View Full Version : The Librarium Necromantica- Early Submission/Intrest thread

With all the Homebrew made on this site there has been several projects made to create databases and compendiums of mass amounts of homebrew content so one can find the homebrew they want easier. Most of these are massive and generic, seeking to compile all kinds of homebrew that do all kinds of different things together in one thread or a small number of threads.

However, I had an idea for another such "compendium" type project, but with a major twist; Instead of trying to compile as much homebrew in one place as possible, we instead focus on choose homebrew that does a specific thing and place all of them in the same "database" That one thing? Necromancy. That's right, I want to create a database of all necromantic-themed homebrew. Necromancy-themed base classes, Necromantic PrCs, new necromancy spells, new feats for necromancers and even new undead monsters for those more inclined to the other side of the screen would all be included in this compendium.

In addition, since we are already going for a narrow focus, I thought it would also be interesting to "step it up" and instead of simply compiling necromancy-based homebrew we could also have in the database links to key handbooks/guides relating to necromancy as well. Essentially, we'd be building the ultimate resource for those interested in Necromancy, collecting homebrew and useful resources regarding Necromancy and the undead in one place for reference and use by players and DMs alike.

So, now I open this up to all of you. Would any of you out there with Necromancy-related Homebrew be interested in this? If so, please post here. This thread is mainly for early submissions/people interested in putting their homebrew in such a compendium and perhaps working on said compendium themselves. So please, if you have any necromancy-related homebrew you'd like to stick in this post here.

Now this sir, is brilliant. I'll see if I can't russle up some things.

I am also intensely interested in this. I have plenty of necromancy based classes so I will post some of mine here.

If anyone wants to comment on them before they get submitted that would be fine as well.

Horned Harbinger fix: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208642
Soul Devourer: Not so much undead necromancy but more of a life draining warrior.: http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=211046

Lord of the Uttercold: Undead lord who controls frost and massive hordes of undead. http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195580

Necrotic Infester: A class focused exclusively on the mother cyst spells from libris mortis. http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=197668

Dusk Spiritualist: An odd spell like ability based class focused on positive and negative energy based effects. http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225936

I have a Necrocarnate fix (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13759876#post13759876), along with some new necrocarnum soulmelds (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=13759924#post13759924).

This is a brilliant idea. If it works it might even expand to different topics.

Giegue

Yeah. That was kinda my plan. I started with Necromancy because it is a topic close to my heart, but the second "Librarium" would be the "Librarium of War" or something like that, and would be devoted to martial adepts/TOB homebrew since it's so popular on this site and some amazing work has been done with it.

Anyway, I have two PrCs I'm throwing in myself, and working SLOWLY on a very odd necromantic base class thats based primarily around incorporeal undead. Always thought the "ghost master" was an under-used archtype for necromancy and decided I wanted to change that myself...

Letting you all know that I am still planning on doing this. I will be putting up the actual database thread soon but before I can do that I want you to either PM me a short blurb about your class(es) or PM said blurb(s) to me. The blurb should be concise and brief, and get across what your class is/what it is meant to do. Once I get a few blurbs the thread will go up. I don't need ALL of your blurbs to start, just a few, as I can update the thread with the rest of them as I receive them.

I've got one, I considered not mentioning it but for the sake of completeness I decided to post it.

The Ebon Initiate (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163297), who is warrior necromancer/warlock type who has many options as to how he can make his necromancies work, plus the following prestige classes for it:

The Necromera (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199801) - An ebon initiate prestige class that uses blood magic and invocations to transform into a vampire.
Twixil Night Blade (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=208125) - An ebon initiate prestige class that turns the powers of death against death's forces itself. [LoB]
Knights of the Ashen Blade (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167456) - Warriors devoted to death and revenge, an Ebon Initiate PrC. [LoB]
Frostwrought Scions (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=167658) - Necromancer invokers who walk the path to become a frost lich.
Death Marshal (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=260565) - An ebon initiate/gunslinger (or magus/gunslinger) PrC
Margrave of the Black Gate (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195817) - A blending on the Ebon Initiate and the Binder class, using the the vestige Ahriman (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=195639)that causes the character to become a bound wraith.

Base Class:
Necronomist (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4915296&postcount=2): A truenamer gish/necromantic minion master (Uses Kellus' Truenamer fix)

Prestige Class:
Shadow Necromancer (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4077943&postcount=43): A shadowcaster protected by her Ebon Army

Discipline:
Border of Life (http://www.minmaxboards.com/index.php?topic=4589.msg64118#msg64118): The Border of Life school focuses on channeling the power of death in an elegant way, avoiding needless killing and inflicting painless harm. My two creation I'm most proud of is the Nightlord of Moil PrC (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=210223), which won PrC Contest XXVIII.

I also made the Narrow Bridge (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=113982) martial discipline which focuses on the delicate balance between life and death. There's also associated feats (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=142932), and an associated PrC the Seeker of Lost Swords (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139580) who use necromancy to recover lost martial knowledge and skill.

We have the Knight of the Grave (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=7653119&postcount=17), which is a gish that develops a progressively stronger undead mount.

Then we have the Dancer of the Threshold (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=229089) which uses dance to channel necromancy.

Finally, we have the Necrotic Gearlord (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11539030) which is essentially steampunk necromancy. You get to make undead with gears and spring components while slowly modifying oneself into the ultimate clockwork undead hybrid.

This is awsome! I've noticed quite a few people are very anti necromancy or anti evil PC's period. So its good to see this I'll have my "good" necro PRC I used in a campaign a while back; peached in the homebrew area then post it here.

12:35 - Here's the link to my Homebrew, I designed it after getting sick of not being able to be a necromancer in all the good campaigns my friends wanted to do. Usually always haveing a paladin in the party sucks.

How to get a bunch of Undead out of one corpse:
Corpse Ripper: A spell that simplifies the creation of these.

Slithering Liver: Constitution damage al la the Poison spell. Completed now.

Sinister Spinal Cord (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=199098): Paralysis followed by it wrapping around the victim's throat to attempt a slow strangulation.

Zooming Brain: Fly past on barely controlled course damaging all mental abilities for a brief duration.

Fat Glob: Slow, weak, but LOTS of HD, and a fatigue effect if it hits.

Rolling Eyeball (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6178899#post6178899): Scouts, spies, and roving patrols. Zero offensive capabilities unless taken from something with a gaze attack or eye-rays.

Floating Lungs: Based around the Shout spell.

Hopping Stomach (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3301315): Spits acid.

Gut Snake (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=3295643&postcount=8): Undead intestines that fight with constriction, filth, and odor. Comment HERE (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26636&page=16).

Empty Skin: Macabre, but not always aggressive. Freak your characters/players out without a single die rolled... Intelligent servants for the necromancer just starting to come into his true power.

Dark Hearts: Literally pulsing with negative energy these repair the undead near them, and damage the living.

(Also have future plans for a "Muscle Mass" that deals strength Damage, Skulking Bladders that poison food and drink, and maybe flying inner ears that disorient via touch or maybe ray.)

Guess I'll toss up what I have (since I know that I'll never have the time to scratch up all the homebrew I want :smalltongue:)

Medicine Man: Everyone wants to live forever, but not like this... aging beyond recognition until you look the horrors of everyone's darkest dreams, subsisting off the dead, and the dead being your only companions for melenia. None know death so well as those who have lived through it for a hundred thousand years.

Bloodspilt: Not an actual necromancy class, but of the same genera. A rather gory blood mage that grows into a vampire that knows blood better then any other.

DracoDei

I was looking through my extended sig and found two more things... although one of them is sorta borderline. Are deathless welcome here? Well, this is something that is not only deathless, but mechanically rewards you for being friendly.

Mummy (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=8617020#post8617020): Because I believe that almost all undead should be templates. First post of a thread that will hopefully be dedicated to that concept.

Eripmav: This is a "Low-Powered Non-Evil Vampire". Sounds pretty boring right? Nope! It has a lot of interesting quirks to it, and replaces all that over-done angst with something that encourages roleplay with random NPCs and maybe even between party members.

The Librarium Necromantica

Welcome to the Librarium Necromantica, a compilation of different necromantic homebrew, hopefully the first in a plenty-long line of other homebrew compilations. Please read the rules before you post things.

The Rules

All work is CC-BY-SA, no illegal things, keep it nice, please post references to esoteric material. Also if you post content, don't force catalogers to sig-hunt, because that's just a pain, and if you plug for someone make sure they're credited.

If a single category gets big enough, it'll get split or start taking up sub-categories. Due to the magic of Ctrl-F, organization isn't all that important.

Handbooks

Big compilations. Their contents will be listed separately throughout the Necromantica, and will be annotated to source.

References

Some things crop up in different places throughout this compilation, and it's a pain to figure out just what vampire template The Tome of Necromancy Death Knight is referencing, or what class was written from Margrave of the Black Gate, etc. As a result, the following section is a list of references written in superscript that you will find throughout the compilation. This might get expanded later on to acronyms like Spell, Inv, Sou, and so on to designate classes based on specific power systems, but we'll see...

EbI The ebon initiate (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=163297), a base class.
PF Pathfinder material.

Sorry for the double post, I felt it was a necessity.

Firstly, many thanks to Giegue and I'm sorry for doing this without any sort of warning.

Secondly, if Giegue or anybody else feels the need to edit this and/or move it to another thread, I'm formatting this as part of a community effort and so I'm totally fine with you copy/pasting this anywhere.

Thirdly, there are some things I'm running into as I post this stuff, and I'd like your help.

Formatting: To spoiler or not to spoiler? I think the current set-up of subheadings works fine, but what do you guys think about compactness?
Categories: Classes were pretty easy, but I'm not sure how to categorize feats for easy browsing. My current set-up is by common necromancer tactics, but suggestions are welcome
Rules: I'm going to write a blurb about the rules of posting requests for the compendium, ideally to be lifted en masse to any other compendium. After reading those through, suggestions are requested.
Info: Unfortunately, blurbs about classes take up a lot of space and involve waiting, but I can't think of a way to get information about a class across otherwise. I propose tags, the stuff that I've started putting in superscript, but that has a host of its own problems. What do you guys think?
Extra Goodies: A lot of classes come with their own accompanying feats, ACFs, etc. My current set-up has spoilers that list any extra stuff a class comes with, but it seems a little clunky. Suggestions would be appreciated.
So I see people do this thing occasionally (sirpercival's homebrew is a good example) where they link to a specific post in a thread without removing the rest of the thread from view. If anybody could tell me how to do that I'd be much obliged.

Rules of Submission

Everyone who has posted above this post is exempt, but infodumps after this should please try to follow suit. The following things are requested when you post an item of homebrew:
When submitting material, describe which sections and subsections the homebrew fits under. If you feel that your material needs a new subsection, request an addition.
Any contributor's names and what they contributed to. Ideas aren't so important, but if some guy wrote a feat for you, please say so.
A bulleted list of mechanical descriptors that define your class (for the future) such as invocation-user, vancian caster, etc. Rolls such as "bruiser" would be appreciated, but I think the compendium's higher priority is mechanical descriptors.
If your material is pathfinder, mark it. Some players might get hissy about that.
If your material follows a specific fix (like Kellus' truenaming), a new mechanic (like spellshaping), or is geared to entrance from a specific base class (like the ebon initiate), please state so.
(also in following with the above) If you think the category your material falls under is important enough to warrant a new superscript category in the index, state that along with a suggestion for what that category should be called.

An Example
Here's an example of what I'd like a submission to look like, using my very own necromancy homebrew.

I want to submit my content, the dread knight (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=14390942&postcount=435) as a new base class. It's Tier 3 with stunted at-will casting. It works as a frontline fighter and minionmancer and has a reference to the Tome of Necromancy.

Ctrl+F doesn't work well with spoilers.

Actually Ctrl+F isn't an excuse not to categorize well, because often one will be looking for something in a specific category, rather than knowing the name of something you read before or heard about.

Also, categorization is counterintuitive to searching for things. If we categorize content, then most content will be isolated (New Class > Base Class > Necromantic > Minionmancy > Invocation Based > Support) because homebrew content numbers in the hundreds and not hundreds of thousands. That makes formatting ugly and un-fun, whereas Ctrl-F + keywords is a much more efficient solution.

Spoilers are only really necessary after the list has fifty or so items a single category.
Edit: perhaps toss the classes with feats under feats too? :smalltongue:

I'd like to submit my Animate Tiny Animal Undead (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=265944) 0-level Pathfinder spell (3.5 compatible). Also included is a CR 1/10 monster, the andead rat, which the spell can animate.

It was a vote against too many spoilers. A few, such that one could easily open up the ones of interest and Ctrl + F would be OK, but from what I have seen in the past I would not use spoilers.

Ctrl+F for keywords is fine. Ctrl+F for class names is phail.

EDIT: Here is something someone else made: Doombolt (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14478492#post14478492)

Necromantic Magic Missile.

OK, so I'm going to spoiler all headings (Handbooks, Classes, Feats, etc.) and nothing else. In keeping with drack's suggestion, I'm going to start linking multi-material content in all relevant places with a tag that designates them as such.

If I have misplaced or forgotten any homebrew that you have put up here, alert me!

What you got before was more the "cream of the crop", I realized there were a few more things that while not outstanding in this context might be just relevant enough to include... and one thing that is actually pretty relevant.

Most relevant thing first:
A PrC (and unfortunately it is old enough that the thread is locked, so I can't polish it up).
Master of Life and Undeath (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3384164)

This one is sorta borderline in that the base creature is very much alive, but it contains a sort of mini-afterlife inside it that people willingly die to get into, and if it is killed it and all the people it contains can come back as a ghostly deathless of itself. I'd go ahead and throw it in, perhaps with a note explaining that the relevance is not immediately apparent on a casual reading.
Devotion Bower (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5750889&postcount=5)

An anti-undead creature... which is really more of a one-use magic item that happens to be alive.
Martyr Flitter (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51127)

Here is a spell that is relevant only because it is pretty much purpose built for killing many of my organ undead (Not that Burning Hands or Magic Missile aren't pretty good too). THIS one OTOH wasn't too old to edit, so I have dropped it a level across the board. Might put it back up that level if someone replies here or via PM arguing for that. I think bleeding effects are the strongest reason to do so.
Cure Minor Wounds, Mass (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=252498)

The Bone Horror (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=247966) Homebrew Class

it hungers for flesh, and is intelligent undead after 10th.

I noteced that you don't have the Tome of Necromancy (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19527634/Tome_of_Necromancy). Although not from this board it is important for its veiws on morality .
