View Full Version : Superhero-based satire

Possibly because of the many ludicrous features of the genre, superheroes make great vehicles for satire. Two of my favourite examples:

Magneto wreaks havoc at Paralympics (http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/sport/sport-headlines/magneto-wreaks-havoc-at-paralympics-2012083039431)

Batman vs. Reality (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1-v9VFqztY)

Would anyone like to share any more gems in this vein?

There is a webcomic about some club or organization of incredibly cool and strong men, taken from all kinds of different sources. Never read it much and don't know the name, but it was quite funny.

Edit: Suprisingly easy to find. Manly Guys doing Manly Things (http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/71).

I think that The Tick, in all his incarnations, is a pretty good satire of the superhero genre. He comes in comic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tick_%28comics%29), live-action TV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tick_%282001_TV_series%29), and animated TV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tick_%281994_TV_series%29) flavors.

Edit: Unless I misunderstood and you're looking more for superheroes as a vehicle for satire of everything/anything, rather than more focused on a satire of the genre itself. Either way, The Tick is still funny...usually.

I haven't read the comic, but I really like the animated series.
In my view, animation, with it's unlimited scope for the impossible, is THE medium for superheroes, even, or especially, cheeseballs like The Tick.

The Boys by Garth Ennis is a comic series that thoroughly satirises superheroes. A word of warning: like most of Ennis' work, it's extremely graphic in places with plenty of sex and violence.

Manly Guys doing Manly Things (http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/71).To be more precise, the premise is thusly: a time-travelling former soldier from a future that worships Marlon Brando as a god and where wars are won by popularity runs a service that helps ridiculously hypermasculine characters from media (usually games, but sometimes comics or movies or the like) to reintegrate back into normal society. Features, at one point, Leonidas of 300 and Kratos of God of War playing Spartan Gay Chicken. Also a pokemon trainer who only has one pokemon: a gyarados called Mr Fish.
It's one of my favourites

I also love The Tick.

I know and like the Boys and The Tick (at least, the animated version). Thank you for the reminder though!

Manly guys is also fun, although I confess there were a fair few references that I didn't get (particularly when they went on about bishy characters, a grouping that in general I haven't looked into).

Sentai isn't really satire most of the time.

Although Big Man Japan would qualify. As would Zebraman.

Also? Flex Mentallo.

I actually think it's a rather average webcomic overall. But it'll always have my respect for this (http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/899) page. You tell it like it is Sten.

And to stay relevant to the actual topic I'll just say the Tick in all of it's incarnations is fantastic. The only problem with the live action show was that I don't believe he once said the most feared battle cry of all time. "SPOOOOON!"

I have a soft spot in my heart for Captain Stupendous by Chris Jones and Zach Weiner (of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal)

Surprised nobody has mentioned Randy Mulholland's (of Something Positive fame) less well-known "Super Stupor". Alas, I don't think it's running anymore, but it's definitely worth an archive trawl.

There's also a strip called Gutters, but its quality is mixed at best.

Of course, for movie superheroes, there's always How it Should Have Ended (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLyoog562x4)...
