I've only ever played as a DM, and have been playing D&D for a few years now. I just finally got one of my players to pick up being a DM for a campaign, and so I can finally get the glory of playing a character

I've decided to play a sorcerer, for reasons of the campaign story and because I enjoy spellcasters.

We start at level 5, with 5500 gold.

So, are there any feats or items that can increase the number of spells my Sorcerer can learn by a good bit?

I love arcane disciple. It is a rare combination of being both powerful and has the potential to add a lot of RP value for the character in one condensed shell. Ex. My undead hunting sorcerer took Sun Domain to go with his Pelor worshiping.

Obligatory:

Arcane disciple doesn't actually increase your spells known, it just adds some to your class list, which you then have to take as normal.

A couple options, off the top of my head, are runestaffs, the sandshaper PrC, and the mage of the arcane order PrC.

Take the Ancestral Relic feat, BoED, and make it a custom Runestaff, MIC p224 under the "Creating New Runestaffs" heading. Starting out it should be a Masterwork Elvencraft (RotW) (Composite) Longbow that functions as a Masterwork/Masterwork Quarterstaff. Just unstring it and use it as a walking stick if you're not an Elf or Outsider or otherwise proficient with bows. (+0 LA Aasimar (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20040213a) is an extremely strong choice and gains proficiency with all martial weapons (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/typesSubtypes.htm#outsiderType), and you never have to spend a level (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/sp/20030824a) on the rest of its benefits.)

If the party would sell loot for half value, buy it out of the party's treasure pool for that price, and when that sum gets divided you'll get a portion back. Sacrifice the loot's full value into your relic, so you get to upgrade it for less than half price. Its properties have to stay within the level based value limit, but you can store up as much value in it as you want for later use. Each time you upgrade/modify what magical properties it has, you can completely change everything about it, as long as the end result is the same type of item (staff) and stays within the value limit. That means you can trade out the spells it grants for different ones whenever you get some downtime.

When you get into the higher levels (>10) it'll have every spell you want on it and you'll be looking for more stuff to add. At that point, consider making the bow portion +1 with Skillful (CA) and/or Seeking. Each end of the quarterstaff portion should be +1 Defending, and use (Rod of Extended) Greater Magic Weapon on it twice per day and put both bonuses toward your AC. You can also put the Warning and Eager weapon properties on those.

Obligatory Shax's Indispensable Haversack (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=148101).

If you're allowed to use any Pathfinder content, you can take an extra spell every level as your Favored Class bonus. The spell must be at least 1 level lower than the highest you can cast.

the Extra Spell feat. complete arcane. don't know how many feats you want to spend on more spells, but this will get you more castable spells.

Bloodlines in the Dragon Compendium will add extra spells known, as will the Mother Cyst line of feats in Libris Mortis (including a couple of very nasty ones). You can also get 1/day spells from the Domain Access feature of a Sorcerer in Complete Champion, at the price of a 1st and 2nd level spell (although there seems to be some conflict over just what you're giving up). And you can always take a level of Sand Shaper for Desert Magic (which adds something on the order of forty spells to your spell list). Plus, I think a Celestial Arcanist (Book of Exalted Deeds) can have all the sanctified spells on their spells known (note that this also includes sanctified spells in Champions of Valor).

More in-line with 3.5 mechanics and easier to slot in is the Expanded Arcana (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/general-feats/expanded-arcana) feat.

Are you referencing 3.5 or Pathfinder?

There's a 3rd-party Pathfinder feat called extra spells known (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/feats/3rd-party-feats/super-genius-games/general-feats/extra-spells-known) for spontaneous casters only. Don't know if that was what you were looking for though.

Domain Access only has you give up the 1st and 2nd level at first, but you actually lose one spell known of every level, and each is replaced with one from your domain that you may only cast once per day.

My Necrotic Apprentice trick involves taking the Mother Cyst feat with the Apprentice Spellcaster feat and a Bloodline feat or two.

Apprentice Spellcaster lets you trade out a spell at each level in addition to the ones you trade normally from Sorcerer at even levels beginning with fourth. This means you can learn 11/20/29 spells extra spread out over the levels depending on how many feats you want to invest.

There's also the drake helm from Explorer's Handbook (Because of a probable editing oversight it has the ability to let you add ANY arcane spell, even if not on your list). There are also knowstones from Dragon 333, which allow you to cast class list specific spells from them, even if you don't personally know the spell.

Edit: Cerebrosis from Dragon 330 adds Lovecraftian awesome to anyone willing to risk insanity/bodily harm to gain spells connected to the Far Realm.
