could be contradicted later.

If/when the advertisement is contradicted by the show itself, it is correct to disregard the add because the show itself is the primary source of its canon. In the absence of conflict, I see no reason to disregard the advertisement, however. It is providing us a piece of information that is not contradicted by any other source.

Actually, in this particular case with Cadance, you did mention the Faust quote that implies Luna and Celestia have no direct relatives, so the advertisement is somewhat contradicted and we can fall back on show canon to suggest to that whatever is meant by referring to Cadance as "niece" is the same thing that was meant by referring to Blueblood as "nephew." Even with this correction, the information that Cadance is a "niece" is not contradicted anywhere, we're just less sure of what "niece" means than we were before.

My general point here is that, in addressing any question, we should look at all the evidence available from all sources, decide on its relative weight, and make a decision. And I don't think that fanon has the same weight as an official announcement about something in the show.

Given the arsenal at his command, if the nutcase had really wanted to he could have done a lot more than knock a few holes in Canterlot (in case you've forgotten, Dive Bomb was the one who actually blew up Canterlot). Personally, I think this "decide on its relative weight" is the crux of the issue. For myself, and apparently for Soras, the relative weight of anything but the show itself is pretty dang low. (For instance: in those cases where my own speculation conflicts with the map that showed up a while ago, I consider the map completely wrong.) Whereas you appear to be arguing that the relative weight of each individual point of information - each advertisement, each wiki page, each off-the-cuff quote by a voice actor - should be determined separately and individually, and in many cases higher than I'm willing to set it.

Personally, I think this "decide on its relative weight" is the crux of the issue. For myself, and apparently for Soras, the relative weight of anything but the show itself is pretty dang low. (For instance: in those cases where my own speculation conflicts with the map that showed up a while ago, I consider the map completely wrong.) Whereas you appear to be arguing that the relative weight of each individual point of information - each advertisement, each wiki page, each off-the-cuff quote by a voice actor - should be determined separately and individually, and in many cases higher than I'm willing to set it.

Here's my distinction. As I said to Soras, he's free to discount anything he wants in his personal views, and you, similarly, are free to discount the map if you don't like it. But Soras also said

As for Bleakbane, he's, seriously, not a problem. His existence isn't a crime, and he hasn't really done anything evil, until the the whole assisted suicide thing. If a demonically powered megalomaniac comes here to cool his jets and enjoy ponies, who are we to trow his race in his face? Isn't that a little bit tacky?

Not actively a problem, and certainly no worse being here than anywhere, but at the end of the day the Army of the Red Spear is a space faring army of undead megalomaniacs, led by someone eviler and more maniacal even than Bleakbane who is a creature that regularly enjoys Puppy and Kitten smoothies, (Purely one imagines for the evulz, because otherwise it's just a meat-shake and that doesn't sound very refreshing). I seriously doubt that his secret plans are going to be benevolant ones, and I think it's only fair to acknoledge this. It's not like it's a secret.

Though, if the leader of the AOTRS (Lord Death Despair wasn't it?) secret plans turn out to be to usher in an era of love, tolerance and fluffy goodness across the entire galaxy, that would be hilarious to watch happen.
