I'm referring to the Iron Defender (ECS) specifically, but I think this applies to any homonculous. As a magic item, it would take 1 day per 1,000 gp in the base price, but it also gives a materials cost (75gp) and a craft DC (14). Do you treat this cost and DC like a regular Craft check (price in sp, progress over 1 week)? Or do you just have to succeed once on the Craft check over the course of the 2 days it takes you to create the rest?

Hmm. It might be that the body needs to be made and then the rest of the cost is for enchanting it/making it into a homunculus. Or the cost is supposed to already be subsumed into the greater cost of the homunculus. :smallconfused:

I can't remember, sorry.

First you craft it all, then you can start enchanting it to become alive.

Crafting takes a while, so you might be there a few weeks crafting the thing before you start the enchanting process.

IIRC, crafting the body takes no extra time itself as long as the caster is the one doing it. There's a clause in the construction rules in the MM's basic homonculous entry that specify this.

If you're hiring a craftsman to shape the body, after you've provided the necessary components, then you'd need to wait until he was done before you could begin animating it.
