There's plenty of fantasy power metal: Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, and Nightwish, just to name a few. But is there anything that's less dragons and elves and more spaceships and aliens? I need something to listen to while conquering galaxies.

Ayreon perhaps, look into 0101101 or Into The Electric Castle.

Better yet, Star One (same writer as Ayreon all Sci-Fi.)

Some songs to check out:

There's a thread devoted entirely to metal. How about asking them?

Do Coheed and Cambria count? Only occasionally dipping into power metal territory (I'd call 'em prog-metal overall) but definitely sci-fi themed. To the extreme, really.

What your looking for is Iron Savior (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz7uyypx9fc). Seriously (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-H-4GtKmX8&feature=related).

They're pretty SF... then, if you know were to look for, you can find something else, for example this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPWjB2S92BA) (usually Gamma Ray aren't so SF).

Protomen perhaps? They released so far 2 albums with coherent story - not sci-fi per se but dystopian future with evil robots and good robot protagonist

EDIT
But it's not power metal so newermind...

But it's not power metal so newermind...

well, if we cut out the "power" part and consider only the Metal one, we can count on almost the entire production of Voivod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6MfekYuW8oM) and Bolt thrower (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tv7_wT1W61E)...

Luca Turillis 2nd solo album Prophet of the Last Eclipse has a scifi theme

It's not really metal at all, but for sci-fi rock in general, I highly recommend the album "Spaceship Zero" by the Cthulhu-themed band Darkest of the Hillside Thickets, particularly this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCw9D55-tT8) genius video for the song "Frogstar" (not a reference to HHG2TG, sadly, though I'd bet that's where they got the name). There's another fun video for "20 Minutes of Oxygen", but the song's a bit more ballady and might not be what you're after.

Hawkwind ?

Hawkwind isn't metal at all, let alone power metal. :smallconfused:

Although to be fair there is a period of a few months where I posted "hawkwind" in response to every thread asking for band recommendations on /mu/... :smalltongue:

Iced Earth's Something Wicked saga is SFish in a kind of way.
